LICADD Grant Received The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Richard & Mary Morrison Foundation for the Building Unique Dynamic and Diverse Youth (BUDDY) program.

The highly successful BUDDY (Building Unique, Dynamic, and

Diverse Youth) Mentoring Program was established in 2009 with $150,000 in competitive federal grant funding from the Administration for Children and Families, BUDDY addresses the critical needs of the most vulnerable members of our community, children whose parents have been incarcerated

Despite the elimination of federal funds, LICADD has not only maintained, but grown BUDDY into a robust program that has to date, successfully matched 75 at-risk children with screened/ trained adult mentors.

Random Rambles By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been a rough year. Less than four months in and, well, I know many people who are already looking for a do-over.

Sure, every period of time has its ups and downs, highs and lows. But honestly, since the moment the ball dropped in Times Square this past New Year’s Eve, it seems that everything began falling right along with it.

At least it’s Spring. There is something uplifting about sunshine-filled afternoons and flower blossoms that does bring a smile to the face, however fleeting it may be. And of course, those sunworshippers among us have to be looking forward to

summer and beach outings and barbeques.

But until then… It’s April.

April 15th, to be exact, as I write these words. Tax Day (although, technically speaking, we were graced with a few extra days tacked on to the filing deadline this year).

The Easter Bunny has come and gone. Baseball diamonds are abuzz with activity. Pretty soon, school will be out of session and the parks and pools will be flooded with families having fun.

And so it goes. From dawn until dusk, one season into the next, day after day, week after week, month after month; until, before you know it, a decade has passed in the blink of an eye. In just a couple of

weeks, I will be celebrating my 11th year as editor and columnist at this very paper.

How much has changed in that span of time…

The best thing we can do – the only thing, really – is to embrace each day, with all its nuances, and appreciate whatever it may bring into our respective lives. The list of things beyond our control is endless; the key to happiness lies in how we react to them, what we learn from them, and how we use them to better ourselves as individuals.

I’m no philosopher, but that much I’ve pick up in my 33 years roaming this planet.

Here’s wishing everyone a brighter tomorrow… and the day after… and the day after…

This program further facilitates the delivery of a wide range of support services to at-risk children of incarcerated parents helping to break the multi-generational cycle incarceration frequently fueled by addiction.

Fire Island Inlet Project On Tuesday, April 12th, the United States Army Corps of Engineers approved the Real Estate Certification completed by Suffolk County and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) for the Fire Island Inlet to Moriches Inlet (FIMI) Project, Contract 3, which

completes 18 months of real estate work conducted by the County and DEC. This real estate certification will allow the contract, which encompasses the Fire Island Communities from Fair Harbor to Seaview, to proceed. Contract 3A will place an estimated 1,400,000 cubic yards

of sand as a dune and berm system along the aforementioned communities. Bids to contract for the work will be received in May 2016 and contract will be awarded in June 2016.

Seeking New Volunteers Long Island volunteer firefighters, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY), fire officers, public safety officials, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and other elected officials will clang the bell for new recruits Thursday, April 21st, at 11 a.m. at the Nassau County Firefighters Museum & Education Center, on Museum Row in Garden City.

FASNY President Robert McConville will kick off Nassau and Suffolk Counties’ sixth annual RecruitNY campaign designed to help increase volunteer membership. The event, to which area firefighters have been invited to attend in dress uniform, and which will showcase fire rigs and apparatus from area departments, is a public service outreach to highlight the need for more volunteer firefighters.

Over the last few years, due to various factors including the state of the economy, family and financial responsibilities and current volunteers aging, retiring, and moving out of state, there has been a reduction in volunteer first-responder numbers.

During the RecruitNY 2016 Open House Weekend, Saturday, April 23rd, and Sunday, April 24th, volunteer fire departments across New York State will open their doors and fire truck bays to local residents as part of the statewide volunteer firefighter recruitment effort. Fire departments will conduct tours of their firehouses and fire apparatus, allow visitors to try on turnout gear, and provide visitor activities throughout the firehouse. Members will discuss the rewards and responsibilities that come with being a volunteer firefighter, as well as conduct demonstrations,

answer questions, and let visitors know how to go about joining their fire department.

FASNY recently released its first comprehensive volunteer firefighters economic impact report in more than a decade.

The study, which quantifies the value of volunteer firefighters and tax savings throughout the state, concluded that the annual cost of a replacement all-career service would be $3.87 billion. This deficit would raise property taxes across New York State an estimated average of 26.5%. Through the efforts of RecruitNY, volunteer firefighters make the state not only safer, but more affordable for millions of New Yorkers.

Music Lovers Scholarships The Music Lovers Club was founded in 1925 to share an interest in and appreciation of music, to extend to others the pleasure derived from and to provide scholarships to outstanding young musicians who are seniors in high school and live in the towns of Babylon and Islip. The hope is that these scholarships will help foster the continuation of their musical development.

This year, as they celebrate their 90th year, they are proud to say that on Sunday, April 24th, they will be presenting their 66th annual Scholarship Benefit Concert.

The performers for the

concert will be this year’s winners. They will join a list of almost 200 other winners from the past 65 years. Following the performance, they will receive their scholarship awards.

This year’s winners are: • Third Place - Kwaku Owusu, Bay Shore High School, Baritone • Second Place Nicholas Burkel, Sayville High School, Cello • First Place - Sara Mercurio, West Islip High School, Alto Saxophone After the concert, there will be time to meet and

This is the final meeting and concert of the year.

General George Washington sought out a volunteer spy to gather intelligence on British troop movement. The first volunteer, Nathan Hale, was captured and eventually hung. Born in Setauket, Tallmadge recruited three of his trusted childhood friends to participate, Abraham Woodhull, Caleb Brewster and Austin Roe also of Setauket. The fifth member of the spy ring, Robert Townsend of Oyster Bay joined the ring at the urging of Abraham Woodhull.

Tallmadge developed a sophisticated system of numbers assigned to each individual, a series of codes, embedded messages and the use of invisible ink to preserve the safety of the spy ring, its members and correspondence. Through this intricate web, messages were transported

to General Washington.

In 1780 French troops headed to Newport Rhode Island to assist the Patriots in their fight for independence. With this discovery, British troops headed to Newport.

The Culper ring sent a false message about an impending invasion of New York and the British turned around and headed back. This event turned the tide of the American Revolution and the fight for independence. This 55 mile trek from Setauket to New York City was a lifeline in the battle for independence.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS - At the April 7th Town Board Meeting, Councilman Kevin LaValle and the Town Board honored the Sachem East and Sachem North Varsity Arrowettes Dance Teams for winning the 2016 National Dance Alliance (NDA) National Championship held in Orlando, Florida. Sachem East won in the Medium Varsity Jazz category and also won the Long Island Championships in the Jazz, Hip Hop, Kick and Team categories on their way to the National Championship. Sachem North won in the Small Varsity Jazz, Small Varsity Hip Hop and Small Varsity Team categories and was nominated for a Sportsmanship Award. On Long Island, they were undefeated for their second year in a row, participating in three competitions and receiving 12 first place finishes. In addition, they performed at a Memorial Festival at Smithtown West High School in honor of a Smithtown West alumni who tragically passed away.

Fifth-grade students in Sally Miller’s class at Sylvan Avenue Elementary School joined together with Bayport-Blue Point High School seniors from Kerri McGuire’s classes to participate in the district’s second Cultural Brunch and Book Exchange funded by the SEED Foundation.

During the event, the high school’s Spanish

students traveled to Sylvan to meet face-to-face with the fifth-graders for whom they had each written a personalized book in Spanish. After meeting and reading their books, the seniors conducted minilessons with the elementary students on how to order the empanadas, tropical juices and fruits that would be served for the cultural

brunch. Many students loved having the chance to sample food from Spanishspeaking countries that they had never tried before.

The day’s events culminated in music and an enthusiastic game of BRAVO (aka bingo). The fifth-grade students used their knowledge of what they’ve learned this year in order to play.

RECEPTION HELD - Family Residences and Essential Enterprises (FREE) held a “Meet the Artists” reception at the Patchogue-Medford Library on 54-60 East Main Street in Patchogue. The reception was held to honor artists participating in their Fine Art and Art Therapy Programs who have their mixed media constructions exhibited at the library throughout the month of April. Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory attended the annual Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) New York Metro Law Enforcement Recognition Luncheon held Thursday, April 7th, at the Crest Hollow County Club.

“It was an honor and a pleasure to be invited to MADD’s annual luncheon honoring the dedicated police officers who are in the front lines of the battle against drunk driving,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “I was especially glad to see Suffolk County Police, Suffolk Sheriffs

and the Suffolk District Attorney’s office honored for their hard work to end drunk driving. Our Chief Deputy Sheriff, Michael P. Sharkey, received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the luncheon.”

“I was pleased to see MADD honor Chief Deputy Sheriff Starkey for all his hard work to battle the scourge of drunk driving,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “It was a richly deserved honor.”

Suffolk County Police Officers honored at the event included Kevin Csoka, Avital Donnenfield, Douglas Nassissi, Francesco Saracino,

Weldon Drayton Jr., John Mercurio, Joshua W. Parsons and Christopher Weiner. Officers Harry Jos and Roger Kleber of the SAFE-T team were also honored. From the Sheriff’s Department, Deputy Sheriff Brian Grazidel and Deputy Sheriff Investigator William Weick were honored.

Receiving Recognition of Excellence Awards were members of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, including Assistant DA Patricia Brosco, Detective Steven Jacobs and Detective Sergeant James Madded.

Safe Transaction Zones Sheriff’s deputies will not participate in the exchanges or act as official witnesses in transactions.

Most purchase agreements and transactions are civil matters. However with deputies nearby, the area will be safer for buyers and sellers and will deter criminals who want commit crimes against others.

Citizens are encouraged to use the area during daylight hours and will not have to schedule an appointment with the Sheriff’s Office.

A Walk to Remember On Saturday, May 7th, 2016 Angela’s House will be hosting their 1st Annual Walk aptly titled: Angel of Hope: A Walk to Remember. This event will take place at Eisenhower Park, where the statue has stood since 2008. During the past eight years we have had a candle light vigil on the first Saturday of December that gives hope to over 300 that attend this spiritual gathering.

Due to popular demand we have created this event as the second gathering of the year.

The Angel was brought to Long Island by Bob Policastro the founder of Angela’s House. It comes from a best-selling book and television movie called The Christmas Box

by Richard Paul Evans, who inspired this statue.

In the story, an elderly woman mourns the death of her little daughter by making regular trips to the child’s grave, which is marked with an angel statue (Angel of Hope). The statue evokes a profound and miraculous connection between mother and child and helps convey valuable lessons about the true meaning of life to others. This simple, nonreligious but spiritual story has brought hope to thousands of parents who have endured the death of a child.

As spring begins, Mother’s Day is celebrated by most families, but sadly there are many who walk

with the pain of losing a child. They always have a space in their heart where that love is still carried. Our hope is to allow the Angel of Hope to be a reminder that the love shared with their child was a blessing and can always be cherished and remembered. All who knew the child, but especially their parents, need to feel hope that they will survive and move on, and that these children will never be forgotten.

Registration for the event will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. at the Kite Field, located next to the statue, which is located in the Veterans Memorial section of Eisenhower Park. Parking field 6 is the ideal location to park.

Our ceremony, which will begin by 10:15 a.m., will include a 20 minute non-religious, nondenominational, Spiritual Ceremony which has been written to be reflective, focusing on the love that is missed and will always be carried by the loved ones of these children.

Led by Executive Director, Bob Policastro, we will also be joined by our guest speaker is David Roberts, who lost his daughter in 2003 from Cancer. David speaks nationally at conferences, writes blogs reflecting his life experiences for the Huffington Post, Open to Hope and various other online periodicals and websites. In addition, Interfaith Minister, Rev. Patty Furino will lead a

quiet reflection, and a simple prayer to inspire peace.

To conclude the ceremony we have invited the voices of choirs and chorus’s from around Long Island. Members of the New Apostolic Church and the Willow Interfaith Women’s Choir will lead the attendees and participants in singing “Clouds,” a beautifully touching song written by Zach Sobiech, who touched so many lives with this song, and continue to do so despite losing his battle to cancer a few years ago. Upon its completion, the attendees will then follow a path around Salisbury Lake, hopefully inspired to look up at the clouds, knowing their child has been remembered and cherished. The walk, which is less than a mile long, will conclude at the statue. We hope to invoke the feeling of faith and hope and make this event an inspiring day for all who participate. We truly believe this type of event will help families dealing with the loss of a child during Mother’s Day weekend.

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office has created two Safe Transaction Zones designed to help protect citizens from various crimes associated with online transactions including robberies, thefts and assaults.

Future planning will expand this initiative to additional locations.

The safe transaction zones are located at the Sheriff’s Office, 100 Center Drive in Riverhead and at our Yaphank Facility, (address). Both are clearly marked with red and white signs and are in full view of on duty Deputy Sheriffs.

Over time these areas will be enhanced with video cameras.

Citizens are encouraged to use the marked areas as a place to meet and conduct transactions that require in-person exchanges of online purchases.

Helping Hunger The 2015 National League pennant champions New York Mets are once again teaming up with Island Harvest Food Bank for the annual “Home Run to End Hunger” event, sponsored by Petro Home Services, to raise funds to help provide food support to the more than 300,000 Long Islanders who face hunger each and every day.

Members of the Gemini Youth Orchestra Concert Winds were welcomed recently to the March General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature.

Under the direction of Valerie Jones, the Concert Winds Ensemble performed our National Anthem and Trumpet Voluntary to open the

meeting. The Gemini Youth Orchestras is composed of 250 musicians from across Long Island, who perform in ensembles including the Concert Winds, Philharmonia, String Orchestra, Repertory and Youth Symphony.

While financial abuse and scams are believed to cost seniors an estimated $3 billion annually, you can help prevent them and protect yourself.

For example, here are some steps you can take: • Plan your financial future with trusted family members, friends and professionals. If managing your daily finances is difficult, consider engaging a money manager.

• Talk with a lawyer

about creating a durable power of attorney for asset management, a revocable or living will, and trust and health care advance directives.

• Don’t be pressured or intimidated into quick financial decisions or sign any documents you do not completely understand.

• Never provide personal information (Social Security number, credit card) over the phone unless you placed the call and know with whom you are speaking.

• Tear up or shred

credit card receipts, bank statements, solicitations and financial records before disposing of them.
