Before the 2016-2017 school year came to a close, Woodhull Elementary School students joined together to celebrate their accomplishments during the building’s annual spring concert.

The event, which showcased the talents of the school’s prekindergarten through sixth-grade students, featured a mix of music genres and small and solo performances.

Fifth-grader Patryk Warzecha, who began learning the alto saxophone in September, led the room in a beautiful rendition of the national anthem before being

joined by the rest of the Woodhull Concert Band to perform the theme from “Star Wars.” The band then switched gears to perform the jazz standard “When the Saints Go Marching In,” featuring improvised solos by fifthgrader Edoardo Giua on clarinet, fourth-grader Jack Brennan on trombone and sixth-grader Thomas Brennan on drums.

Third-graders then performed on ukulele while members of the very first ukulele ensemble at Woodhull — now graduating seniors — watched from the audience. Giovanni Giua performed his NYSSMA

solo and Patryk Warzecha put his stamp on the jazz standard “Summertime” before the Concert Band re-emerged to perform the theme from “Batman” and “Gonna Fly Now” from the film “Rocky.”

The school then performed as one large ensemble for the popular songs “Yellow Submarine,” “You Can Make It If You Try,” and “Don’t Worry Be Happy,” with grades pre-K-2 singing, students in grades 3-5 singing and playing ukulele, and sixthgrade students performing in the horn section and on the drums.

Magic Aid Donation Last week, Adventureland’s Helping Hands Foundation donated $1,000 and a variety of magic tricks to Magic Aid, a nonprofit organization that teaches the children

Dedicated to bridging magic and medicine through the use of magic therapy, David and his team are striving to enhance the quality of care provided to patients, one card trick at a time.

Funds were raised through Adventureland Employees’ Water Bottle Recycling Program, and matched by the Helping Hands Foundation. The donation will go towards training other doctors and Magic Aid members sleight

Distinguished Youth As part of his continued efforts to engage and retain Suffolk County youth, Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory today announced the launch of the Distinguished Youth Award program, which promotes and recognizes achievement, initiative and service in Suffolk County youth.

The program is open to county residents between the ages of 13 and 18. Registrants will work with local officials over the course of a year to lay out plans and goals that touch on volunteerism, personal development, exploration of Suffolk County, and physical fitness.

Presiding Officer Gregory made the announcement during a press conference at Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown alongside young people who have already registered for the program. Also joining him were two of his colleagues, 9th District Legislator Monica Martinez and 12th District Legislator Leslie Kennedy.

“The goal in establishing this program is to encourage young people to become well-rounded and engaged in local issues and initiatives,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “Our young people are our future. This program is one way to build a foundation on which these young adults can continue to develop a connection to their communities, to understand their needs, and to explore solutions. We are encouraging them to be leaders whose roots are firmly planted in Suffolk County.”

Modeled on the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, the Distinguished Youth Award program challenges participants to take part in two or more program categories: volunteer service, personal development, exploration of Suffolk County parks, and

physical fitness. Medals will be awarded based on the number of categories in which participants engage as part of their individual challenge. The Bronze Medal will be awarded to participants who successfully complete two of the four program areas. The Silver Medal will be awarded to participants who complete three of the four program areas. The highest level of achievement in the program, the Gold Medal, will recognize participants who complete their established goals in all four program areas.

“Suffolk County is lucky to be the home to so many wonderful young people who have distinguished

themselves in many ways,” said Legislator William R. Spencer, who co-sponsored the resolution to establish the program. “It will be a great honor to recognize them individually.”

“The Distinguished Youth Award emphasizes the importance of a well-rounded, goal-oriented individual,” said Legislator Martinez. “I encourage the participation of our youth in this initiative being provided by the Suffolk County Legislature. “In Suffolk County we have many accomplished young men and women,” added Legislator Kennedy. “The Distinguished Youth Award will foster an environment where our youth will continue to accomplish great things, and grow into civically minded adults.”

The Distinguished Youth Award program is just one of several of Presiding Officer Gregory’s initiatives to engage young minds of all ages in the legislative process. Last year, he established the Next Generation Advisory Council, which brings together residents in their 20s and 30s to discuss issues facing millennials and weigh in on proposals that come before the Legislature. In addition, this summer marks the third year of the new Page Program, which the Presiding Officer established to give college students a first-hand look into how local government operates.

Finally, Presiding Officer Gregory’s Youth Leadership Caucus helps high school students develop leadership skills and become active in their communities.

Adventureland’s Helping Hands Foundation will be collecting toys during the entire month of July for Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. Our goal is to exceed the 1,000 toys we collected for these charities last July. Toys can be dropped off at Adventureland’s Main Ticket Booth or Back Ticket Booth every day in July from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

with Jamie Lynn Ryan This past 4th of July weekend, my friend and I decided to take a road trip out to Montauk Point. Having recently realized that we had never been to this summer hotspot during the actual summer months, a busy holiday weekend seemed like the ideal time to go.

Armed with a handful of late 90’s teen pop CDs and my trusty iPhone navigation system, we headed out. Of course, Long Island traffic is a force to be reckoned with on any normal day; add to it a two-lane road with speed limits ranging from 55 to 25 mph, throw in a few unfamiliar tourist types - and you have yourself a solid two-hour journey to contend with, at least.

At one point, as traffic

crept to a complete standstill, my dear Siri piped up and suggested an “alternate” route, one that would allegedly save 25 minutes from the journey. Not having had the best of luck in the past with these detours, I was initially hesitant. But, looking ahead at the long line of vehicles, I figured, what was the harm.

Approximately 45 minutes later, and two side trips through the residential roads of Bridgehampton, and then East Hampton, we emerged back on Montauk Highway, back in the same line of traffic.

So much for that.

After (finally) arriving at the famous Lobster Roll luncheonette, we were met with the expected hour-long

wait, somewhat alleviated by spending time taking pictures in front of the original sign and marveling at some of the patrons attempting to navigate the pebble-filled parking lot in high heels. The food was, as always, worth the wait - and we promptly decided that dinner would most likely not be necessary, as we couldn’t imagine eating another thing for at least another three days or so.

We finished up and headed on the next leg of our journey, the famous lighthouse, the self-proclaimed “End of the World.”

The Connetquot Central School District once again hosted the nationally recognized “Camp Invention” at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School from June 26th-29th.

More than 65 district students, counselors and teachers were invited to take part in an innovative program of exploration and inspiration in an effort for the young students to expand their educational horizons regarding STEM. Additionally, the students’ family members were invited to marvel at this year’s showcase, which displayed projects the children have been working on during the week. Projects included “Mission Space Makers” which asked them to work collaboratively as they used their imaginations to create “inhabitable planets,” and the “Duct Tape Billionaire” activity, in which they designed their very own products in order to gain real-

world entrepreneurial experience.

“Camp Invention is the only nationally recognized, nonprofit elementary enrichment program backed by the National Inventors Hall of Fame,” said program director and C-Quest adviser Lisa Manzo. “Over the past 40 years, and in partnership with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, this program has encouraged nearly two million children, teachers, parents, college students and independent inventors across the country to explore science, technology and their own innate creativity, inventiveness and entrepreneurial spirit.

The camp experience provides the opportunity to think ‘outside the box’ by exploring science, technology, engineering and math concepts in a new and exciting way.”

Each day the students rotated through themed modules that employed

creative thinking to solve real-world challenges while learning vital 21st century life skills such as problemsolving and teamwork. The Camp Invention program enhances a child’s ability to learn through teamwork and subject-immersion while cultivating a new appreciation for discovery through fun-filled activities.

Fifty employees from Comcast NBCUniversal’s Advertising Sales Team volunteered recently at four ACLD community residences. ACLD (Adults and Children with Learning

and Developmental Disabilities) is a nonprofit organization supporting children and adults with autism, learning and developmental disabilities.

NBCUniversal employees volunteered their time and talents as part of Comcast Cares Day, an initiative in its 16th year, promoted by the media giant that gives back to local communities

where their employees live and work. Employees spent the morning and afternoon gardening and cleaning up the garden beds at each of the homes.

“We are grateful for Comcast NBCUniversal’s enthusiastic volunteers who donated their time to make the homes of the people we support an even more beautiful place to live,” said ACLD Executive Director, Robert C. Goldsmith.

They have made a beautiful contribution to the homes in more than one way.”

Virtual Reality

As the school year ends, and the scenic days of summer visit once again, please remember to keep the Connetquot Public Library on your list for summer fun.

From children’s programs to concerts and lively discussions to literary wonder, the library offers entertainment, enlightenment and excitement.

On June 27th, the library hosted its first ever, Virtual Reality Open House. Virtual reality is the creation of a virtual environment presented to our senses in such a way that we experience it as if

we were really there.

With the expertise of librarians Janet Kowal and Jesse Reinard, patrons were able to try out Virtual Reality hardware. From an underwater sea quest to exotic travel, from entertaining games to daring adventures, patrons experienced all this and more.

The open house provided the opportunity to experiment with this new and innovative technology, all while having fun. For the young and young at heart, this novel encounter offered a glimpse of the future, the chance to “see the world” and challenge

our senses.

According to writer Sidney Sheldon, “Libraries store the energy that fuels the imagination. They open up windows to the world and inspire us to explore and achieve, and contribute to improving our quality of life.”

Island to Table Homegrown Change will host its second Island to Table event on Sunday, July 30th from 5 to 9 p.m. on Terry Street in Patchogue.

Island to Table is an exclusive dinner prepared by local professional chefs to highlight the bounty of Long Island and support local community gardening and sustainability projects.

“Since we received such a positive response after last year’s event, we decided to keep the momentum going and make Island to Table an annual event,” said Eva Rodriguez-Greguski, founder of Homegrown Change. “This year, we will include all new chefs who will create their own distinct and delicious dishes for attendees.”

This year’s Island to Table will include a cocktail hour and a sixcourse, sit-down meal

incorporating elements from Long Island’s many farms and fisheries. Each course will include a beer or wine pairing to accentuate the flavor of the local ingredients. LIVE Volunteers Each year, Options for Community Living, Inc. needs volunteers to help complete one-day projects at its agency-owned supportive housing sites.

Many of these projects are adopted thanks to a partnership with the Long Island Volunteer Enterprise (LIVE.) LIVE has mobilized corporate volunteers on Long Island for the past 25 years, encouraging companies to reach out to their local communities and give back.

“Volunteers have a significant impact on

our work, so Options is very grateful to LIVE and the companies for the generous services they provide,” said Options’ Executive Director Yolanda Robano-Gross.

Options welcomed volunteers from Prologis (Queens, NY), ThermoFisher Scientific (Bohemia, NY) and Target (Hicksville, NY) and has two up-coming projects planned with Leviton (Melville, NY) volunteers in July. “Options provides supportive housing to hundreds of Long Islanders with disabilities.

We are responsible for maintaining more than 150 properties scattered across Nassau and Suffolk Counties,” described Robano-Gross.
