Wellbridge Welcomes Oakley The Therapy Dog As Newest Team Member
Wellbridge, a Calvertonbased addiction treatment center, doubled the amount of patients it saw over the last year. Their personalized approach to care addresses the needs of patients entering treatment for the first time, as well as those who have been through rehabilitation previously and are seeking a more sustainable path to longterm recovery. Substance Use Disorder is a chronic, treatable illness and the Wellbridge approach examines the causes of a patient’s substance use and treats the whole person.
Struggling with substance use can be a lonely experience for patients, who are typically away from their friends and families.
That is why, in addition to a variety of evidence-
based treatments, established research, patient experience, quality metrics, and outcomes, Wellbridge employs the services of one four-legged, furry volunteer.
Oakley, a two year old English Labrador Retriever, is a certified therapy dog that has been the newest addition to the team. After completing an extensive training program that included time at assisted living facilities, hospitals and nursing homes, Oakley began her rounds at Wellbridge.
Each Saturday, Oakley and her owner, Wellbridge’s Krystal Keillor, spend hours working with groups of patients. Over the course of several 45 minute sessions, Oakley works her way around a circle of

seated patients, greeting each of them, often receiving belly rubs in return.
Keillor, who is a Certified Recovery Peer Advocate at Wellbridge, relies on her canine sidekick to be there as she provides supportive services and a recovery plan for patients. The comfort that Oakley provides is palpable for staff and patients.
“The patient response has been nothing short of incredible,” said Keillor. “Patients have stated that they come to the group with anxiety, stress, and depression. When they leave a group, they feel the complete opposite expressing calmness, serenity, gratitude, hopefulness, happiness.”
When not working in a group setting, Oakley is at Keillor’s

side, supplementing therapeutic visits with her soothing presence. This is particularly important during the difficult detoxification portion of patients’ stay. Withdrawal from any substance can be painful and debilitating. Moreover, many patients are missing their own pets at home while in treatment, and Oakley serves as an able stand-in.
In spite of her youth, Oakley brings advanced experience in treatment. She has been in longterm care facilities since being eight months old, previously serving at a separate treatment center in Connecticut. When she’s not working, Oakley lives with Keillor and the rest of their family in Wading River, NY.
Breakfast Celebrates Seniors
- Each year, the Town of Islip Volunteer Breakfast pays tribute to all those senior volunteers who are kind enough to help out at their local senior centers. “These volunteers make valuable contributions to the success of the day-to-day schedules at our many Town of Islip Senior Centers,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “Whether serving meals, calling BINGO, welcoming newcomers or assisting with parties, their contributions are essential, and this event is our way of saying ‘thank you,’” said the Supervisor. Supervisor Carpenter presented each volunteer with a Town of Islip Certificate acknowledging their volunteerism. The event was held at beautiful Brookwood Hall in East Islip.

Senator Mattera And Long Island Cares Join Together To Help Protect Pets
New York State Senator Mario R. Mattera (2nd Senate District) is proud to join with Long Island Cares to help protect pets throughout our region. To assist the organization’s 12th Annual Legislative Pet Food Drive Challenge, Senator Mattera’s district office will serve as a collection point for pet supplies to help the charity restock Baxter’s Pet Pantry to help ensure that Long Island families in need are able to care for their pets.
Long Island Cares, in partnership with the Animal Relief Fund Inc. (ARF), created Baxter’s Pet Pantry in 2009 to help pet-owning families throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties get the supplies they need. In addition to providing pet food, the Pet Pantry offers toys, pet clothes and other pet necessities.
From now until Wednesday, May 31st,
Senator Mattera’s Office will be collecting pet supplies for cats, hamsters, dogs, fish, birds, ferrets and others. To make it convenient, a donation box will be at Senator Mattera’s District Office located at 180 East Main Street, Suite 210, Smithtown, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Long Island Cares has stated that its most needed pet items are:
• 5 or 10 pound bags of dog and cat food
• Canned food for dogs and cats
• Dog and cat treats
• Collars and leashes
• Food For all animals including birds, fish, ferrets and hamsters
• Fish food
• Cat litter
• Small new toys
According to the organization, all donated pet
food must be unopened and in its original packaging. For health reasons, the organization will not accept opened bags, ripped bags or loose pet food.
“Anyone who has a family pet knows that they are not just animals; they are a part of the family. When a family falls on hard times, as many in our community have in the past couple of years, it is difficult for them to provide for everyone – including pets. I thank Long Island Cares for their efforts and am glad to support their efforts to help ensure that pets can stay in their homes, with their families, where they belong,” said Senator Mattera.
For additional information on Long Island Cares or Baxter’s Pet Pantry, please visit Senator Mattera’s website at mattera.nysenate. gov.

Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive Returns Saturday, May 13, 2023
Island Harvest Food Bank, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), and the United States Postal Service (USPS) are pleased to announce the return of the annual Stamp Out Hunger®, the nation’s most extensive one-day food collection campaign. This year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive is on Saturday. May 13, 2023, and all food collected in Nassau and Suffolk counties will benefit Island Harvest in providing much-needed supplemental food support to more than 300,000 Long Islanders who face hunger and food insecurity, including nearly one-third who are children.
“Participating in Stamp Out Hunger is easy,” says Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest. “Generous Long Islanders are encouraged to leave nonperishable food items in a bag next to their mailbox before the regularly scheduled mail delivery on Saturday, May 13, 2023. Then, your USPS letter carrier will do the rest to help make sure that no one on
Long Island goes hungry.”
Non-perishable food items to be donated include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices and shelfstable milk (please, no food or juices in glass containers).
In addition, personal care items such as toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, and disposable diapers are accepted. All goods donated on Long Island will help replenish Island Harvest’s network of food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding programs in communities throughout Long Island.
“Every donation, no matter how small, helps our neighbors who are in the unenviable position of choosing between paying for such things as housing, transportation, and medicine or putting food on the table,” said Ms. Shubin Dresner. “I am confident that the past generosity displayed by our Long Island neighbors will help make this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive one of the most successful.”
Due to the pandemic, the

Stamp Out Hunger food collection was temporarily discontinued in 2020.
Since its inception in 1993, Stamp Out Hunger has collected more than 1.75 billion pounds of food in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin
Islands to help address the issue of hunger in America. On Long Island, Stamp Out Hunger brought in over 519,000 pounds of food in 2019 before the event was temporarily suspended from 2020 through 2022 due to the pandemic.
“The National Association
of Letter Carriers and the men and women we represent on Long Island are pleased to once again partner with Island Harvest in this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food collection,” said Tom Siesto, 1st Vice President, NALC Branch 6000. “Our carriers often see firsthand the pervasive issue of hunger as part of their daily rounds, and they are eager to help give back to the community and assist in helping Island Harvest Food Bank tackle this important issue.”
This year’s major sponsoring partners with Island Harvest on the NALC Stamp Out Hunger collection campaign include National Grid, JP Morgan Chase & Co., Amazon, Allstate, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Catholic Health, Nonna’s Garden, Long Island Federation of Labor, MCN Distributors, Dime Community Bank and New York Community Bank. All donations to Stamp Out Hunger are tax-deductible because all the food collected benefits Island Harvest, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit

Rumrunning in Suffolk County: Tales from Liquor Island, Thursday, May 11, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
Nicknamed “Liquor Island,” Long Island was a center of bootlegging and rumrunning for the New York metropolitan area during Prohibition. With its proximity to
major markets and coastal communities for easy transit, Suffolk County was awash in illegal hooch. Smugglers bringing cases of booze from offshore often secretly hid product temporarily in local garages and sheds, leaving a bottle as a thank-you. Coded communication crisscrossed the county on shortwave radios arranging sales and logistics. Violence
from criminal outfits disrupted previously quiet towns, as locals too often were swept up in dangerous unintentional engagements with bootleggers. Join author Amy Kasuga Folk as she recounts stories from her book. No registration required.
VIRTUAL/IN-PERSON: Invisible Labor: Women’s Work in Whaling
Communities, Wednesday, May 17, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Long Island was at the heart of commercial whaling, the U.S.A.’s fifth most profitable industry in the 19th century. Long Island Native women ensured industry success by their labor and the mechanisms of survival they built while men were absent, at sea. In this talk, local historian
Erin Becker discusses the role of Long Island Native women in this industry. This is a Zoom presentation that will be shown in the library or can be viewed from home. In-person: No registration required. Library members may register by visiting our website at www.connetquotlibrary. org.

The Girl Scouts Of Suffolk County Come Together For The Making An Impact Breakfast
Girl Scouts of Suffolk County (GSSC) recently held their 2023 Making an Impact Breakfast, featuring a panel full of Long Island industry leaders. Held in support of the Girl Scout Discovery World STEM & Art Center, the event highlighted the importance of the Girl Scout Mission and its many positive impacts on our society.
“Part of the Girl Scout’s mission is to help shape the leaders of tomorrow, and we were thrilled to have been joined by so many strong women in leadership for our Making an Impact Breakfast event to inspire our Girl Scouts,” said Tammy Severino, President & CEO of Girl Scouts of Suffolk County. “As women and girls, it is important to highlight these important discussions during this event, as they often get overlooked. We are extremely thankful to all that attended and supported this event as it will support many Girl Scouts, providing them access to experiences they otherwise would not have.”

Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School sixth grade students had a rare opportunity to attend a recent assembly with guest speaker, author and Holocaust survivor Marion Blumenthal Lazan. The students are currently reading her book, “Four Perfect Pebbles: A true story of the Holocaust,” about Mrs. Blumenthal Lazan’s experience in a concentration camp when she was only 9 years old.
Principal Joseph Piombo, during his introduction, told the students to “consider yourselves very
lucky and special. You are going to experience history firsthand.”
Mrs. Blumenthal Lazan spoke about the Nuremberg Laws and her trip to the infamous Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at the height World War II. She also explained the true story behind her book: If she collected four perfect pebbles, all of her family members would survive.
Mrs. Blumenthal Lazan told the students she has separated herself from what happened but realizes the importance of sharing
her experiences. She also appealed to the students to share her story with others.
“Please share the stories of the Holocaust,” she said. “It is you who will have to bear witness.”
Mrs. Blumenthal ended her assembly by asking students to have love, respect and tolerance toward one another, to look for similarities and respect differences, and to never generalize a group by the actions of others.

Zero Net Emissions
(NAPSI)—Zero net emissions of carbon dioxide from energy and industry can be achieved by 2050— and it could cost only about $1 a day, according to the peer-reviewed journal AGU Advances. For more information and to read the study, visit news.agu.org.
Autism And Children
According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls.
Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of
12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.
