True Colors By: Jamie Lynn Ryan What would you do if no one was watching? What would you say if no one was listening? These little nuances are what can be designated as one’s “true colors,” those qualities we may take pains to hide from others on a daily basis, but that, when faced with circumstances beyond our control, shine through.

This isn’t to say that they are automatically negative, or even need to be hidden.

They are simply part of the layers which make up our individual personalities, which cause us to react in certain ways to situations in our own unique style.

mostly. Of course, some consideration for how things come across to others should always be given. Think before you speak, pause before you act; it is always more advisable to attempt to diffuse a situation rather than add fuel to the fire.

Especially with the current state of affairs in this nation, more care needs to be taken to respect one another, to pause a moment and appreciate the fact that, no matter the differences in our political, religious or societal views, we are all cut from the same cloth – and a little thing called humanity goes a long way.

Whether engaging face to face, via text message or some other written method designed to foster

miscommunication, or – best of all – on the pages of various social media sites which seem to double as a breeding ground for contentious exchanges between so-called “friends,” common courtesy should not be dispensed with.

So, take heed the next time someone is looking to engage. Draw in a deep breath, form a coherent thought, give it a second… and decide whether expressing your opinion is worth the potential repercussions. Sometimes, those true colors are not so black and white as we may think.

Remember, when you mix all the colors of the rainbow together, you are left with a gray, muddled mess.

This year’s contest is open to the first 32 online entrants and the top prize will be $3,000. Expected to compete are past champions Leif Engstrom, a three-time winner, and Balaram Stack, who won the contest in 2012. This accomplished pair will be pushed by last year’s runner-up T.J. Gumiela and Richie Bogart, who has also claimed a podium place in previous years.

Of course, even when the top surfers aren’t in the water there will be plenty to enjoy. A contest for younger surfers will begin at 8 a.m. on July 16th and the kids always draw gasps from the crowds for their skill and their hard-charging approach to surfing. entertaining events held on portable mini-ramps, Skudin says moving the contest to the Recreation Center facility was an easy decision. “The contest was always fun,” Skudin said. “But this year we’re stoked to bring a real skate contest to a real skate park.” The Bowl & Street Jam will be held July 16th with the juniors contest starting at 6 p.m., and the pro event following at 8 p.m. Accompanying the skating will be a number of bands including local reggae standouts Jahstix.

Putting the finishing touches on this year’s event will be a pair of parties on July 16th and 17th. The first event will be open to all ages and will be held between 6 and 10:30 p.m. at the Bridgeview Yacht Club.

The family-friendly affair will feature dunk tanks, kids’ activities, popcorn machines, raffles and music. The following night there will be a 21+ blowout summer bash at Pop’s Seafood Shack and Grill (15 Railroad Pl., Island Park.) This affair will feature a mini-ramp throwdown, DJs, raffles, giveaways and more.

These outings represent a chance for disabled individuals to share in the thrill of the ocean in the company of experienced instructors. Cliff Skudin, Will’s brother and also a professional surfer, has a master’s degree in special education, and both siblings believe sharing the sport of surfing lays down the foundation for the rest of the event and encapsulates the true meaning of New York Surf Week.

Not all the fun will require pulling on a rash guard, of course. There will be a vendors’ village on the Long Beach Boardwalk between Edwards and National Boulevards during the days, and many surf films will be screened for the first time on Long Island on the evening of July 14th at the Bridgeview Yacht Club, 80 Waterfront Boulevard, Island Park.

The evening continued with the procession of pre-K and sixth-grade students. Superintendent Loretta Ferraro and Board President Jay Lippert ceremoniously distributed diplomas to each student, and later sixth-graders were honored with awards from the school, the PTA, community organizations, and political offices. Mrs. Ferraro then recognized former Woodhull students who were graduating high school this June.

Keeping with tradition, the program also included a group speech by the graduating sixth-graders, in which they took turns sharing reflections on their time at Woodhull.

They fondly recalled the many unique activities, field trips, opportunities in the arts, technology and physical education, which they enjoyed over the years.

Closing the evening was a sweeping slideshow compiled by teacher Gabrielle Donovan, which captured the growth and evolution of all of the evening’s graduates and was accompanied by a stirring vocal performance of “For Good” from Broadway’s “Wicked” sung by sixth-graders Eli Finnick and Maya Perez.

Suffolk County was awarded the federal grant funding from the United Planning Work Program, which was developed by the NYMTC. The County’s Department of Economic Development and Planning will help to administer the study, which will analyze the best ways to increase connectivity between the Ronkonkoma Station and Macarthur Airport. The study will evaluate land use opportunities, economic development and benefits associated with train-

to-plane public transit connections. In addition, alternative options will be developed in regards to costs, construction time, environmental impacts and efficiency of use.

The total cost of the connectivity study is estimated at $375,000.

The Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning will provide matching funds of $75,000 for the study, which was already included in the County’s 2016 Operating Budget.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced the County is the recipient of $300,000 in federal grants from the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council (NYMTC) for the use of the plane-to-train connectivity study between the Ronkonkoma Long Island Rail Road Station and Long Island MacArthur Airport.

The Suffolk County Legislature approved the appropriation of the funds at the general meeting held on June 21st.

Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco announced that he has chosen Steve Kuehhas as Suffolk County’s new Undersheriff. Kuehhas, who is presently the East End Bureau Chief for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, will assume the position as the secondin-command at the Sheriff’s Office in July.

He will provide direct oversight of the Sheriff’s Office’s managerial and senior supervisory law enforcement personnel, under the overall

supervision of the Sheriff, and oversee the Office’s Internal Affairs Bureau, Internal Security Unit, Gang Intelligence Unit and the Criminal Investigations Bureau.

“Steve is an Attorney with nearly 30 years of experience in law enforcement, complex investigations and supervision. He is wellrespected throughout the County and works well with other law enforcement agencies.

He has also worked closely on investigations with the Sheriff’s Office for many years. These are the qualities that I sought when I began the vetting process for a new Undersheriff, and I am certain that he will do an exceptional job for the Sheriff’s Office and the County’s residents,” stated DeMarco.

As the East End Bureau Chief since 2005, Kuehhas

has been responsible for overseeing all criminal prosecutions for Suffolk’s five East End towns. He is also a well-known lecturer on policing and legal issues, and has conducted Continuing Legal Education for District Attorney staff.

In addition to his work with the DA’s Office, he is an Adjunct Professor in Criminal Justice at Suffolk Community College, and was awarded the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching in 2015.

“Vincent DeMarco has made instilling a culture of integrity, professionalism and agency-wide accountability the hallmark of his tenure as Sheriff. These are values that I share, and I look forward to this new chapter in my career,” said Kuehhas.

On July 7th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Michael Loguercio joined staff and volunteers from the Town’s Dress for Success Boutique to celebrate their 5000th client, Dorothy Parrott from Queens Village.

Founded in New York City in 1997, Dress for Success is an international not-for-profit organization offering services designed to help clients find jobs and remain employed. Each Dress for Success client receives one suit when she has a job interview and can return for a second suit or separates when she finds work.

In 1999, Brookhaven was the first affiliate to be established as part of the worldwide non-profit

organization.

The women served

by Dress for Success Brookhaven come from across Long Island. They are job ready women who have been referred by over 250 local non-profit organizations; including domestic violence agencies, veteran’s organizations, homeless shelters and job training programs.

The Dress for Success mission is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. Dress for Success Brookhaven is sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven Department of Housing and Human Services,

Division of Women’s Services.

The Dress for Success Boutique is located at Brookhaven Town Hall, One Independence Hill in Farmingville. Brookhaven Shelter Events The Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center will hold two special events on consecutive Saturdays, July 23rd and July 30th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The second annual nationwide “Clear the Shelters” adoption event will be held on July 23rd.

Nearly 20,000 pets found their forever homes in 2015, when some 400 animal shelters across the country partnered with NBC Owned Television Stations and the Telemundo Station Group.

This is the second year that the Brookhaven Animal

Shelter and Adoption Center has participated.

On July 30th, the Town of Brookhaven will sponsor the “Summer Lovin’” event.

At both events, the normal adoption fees of $137 for a dog and $125 for a cat will be waived and neuter or spay, vaccinations, microchip, license, heartworm test, flea and fecal are also included at no cost.

Both events will include vendors with information and giveaways. Food and refreshments will also be available. Pictured above are “Roma,” “Raven” and

Caring Can Contribution A concerted yearlong effort by student clubs at Islip High School led to the donation of Brady Buggy to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital’s cancer center.

The Brady Buggy, a mobile cart that allows sick children to leave their rooms and move around the center with their IVs attached to the handle of the cart, was presented to the hospital on June 21st.

The campaign, led by Joan Smith on behalf of Islip’s American Legion

Rusy-Bohm Post 411’s Suffolk County Ladies Auxiliary, collected aluminum can tabs to recycle to raise funds to purchase the buggy.

Among the high school organizations participating were the Islip High School Junior Chamber of Commerce Club and adviser Renee Clock, the Interact Club and adviser Karen Volkmann, and the Student Union and adviser Ann Gordon.

“Knowing that our

students and staff were part of this project is rewarding,” said Clock. “To watch a little boy at the center get wheeled around by his grandmother and be able to play in the playroom was priceless. I am thankful to my colleagues and the students at Islip High School, and also our community members, who helped contribute to the Ladies Auxiliary’s Children and Youth Project this year.”

Suffolk Warns of Scams Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco would like to warn the public that scammers posing as IRS agents have been calling residents in Suffolk County demanding payments and threatening arrest by County Sheriffs if they do not pay. Several residents called the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office this morning to report the fraudulent activity.

The IRS posted a public alert about these types of scams on its website and offered the following information and advice to anyone receiving unsolicited calls from people claiming to be IRS officials:

Protect Yourself Scammers make unsolicited calls claiming to be IRS officials. They demand that the victim pay a bogus tax bill. They con the victim into sending cash, usually through a prepaid debit card or wire transfer. They may also leave “urgent” callback requests through phone “robo-calls,” or via a phishing email.

Many phone scams use threats to intimidate and bully a victim into paying.

They may even threaten to arrest, deport or revoke the license of their victim if they don’t get the money.

Scammers often alter caller ID numbers to make

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $25,000 gift from the Treiber Family Foundation to support the Council’s Help, Hope and Healing campaign.

This campaign commemorates LICADD’s 60 years of providing needed programs and services to the Long Island community.

All money raised will be used to send the entire 65 member Corps plus Staff support to Indianapolis, Indiana to make history as the 1st Special Needs Group to ever perform at the DCI World Championships.

Championships is the largest event in the world for the Marching Arts Activity and has been called the “Super Bowl” of Drum Corps. The best of the best from the entire world gather to compete every year to decide who will become the World Champion. 30,000 spectators are expected to be in attendance for World Class Finals alone!

Classic a Success

On Monday, June 20th, the American Heart Association hosted its 28th Annual Golf Classic-A Joel Hamroff Memorial Tribute at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho. Event CoChairs Steven Yanofsky, Parts Authority, Inc. and Harry Armon, ARCAP Partners, LLC along with the corporate and community leadership of Long Island, participated to increase awareness of the importance of physical activity. This event provided an excellent networking opportunity while promoting exercise and physical activity. This year’s event honored Louis C. Grassi, CPA, CFE, Grassi & Co. The American Heart Association was excited to bring back the Tennis Classic as part of the day’s events. The Tennis Classic took place at the Crest Hollow County Club in Woodbury. Jill Byrne and Yvonne Evelyn, once again, Co-Chaired the Tennis

event. Paul Woodstock, Executive Vice President, U.S. Sales & Marketing, Biotronik Corp. was the Tennis honoree.

Much progress has been made in the fight against heart disease and stroke.

However, many Americans are still not getting the proper amount of exercise that will effectively combat risk factors for serious health issues. According to the American Heart Association, nearly 70 percent of American adults get no regular physical activity. Yet contrary to common perceptions, physical activity is just as important in preventing heart disease as other modifiable risk factors including smoking, cholesterol and blood pressure. A person is 1.5 to 2.4 times more likely to have coronary heart disease if he or she is inactive.

Adult (and childhood) obesity/overweight level continues to increase: 65% of all Adults are obese or

overweight.

Cocktail dinner reception and awards will followed the day of golf and tennis.

Brisk walking around the golf course and playing tennis has many proven health benefits. Adults may gain as much as two hours of life expectancy for each hour of regular, vigorous exercise – like very brisk walking – even if they don’t begin exercising until middle age. Walking is the single most effective way for many Americans to establish and continue a healthy lifestyle to improve their heart health.
