$23,000 a year in savings* from lighting upgrades means more of this for Long Island.

For rebate information, visit PSEGLINY.com/Business.

When the nonprofit Canine Companions requested a free energy assessment, we discovered that installing LED fixtures and other energy efficiency measures could save them nearly $2,000 a month. And with available PSEG Long Island rebates, the installation was affordable. Today, those changes have meant more funds for the mission of providing service dogs to Long Islanders with disabilities. And that means a better Long Island for us all. *Actual

Helping You Help Others

The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

www.VetDogs.org/Neighbor

GEN X REALTY Of Holtsville Sponsors Smoker Talk Boxing Event

America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization, headquartered in Smithtown. They train and provide service and guide dogs for veterans, activeduty military and first responders with disabilities.

This year they placed their 1000th service dog and reduced the waiting time to receive one from 2-3 years to 9-12 months. Long Island resident Nathan Gardner is one of many veterans who have benefited greatly from America’s VetDogs and he’s eager to share his experience in hopes that it inspire others whose lives could be changed with the help of a special canine friend.

Some years ago, Nathan, who comes from a family with a strong military background, got in a car accident. He was left without reliable transportation, which left him frustrated. He was faced with a lot of down time and eventually decided to visit a recruiting o ce in his spare time. “I walked into the Air Force recruitment o ce, because I knew I liked what they could o er me.” He soon joined and became part of the Air Force Security Forces. “I actually ended up loving the job, loving the career. I was very happy with it.”

He served for 5 years, primarily working in nuclear weapons security, where he was required to wear full battle gear. This included a plated vest, all his equipment, two weapons, a bag full of gear and ammunition. “The weight of everything I was carrying ended up taking a toll on me.” He later found out he had a herniated disc, which has worsened since he left the service. Eventually, he developed two herniated discs, sciatic nerve damage and an atrophied calf muscle, which led to ankle problems.

Nathan learned of America’s VetDogs through the Veterans Resource Center at Su olk County Community College. “A lot of the things I was reading in the brochure matched what I was looking for and what I needed,” he said. “I wish I knew about the program sooner.”

Nathan reached out to America’s VetDogs

and was able to be placed with a service dog at no cost. He met and trained with his service dog, Kenzo, in February of 2022.

“It had gotten to the point where I would lock up, fall to the ground and not be able to move,” he explained. “So Kenzo has been trained to get me help. Training with him has been a life-changing experience. He has taught me how to handle myself and my disability appropriately and I really like how my mindset has shifted into a more positive place.”

Nathan has been able to flourish in ways he never could without a service dog. He recently graduated from St. Joseph’s University and will begin pursuing an MBA this fall. He has served as Vice President of the Long Island Campus Chapter of the Student Veterans of America and has new self confidence that he couldn’t imagine having years ago.

“Accomplishing these things means a lot to me in terms of what my future can now look like,” said Gardner, who attended his recent college graduation ceremony with Kenzo, his service dog. “I’m the first person in my family to get an undergraduate degree and I’m pursuing my graduate degree. I’m very proud of that. Getting Kenzo has been one of the best things for me.”

If you would like to learn how to apply for a service dog or volunteer with the organization, please visit www.VetDogs. org/Neighbor or call 631.930.9090.

Sylvan Avenue Students Travel Through The Rain Forest

Sylvan Avenue Elementary School students vicariously traveled through the rain forest with wildlife biologist Ranger Eric, who lectured the students about the diversity of the rainforests and its wildlife and shared some of the animals a person would find there on their travels.  Ranger Eric first explained the dynamics of a rainforest, describing

them as the most diverse places on earth in numbers and species. He spoke about the four layers of the terrain and the animals that live on each layer. The most exciting part of his presentation however, was when the students met a stick bug, a collard dove named Lovey, a tarantula, a boa constrictor and more. The students and principal Alane Dugan also presented Ranger Eric

with a check totaling $219, raised through a clothes fundraiser to benefit The Center for Environmental Education and Discovery. Ranger Eric also received a certificate calling him a “good steward of the Earth” and for “helping to keep the planet green and educating us [Sylvan Avenue students] about the natural environment.”

PSEG Long Island’s Energy Conservation PSA Contest Winners

PSEG Long Island announced the 11 student winners of its annual I Am EM-Powered Energy Conservation Video Public Service Announcement Contest. Two hundred seventy three videos were submitted by creative, local schoolchildren, and 11 made the final cut. Dozens of students and teachers who participated in the program watched the announcement live via webinar hosted by the company this morning.

Over the past two and a half months, nearly 4,000 students in grades 4-8 across Long Island and the Rockaways engaged in PSEG Long Island’s I Am EM-Powered program. They learned concepts of conserving energy, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, the benefits of renewable energy and tackling pollution –concepts they put into action in their video public service announcements.

“It’s great to see how these young learners are embracing the concepts of clean energy, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and tackling pollution. They are adding to the discussion about what we can do to protect and nurture our planet,” said Michael Voltz, PSEG Long Island’s director of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, who co-hosted the event. “Congratulations to the thousands of students who participated, and thank you to the teachers who brought the contest and coursework into their classrooms.”

“It was an honor to announce the winners and share the first look at the winning videos,” said Michael Presti, PSEG Long Island’s director of Customer Experience and Marketing, who also co-hosted the event. “It was great to see how the students took concepts about saving the planet they

were given and put them into creative, informational videos. They did such great work!”

Sponsored by PSEG Long Island, the I AM EMPowered program was provided free to students in the company’s service area –Nassau and Suffolk counties and the Rockaways.

Created by educational consultants, D. Barrett Associates, the STEMrelated coursework provided lessons on energy conservation, energy efficiency and renewable energy in alignment with current educational standards on these topics. Teachers could select and submit their favorite three videos to be judged by a strict grading rubric.

Tens of thousands of young learners have been educated on energy conservation and electric safety through these programs.

PSEG Foundation To Grant $1 Million To

Local Organizations

The PSEG Foundation announced the 2023 request for proposals for the annual Neighborhood Partners Program, with grants available ranging from $500 to $15,000. Eligible 501(c)(3) organizations in New Jersey and Long Island, New York are encouraged to apply. Applications will be evaluated and grants awarded based on demonstrated program effectiveness, depth, breadth and overall alignment with the PSEG Foundation strategic pillars, which are environmental sustainability, social justice and equity and economic empowerment.

“We’re pleased to make $1 million in grant funding available through our very popular Neighborhood Partners Program, where we see local heroes making a difference in the lives of others throughout PSEG’s service territories,” said Calvin Ledford Jr., PSEG Foundation president. “We seek to partner with people who have a track record of success and who present viable plans for addressing today’s largest challenges including those of sustainability, equity, social justice and economic empowerment.”

Last year the PSEG Foundation awarded more than 300 Neighborhood Partners Program grants. For example, America’s Grow-a-Row received funding for its fresh produce initiative. This program provides nutritious produce to regional hunger relief agencies and at local free farmers markets in communities that lack reliable access to affordable fresh produce. In Long Island, Habitat for Humanity used its grant for the Reuse, Reduce, Repurpose Program to help divert more than 3 million pounds of waste from local landfills that were repurposed and sold at a fraction of the cost to benefit its clients, families and the local community.

“PSEG is the perfect example of corporate social responsibility in action. Their commitment to feeding those faced with hunger and food insecurity runs deep throughout their organization. From the countless hours PSEG employees have invested by volunteering in the fields, to helping underwrite a portion of our farming expenses,” said Chip Paillex, president and founder, America’s Grow-a-Row. “We could not be more grateful for PSEG and the PSEG Foundation’s support that allowed us to positively impact approximately 100,000 people in need last year.”

“In nearly 10 years since the inception of the program, the PSEG Foundation has made great strides with affecting change in the communities it serves,” said Maria Spina, manager, PSEG Foundation. “Through the Neighborhood Partners Program, the PSEG Foundation aims to partner with organizations that are transformative, leading change on issues impacting our communities and working toward collaborative solutions.”

To apply by the June 30, 2023 deadline, please visit our application website. Award announcements are scheduled for mid-September 2023. For more information about the program, visit https://pseg.com/ neighborhoodpartnersprogram. For questions about the program, please contact CorporateCitizenship@ pseg.com.

Ronald McDonald House Charities NY Metro honored more than 100 loyal RMHC New York Metro volunteers recently at its Volunteer Recognition Dinner, with awards for their selfless work on behalf of families with a sick child in the hospital. The event coincided with the close of National Volunteer Month

Ronald McDonald House Charities NY Metro Holds Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner

in April.

Awards were given for individuals who had given various levels of their time and energy, divided into Gold, Silver and Bronze levels, representing thousands of hours of effort and energy.

Ruth Signorelli, of Bayport, NY, was the lone Gold Award recipient, having volunteered more

than 500 hours of her time at the Ronald McDonald House Family Room at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. Ruth worked multiple hours every week, delivering free snacks, beverages, and smiles from the RMHC NYM Hospitality Cart. The Family Room Recently reopened, having been forced to close to observe

State Health Department guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is all about the families, that need our help and support so much,” said Ruth. “We’re just there to lend a hand or be a shoulder to cry on if they need.”

The Silver Award, given to volunteers who have donated between 250 and

499 hours of their time, was given to 10 people. Twenty-Nine people received the Bronze Award, given to volunteers who have donated between 100 and 249 hours of their time to Ronald McDonald House.

“The power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the

smallest act of caring, can never be underestimated. Each has the potential to turn a life around,” said Matt Campo, CEO of RMHC NYM. “The kindness, generosity, and compassion displayed by our volunteers has touched the hearts of many and have made a lasting impact.”

South Country Board Of Education Honors Winter Athletes

During their May 17 meeting, the South Country Board of Education honored five athletes for their accomplishments during the winter sports season.

Ella Masem, Samir Bell, Cadence Howard, Jaiden Green and Camryn Howard each received certificates of recognition. Masem earned accolades for setting a new state record with the Section XI state intersectional relay team, and Bell received kudos for being named to the All-Long Island First Team for basketball along with leading his team to a Division 2 season championship.

Siblings Cadence Howard and Camryn Howard were acknowledged for their achievements on the wrestling mat. Both earned All-State honors, and Cadence was one of the first female wrestlers to compete in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s inaugural all-girls wrestling invitational tournament. Green received distinction for being an All-State wrestler.

The athletes’ coaches — Alic Johnsen, track; Peter Grossi, boys basketball; and Chuck Maragioglio, wrestling — were also acknowledged for their accomplishments along with athletic trainer Gina Harris, who was presented with the prestigious Henry Schein Medical Athletics and Schools 2023 Rising Star Award.

Options For Community Living, Inc

Options for Community Living, Inc., a nonprofit organization providing residential programs and support services for vulnerable people on Long Island, has been awarded a $150,000 Housing for Everyone grant from the TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®. Options is one of 37 non-profit organizations selected from more than 450 applicants to receive a Housing for Everyone grant as part of the TD Charitable Foundation’s signature grant initiative that has helped support organizations that are focused on providing affordable housing and affordable housing services since 2005.

In recent years the housing affordability crisis has continued to be a financial burden on families. As individuals and families across the country struggle with inflation and an exponential rise in rental costs, affordable housing providers face increased

Housing For Everyone Grant

hardship given the growing demand for affordable rental units and emergency rental assistance.

The grant will support property maintenance, repairs, and renovations to multiple affordable supportive housing units many of which have been in service for over 20 years.

“Options serves more than 2,000 Long Islanders each year,” said CEO, Yolanda Robano-Gross. “With an affordable rent and services, our supportive housing programs help formerly homeless, disabled individuals and families live with dignity in the community.”

Robano-Gross continued, “This generous grant award is vitally important for our program. We see firsthand the impact that stable affordable housing has on an entire family.

People take care of their health. Some return to work or school improving their economic situation.

Children perform better in school and have more opportunities, often ending

the cycle of homelessness and poverty. Thank you, TD Bank for responding to this significant community need.”

“Access to safe, affordable housing is an important first step on the journey towards a more sustainable and inclusive future for all,” said Andy Bregenzer, Regional President of Metro New York, TD Bank. “We are proud to support organizations like the Options for Community Living and the critical work they are doing to increase access to affordable housing for individuals and families across Long Island.”

Through the 17th annual Housing for Everyone grant competition, the TD Charitable Foundation awarded $7 million across the Bank’s Maine-to-Florida footprint and Michigan to help support affordable housing organizations who focus on preserving affordable rental housing in their work to deliver rental assistance, rehabilitate affordable rental housing properties, and build organizational capacity

to address resident sustainability for the longterm. Since 2005, the TD Charitable Foundation has given more than $49 million dollars to non-profit and charitable organizations through the Housing for Everyone grant competition and helped support more than 550 affordable housing projects and initiatives.

The Housing for Everyone grant competition supports TD’s longstanding commitment to community enrichment through TD’s corporate citizenship platform, The TD Ready Commitment, which actively promotes inclusivity, economic vitality and environmental wellbeing, enabling people of all backgrounds to succeed in a rapidly changing world.

On Monday, May 15, 2023, former four-term U.S. Congressman and 2022 New York Gubernatorial candidate, Lee Zeldin, announced the launch of Zeldin Cares; a 501(c)(3) aiming to empower and uplift underserved communities by implementing wide-ranging initiatives that improve the quality of life for New Yorkers.

Some of Zeldin Cares’ initiatives to immediately implement include an event with The Arcs in the Capital Region, helping to organize a street fair to promote community services, and deployments of Zeldin Cares volunteers to boost efforts of other entities.

Yorkers. Zeldin Cares will provide support to other charitable organizations, including veterans’ organizations, homeless services, and food pantries, while also working to improve public safety, environmental conservation, and other issues. Congressman Zeldin issued the following statement regarding today’s announcement:

“I am steadfast in my commitment to deliver the leadership we need to move New York forward in the communities which could use help the most. Whether it be helping young entrepreneurs in an inner-city community, cleaning up a public space, or providing volunteers to a partner organization, I am going to continue to do my part to create a better future for New York.”

Long term, Zeldin Cares plans to partner with New York based businesses and nonprofits to implement an initiative aimed at reducing cold weather injury among the homeless population in New York; assist in developing a new entrepreneur incubation and education center in a traditionally less affluent neighborhood to improve economic opportunities; and research, design, and implement other projects intended to improve general living conditions in impoverished areas, including addressing food insecurity, youth mentoring, homeless services, and improving blighted buildings, parks, and streets.

After serving his country in the United States Army, representing his community and State as a New York State Senator, and United States Congressman, and most recently running an uplifting and energized race for New York State Governor, Lee Zeldin is now focusing his time to serve New Yorkers in a new way.

The creation of Zeldin Cares is a culmination of a life of service where Congressman Zeldin can utilize his strong community relationships, loyal and robust volunteer base, and fundraising expertise, to create a network helping and empowering underserved New

Most recently, Zeldin sent shockwaves across the nation after nearly winning his 2022 campaign to become Governor of New York, receiving more votes than any Republican candidate statewide in 52 years. He campaigned on delivering safe streets, upward economic mobility, and quality education, hearing directly from thousands of New Yorkers in inner cities, suburbs, and rural communities across the state. With Lee running strong at the top of the ticket, Republicans were able to flip several suburban House districts across the state which resulted in a Republican majority in the House of Representatives. In the ensuing months after the election, Zeldin created and is the Chairman of the Leadership America Needs PAC, joined the Board of the Republican Jewish Coalition, and became CEO of Zeldin Strategies, while actively traveling the state and country to deliver speeches, participate in media interviews, and otherwise remain active in public service. He will also be completing his 20th year in the United States Army later this month, on May 31, 2023. For more information, please visit ZeldinCares.com.
