Timberlake, Zac Ephron, and Dwayne Johnson inspired her interest in writing her first series, Secrets of my Hollywood Life. Not knowing where to begin, an editor helped her initiate the development of her first novel from rewrites to final submission. Here, Jen shared her writing process, plotting ideas on a whiteboard with sticky notes, arranging and organizing, and sometimes reorganizing. She noted the importance of carving out time to write even when life gets in the way.

Finding inspiration in beloved fairy tales and pondering the fate of villains, the Fairy Tale Reform School Series was born. Imagine changing the fate of Cinderella’s

wicked stepmother and stepsisters!

Its “companion” series Royal Academy Rebels is “set in a school specifically for royals-in-training.” As a fan of Disney, her Twisted Tale Series revisits and revises the adventures of classic characters.

After her presentation, students asked questions such as what inspired her characters and what was coming up next. Five lucky participants took home personalized signed copies of books, and everyone received bookmarks. Jen Calonita has written over 30 books, with many right here in the library.

We hope those who came found inspiration to follow their own dreams wherever they may lead.

On Friday, June 2nd, Ronkonkoma Middle School (RMS) Principal Mr. Joseph Licata invited community veterans, family, friends and school administrators to take part in unveiling of a new veterans’ commemorative.

Organized by the RMS Parent-Teacher Association, the PTA posted an impressive print of a veteran, and had the names of 22 local veterans added to the display.

This is an honor that is extended to all residents who have served honorably in the any branch of the American military forces. The process will be repeated in May of 2023.

On hand for this prestigious event were Connetquot School District Superintendent Lynda G. Adams (Ed.D), Board of Education members Brian Murphy, Jaclyn Napolitano-Furno, and Marissol Mallon, along with RMS teachers, staff, and proud family members.

New York Times bestselling author and Long Island resident Jen Calonita visited Connetquot Public Library on Tuesday, April 19, to share a fascinating career and discuss her young adult books. As an elementary school student who disliked reading, it was a fourth-grade teacher who encouraged her to find books of interest. Judy Blume’s Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing changed everything, garnering the first important lesson: the more you read, the better you will write.

PSEG Long Island Is Prepared For Summer 2022 As the approaching 10th anniversary of Superstorm Sandy reminds us of the effects weather can have on the electric system, PSEG Long Island is announcing that it is prepared for hurricane season and to meet peak demand during extreme heat situations this summer.

The company’s ongoing electric infrastructure and storm hardening improvements help provide electric reliability to Long Island and the Rockaways throughout the year.

PSEG Long Island has incorporated numerous enhancements and upgrades to the electric grid, its systems and its storm processes, including its contingency procedures.

“We are committed to providing reliable electric service every day, regardless of the conditions,” said Michael Sullivan, vice president of Electric Operations, PSEG Long Island. “The improvements we have made over the past eight years will help us deliver consistent, resilient power to our customers, today and in the future.”

Electric Infrastructure Improvements Across Long Island and the Rockaways, PSEG Long Island has prepared the electric infrastructure by focusing on substation, and transmission and distribution improvements, as well as

by performing circuit and equipment inspections using drones, helicopters and infrared technology.

PSEG Long Island’s infrastructure improvements for summer 2022 include: · New or upgraded transformers installed in Round Swamp, Navy Road, Ronkonkoma, Riverhead and Brightwaters substations to provide additional capacity during peak demand · 12 new distribution feeder lines installed in Ocean Beach, Far Rockaway, Round Swamp, Ronkonkoma, Brightwaters and Southampton areas to accommodate load growth · 4 kilovolt (kV) feeder converted to a 13.8 kV feeder line in Montauk area to provide additional feeder capacity · Overhead line replacement in Eastport to supply new load addition · New Round Swamp Road substation constructed with two new 69 kV transmission lines installed from Ruland Road and Plainview substations to serve new load additions in the area · Robert Moses to Captree 23 kV transmission cable replacement to improve reliability on Fire Island · MTA Beach 67th Street 33 kV transmission circuit relocation to support MTA station upgrades in Far Rockaway Storm Hardening Programs Completed

Since the implementation of the FEMA-funded stormhardening program funded in 2014, PSEG Long Island has completed storm hardening and reliability work on more than 1,000 miles of distribution mainline circuits. From the first quarter of 2021 to the first quarter of 2022, the sections of circuits that are storm hardened saw a 44% reduction in damage leading to outages compared to the rest of the distribution system.

PSEG Long Island is proud to continue its storm hardening work with

Power On, an initiative started in the spring of 2020 that will continue to improve reliability by strengthening distribution lines, targeting the most vulnerable circuits across Long Island and the Rockaways. Since the launch, an additional more than 190 miles of distribution mainline circuits have been storm hardened with stronger poles, thicker wire and other modern equipment.

To further protect against storm damage to the energy grid, arborists from PSEG Long Island’s Tree Trimming program

work throughout the year to identify and trim tree limbs in rights of way and along easements that could potentially cause outages during or after a storm. Since 2014, PSEG Long Island removed more than 88,500 hazardous trees and/or large limbs along the distribution and transmission system and trimmed more than 21,000 miles of distribution and transmission line clearance in accordance with the industry best practice clearance standard. This standard preserves the health of the tree and directs future

growth away from power lines. In addition, a new vine mitigation program identified, cut and treated more than 14,000 vine locations across Long Island and the Rockaways.

PSEG Long Island also prepares its dedicated workforce for summer by conducting annual hurricane and tropical storm drills and employee training; by developing emergency summer operating plans; and by performing summer-peak reliability analyses to ensure there is sufficient capacity to meet electric demand on high-heat days.

People always should pay attention to weather notices so they can be prepared should severe weather be in the forecast.

Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York www.littleflowerny.org

Each person they serve is assisted in maximizing their potential for selfcare, social, emotional and physical development. The organization’s dedicated team of administrators, direct support professionals and clinicians work together to provide a continuum of care. Services are provided in residences across Queens and Long Island that feel like home.

The majority of individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities served by Little Flower participate in their Family Care program. Family Care providers provide an extended, supportive family to individuals who cannot live independently in the community by welcoming them into their homes and families. They support them as they become productive and active members of their community. All Family Care providers are certified by New York State and are supervised and monitored by Little Flower.

Family Care providers are a dedicated group that does so much day in and day out by providing personal, social, emotional and physical care. They help these extraordinary individuals live full lives, whether by assisting with scheduling and attending doctor’s appointments, supporting them in seeking employment or helping them gain new experiences on family vacations or community activities.

On any given day, direct support professionals help empower IRA residents by supporting them as they overcome challenges to reach their best potential. While supporting their basic health and well-being, they assist the residents with rehabilitation, guide them in recreational and group activities such as fishing trips or vacations, and support them in their day-to-day goals and as active members of their community.

Little Flower continues to discover extraordinary abilities within their residents, and while those individuals may face a more challenging future than most, the organization is confident that they can still enjoy a full and active life. They truly feel that what they need most is encouragement, understanding and the willingness of others to help them maximize their opportunities for becoming part of the community.

COLOR RUN CELEBRATES UNITY - More than 220 students and staff members from Sachem High School North celebrated unity and diversity with the second annual Color Us United Color Run. The Intercultural Club and Foreign Language Honor Society collaborated to host the event, where students were showered with different colors as they ran, walked and danced along the route outside of the high school. Portraits For The Youth Of Nigeria For the second time, Bellport High School partnered with the Memory Project, a nonprofit organization that invites art teachers and their students to create portraits for youth around the world who have faced substantial challenges such as neglect, abuse, loss of parents and extreme poverty.

Through the collaboration, students in the high school’s National Art Honor Society and Drawing & Painting II class created portraits and inspirational artwork for a group of children from Nigeria. The portraits will serve as a piece of personal heritage and history for these children, who are often orphaned or living in refugee camps.

The high schoolers utilized a range of media, including graphite, colored pencil, watercolors, marker, paint and graphic design software,

to create unique portraits based off of a digital photo they received.

Art teacher and NAHS adviser Devin Auricchio said the students were thrilled to participate in the project again.

“Some Art Honor Society members were able to participate for the second time, while for many others, it was the first time they had the opportunity to create the portrait,” said Auricchio. “For our students to learn that they can use their artistic skill to create something so meaningful for someone else is a truly rewarding experience.”

Money And Energy Saving Tips PSEG Long Island is sharing tips for customers to save money and reduce their energy consumption every day of the year.

National Cut Your Energy Costs Day was launched to encourage consumers to explore energy- saving opportunities. In the past eight years, since PSEG Long Island was established, business and residential customers throughout Long Island and the Rockaways have done just that. More than $380 million in rebates have been distributed to customers through PSEG Long Island’s energy efficiency programs.

That’s a savings of more than 2.1 billion kilowatts of energy since 2014 – and enough electricity to power more than 270,000 homes for an entire year.

These tips can help customers save money and energy any time of year: · Replace inefficient incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs since, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, lighting accounts for about 15% of the electricity used in the home, and LEDs use approximately 75% less energy and last up to 25 times longer. · Reduce “phantom power” by using energy efficient power strips or unplugging electronic devices when they’re not in use. Items plugged into outlets use electricity even when they’re turned off. · Use a programmable thermostat to automatically manage your home’s heating and cooling needs.

ENERGY STAR estimates that properly used programmable thermostats can save about $180 a year. In addition, PSEG Long Island offers rebates on smart thermostats. · Lower your thermostat by just one degree to potentially reduce your heating bill up to 3%.

Lowering it two degrees during the day and five to 10 degrees at night will save even more. · Install timers and motion detectors to automatically manage indoor and outdoor lighting and help ensure lights are not on when they’re not needed. · Ceiling fans can be used to save energy in winter. Setting a fan to rotate clockwise on low pulls cool air toward the ceiling, pushing warm air down into a room. · Seal windows and doorframes

Senator Weik Recognizes 300 Vietnam Vets In Pre-Memorial Day Tribute State Senators Alexis Weik and Phil Boyle recognized 300 Suffolk County veterans in a preMemorial Day tribute to soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who served in the Vietnam War. The “Vietnam War Veterans Commemoration” event was held at East Islip High School and featured presentations of certificates, commemorative Vietnam War service pins to each of the veterans and select family members. The event was moved from its original location after an overwhelming response swelled the audience beyond the original expectations.

“Our Vietnam Veterans served with honor, distinction and valor but, sadly, too many never received the recognition and welcome that they truly deserved,” Senator Weik said. “I am very proud and humbled to extend to them now the gratitude of our entire community and

the honor they earned.”

Senator Weik said she chose to host the event near Memorial Day, when Americans pause to remember all those who gave their lives to defend our nation, as a reminder of the sacrifice of all Armed Forces veterans.

The nearly threehour service featured presentations by active duty representatives of the Army, tributes by the Long Island chapter of the Patriot Guard Riders, remarks by Steven Castleton, the Secretary of the Army’s civilian aide and representatives of local veterans posts, as well as musical performance of the national anthem

by Sayville High School student Amelia Wells.

A member of the Senate’s Veterans Committee, Senator Weik has worked to expand services and recognition to veterans all across the state, but especially in Suffolk and Nassau Counties, which are home to the state’s

largest veteran population.

She was an early and strong advocate for expanding the highly regarded Pfc. Joseph P. Dwyer Peer-to-Peer Program for veterans impacted by PTSI to every county of the state and making the program a permanent part of the state budget.

She has sponsored and co-sponsored two dozen bills to improve services to veterans and recognize them for their service, including legislation to create special state commendations for service in Iraq and Afghanistan.

She supported creation of a new state Department to handle delivery of veteran’s services, overhauling the old state Division of Veterans Affairs to improve services and access.

Recently, she unveiled a bill to designate highways across the state in honor of the more than 600 New Yorkers who received the Medal of Honor, the military’s highest award.
