The Best & The Brightest By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Last night, I had the privilege of attending the annual Press Club of Long Island Media Awards, held at the Woodbury Country Club, honoring the best and the brightest of Long Island’s Journalists.

This is the one night each year when we, as members of the press, have the opportunity to recognize fellow protectors of the First Amendment and to mix and mingle with those we admire from afar, on the pages of the weekly and daily newspapers, the

magazines and blogs, over the broadcast airwaves… but rarely have the opportunity to personally acknowledge.

This year, as an added bonus, PCLI honored past Outstanding Journalists as part of their initial class of Hall of Fame inductees.

To see these giants of the industry assembled before a crowd of their peers was easily the highlight of an evening that had many memorable moments.

It is nights like this that remind me why I chose to go into the field of Journalism to begin

with, to pursue a career that many seem to frown upon, for considerably less money than other, far less impactful, careers. Crazy, right? Not when you step back and take stock of a crowd like that, on a night like that, and realize that, yes, it’s all worth it.

Congratulations to all the winners, once again. I can only hope that, one day, I will be fortunate enough to stand among you. ‘Til then, I consider myself extremely lucky to be a mere observer, soaking in the inspiration from those who have come before me.

The United Way of Long Island (UWLI) has awarded a grant of $20,000 to Family Service League (FSL) under its Military Family Assistance Project community initiative.

This grant will address the immediate financial needs of Long Island’s post-9/11 military families. These funds are used to help military families with a range of immediate financial needs, such as child care expenses, auto repairs and moving expenses. FSL has been operating this program with funding from the UWLI since 2011.

Structured after the hit television show Shark Tank, the students pitched their ideas before a panel of judges and answered challenging questions about how their idea or business plan would impact today’s society.

Eight students took part in the inaugural event, showcasing inventions such as a translating application that works with a wireless device to assist individuals in learning

a foreign language interactively, a camera that aims to catch hit-and-run drivers or car vandals in the act, and even a twosided spreadable food jar.

The first-place winner was Garrett Fillorama for his Crash Cam project, second place was given to Ryan Ball and Emily Larsson for their project Snake Senter, and third place was awarded to Ahran Kilmeade for his project Kilmeade’s Koffee.

The students were awarded scholarships in the amount of $750, $500 and $250, respectively.

Summer Enrichment Series These youth programs will incorporate fun AND learning; featuring academic enrichment, physical fitness, art & music education, cultural exposure, leisure time, field trips, theater & drama, self-esteem and character building activities and much more!

A separate field trip- based program called “Summer Fun” will be available for youth in grades 7-9. This program will feature high interest activities and excursions including; bowling, ice skating, roller skating, walking clubs, parks, health & wellness, art & music, cultural exposure and programs aimed to meet the particular needs and interest of adolescents.

The Town of Islip Youth Bureau’s community agency, Youth Enrichment Services (YES), provides structured, quality Summer Enrichment Programs and a wide variety of youth development and delinquency prevention programming such as: Work Readiness Skills, After-School Programs, Youth & Family Counseling, Leadership & Community Service Opportunities, Violence/Gang/Bullying Prevention, Tutoring & Homework Help, Leisure Time Activities, Cultural Arts and Anti-Bias Programming. Smiling For A Cause In honor of Better Speech and Hearing Month, Sylvan Avenue Elementary School students and staff members once again worked to raise money to support the Smile Train. The organization is devoted to helping the millions of children in the world who suffer from cleft lip and palate through free surgery, free training for doctors and research to find a cure.

For the schoolwide effort, students and staff

participated in a Smile Train weeklong fundraiser, which included several theme days and a mile walk around the grounds.

This year, the school raised $3,372.91. With a corporate match, which quadrupled the amount collected by the school, nearly $16,000 was donated to the organization in Sylvan Avenue’s name.

Since 1999, the Smile Train organization has provided free cleft palate

surgery to more than 580,000 children who would have otherwise never received it. They have helped train tens of thousands of medical professionals and have established programs in more than 75 countries.

Operations are being done on more than 300 children a day. The amount donated

by Sylvan will cover approximately 65 surgeries for qualifying patients.

Alumni Day Bayport-Blue Point High School students had the chance to take an inside look at college during this year’s Alumni Day program. During the event, 10 members of the Class of 2013 returned to their alma mater to speak with the building’s upperclassman about their inaugural college experience and share information about making a successful transition from high school.

The program began with an informative assembly for the junior class,

during which the alumni spoke about their college preparation process and shared some tips for success. In the senior social studies classes, the visitors also spoke about their freshman experience and answered the students’ questions about college life.

A free surfcasting clinic will be held on June 11th at Smith Point Wilderness Center, Fire Island National Seashore from 6 to 8 p.m., New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Regional Director Peter A. Scully announced today. DEC’s I FISH NY program is offering the event in cooperation with the US National Park Service.

“Long Island shores offer a wide variety of recreational opportunities for the entire family,” DEC Regional Director Peter A. Scully said. “Surf casting can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience that can create lifelong memories.

Rowing Toward A Championship

This weekend, I am competing in the National Championship for rowing.

As the culmination of four years of hard work, this regatta marks the end of my rowing career.

Although I started as a very poor athlete, I grew to love the sport. Now, I’m representing St. John the Baptist in the Varsity Quad, along with three of my best friends. I’m also competing in the Varsity Pair.

This year proved to be one of the most productive in recent years, as we have six boats competing in this national championship.

With so many entries, I believe we have put St. John’s on the map, as a force to be reckoned with

in the realm of high school crew. With any luck, some of our boats can bring home some hardware, as we build a dynasty that will continue for future athletes.

When I entered as a freshman, my team was mediocre. Now, as I leave, my team is outstanding.

The hard work put in by both the athletes and the coaches, combined with significant involvement from the parents, helped to solidify SJB as a force both on the water and in training.

I like to think that I have made a positive difference on this team - and maybe I have - but the opportunity to compete on the highest stage available was earned

by hard work on the part of the entire team. Perhaps our impressive year will lead to advances in the future. With any luck, our bid for a national title ends in a medal.

Even if it does not, I can honestly say that my four years as a St. John’s rower have left me a better athlete and a better person. This team has left an imprint on me that will last forever.

I will never forget my coaches, my teammates or the memories we’ve formed along the way. I started the season as a substitute, and now I’m on a boat, rowing toward a national championship, with a group of friends I would not trade for the world.

Stepping Back In Time Academy Street Elementary School fourthgraders had the chance to experience a part of their social studies curriculum firsthand as they stepped back in time and celebrated Colonial Day. Dressed in traditional Colonial attire – bonnets and dresses for the girls and knickers and Colonial hats for the boys ¬– the students spent an entire day recreating the time period they had been

studying in the classroom.

Students started the school day with a Colonial school morning, including learning the rules and manners of students during the 1700s, which they had to abide by throughout the day. They recited from an Academy Street primer and practiced subjects that were taught during the era by doing math lessons with chalk, reviewing their reading skills, and

During crafts, students made silhouettes, fashioned candles, made apple cobblers, learned how to weave and played games. With the help of several parent volunteers, the classes also enjoyed a traditional Colonial luncheon.

Brookhaven Job Fair On Thursday, June 26th, The Division of Economic Development’s Brookhaven Business Advisory Council (BBAC) will sponsor the 3rd Annual Jobhaven.org Job Fair from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The event, which is free to all residents, will be held in the second floor auditorium at Brookhaven Town Hall.
