Bayport-Blue Point National Junior Honor Society Raises Money For Local Family

James Wilson Young Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society was given the task of banding together to create their own community service projects. Members worked collaboratively to design and carry forth unique community service projects designed around what mattered to them personally. Some examples included beach cleanups and clothing drives. One specific group featuring Aila C., Pheobe B. and Abigail F. made a powerful impact on the community with their service project. These members took part in a local

bake sale to fundraise for a family in need of a service dog.

The girls explained that the “project was important because all the money donated is going to a family in need. This family has a young daughter with Dravet Syndrome. The money that we collect during the bake sale will go directly to the daughter’s Mom and toward a seizure dog. This is unique because everything we are making is handmade and with a purpose. We are trying to impact a family in need of some help. Not many people have Dravet Syndrome, and we are going to make an

impact on one of the few people who has it in our community. This seizure dog will help to always protect this little girl and will keep her safe. Dravet syndrome is a dangerous condition and every dollar we make will go to benefit this family and help them to overcome this condition.”

The girls raised a $931.00 for the family. About the amazing actions of the group, National Junior Honor Society Co-Advisors Mr. Peshkur and Ms. Burns said, “It is an honor to work with such compassionate, thoughtful, and dedicated young people. Their

Sagamore Middle School Supports Fight Against Cancer

Sagamore Middle School in the Sachem Central School District recently held two events to help support the fight against cancer.

During the school day on March 31, the building held its St. Baldrick’s event. A combination of students and staff members shaved their head in solidarity for children battling cancer. In doing so, the shavees collected funds from family

and friends to support life-saving research.

Sagamore’s St. Baldrick’s team raised $4,500 for children’s cancer research. The team additionally held a combined event with Long Island Disc Golf, raising a total of $20,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. In the last 15 years, the entire Sachem community has raised more than $500,000 for the organization.

Connetquot Central School District To Induct Nine To Athletic Hall Of Fame

The tournament, along with the building’s Pi Day fundraiser earlier in the month, raised more than $1,700.

Hall of Fame inductees are selected by a committee of veteran coaches, teachers and administrators from nominations submitted by qualified, graduated Connetquot studentathletes, coaches and community members.

New York Blood Center Declares First Blood Emergency Of 2023

New York Blood Center (NYBC) declared the first blood emergency of 2023. The blood emergency is due to several evolving factors, including recent poor weather, school breaks and cold and flu season. Last month, NYBC and its divisions across the nation received 6,000 fewer blood donations than the year prior and blood donations are 12% below hospital and patient needs.

The number of blood donations still are not back to pre-pandemic levels. Compounding the problem is a continued lag in firsttime and youth donors, which remain about half of pre-pandemic levels. And while New Yorkers are returning to in-person work, office and community blood drives and visits to NYBC Donor Centers are significantly down. People working from home had an easier time donating in our donor centers, but we’re seeing a dramatic decrease at our centers.

“Each winter, we struggle to get folks to donate blood and this year is no exception. We need more New Yorkers to make blood donations, host blood drives and spread the word about the need for donations,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Senior

Vice President at New York Blood Center. “Last year, we expanded our reach with a new donor center, and we recently announced new donor guidelines from the FDA; we are expanding in every way we can in order to reach new donors. This March, make a blood donation and tell a friend!”

In addition to whole blood donors, platelet donors are urgently needed. With a shelf life of just 7 days, NYBC relies on dedicated platelet donors to help patients undergoing chemotherapy, those with bleeding disorders, new mothers, and more.

Blood donors can give every 56 days, and platelet donors can give twice per month. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently lifted eligibility restrictions for individuals who lived in Europe during certain periods of time. To view current eligibility guidelines, visit nybc.org or call 800.688.0900.

The need is constant, but the supply is not. Visit nybc.org to schedule an appointment to donate, or call 800.933.2566.

NEW YORK BLOOD CENTER ENTERPRISES/ NEW YORK BLOOD CENTER was founded in 1964, New York Blood Center Enterprises (NYBCe)

is one of the largest nonprofit, independent, community blood centers in the world. Along with partner organizations Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD), Community Blood Center of Kansas City (CBC), Connecticut Blood Center (CTBC), Memorial Blood Centers (MBC), Nebraska Community Blood Bank (NCBB), and Rhode Island Blood Center (RIBC), we collect approximately 4,000 units of blood products each day and serve communities approaching 50 million people in the tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT), mid-Atlantic area (PA, DE, MD), Kansas City metropolitan area, Minnesota, Nebraska, Rhode Island, and Southern New England. NYBCe delivers lifesaving blood products and services as well as clinical, medical, pharmaceutical, testing, and consultative services to over 600 hospitals and dozens of research organizations, academic institutions, and biomedical companies. Among other milestones, our Lindsley F. Kimball Research Institute pioneered the Hepatitis B vaccine and patented a solvent detergent plasma process, innovating bloodpurification technology worldwide.

Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers. The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind

the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.

Helping You Help Others

The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together

Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

The beneficiaries of RTLI’s work, lowincome homeowners struggling to get by, are so appreciative of the repairs and modifications that this organization does to keep them safe and improve their quality of life. “I was desperate,” said a widow of a Navy veteran who welcomed RTLI’s helping hand. “Now I have so much less stress and a more comfortable and safer house.”

Another recent client said, “Thank you for treating my home like it was yours. You all showed professionalism, caring and impeccable workmanship. You made my home more livable and safer. You are doing a beautiful thing and should be very proud.” These words lift the spirits of the hardworking RTLI volunteers.

Their small o ce in Farmingdale has only one employee, so their volunteers are really a significant part of what they do. “Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization,” said Stella Hendrickson, President of RTLI. “Almost all are retired. They give their time, their talents, their expertise and their hearts

to those who need a helping hand.”

The volunteer teams work tirelessly to help our neighbors, traveling throughout Long Island, using their own cars and tools. They come from all walks of life and professions, from teachers to principals, business owners, social workers, administrative assistants, accountants and truck drivers. The list goes on and on, but they all have one thing in common; their commitment to do the right thing, give back, lend a hand and be there for someone in need.

Here are ways you can get involved:

•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.

www.rebuildingtogether.org CHILLI 9 month old male. White and ginger Tabby. Handsome boy.

•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.

•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.

•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.

When we work together, we can bring about transformational change quickly in our communities.

- John Pearl Elementary School feels it is important to give back to the community. Organized by teacher aide Maryetta Durkalski, students held a drive for the Town of Islip’s Animal Shelter. The students collected blankets, toys, food and more. Mrs. Durkalski stated, “I’m really happy that everyone participated in this important drive, because they will be helping out so many pets at the shelter that need supplies.”  Photo courtesy of the Connetquot Central School District

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian Announces Stable Spirits Art Show And Auction Fundraiser

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. (www.pal-o-mine.org, Islandia, NY), a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, announced that it will holding an art show and auction on Thursday, May 4th, 2023 from 5:30 PM–8:30 PM at its facilities located at 829 Old Nichols Rd, Islandia, NY 11749. The Stable Spirits Art Show and Auction Fundraiser will feature the artwork of local artists of all ages and art mediums and styles. In addition to the art show and auction, the event will include a selection of wines from local vineyards paired with small bites by Sommelier Jun Xi Chen, assisted by restaurant professionals and fellow Culinary Institute of

America graduate, Megan Henne. Event ticket prices are $60.

“We are very excited to give local artists an opportunity to show their work, while also helping Pal-O-Mine raise funds for our new 2,000 square foot educational center, which will expand our onsite therapy and vocational services,” said Pal-O-Mine founder and CEO Lisa Gatti. Under the guidance of Splashes of Hope artists, attendees will also participate in an interactive mural process creating art to hang in the new center.

Artists will be notified of acceptance by email on March 17th, 2023. Artists must agree to donate 20% of each sale made at the event to Pal-O-Mine and donate one piece of art to Pal-O-Mine for use in future fundraisers.

Accepted artists will drop off their work at Pal-

O-Mine on Tuesday, May 2nd, 2023 between 9 AM and 5 PM. Each artist will have space in one of PalO-Mine’s barn stalls to display their art. Tables and

professional lighting will be provided for artists’ use during the event. Artists must bring any additional display materials they require (e.g., tablecloths,

Rumrunning in Suffolk County: Tales from Liquor Island, Thursday, May 11, 7:00 - 8:30 pm

Nicknamed “Liquor Island,” Long Island was a center of bootlegging and rumrunning for the New York metropolitan area during Prohibition. With its proximity to major markets and coastal communities for easy transit, Suffolk County was awash in illegal hooch. Smugglers bringing cases of booze from offshore often secretly hid product temporarily in local garages and sheds, leaving a bottle as a thank-you. Coded communication crisscrossed the county on shortwave radios arranging sales and logistics. Violence from criminal outfits disrupted previously quiet towns, as locals too often

were swept up in dangerous unintentional engagements with bootleggers. Join author Amy Kasuga Folk as she recounts stories from her book. No registration required.

VIRTUAL/IN-PERSON:

Invisible Labor: Women’s Work in Whaling Communities, Wednesday, May 17, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Long Island was at the heart of commercial whaling, the U.S.A.’s fifth most profitable industry in the 19th century. Long Island Native women ensured industry success by their labor and the mechanisms of survival they built while men were absent, at sea. In this talk, local historian Erin Becker discusses the role of Long Island Native women in this industry. This is a Zoom presentation that will be shown in the library or can be viewed from home. In-person: No registration required. Library members may register by visiting our website at www. connetquotlibrary.org.

Graham E. E. Bailey: Accidental Author, Thursday, May 18, 7:00 - 8:30 pm

During long commutes on the LIRR, the author began writing a book whose main character was inspired by an intriguing Russian man she met while adopting a child. Having struggled in school with reading and writing, she began the book in secret, not wanting the pressure of anyone else’s awareness of her process. Graham will share with you her insights into the writing process and into following your own dream. Library members may register by visiting our website at www. connetquotlibrary.org. For additional inquiries, please call the library at 631-5675079.

LaLota Announces Hundreds Of Defense Jobs Coming To Suffolk County

Rep. Nick LaLota (NY-01) announced that hundreds of new jobs would be coming to Suffolk County after Raytheon Technologies Corporation was awarded a contract by the federal government totaling $113,628,201. The contract will cover costs for Raytheon to develop MK 15 closein weapon system (CIWS) upgrades and conversions, system overhauls, and

associated hardware. One of the manufacturing facilities Raytheon will use for this contract is located in Hauppauge, N.Y.

“I am thrilled that hundreds of high-paying defense manufacturing jobs will be coming to Suffolk County. As the son of a former Grumman Secretary and a Navy Veteran, I understand how important the defense industrial base

is to local families and Long Island’s economy,” said LaLota. “Now, as a Member of the House Armed Services Committee, I understand the strategic role Long Island’s defense manufacturing base plays in ensuring America’s military can deter the next conflict, or if needed, win it. I will always work to make sure that Suffolk County maintains our important role in our nation’s defense.”
