“Westy solved a major obstacle for us by providing us with a clean, secure location to house our items,” said Mitch Shapiro, The Foundation For Sight and Sound.

Going Gold at NYSSMA Majors The Connetquot Central School District congratulates the fourthand fifth-grade students of Sycamore Avenue Elementary School’s chorus program for receiving a Gold rating for the third year in a row at the NYSSMA Majors competition held at Centereach High School.

No strangers to musical success, this is the fifth

year that the fourth- and fifth-grade chorus students have attended the NYSSMA Majors, as they performed three songs for two judges and were rewarded with constructive criticism to help them improve their vocal and choral singing technique.

Additionally, the judges complimented the chorus on their hard work, beautiful tone and attention to details.

“The students have been working very hard all spring on their music,” said Rachel White, Sycamore Avenue Elementary School music teacher. “After their performance review, we talked about how we can continue to improve, while celebrating our success; this was a great learning opportunity!”

Students Arianna Chechakos, Ava Catania, sisters Mae Noone and Kyra Noone, Hailey Priemer and Mrs. Zaleski met at the school gymnasium to demonstrate their support for the program. Each student had their hair measured, secured into ponytails and then watched as the Vamp stylists worked their magic. Additionally, the students’ parents were on hand to watch the experience and share this important moment with them.

planting techniques, how to maintain an ecofriendly environment and the life cycles of flowers – including perennials, black-eyed Susan’s and annuals - and vegetables such as cucumbers, squash and radishes. The students meet for five sessions in the fall and five sessions in the spring season, and work together to plant vegetables and flowers which will ultimately be taken home by families of the school community once they’re in full bloom.

The effort is supported by several outside individuals and organizations,

including but not limited to Slocum Elementary School PTA’s annual Chinese auction event.

PTA President Kimberly Ungro also contributed new picnic tables and accompanying umbrellas.

Additionally, the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children has also provided multiple grant funding, which has provided the gardens with a beautiful aluminum greenhouse and a newly installed irrigation system for maintaining healthy plants.

This Father’s Day, we celebrate all the men in our lives and the many men in Suffolk County who take on the role of Fresh Air father, as they open their hearts to New York City children through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program for one to two weeks during the summer.

“Hosting has been a wonderful experience. It’s provided us with special memories and gives us something to look forward to every summer,” says Richard, a Fresh Air host

Each summer, thousands of children from New York City’s lowincome communities visit volunteer host families in rural, suburban and small town communities along the East Coast and Southern Canada. Fresh Air children are given the opportunity to experience a world outside of New York City full of backyards to play in and lakes to swim in.

Tulips Bring Cheer On a cold, windy October day, Sayville SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) members, along with their co-Advisors Ms. Susan Censoplano and Ms. Kimberly Sznitken, planted tulip bulbs to create The Garden of Remembrance.

“Its purpose,” Ms. Censoplano explained, “is to help us remember those we have lost and to remind us to cherish those still with us.”

This spring, the SADD tulips bloomed as a lovely reminder of life’s preciousness.

Artists on Display

For quite a while now I tried to figure out What love, admiration and spells are about.

Powers of a psyche are mine from time to time Most often when cupid his bells lets chime.

I actually feel the thoughts of people dear to me Without being told, their deepest concerns I see.

Spells are vibrant declarations of a nameless force They have in a chosen media their source.

Onto my open umbrella those spells often fall Slowly one by one to the ground they roll.

I don’t want them to get me into their grip I am afraid that into obsession I might slip.

Yet, at times I succumb and those powers use I do with you, infatuation is my excuse!

Any and all caution is thrown out to hell I close the umbrella and submit to the spell!

Poets’ Corner Presented by South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers

Woodhull Elementary School’s gymnasium was recently transformed into an art gallery as school art teacher Bianca Hansen presented the annual exhibition of prekindergarten through sixth-grade student work.

The student work drew on multiple inspirations including studies of other

artists such as Andy Warhol, Claude Monet and Romare Bearden. Other works were interdisciplinary in nature, including tessellations made using math, drawings of fictitious animal adaptations and large paintings of ancient Egyptian gods.

Also featured was a live demonstration of 3-D

printing along with works designed by students using computer software and the school’s 3-D printer on loan from BOCES. Family and friends toured the show led by their very creative student artists.

An “Escape Room” specifically designed for the younger set was a recent enrichment activity offered to Third through Sixth graders, thanks to Sayville High School’s Forensics Team and science teacher/Forensic Team Club advisor Sally Stoll-DePompeo.

The “Escape Room Game,” often called Breakout, is a themebased, life-sized game of challenge held in a closed environment embedded with clues. While beating the clock set for sixty minutes, participants follow the clues, crack the codes and problem-solve their way to “freedom.”

It is fun for all ages and helps hone investigative skills, not unlike those of Forensic specialists.

“BreakoutEDU is an

educational escape-room activity,” explained Sally Stoll-DePompeo.

“The Forensics Team decided to host this enrichment activity based on the theme of climate change for elementary-aged students in the district. There was no cost for attendance; we merely requested a free-will donation of nonperishable food items for the local food bank.”

The grade-school students who signed on for the enrichment activity learned the value of teamwork during the course of the game. They put their heads together and dealt with each step of the challenge thoughtfully on their journey to the solution.

Hints were available if the students needed a nudge here and there to get past a difficult

clue. “I was so impressed by the fifth-grade group.

They worked hard to solve the Room without using any hints! They were awesome!”

Having an aptitude for computer literacy and reading comprehension along with good observational skills were important, but being willing players ready to adapt to each clue brought genuine excitement to the game. In the end, each of the teams solved the clues and puzzles that helped them open the locks on a box containing the answer to the negative effects of climate change.

“All of the teams were able to break out in time,” Mrs. Stoll-DePompeo said.

“Congratulations to all!”

Building Bridges

Guided by the “Teaching Tolerance Anti-bias Framework” to create a just, equitable, and safe environment for all students, three Sayville High School students, Abby Good (12), Gena Mizzi (12), and Cameryn Surdi (10), have been serving as Ambassadors with the Town of Islip.

For years, this Ambassadors Program has been uniting students from school districts within the Town of Islip for the purpose of bringing awareness to all forms of bias and discrimination.

To acknowledge their outstanding efforts in building bridges across communities and creating

a more civil society, Abby, Gena, and Cameryn were nominated by Sayville High School’s Student Assistance Counselor Ms. Kahan and selected for the Students Building Bridges Award. They were among the twenty-six students from ten districts throughout Suffolk County recognized during the Suffolk County’s Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) program held at Suffolk County Community College in Selden, NY. The featured speaker at the ceremony was Hannah Robinson who shared her experience as a refugee from Nazi Germany whose life was spared by the

Kindertransport program.

“This award recognizes students who seek to reduce bias and discrimination within their schools and communities,” Ms. Kahan explained. “As role models for their classmates, Abby, Gena, and Cameryn greatly deserve this recognition.”

Ms. Kahan was proud of their accomplishments, delighted they were recipients of this Students Building Bridges Award and offered them her congratulations, the first of many congratulations these young ladies should be receiving from the community.

Although Carmella’s motivation stemmed from her own personal experience as a target of cyberbullying, her application for the scholarship described a plan - already in practice during the Spring semester - that she had co-created with Sayville Student Assistance Counselor Ms. Kahan to thwart bullying at Sayville High School.

Ms. Kahan explained that Carmella has been an essential component of a push-in lessons conducted the health classes. “She shares her story as part of a lesson on bullying including what we can to do to be Upstanders. She plans to finish up with this year’s semester and begin again in the fall to reach as many of her peers as possible with this important message.”

All three winners LICAB contest winners who received scholarships for their action plans (First Place: $1,000.00, Second Place: $700.00, and Third Place: $300.00) will be working together on a project for LICAB. As for winning Second Place, Carmella said “I am very grateful to be a winner and a part of LICAB; a very big thank you to Ms. Kahan for being my biggest supporter and helping to guide me in the right direction. You helped me take a very bad situation and turn it into something great. Tonight I met some really amazing girls and I’m excited to work alongside them to end this big issue.”

“How do injuries affect the human brain? What changes do drugs and alcohol cause in brain function?”

During a virtual ‘field trip’ with an AIMS educator from Saint Louis University, students from Sayville High School’s Human Anatomy classes covered these topics and more. And they did not have to travel far, just to the High School’s library, thanks to the technology of Video Conferencing.

According to its’ website, Adventures in Medicine and Science (AIMS) “is an outreach program of Saint Louis University.

AIMS combines handson programs, auditorium presentations, and distance learning to bring lessons of anatomy and science to life for students across the country and internationally.”

This BOCES-sponsored program “connects

schools with laboratories, universities or historical societies that present material in different subject areas,”explained Sayville Teacher Librarian Nancy Finnerty. As the Library Liaison for the Sayville School District, Ms. Finnerty had recently attended a Liaison meeting at BOCES. After learning about these exciting opportunities “the science ones in particular caught my attention” she approached Sayville science teachers Ms. Cindy Giannico and Ms. Danielle Lutz about hosting a Video Conference. They picked a date, brought in the students, and the rest is history.

“The Sayville students really enjoyed participating interactively and learning about many brain-related topics including the neurons and supporting cells of the nervous system, cerebral

hemispheres, cerebellum, and the brain stem,” reported Ms. Finnerty.

“A doctor from St. Louis University shared all this, including his knowledge about what happens inside the brain when drugs and alcohol are ingested, brain injuries, and brain related diseases, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

All participants viewed an actual human brain, it’s outer covering, as well as a cross section or a ‘slice’ of the inner brain. Students commented afterward on just ‘how cool’ it all was!”

With the indispensable assistance of Sayville’s Supervisor of Network Systems William Seus, who helped them launch this first conference, Ms. Finnerty hopes to host many more video conferencing events in the years to come,” including a Forensic Autopsy in our newly remodeled High School Library in the Fall!”

Funding from the NYS Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) has enabled the Child Care Council of Suffolk to offer free training to child care professionals located within zip codes affected

by Super Storm Sandy to help them implement the Pyramid Model (adopted by New York State for social emotional development in young children through the Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning) into their child care programs.

The affected zip code areas are: 11757, 11701, 11702, 11706, 11726, 11951, 11795, 11717, 11769, 11743, 11704, 11746, 11772, 11725, 11722, 11967, 11798, 11787, 11779, 11770, 11731, 11729, 11901 and 11751. Child care providers in these locations can obtain six hours of highquality, OCFS-required training at no cost in the following topics: principles of child development, program development, and safety and security

procedures. This special training provides child care professionals with technical assistance and support to help children build resiliency, coping skills and self-regulation.

For her “action plan” to combat cyberbullying, Carmella Perrone, a Sophomore at Sayville High School, won Second Place in the annual scholarship contest awarded by the Long Island Coalition Against Bullying.

First- and Third-Places winners were two Seniors from West Babylon and Bellmore, respectively.

LICAB is a non-profit organization whose mission is to “emphasize the importance of bullyfree communities on Long Island through education, increased awareness and therapeutic outlets.” The competition for the LICAB Scholarship required each candidate to outline an effective, scalable and goal-oriented strategy that could be used to combat cyberbullying in Long Island communities.

Outstanding Science Teacher

Caitlin Gormley was honored as the Outstanding Senior Science student of Sayville High School on Tuesday, May 23rd, at the Annual Awards Dinner of the Suffolk Section of the Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS). Caitlin was chosen for the award by the Science Department of Sayville High School.

The recipient was carefully chosen from the entire school based on her outstanding science achievements throughout her high school career.

Maria Brown, who has served as a mentor to Caitlin, was also present at the award ceremony and spoke a few kind words about the student.

This year the STANYS Suffolk Section’s 42nd Annual Awards dinner was held at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook. Twentysix districts had student honorees in the crowd of 100 people. Each student received an engraved plaque to commemorate their achievements.

The Suffolk Section is a local section of STANYS

and is an association of science educators (K-16) working to continuously improve science education in New York State. The Suffolk Section organizes, sponsors, and runs many activities for students and teachers throughout the year. Brian Vorwald and Maria Brown, the event organizers for the Suffolk Section said, “It was a terrific evening for recognizing these truly outstanding students and their teachers for their talent, dedication, and years of hard work.”

Volunteers Needed Fifth-grade students at Connetquot Central School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School were recently visited by Town of Islip representative Courtney Betcher as part of the Islip Town Youth Enrichment Services program for a presentation about the dangers of

experimenting with drugs and alcohol.

“The goal of these workshops is to help the fifth-graders make informed decisions,” said Lara McNally, Idle Hour Elementary School Youth and Family Services coordinator. “Due to Ms. Betcher’s visit, these

students now have a better understanding of the dangers in experimenting with tobacco, alcohol and illegal drugs.”

Family Service League (FSL), a Long Island based non-profit human service organization, is seeking volunteers to train as advocates for our Long Island Seniors living in nursing homes and long term adult care homes throughout Suffolk County.

A certified Ombudsman

is a special volunteer who works with the residents to resolve complaints and concerns. The goal of the program is to protect the health, safety, welfare and rights of the residents in long term care facilities. FSL offers initial training classes, ongoing supervision and continuing education for

all volunteer candidates.

V o l u n t e e r ombudspersons will visit an assigned long term care home once a week to help seniors and their families understand and exercise their rights to quality care and better quality of life.

The Connetquot Teacher’s Association has been increasingly involved in community events such as providing financial support of both boys’ & girls’ local sports teams, collecting clothing & snacks for the needy, raising funds for cancer research, as well the financial awards for graduating Connetquot students.

The latest Connetquot Teachers Association project has been partnering with the

Education & Assistance Corporation to provide healthy snacks, fruit drinks and bottled water for youngsters waiting for the parents at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip.

Mr. Dolce personally congratulated each of the winning students, and their families. The kind words the students used to describe the impact Connetquot educators have had on their lives touched the hearts of the teachers being recognized.

DIGGING UP FUN - Kindergarten students at Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School were recently able to step inside the shoes of an archaeologist as they uncovered “artifacts” from their personal “dig sites” with assistance from a representative of the Long Island Maritime Museum. Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) VicePresident Mr. Chris Dolce hosted a reception and awards ceremony for the winners of the 2017 annual essay contest. Held at the colorfully decorated library at Connetquot High School, Dolce and CTA committee members welcomed the selected students, their parents and the teachers “… who made a difference …” in their lives. Each of the six winning students received an attractive certificate, a copy of their winning essay, and a check for $500.

Speaking on behalf of CTA President Tony Felicio, Jr., Dolce congratulated the students and their parents for the outstanding essays they had submitted.

The topic for the essays was The Teacher who Made a Difference in My Life. Close to 200 essays were read and graded by a committee of CTA members from Connetquot HS, as well as

Wall of Fame Induction Nearly 150 coaches, athletes, administrators, family members and residents of the Connetquot Central School District recently attended the 2017 Athletic Wall of Fame Induction, held at Connetquot High School, to recognize and congratulate 10 individuals who had a positive impact on the district’s athletic community.

The 2017 Wall of Fame inductees include the following: Mike Barbara (Class of 1990/football), Christine Buderman (Class of 1993/track and soccer), Tom Croci Sr. (former Connetquot High School Principal, coach and community contributor), Regina Ely (Class of 1996/ cross-country, basketball

and track), Brian Ferguson (Class of 2007/baseball), Kevin Kaminskey (Class of 1994/wrestling), Jeremy Leggiero (Class of 2009/ football), Kelly Bunster Luquer (Class of 2008/ swimming), Kieran McArdle (Class of 2010/ lacrosse and basketball) and Eric Stolfa (Class of 2000/soccer, wrestling and lacrosse).

Replicas of the plaques, which are mounted on the Wall of Fame in the athletic wing of the high school, were presented to each of the inductees by their former coaches. Athletic Wall of Fame inductees are selected by a committee of veteran coaches, teachers and administrators from nominations submitted by qualified Connetquot

student-athletes, coaches and community members.

Prior to the induction ceremonies, all in attendance had the opportunity to catch up on the last few years over a tasty brunch courtesy of the Connetquot High School food service employees.

back to school after a major surgery.

Thanks to the students’ efforts and the community’s generosity, Keri and Sean were able to create a “Wellness Basket,” complete with a video of well-wishes, filmed and beautifully edited by Keri

and Sean.

The “Wellness Basket” provided the receiving family with numerous gift cards, comfort items and a donation to “Stand Up to Cancer” in the name of their classmate.

Recognition for Concert Choir

Three members of the St. Regis Knights of Columbus recently visited student-musicians of the Connetquot High School Concert Choir to thank them for performing at the 2017 St. Patrick’s Day Parade. They also presented a certificate of appreciation and a $250 check for Connetquot’s

Student Activity Fund on behalf of the Knights of Columbus.

St. Regis Knights of Columbus representatives Tom Ambroseccia, Steve Murphy and Jeff Thure were met by Connetquot High School Principal Kenneth J. Costa, Connetquot Central School District Director of Fine Arts and

Eighth-grade students enrolled in math, science and technology classes at Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School recently competed in a regatta at the Connetquot High School natatorium. They devoted weeks to learning about buoyancy and the proper requirements necessary to building a functioning boat out of cardboard and duct tape.

Throughout the course of their preparation, students read articles,

watched videos, and completed math calculations including boat volume, water displacement, and how much mass the boat could hold in order to strengthen their understanding about what it takes to get a boat to float. Within small groups, they used their knowledge to design a boat that would enable up to two students to safety travel from one side of the pool to the other without sinking.

“Overall, I am extremely

impressed with how hard the students worked on this assignment and how successful several of the boats were,” said Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School MST teacher Keri Trojanowski.

“When discussing the regatta with the students afterward, they made it clear that their design and math calculations were accurate, despite the fact that some of the boats sank upon entering the water.”

Legislator Leslie Kennedy, Comptroller John Kennedy, County Executive Bellone and other members of the Suffolk County Legislature joined heads of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office on a sullen Friday morning to commemorate members of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office killed in the line of duty since the late 19th century.

Legislator Kate Browning presided over the memorial as Master of Ceremonies.

The memorial was opened by

John Becker, President of the Deputy Sheriff’s Police Benevolent Association, and also featured Louis Viscusi, President of the Suffolk County Corrections Officers’ Association.

Looked on by the attendees in a somber ceremony, each of the 70 members of the Sheriff’s Office and Department of Corrections died in the line of duty between 1887 and 2013 had a bell rung in their memory.

My alma mater, Lindy High School, recently held its senior prom last week, bringing to mind my own end-of-year soirees which took place so many years ago.

Our senior prom was, of course, a highlight; even more so for the fact that it was held at the top of the World Trade Center, at the one and only Windows on the World. What a magical night it was, and what an unforgettable time we had celebrating among the clouds, overlooking the greatest city in the world.

Often forgotten in the recollections of high school, however, was the equally memorable evening we had at our junior prom. Held at the famed Narragansett Inn, it brought the elegance of our first “real” dance to our hometown, complete with swirling gowns and high heels, and hair and makeup appointments for all on the afternoon of the big event. Remember, at this point,

sweet sixteen’s had yet to take on the extravagance of a small wedding, and proms truly were the formal affairs of the age.

Everything down to the smallest detail was coordinated, from corsage colors to jewelry and accessories, to the tiny flowers and rhinestone clips which adorned many of the girls’ hair. The class voted on their pick for “Junior Prom Song” in the weeks leading up to the event, forgoing the more current hits for a classic from Long Island’s own Billy Joel, “This is the Time.”

I remember taking pictures beforehand at my grandparents’ house, walking down the big staircase and masquerading in all sorts of corny poses for the camera. This, of course, predated the advent of cell phones and the notorious “selfies” of today; but every single collection of friends had the same standard photo in front of their limo, couples angled inward, corsages on display.

There was something elegant in the simplicity.

Junior prom was a bit more casual for our group. Instead of a limo, we carpooled. Instead of any post-prom festivities, we stopped off at McDonald’s on the way home – in the excitement of the evening, it seems no one had really taken the time to sit down and eat. We were too busy taking photos by the grand piano in the lobby, cheering on the prom court…and dancing, of course.

I remember coming home that night and sitting up for hours, recollecting every last detail of the evening to my parents, still in my gown and high heels, my hair a little disheveled but none the worse for wear, not wanting the day to end.

Sure, senior prom may have had the pomp and circumstance and the expectation of great things; but junior prom, for me, far exceeded all that. It was, truly the time to remember.

Teacher of Excellence

For her tremendous service and dedication, Sayville’s Elementary Literacy Facilitator Kathleen Scully received the 2017 Teacher of Excellence award from Senator Boyle at a recent ceremony. Ms. Scully was recommended for this award by Dr. John Stimmel, Sayville Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, who stated: “Ms. Scully is an outstanding professional who has dedicated her career to teaching children to read and write. She teaches with a passion that is contagious. Children and colleagues alike pick up Ms. Scully’s enthusiasm for the language arts. This enthusiasm turns writing from a chore into an activity that her students want to dive into.

Ms. Scully started her career in Sayville in 1988 as a second grade teacher. She has served in a variety of capacities since then. After five years as a classroom teacher, Ms. Scully transitioned to

the reading department, working as a reading specialist for twelve years.

Throughout her career, she has dedicated a great deal of time and energy as a member on many committees. These committees/positions include: Evaluation and Observation Revision Committee, New Teacher Orientation, teacher mentor for a new colleague, Elementary Curriculum Leadership Council, District Elementary Data Committee, as well as serving as the Mentor Program Coordinator for the entire district.

At the building level, Ms. Scully has been a member of the Data Team Committee, working on raising the bar of instruction using the Response to Intervention (RTI) approach. Besides servicing students who received Academic Intervention Services (AIS) and RtI, Ms. Scully pushed into classrooms delivering whole-class instruction based on “Text Savvy” and “Note and Notice.”

These opportunities not only provided students with exposure to effective reading strategies, but assisted classroom teachers by increasing their knowledge of literacy.

Ms. Scully also finds the time to volunteer countless hours as the Sayville Teachers Association Executive Vice President. Beginning in the fall of 2017, she was appointed to a new position as the Elementary Literacy Facilitator. In this role Ms. Scully is responsible for coordinating elementary language arts activities across the district. She works with colleagues to insure that they have the materials and professional development necessary to support effective instruction.

Ms. Scully can be counted on to present herself as a consummate professional. Her passion for literacy and working with children is second to none. When making decisions the notion, “what’s best for kids” and “putting children first” are always at the forefront.

She holds herself and her colleagues to a high degree of excellence, which was especially evident when selecting a new English Language Arts program.

As a teacher leader and role model, Ms. Scully is extremely deserving of this recognition for all that she has accomplished.”

Breakfast of Champions

It’s the most important meal of the day, “they” say, but at Sayville High School, the semiannual Breakfast of Champions - a fifteen year tradition - is important for other reasons. It is a time to stop and take note of those students who through their positive conduct have made a difference in the lives of others and provided the essential components for a successful High School Community.

During her words of welcome to the twentythree 2017 Spring Breakfast of Champions recipients and their families, Assistant Principal Jillian Makris acknowledged that “… these students aren’t here because of one solitary act that they have performed.

They are here for their daily contributions. These are the students who truly help to make up the moral fabric of our school community. They’re driven by an innate set of values and they are always striving to be their best…not simply in school work or

a grade on the transcript, but really in life as human beings.”

The deserving Champs were nominated by Sayville High School teachers and staff and recognized for consistently demonstrating qualities of kindness, humility, motivation, compassion, enthusiasm, diligence, and good citizenship beyond the classroom or athletic field or for achieving their personal best by striving to overcome major obstacles.

After each staff personalized his or her appreciation for a particular recipient (see comments below), each student received a Breakfast of Champions certificate and plaque created with their portrait on a Wheaties Box background.

The heartwarming Breakfast ended with a tasty breakfast of scrambled eggs, scrambled eggs’ n cheese, French Toast, bacon, sausage patties, fresh fruit bowl, assorted bagels and rolls that were served up with a

smile by the Sayville Food Service. And special thanks go to the members of the Sayville String Quartet and Mr. Ari Kramer for the lovely musical interludes.
