fencing, a good windblock will help shelter other plants from blowing sand and salt. Just be sure to plan the windblock to stop most of the oncoming wind in a way that your water views are not compromised.

• Amend the soil. Few things grow well in sandy soil on their own. Unless you’re thinking of solely planting cacti and other succulent plants that don’t require much water from the soil, it will be necessary to amend the soil to include nutrients and a more hospitable growing base. Sand is good for drainage, but it cannot retain enough moisture to be viable for most plants.

Therefore a healthy mix of nutrient-rich soil, compost and fertilizer can provide the right start.

• Consider sun and heat exposure. Select plants that are hardy in warm-weather, full-sun conditions.

Droughttolerant plants are a good idea. Choose among varieties that have waxy

leaves to repel salt and sand and low-growing types that will have more protection from the sun.

Should you want to plant other flowers and plants, you may have to consider creating shade with moderately-sized bushes or trees. Yucca plants thrive seaside, as does ornamental pampas grass.

Brightly colored ice plants and cosmos flowers can add splashes of color.

• Add costal accessories.

Typically seaside gardens are enhanced with knicknacks and other items that are specific to coastal living. Pilings with rope, small anchors, sea shells, nautical accents, and much more can be used to fill in bare areas of the garden and create places for birds and other animals to explore.

While there can be some challenges to seaside gardening, it is possible to plant a seaside garden if gardeners choose wisely among heat-, sand- and drought-tolerant plants.

Brisk winds and salt spray can enhance the experience of living by the seaside. But the same features of coastal living that attract residents can be unkind to many garden plants.

Gardening can be a rewarding and relaxing hobby, one that allows gardeners to escape from the daily grind and soak up some sun. As rewarding as gardening can be, it’s even more so when gardeners ply their trade in an ecofriendly way.

Gardening with the environment in mind is something many gardeners might do already without even knowing it. The following are a few ways to garden in a way that’s mutually beneficial to gardeners and the environment.

• Use mulch to conserve resources and reduce reliance on fertilizers.

Conserving resources is one of the best ways to help the environment, and applying mulch is a great way to conserve water.

Mulch helps the soil retain water, keeping the water from evaporating into the air, which means less watering for gardeners who want to keep their gardens looking lush and healthy.

In addition to helping conserve water, mulch can also help reduce reliance on fertilizers.

That’s because mulch provides nutrients to the soil as it breaks down, providing an eco-friendly alternative for gardeners who don’t want to rely on fertilizers to deliver nutrients to their soil.

• Plant more flowers.

Planting flowers is another eco-friendly way to garden. Native flowers, in particular, can help maintain an area’s natural ecosystem, providing food and shelter for insects and other wildlife.

Turning Points By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Discovering The Passion To Do What You Love… That was the topic I chose to speak on at the recent C.W. Post Honors Program Conference. The good news? Every last student in attendance at the standing room only panel had something they were passionate about and, in an ideal world, wished to pursue as a career. The bad news? Most they seemed all too content to relegate these passions to a mere hobby, rather than even giving the dreams a fleeting chance to exist in their own, real world.

Musicians majoring in Chemistry, Artists majoring in Finance… This is not to say that all fields don’t hold some sort of fulfilling promise – but

just choosing a major for the sake of picking something, anything… well, I can’t say I support that philosophy wholeheartedly. And as for the money factor; well that only goes so far in dictating happiness. Say what you will about being able to purchase all the comforts and extravagances you like, but if you spend the majority of your life just going through the motions of a 9-5 job, I think it’s safe to assume no amount of compensation will make up for it.

I’m not sure I made much of an impression on these students, as many are already well on their way to graduation and seem fairly set to continue on their chosen path. Others were a bit more open-minded, willing to put themselves out there and

explore – at least in the short term – for even the slightest chance at success in something they truly enjoyed. And still others remained undecided, juggling several interests while in the process of making that all-important decision of which direction to head in.

I suppose the most important point I tried to make, and the one I attempt to follow myself, is that, no matter what decisions you make along the way, there is always room to change course, start fresh, adapt on the go… nothing is set in stone unless you allow it to be. As we grow and mature, so do our dreams, and what once may have seemed impossible could very well become a genuine possibility down the road.

But emphasizing recycled products shouldn’t stop at the tool shed. Mulch, for instance, can be made from recycled rubber and won’t impact the environment in a negative way. Just be sure to purchase recycled mulch that is nontoxic and does not consume natural resources.

• Live and let live.

Insects might be a nuisance, but they can also be a gardener’s best friend.

Spraying insecticide simply because insects can be pesky is shortsighted and impractical. Certain spiders prey on other insects that can be harmful to a garden, while butterflies and bees help pollenate flowers.

Earthworms are also very beneficial to a garden, helping to aerate and fertilize the soil and enabling plants to grow by removing harmful matter from the soil.

Gardening is a rewarding hobby, one that is even more so when

gardeners institute ecofriendly practices.

Maintaining Fresh Cut Flowers Fresh flowers serve many purposes. A bouquet of flowers can be a gift on a special holiday or birthday. Some people apologize with flowers, while others use flowers to convey feelings of love or appreciation. Many people like to display fresh-cut flowers in their homes because their beauty can brighten the mood indoors.

Others plant rows and rows of flowers in a garden with the express purpose of cutting them and bringing them into the home.

While outdoor flowers can remain beautiful and bountiful outside, once they are cut, there is a limited amount of time

before they begin to wilt and wither. But there are ways to prolong the life of cut flowers to enjoy their beauty as long as possible.

• Cut correctly. Creating a large enough surface area on the stem for the uptake of water is essential. That is why florists recommend cutting the stem on a slant to expose more area to the water.

• Place flowers in water immediately. Some people advocate cutting the stems while they’re actually submerged in water.

However, you will probably be fine if you simply recut the stems on flowers you brought inside and immediately put them in a

vase of water. The key is not to let the tip of the stem dry out or close up with an air bubble, sap or other substances, preventing the uptake of water. Be sure to use lukewarm water so as not to shock the blooms.

• Remove leaves. Take off the leaves of the plant that would end up underwater in the vase. Exposure to the water could cause the leaves to rot and fall off, creating algae or sludge in the vase water. It also may breed extra bacteria or attract small insects to the water. However, do not to remove the thorns from roses, as this tends to shorten their shelf life.

• Choose young flowers.

Mature flowers may have peaked and begun to make room for a new round of blooms, so try to choose young buds or blooms that just opened so that you’ll have an opportunity to enjoy them longer.

• Create a viable water atmosphere. Once a fresh flower is cut and a stem is placed in water, bacteria and fungi can start to grow almost immediately. These microscopic organisms can clog the small tubes inside the stem that suck up water for nourishment.

Many florists send home a packet of water additive to alleviate some problems in the indoor environment.

The packet will contain a

biocide that kills bacteria and fungi. There will be an acidifier as well as sugar. The acidifier makes the water more acidic to allow better absorption of water up the stem. The sugar is a food source for the flowers. Homeowners who cut flowers from their gardens can purchase these additives or create their own variations from items around the house.

It has been said a penny in the water will kill the microorganisms because copper is a fungicide.

An aspirin can make the water more acidic. You can also try small amounts of bleach, lemon-lime soda or even antiseptic

mouthwash.

• Keep flowers away from ... Don’t place cut flowers next to fruit, which gives off gases as it ripens, causing flowers to age faster. Also, keep the flowers away from direct sunlight and try to keep them in a cool place.

• Change the water.

Keep on top of water maintenance by changing it at least every 2 to 3 days to maintain good water health. Be sure to replace the additives each time you change the water.

By following a few strategies you can keep fresh-cut flowers lasting longer for enjoyment.

can be built from wood and then painted or covered in padded fabric.

Store small items inside the ottoman, which can also serve as a table or additional seating. In

addition to an ottoman, a garden tool that can keep shovels and rakes organized. Homeowners with a deck can construct lidded deck boxes to store patio cushions or any

used to build play sets are plastic, metal and wood.

Plastic sets tend to be very basic and may be reserved for young children’s sets.

While they can go outside, they may not last more than a few years and are often best relegated to indoor toys.

Metal sets are some of the most durable and strong.

They are frequently seen at parks and playgrounds.

Metal play sets are often cemented down to a foundation for stability, which doesn’t make them ideal for a temporary set that will be removed when the kids outgrow it. Also, you cannot generally add onto a metal set.

Wooden sets are usually a compromise between the two. They’re good for backyards because they can be taken down when they’re no longer used.

They can also be made more useful with addon attachments, such as extra slides, rock walls and different swing variations.

Safety Play sets are designed for children, so all of them should be safe, right?

Not exactly.

Some manufacturers cut corners or create somewhat questionable designs. Look for recessed hardware and bolts so that clothing doesn’t snag on pieces that stick out.

Choose play sets that have handles for extra stability while children are climbing. Avoid ones with metal hardware that can rust and weaken over time. Wood-to-wood attachments won’t rust and will be more durable.

When choosing wood sets, be sure to select hardwoods that will not soften and warp. In addition, choose designs that feature rounded edges so there will be less chance for splinters or injuries from hitting blunt edges.

more easily with a backyard play set, and knowing they are having fun close by alleviates worries.

The decision to purchase a play set is one pondered by parents all across the country. There are scores of ready-made varieties available or sets that can be custom designed. The choice of which one to buy should be based on a number of factors, both in desired features and also models that offer safety.

Materials The first decision parents face is which material to use for the play set. The main materials

Strobe lights pulsed frantically. Alarms blared.

In response, “armed” law enforcement officers in protective gear raced through the school corridors, swift but cautious, as they entered doorways, checked bathrooms, classrooms, and mounted staircases in pursuit of intruders. “Bystanders” were commanded to stay low to the ground. “Shots” were fired; cries for help were heard, making the scene even more frightening.

Fortunately, this was only a drill.

The Suffolk County Police Department, in cooperation with Sayville School District Administrators and Security Personnel, recently conducted an “Intruder Alert Drill” on Saturday, March 29th, at the Sayville High School as training to establish proper practices in the unlikely event of an emergency or crisis. Drills, such as the one in Sayville, have been part of an ongoing series of training sessions started well before the Sandy Hook tragedy in December 2012, but under direction of the Fifth Precinct Commanding Officer Inspector Aristides Mojica, the push to provide regular practices for first responders has been imperative.

That Saturday morning in Sayville, in addition to the 109 SCPD law enforcement officers who participated, 24 non law enforcement individuals, comprised of Sayville Security personnel and Sayville School District Administrators, went through the course. The school building drill, spearheaded by School Resource Officers John Scanga and Kim Kall, and conducted by 5th

Precinct Captain Gerard Hardy, Commanding Officer of Emergency Services Lt. Kevin Burke, and P.O. Frank Faivre, demonstrated to new recruits and seasoned officers alike, the best protocols as first responders. They were being trained to distinguish, in split seconds, who might be actual threats and who were possibly off-duty

law enforcement personnel, innocent bystanders, and other nonthreatening individuals - all with the goal of neutralizing active shooters.

well-marked and cleared to go. The youth group, Police Explorers, earned community service as bystanders lying in the halls. Along with the SCPD personnel, Sayville Administrators participated or observed, including School Superintendent Dr. Walter Schartner, Assistant Superintendents Dr. John Stimmel and John Belmonte, Principals Ron Hoffer, Tom Murray, and Rose Castello, as well as Assistant Principal Michael Baio, along with Buildings and Grounds Superintendent Steve Koepper and High School Supervisor Rob Selkirk.

In addition, Town of Islip Councilman Steve Flotteron, Suffolk County News reporter Rick Chalifoux, and Sayville Public Relations Specialist Linda Mittiga were invited to attend, and while keeping the requisite safe-distance like the other drill observers, followed a fast-acting SCPD drill team run the impressive and exciting course.

Benefits Of Riding Mowers Homeowners love extensive, lush, green lawns. But the elbow grease that goes into tending to the landscape is far less beloved. One task that routinely causes bouts of procrastination is mowing the lawn. But riding mowers can change the way homeowners view mowing the lawn.

Traditionally, mowing the lawn has been a

task largely handled by homeowners pushing walk-behind mowers.

Whether these mowers were powered by gasoline, electricity or simply human power, they were the type of mower that was generally the most popular and most affordable.

There were also mowers that could bag or mulch.

Integrating both landscape architecture and spatial planning with environmental science, ecoscaping is meant to help homeowners create a sustainable and ecofriendly landscape design.

It’s natural to assume that ecoscaping includes looking for ways to reduce reliance on chemical pesticides, but there are many additional ways homeowners can embrace ecoscaping. This includes

removing or refusing to plant invasive plants that are difficult to control because they are from different ecosystems and can threaten local wildlife and existing plants. Instead of choosing exotic plants that aren’t native to the area, choose native plants that are accustomed to the local climate.

There are thousands of species of ants all over the world. Ants live in many different climates but are notably active and most abundant in warm temperatures.

Thanks to a $500,000 donation from the Stony Brook Foundation, Stony Brook University, a flagship campus of the State University of New York system, has established the Discovery Fund, a new initiative to support the University’s vital discovery-driven research through philanthropy. The Discovery Fund will attract private philanthropic dollars that will continue to advance basic science research and discovery at Stony Brook University, a counter to the years of funding cuts to scientific research at the Federal level.

As the school year comes to a close, many of Long Island’s high school students are looking forward to a funfilled summer. For some, however, now begins the monotonous task of finding a summer job.

Even though the school year is over, teens often find themselves hunting for employment for several reasons. For some, extra income is a driving factor. For others, they just want to make their parents proud.

Five summers ago, when I applied for my first job, it was out of sheer boredom! I really didn’t need the money. Making my parents proud was a

nice bonus. Several years later, I still work there.

In fact, now my brother works there too.

As I am heading off to college, I’m not interested in working many hours. I would much rather spend time with family than pick up a shift. There will be plenty of time to work, but only a few months to spend living at home.

Sometimes, work is overwhelming; it is rarely fun. Nonetheless, it is a responsibility that I have undertaken.

Working teaches invaluable life lessons that will prepare me for what is to come. In addition, my job has

afforded me the ability to socialize in a new environment. I have made new friends, and the bond between my brother and I has been strengthened.

Without a doubt, working has been the most beneficial aspect of my young life. I have never felt more accepted within a group in my entire life. Even though some of my coworkers are old enough to be my parents, we act like a normal bunch of high school friends.

As we close out this school year, I am looking forward to a memorable summer. Hopefully, you are too!

Dill, Director of the Laufer Center for Physical and Quantitative Biology and Professor of Physics and Chemistry at Stony Brook University was interviewed by Biophysics Society TV during which he used the example of the iPhone to explain how

basic science research pays off for the public and for the economy.

“Industrial technology development was very important in going from the iPhone 1 to the iPhone 5, but without basic science discoveries, i.e., the basic computer, solid state electronics, GPS, wireless technology and the internet – all of which were funded with public

money – the iPhone would not have been invented at all,” said Dill.

“It took 60 years from the basic science to the payoff for smartphones which is now a $150 billion industry. So thanks to federal funding support of basic science, our parents and grandparents made it possible for us to have the iPhone today.”

Putting this into the

context of diminishing support for basic science research by the Federal Government, Dill continued: “During the 1960s the federal government invested 1.7 percent of the country’s GDP into research and development versus 0.7 percent today.

Unfortunately, over the past thirty to fifty years we have not been investing

Twenty-eight students from the Nassau BOCES Joseph M. Barry Career and Technical Education Center (Barry Tech) took top honors at the New York State Regional SkillsUSA Conference this year. The Sunrise Fund at Stony Brook hosted their fifth “Little Miracles” Fashion show and dinner at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook, on Wednesday, March 26th. The fairytale themed night was dedicated to the true stars of the evening, the children and young adults who have completed treatment or are presently undergoing their last months of cancer treatment.

Children took to the runway in front of 830 guests. They were paired up with community members like Miss Teen Long Island, Kimbo the Clown, Stony Brook University’s Mascot Wolfie, Cops Who Care from the Suffolk County Police Department/6th Precinct,

Fashion Show has been exhilarating for these children and teens”, says Jeanne Greenfield, Pediatric Oncology Nurse Practitioner, Stony Brook Medicine, who organized and led the event, “In the midst of their illness, the event has served to promote self-esteem for these children as they are applauded for their bravery when they grace the runway. It is a true celebration of survivorship for the staff, patients, families and community members.”

The $88,000 raised by the event is designated for the expansion of Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and will be doubled to $176,000 thanks to a dollar for dollar matching gift from an anonymous Children’s Hospital donor.

“This evening was a huge magical success, not only was it a celebration of life, but a celebration for the future of Stony Brook Children’s,” said Greenfield.
