Using his head to raise money for cancer research, Sixth-grade Sayville Middle School student Kenny Corrao encouraged his friends to make a small sacrifice for kids with cancer. Recently at the Bluestone Tavern in West Sayville, he and twentytwo others participated in a St. Baldrick’s fundraiser by having their heads shaved.

From their website: “St. Baldrick’s head-shaving events began as a challenge between businessmen and have grown over the years, raising critical funds for childhood cancer research.

Events take place in pubs, restaurants, schools, churches, parks, malls, military bases, firehouses and any other place you can imagine…. St. Baldrick’s is committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long, healthy lives.”

Save the Date

As part of their informational writing unit, first-grade students in Jennifer Corso’s class at Academy Street Elementary School penned original non-fiction books.

The budding young writers used their

experiences to write books on a subject they were knowledgeable about.

From texts about sharks and dolphins to ones focused on activities they enjoy outside of school, each book included a table of contents page

as well as accompanying illustrations.

To celebrate the twomonth study, the students shared their completed pieces with Academy fourth-graders and members of the district’s administration.

Celebrating Learning Upon completing the schoolwide unit “How We Express Ourselves,” Woodhull Elementary School students, staff and parents participated in an educational fair designed to showcase lessons learned throughout the study.

During the event, the gymnasium was transformed into a fairground, decorated with student work and featuring the Woodhull scholars

draped in costumes relating to particular projects or performances.

To visually and theatrically display the lessons learned, students took to the stage to perform the stories of John Henry, Medusa, The Little Red Hen and Julius Caesar. Adding to these were informative stations displaying holiday books and science projects completed by students.

The program concluded with a series of sporting

events. To the sound of Leo Arnaud’s “Bugler’s Dream” performed by school band musicians, students carried an artificial torch around the gym to symbolize the Olympic Games. They then competed in several races and contests of might, including several “chariot races” where they transported groups of individuals across the gym and back.

Community Service Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School senior Robert Subtirelu, 17, was recently announced as the winner of the 2016 Prudential Spirit of the Community Award.

Subtirelu received the award in recognition of

his exemplary volunteer service to residents of San Marcos, Guatemala.

Subtirelu also received the President’s Volunteer Service Award on behalf of United States President Barack Obama.

Both awards are presented annually to

the top 10 percent of all Prudential Spirit Award applicants in each state and the District of Columbia by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Young Authors Blue Point Elementary School students regularly demonstrate their creativity through school projects and writing assignments and embraced their talents by penning original stories.

These stories were submitted to Child’s Play, a touring theater company that visits

schools throughout the United States, and the talented professionals chose three studentcomposed plays out of the many submissions to act out. The plays were preformed before a fullschool assembly in March.

This year’s winners included Mrs. Mills’ second-grade class for “The

Bouncy School,” fourthgrader Kendal Wooley for “The Parrot’s Story,” and fourth-graders Cole Gibson and Emma Novak for “Dream Kittens.” In addition to the school winners, several students were named honorable mentions in the call for playwrights.

Rainforest Study Blue Point Elementary School fifth-graders recently participated in a virtual learning experience with a rainforest scientist they have been studying – Meg Lowman – through the use of videoconference technology.

As part of their studies, Stacey Loeffler’s and Lori Mandell’s classes read “The Most Beautiful Roof

in the World” by Kathryn Lasky. This informational text describes the work of scientists documenting the biodiversity of rainforests, specifically a case study of Meg Lowman, a researcher of rainforest canopies.

As a follow up to the English language arts study, the students joined a national video chat with Ms. Lowman, who is also

known as “Canopy Meg.” During the chat, she shared background information about herself, including how she became fascinated with studying what is happening at the tops of trees in the rainforest and her experience on the treetop walkways, as well as answered students’ questions.

Academy Elementary School fourth-grade students in Carrie Almskog’s class collaborated with kindergarten students in Nancy Celentano’s class on a joint literacy project that culminated

in a performance of “The Wizard of Oz.” As part of the unit, the students studied the famous story by comparing and contrasting the film and novel versions. They then practiced reading with fluency and expression as

At the end of the multiweek study, the two classes performed the play before audiences filled with proud family members and peers.

Sharp Shooters Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School students recently participated in the Town of Islip’s 2016 Just Say No Sharpshooter competition.

Players were given one minute to make as many baskets as possible from

several spots on the floor.

Edward J. Bosti Elementary School teacher Ms. Tara West proudly announced the winners as Dylann Grable and Sheeraz Hussein (4th grade); and Jillian Lopez and Bobby Elliott (5th grade). Sheeraz Hussein earned a 4th place

finish while 5th grader Bobby Elliott finished in 6th place overall.

This year over 8,000 students representing school districts throughout the Town of Islip took part in the competition.

HIGHEST HONOR - Matthew Sharrock of Islip Terrace recently attained the rank of Eagle, boy scouting’s highest honor. For his Eagle Project, Matthew spearheaded a construction project to build roofs on the Junior/Senior dugouts at the Central Islip Little League Fields on Eastview Drive. The project was completed in cooperation with his fellow members from Troop #327 of Islip Terrace and Scoutmaster David Maziarz.

100 Days Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, Cherokee, Helen B. Duffield Elementary School, Idle Hour Elementary School, John Pearl Elementary School, Edith Slocum Elementary School and Sycamore Avenue Elementary School recently celebrated the 100th day of the school year by taking part in a variety of clever, creative, activities using the number 100.

Some students dressed up as 100 year old citizens, and took part in a parade on the first and second

floor of the school, while upper classmen cheered as they paraded by. Sycamore Avenue Elementary School math teacher Mrs. McInerney displayed a winding path of 100 minions and challenged all the students in the school to guess how long the path is in feet and inches. Students also made necklaces using 100 colored beads, or 100 pieces of cereal. Some students used 100 colorful plastic cups to build a pyramid, while another group created patterns using 100 squares. Using colorful balloons, students

took part in a relay race that ended when they sat on, and popped, each of those 100 balloons!

Another group of students had the chance to demonstrate that they were ‘100 days smarter’ by listing how much they had learned, and how much more mature they had become, having completed more than the first half of the school year!

Celebrating the 100th Day of School theme helped students improve their math skills and sharpened students’ observation skills.

Whether embarking on a new career, dealing with a challenging job market or exploring new possibilities, the Connetquot Public Library is here to help. Unsure of where to begin your journey, perhaps a visit to a seasoned career counselor is the first step.

With the help of a career counselor, one can develop a strategic job plan. Assistance with cover letters, resume preparation, interview readiness, skill assessment and identifying prospective employment opportunities are an integral part of the process.

District cardholders may call the library for an appointment.

The library also houses a vast assortment of materials to assist in a job search. For a career path requiring an examination, the library offers a comprehensive collection of testing books including civil service, New York State and Suffolk County. There are also books on resumes, cover letters, occupational directories and briefs.

Newspapers and career related magazines provide valuable information on job trends as well as job openings.

Educational and additional instruction can play an integral part in career preparation.

The program gives patrons have access to over 50 languages.

Beginning or advanced users can utilize the Popular Software Skills Center which employs interactive lessons to aid in software training and applications. Also under this section, Live Study Help offers the Adult Learning Center.

The center provides access to live professional assistance with resume and cover letter preparation and Microsoft Office applications.

Through the years, the young will grow, the words will expand and the ideas will multiply and flourish, the library is there. As each of us steps out into the world, we take our knowledge, ideas and skill to make a difference.

Board Recognition Connetquot Central School District’s Board of Education Superintendent Lynda G. Adams and President Milynn Augulis recently recognized a number of talented students and teachers for their outstanding achievement.

During the award ceremony, Mrs. Adams also introduced the newest member of the Board of Education, Robert Grable. Mr. Grable will be replacing former trustee Ted Imbasciani and took

the Oath of Faithful Performance to complete Mr. Imbasciani’s term as Connetquot School District Trustee.

Swim coach Alex Scichilone was among the award recipients for leading the Connetquot’s swim team to win this year’s league championship, which earned him the Outstanding Sportsmanship Award from the Long Island Official’s Association. The Connetquot swim team honorees also included:

Enlightening Minds

Since February was Dental Health month, all three Kindergarten classes along with the PALS students at Lincoln Avenue elementary school in Sayville were treated to a very special visit from local dentist Walter W. Rostkowski, DDS, who shared his love for dentistry.

Learning how to take care of their teeth with good oral hygiene was the aim of this session, but it was so much more fun having Dr. Rostkowski and his assistant Nurse Debbie show them. Using a large tooth model and tooth brush, Dr. R discussed gums and molars and demonstrated the best way to brush properly. Connetquot School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School students recently participated in the Town of Islip’s 2016 ‘Just Say No’ Sharpshooter competition.

This year over 8,000 student took part in the competition.

Schools from all over the Town of Islip conducted their own competitions

where they invited 4th and 5th grade students to participate. After these competitions took place the winners moved on to the town-wide classic.

Samantha Collazo and Peter Pinero from Cherokee Street Elementary School represented the 4th graders, while Olivia Brown and Jonathan Biangazzo represented Cherokee

Street Elementary School 5th graders.

During the final round of the Islip Town Sharpshooter Contest students were given one minute to make as many baskets as possible from several spots on the floor.

Olivia Brown and Jonathan Biangazzo placed third in the Islip Town-wide competition.

Dancing Classroom Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School 4th grade students recently showcased their ballroom dancing skills practiced during Physical Education classes for the past month.

For the second year, The “Dancing Classroom” program catered to

students, teachers, family and friends at the OakdaleBohemia Middle School.

Students demonstrated their talents in dances including the Merengue, Fox Trot, Rumba, Swing, Tango and Viennese Waltz.

Dancing Classrooms is a non-profit organization founded in 1994. Its

It was an enriching educational process. Not only did the Fourthgraders learn how to use the Google extensions and research tools, but they especially learned how to use the chat tool which was essential for collaboration.

“This project was a wonderful learning experience for our students,” Mrs. Barbara Apuzzo agreed. “They were engaged in research, technology, history, and oral presentation.

The most impressive was their interpretations of the historic figures they represented in our wax museum.”

When they had finished their projects, the students “tested” their Google slides presentations on Coordinator of Instructional Technology Mrs. Barbara Hall and Teacher Integration Specialist for Model Schools Frank Franseze who approved their efforts.

At last the students were ready to make their big reveal for their parents.

“On Go-To-School Night the students were dressed up as their person of interest. They had memorized their facts, set up the posters they created, and produced a wonderful wax museum for their parents,” said Mrs. Donnelly.

“They were in froze pose,” Mrs. Norman recalled with amusement, “and when someone pushed the button on their desk, they came alive and spoke about their major accomplishments.”

By the end of the evening it was hard to say who was having the most fun, the parents who were highly entertained by the students’ biographies or the students who enjoyed being authorities about important personages.

“Everyone enjoyed the night, and I couldn’t have been prouder of the students’ hard work and enthusiasm,” remarked Mrs. Apuzzo, while Mrs. Gina Romano summed up the activity: “The children worked so hard transforming the classroom and themselves for this special event!

Everyone was proud of their success!”

Research Support James Wilson Young Middle School helped to spread awareness of childhood cancers and raise funds for research during the school’s annual St. Baldrick’s event this

For Go-To-School Night at Sunrise Drive, the four Fourth-grade classes prepared a very special demonstration.

“The biggest hit ever for parents and kids alike!” exclaimed Mrs. Bridget Norman. The Sayville elementary students in Mrs. Apuzzo’s, Mrs. Donnelly’s, Mrs. Norman’s, and Mrs. Romano’s classes were costumed as historic or contemporary personalities and posed like wax statues as figures in a Living Wax Museum.

This remarkable demonstration was the result of a monthlong preparation that combined the class unit on biographies with a technology project using Google Slides.

“Each student was assigned a century and a person within that century to research,” Mrs. Norman explained.

They could choose to research historical figures, pioneers, athletes, inventors, musicians, etc.

“Someone who made a difference in the world,” Mrs. Sharon Donnelly clarified. “We divided the class into the eighteenth, nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries and gave each child a person to research from that century.
