The Long Island-based credit union NEFCU has awarded 82 students from high schools across Long Island each with a $500 voucher to use toward their college education, as part of its annual Making a Difference Scholarship program.

In total, NEFCU granted $41,000 to graduating seniors from local high schools across Long Island.

The individual winners will be announced in June at their respective high school’s scholarship award ceremonies.

Each participating high school’s guidance department selected one graduating senior of its choice based on a minimum four-year average of 90%, as well as service to his or her community and school. Since the Making a Difference Scholarship program’s inception more than 10 years ago, NEFCU

has awarded more than $1,000,000 to Long Island high school and college students.

In addition to meeting the academic qualifications and outstanding service to both their school and their community, each student must attend a two- or fouryear college or university after graduating this spring.

Winners of the Making a Difference High School Scholarship are eligible to apply for NEFCU’s Premier Making a Difference Scholarship, a $20,000 scholarship (paid over four years) offered to recipients of NEFCU’s High School and Family Scholarships to help fund their college education.

NEFCU also offers several other scholarships for undergraduate and graduate college students.

important part of our community outreach, and it gives us such great pride to help so many local Long Island students achieve this goal,” said Valerie Garguilo, vice president of marketing and community relations for NEFCU. “Our Making a Difference Scholarship program is a great way for us to foster college education and reward those deserving students who have worked so hard in school.”

This year’s applications were open to nearly all Long Island high schools.

Out of the 82 participating high schools, 23 are located in Suffolk County and 59 are located in Nassau County.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Summer concert season is upon us! I have to admit, I went a little ticket crazy this time around. The instant the Jones Beach schedule was posted, I eagerly scanned it for shows I wanted to see, and then scoured the internet for any special pre-sales, Groupons, etc. that I could find.

The problem – well, a temporary inconvenience, as the case may be – is that some summer tours seem to be announced earlier each year and, while there are plenty eager to attend, few people are willing, or able, to commit to such expenses in the middle of Christmas shopping.

Me, I ignore such … what’s the word … logic? Rather, I

am of the philosophy that, if you want to do something badly enough, why should you wait for tickets to be sold out and appear on resale sites for triple the price?

Spontaneity is key – just press that “purchase” button and worry about minor details like cost and finding a concert companion later!

Of course, needless to say, after realizing that I had accumulated tickets to about seven or eight shows over these next several months, I began to panic. Slightly.

Trying to remember who likes what types of music, the corresponding dates, times, locations, the cost factor … it’s a bit like being an event planner, desperately trying to fill each slot appropriately. The ultimate

goal, of course, is to not find myself solo the day of the show, contemplating a.) going by myself, b.) attempting to resell the tickets, or c.) worst of all, losing the money laid out and not going at all. A truly lose/lose situation.

By the time you read this, I will have attended concert number one (guest confirmed, tickets paid in full), with numbers two and three to follow shortly in the coming week. A bit of overkill, I know.

But that’s what summer is all about – enjoying the great outdoors with family and friends, taking in some music, film, culture … whatever the case may be.

This is what we look forward to all year. Let’s not forget to savor it now that it’s arrived.

More than 400 attendees from the Long Island medical and corporate community came out to the American Museum of Armor in Bethpage on Friday, May 8th, to attend the American Heart Association’s 52nd Annual Long Island Heart Ball. The Long Island Heart Ball is an annual social event held to recognize outstanding accomplishments of individuals and companies in the area of cardiovascular science and leadership.

This year’s event was chaired by Allan H. Cohen, Esq., Managing Partner, Long Island, Nixon Peabody LLP. The 52nd Annual Heart Ball honored Scott L. Schubach, MD, FACC,

Chairman, Department of Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery, WinthropUniversity Hospital. Dr. Schubach received the 2015 Cardiovascular Science Award. Joseph R. Ficalora, President & Chief Executive Officer, New York Community Bancorp, Inc. received the 2015 Corporate Leadership Award. Clay Darrohn, Chief Executive Officer, Fishbat received the #HeartBall #Honoree award.

MODEL UN - Connetquot High School recently hosted over 100 local high school students representing 13 Long Island high schools for the 2015 Model UN Conference.

Connetquot’s Model UN Club assumed the role of national ambassadors, simulating what goes on at the United Nations. Students debate current issues, draft resolutions, plot strategy and negotiate with supporters and adversaries. Each student was assigned to represent one nation and placed in one of seven committees to discuss important global concerns.

Friends Of Carly Carly LeStrange, invited students to run a 1-mile course through the surrounding community as their peers in kindergarten through second-grade cheered on.

Additionally, leading up to the event each year, the school fundraises for a cause connected to Carly’s memory. This year all

Colonial Times

The clocks appeared to have turned back to the 19th-century when Blue Point Elementary School fourth-grade classes celebrated Colonial Day this May by participating in a variety of hands-on activities.

Throughout the day the students, who were dressed

in traditional colonial attire, rotated between the silhouette, optical illusion, candle making, and occupational sign making station. Students could be found scratching away with their quills at their desk, dipping their candles into hot wax, posing for their silhouette portraits,

brainstorming an original idea for a sign to hang out of their would-be store in colonial times, and much more.

Coast Guard Lesson

Raising Funds

A group of 20 friends dedicated to supporting “America’s Vet Dogs” held a yard sale in West Sayville on Saturday (May 30th) and raised $1,000 for the organization.

The event also included a raffle for one year of free frozen yogurt donated by Sweet Frog of Sayville, and a lemonade stand manned by family and

neighborhood kids who also wanted to help the cause. The same group raised $12,000 for the Vet Dogs in April.

“America’s Vet Dogs” provides veterans who have served honorably with a service dog specifically bred, raised and trained to suit their specific need.

Members of “Friends of America’s Vet Dogs,” who

hail from Patchogue, Sayville, Brentwood, Hauppauge, Holbrook, Center Moriches and Farmingville, hold various fundraisers for the the Vet Dogs at different locations throughout Islip and Brookhaven during the year. They can be reached at PO Box 18, Bohemia, NY 11716-0018.

As part of Woodhull Elementary School’s college and career readiness program, students in pre-k through sixth-grade visited the United States Coast Guard Station on Fire Island.

The day began in the galley, where Commander Wendt delivered a basic overview of Coast Guard Missions nationwide.

The students had handson experiences with the dewatering pump and heaving the rescue line. The Marine Safety Detachment also spoke to the students about pollution response and keeping our waters clean. They learned about personal floatation devices, toured the motor lifeboat and viewed an exciting demonstration of flares

and emergency signaling devices.

It was an inspiring and informative day and especially relevant since nearly one third of the students have parents who are members of the Coast Guard.

BEAUTIFYING CAMPUS - Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School students recently finished beautifying two courtyard gardens on campus. The fifteen students are part of the Slocum Garden Club, which uses contributions from teachers, a financial grant from the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children (CFAC), a generous financial investment by the school’s Parent-Teacher Association and donated plants from the Town of Islip to improve their school courtyards.

Mrs. Tallman used the Heimlich Maneuver to remove an obstruction in one student’s throat.

Star Island Yacht Club has announced that it will hold its 29th Annual Shark Tournament on June 18th20th. This annual Father’s Day event has become a Montauk tradition and a major happening, with over 100 boats participating annually, drawing thousands of spectators.

Cash prizes will be awarded for the heaviest shark in the tournament and the heaviest shark for each day. The top three prizes will also be awarded for the heaviest mako, heaviest blue shark and heaviest shark of another species.

In addition to this outstanding competition, all sportsmen can contribute to the study of the shark by tagging and releasing sharks that do not meet strict weight requirements.

In 2014, more than

$485,000 in cash, prizes, and trophies were paid out. Over the course of two days, 117 boats and 702 anglers brought in 33 fish, including ten Makos, 14 Threshers and nine Blue Sharks. The heaviest shark was a 377-pound Thresher landed by Ed Groppe aboard Captain David Walters’ “The Reel Deal.”

Of the sharks that were weighed in, more than 750 pounds of edible shark meat was donated to the Long Island Council of Churches’ food pantry to help feed those in need.

The entry fee is $1,250 per boat. For sports fishermen who would like to get in on the competition but do not own a boat, the Star Island Yacht Club Charter Boat fishing fleet is available for hire for either one day or both days of the tournament. Each of Star Island’s boats can accommodate up to six

anglers.

Star Island wishes to advise all prospective participants that, as per Environmental Conservation Law 130338, New York State law now requires that all shark tournament participants use non-stainless steel non-offset circle hooks exclusively.

Dockage is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Transient rates for the tournament are $5.50 per foot for up to 59 feet, $6.00 per foot for 60 feet and up. Utilities are $30 for 30-amp and single-cord 50-amp service and $50 for two-cord 50-amp service.

Library Marchers

On Monday morning, May 25th, as F-22 Fighter Jets flew overhead, employees of the Connetquot Public Library gathered to march in their first Memorial Day Parade.

As the jets soared through the air, marking the end of their appearance at the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, it was a reminder of why we were all assembled together. Memorial Day is a day of remembrance, a day to honor those who lost their lives while serving in the country’s armed forces.

From the beginning of the parade at Hubal Street and Ocean Avenue,

members of the Bohemia Fire Department, distinguished Veterans, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and local community members prepared to march down Church Street to Smithtown Avenue.

Along the parade route, residents congregated outside their homes and lined the streets with their flags and support.

From behind a banner of service and support, the Connetquot Public Library marched for the first time.

Residents of the Arbors, including many Veterans, sat beside the white picket fence viewing the passing

parade. It reminds us all of the tremendous sacrifices our Veterans and families have endured from past generations until today.

At the end of the parade, Bohemia resident and State Senator Tom Croci, spoke about the proud heritage of service in our local community and the cherished principles of strength and freedom.

On behalf of the library, Director Kim DeCristofaro took part in the placing of the community wreaths at the Veterans Memorial reminding us that we stand upon their legacy with pride and gratitude.

The Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children (CFAC) recently welcomed faculty, administration, family and friends to their Community Honors Gala & Fashion Show in Holbrook.

GALA & FASHION SHOW - Teacher-models display their fashion show outfits on the steps at Villa Lombardi’s after the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children Community Honors Gala & Fashion Show. The purpose of the event was to honor teachers Mrs. Helen Maloney and Mrs. Barbara Brodsky for their positive work on behalf of Connetquot students.

Academy Street Elementary School fifthgraders brought to life a wide variety of historical figures as they participated in the building’s “History for Hire” wax museum.

Leading up to the event, the students read a biography and gathered research on an individual who had historical importance in the Western Hemisphere.

They then synthesized their research and deployed

their writing skills by creating a resume for that person, highlighting their particular skill sets and qualifications. On the day of the event, the students dressed as the individual and remained still – as if set in wax – until activated by a visitor to their station.

Then, acting as the person, they petitioned for jobs tailored to the areas that made them famous.

In addition to the important historical and

literary lessons displayed, the event also served as a community service venture, as visitors made monitory donations each students’ stations to benefit Inclusive Sports and Fitness, Inc. ISF provides skilled therapeutic services to maximize a child’s capacity to play sports and recreational activities.
