Written In The Stars By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’ve never been one for astrology, but I recently came upon a site that analyzed such philosophies based upon the date, exact time and location of your birth, providing a detailed account of every personality trait imaginable. I have to admit, I was prepared to be skeptical of the results – until I read them.

So many characteristics were, shall we say, scarily accurate. The analysis was so in depth that even the most cynical person might take pause. From pinpointing my shy, somewhat introverted

nature to delving into my tendencies toward “bitter sarcasm,” it covered all aspects quite thoroughly.

I was impressed, to say the least.

So what conclusion should be drawn from these seemingly abstract signs and symbols? Are our personality traits pre-determined, based upon some random arrangement of the sun, moon and planets, or are we continuously shaped by the environments in which we are respectively raised?

It is an interesting concept to consider, especially taking into account the unexpected accuracy of this “reading.”

It coincides with the ageold question: can we alter our destinies, or is our fate predetermined? Normally, this contemplation is reserved for our path in life as a whole, not necessarily the many facets of our specific being – but the question is valid, nonetheless.

I suppose, as with anything, there is a happy medium of open mindedness and reservation that serves us best. Reading into anything can bring mixed results; but there is no substitute for stepping back and seeing a situation – or a person – for what it truly is.

watched short videos, entitled It Can Wait and another, Teen: Texting, driving ‘not worth your life’ about an actual teen who underwent 29 operations to recover from a near-fatal car accident caused by texting.

With the images of these videos fresh in their memories, the students were asked to calculate the distance covered with the duration of distractions while driving. “We used ratios and proportions to convert miles-per-hour

to feet-per-second,” Ms. Lindskog explained. “We timed the students texting a message to a dummy cellphone number (which generated an automated response), that Joe Skidmore had set up, then talked about how far they would go during the time it would take them to text a message if they were behind the wheel.”

It was a revelation to the students; one can only hope it will remain with them to ensure their long and healthy lives!

Since Mrs. Lena Hoag, wife of the editor of the Suffolk County News, called the first meeting in 1914, the Sayville Village Improvement Society has lived up to its commitment to make Sayville a better place. While it is the first civic organization in Sayville to celebrate its centennial, the Sayville Village Improvement Society has established long-running traditions that encourage each generation to take an interest.

As part their Hundredyear Anniversary celebration, the Sayville Village Improvement Society sponsored a poetry contest for Sayville students with the theme: Sayville, My Town.

“We were delighted by the overwhelming response and found it difficult to choose favorites.” Grace Papagno remarked on

behalf of the SVIS. “We thank all who participated and hope they and their families will help us in our continuing efforts to make Sayville a wonderful town in which to live.”

The works of three students in each of three categories (see attached), Kindergarten through 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade through 5th Grade, and 6th Grade through 8th Grade were selected by the judges. The will also be opportunity for some contestants to read their poems during the Sayville’s Got Talent event held at The Common Ground, while still others will have their poems on displayed in the Sayville Library and in various stores throughout the village.

Poems Selected

For the fifty-nine Seventh-graders and two Eighth-graders, the Sayville Middle School National Junior Honor Society annual induction was a well-earned reward.

These students, who have maintained a grade average of 95 or above for four quarters, exemplified the five attributes of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, Character, and Citizenship required to become a member of the prestigious National Junior Honor Society.

Middle School Principal Thomas Murray and NJHS advisor Mrs. LloydMatthews were proud to welcome the inductees and their families for the evening ceremony.

Assisting with the celebration, Eighthgrade society members participated by opening with the Pledge of Allegiance (Moira Mahoney), describing the five attributes: Scholarship (Jeremy Hirsch), Service (Michael Lofaro), Leadership (Jenna Deignan), Character (Philip Rinaldi, III), and Citizenship (Katheryn Donohue), announcing the inductees (Megan Collins, Devin Dolan, and Christina O’Leary), and lighting the symbolic candles (Gabriele Thornton). After all the new members received their certificates and handshakes from Mr. Murray on stage, they

returned to their seats where current member Amelia Flaumenhaft led the inductees in the NJHS pledge.

Closing the ceremony with parting words, Mrs. Lloyd-Matthews reminded the new members that they are required to continue upholding the attributes of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character as they complete their years at the Middle School, while Mr. Murray commended the students for bringing such pride to the Sayville Middle School community.

Competition always makes things more exciting. What better way to excite ninth- and tenth-grade Social Studies students about their research projects which promote college readiness than to have them enter their in-depth research into a competition?

For the first time, Sayville High School Social Studies students competed in the National History Day Research Competition at Hofstra

University with schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk. This year’s History Day theme was “Rights and Responsibilities.”

From the nine Sayville students selected to represent Sayville High School at the regional competition in March at Hofstra University, three earned “Student Achievement Awards” for their projects on the Holocaust and the Nuremberg Trials.

REMEMBERING A LIFE - Receiver of Taxes Alexis Weik recently attended a ceremony honoring the memory of Florence Evans, a Sayville resident who became a nurse during World War II. Florence Evans landed with Allied forces in North Africa, Sicily, and the Italian mainland. Later she was posted to France, where she was tragically killed in a jeep accident on the last day of the war. Every year, the veterans of the Smith-Weaver VFW Post in Sayville host a ceremony at her memorial site to honor her sacrifice.

Although it was a day of mathematical problemsolving, having fun at the “Wild West” themed Math Carnival in the Sayville elementary school was no mathematical problem for Cherry Avenue’s K-5 students.

Disguised as fun-filled physical activities that

challenged the body and the mind, the students engaged in competitive games that also helped them practice NYS standards for measurement.

Using their Horse Shoe data-collection sheets, the students compiled statistic of their progress throughout the Carnival

stations that had them herding cattle (balloons) into the corral, scooting to Mailboxes with packages for the Pony Express, and testing their throwing skills in Cow Chip Toss.

Extra time was spent estimating the quantity of assorted goodies in the Estimation Jars.

Cultural Exchange One could not have immediately spotted the visiting French high school students (from Brest, France) who blended with the Sayville High School students in the halls.They seemed typical in so many ways, except their faces wore the visitors’ expressions of wonder and excitement.

Sayville’s LOTE department was happy to welcome twenty-one FirstYear International Studies students along with their two French Chaperones Madame Robet (research teacher) and Mme Simpson (math teacher), for a day of “shadowing” and assimilation into American (specifically, Sayville, Long Island, New York) culture.

“They attend the Lycée St. Anne in Brest, France,” explained Sayville French teacher Mrs. Suzanne Hoss. “It is a private, Catholic high school where they are in a specialized international section. They receive between six- and eight-hours of instruction per week in French, but otherwise they learn not only English grammar, but English literature, history in English, geography in English and even Math in English!”

During the day-long visit to Sayville High School, some French students spoke to the classes each period. During one particular class visit with Mrs. Suzanne Hoss and Department Chair Lisa Gray, three French students explained their studies program, shared cultural differences and similarities, discussed shopping and the favorite stores (H& M, Zara, Macy’s) and one they hoped to visit state side (Abercrombie and Fitch). The students from both sides of the Atlantic enthusiastically exchanged opinions, mostly in French, about favorite television shows, music, linguistic expressions like “tropbien” and “stylé,” as well

as social networks.

The French students explained how at the secondary level their educational system differs from the United States.Not all students abroad participate in “higher education,” only those who have demonstrated

proclivities and required abilities in their “middle school” years continue onto an academic education.Also, European students do not participate in music or the arts during the typical class day as those areas are considered extracurricular and required an additional fee.

When asked about their preconceptions of Americans, some French students admitted they had been influenced by international news - Americans overeating too much fast food. They were pleasantly surprised to see an American classroom of trim Sayville students. In

turn, the French students explained they do not have a culture of ‘snacking’ between meals, because they don’t eat on the run, but enjoy wholesome foods at only three designated mealtimes.

At the request of one student, the French students were asked to share their favorite American accent. “Oh My God!” one French student offered tentatively, which made the whole class laugh appreciatively.

Those visiting students who were not speaking to classes followed their American (French 4H) counterparts through a regular school day and were chaperoned by Sayville LOTE teachers Mrs. Bricker and Mrs. Chirinchella.

As part of the activities with the French 4-Honors Class, the French students (Romain, Pierre, Vincente, Baptiste, Alexia, Ernestine, Cassandre, Jacquotte, Victor, Guillaume, Nolwenn, Victoire, Chloé M. Chloé S., Marianne, Inès, Nicolas, Pierre-Antoine, Nathan, Mailys, and Paul-Edouard) and their chaperones went into town afterschool for a “tour” of Sayville shops and eateries.

Later, they regrouped at the High School for pizza and music videos which had all the students dancing and singing.

“They danced to both French and American music.”

Mrs. Hoss recalled. “They danced to Happy and Wobbled, did the Macarena, Cotton Eyed Joe, and traditional Brittany dancing! One French girl sang for the group. It was amazing how they knew all the American music and dances. Some left teary eyed and sad to have to bid their amis Adieu!”
