The Charity of The Month for March is: United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island www.ucp-li.org United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island is a non-profit organization with the mission to advance the independence, productivity and full citizenship of people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. They have actively been serving those in need on Long Island for over 70 years!

every dollar they receive goes back into their programs and services.

This organization, despite their name, helps individuals with a wide range of disabilities. In fact, over 65 percent of those they serve today do not have cerebral palsy.

They are equipped to serve those with Down Syndrome, Learning Disabilities, Mental Health Disorders, Autism, Epilepsy, Spina Bifida, Traumatic Brain Injury, Sensory Impairments, Chronic Physical/ Medical Conditions and Tourette Syndrome, among others.

Wizards Player Motivates South Country Students and engaging way. His visit was sponsored through a South Country Education Foundation grant written by kindergarten teacher Megan Huber, first grade teacher Tracy Behl and special education teachers Ashley Sagistano and Melissa Satterley.

Not only did The Artist perform some of the team’s hottest tricks but chose students and teachers to assist in some special court moves. The object of the assembly, however, was to discuss bullying with the students and to promote more acceptance of others.

He also harped on his own motto about perseverance, “Stay positive through the darkest of times.”

Real Data Sheds Light On Unique Learning Experience The use of real data provided a valuable learning opportunity for sophomore and junior Algebra II students at Sachem High School North during a mortgage consultation event that served as the culmination of a project-based learning lesson.

Students in Wendy Parente’s, Christopher Russo’s and Richard Schaentzler’s Algebra II classes recently hosted a mortgage consultation event where over 200

students worked with real data to calculate mortgage information for their clients. Family, administrators and staff served as clients and provided practice data for the project. Prior to their consultations with clients, students attended an informational seminar with mortgage expert Tom Sullivan from Evolve Bank & Trust in which they further explored the complex calculations.

During the project, students reviewed the

current mortgage status of the clients and evaluated it to determine whether refinancing was or was not a beneficial option.

At the conclusion of the project, students met with their clients and shared the information they had found.

The authentic learning experience served as a hands-on practical application of curriculum concepts and empowered students with knowledge to make responsible financial decisions in the future.

Sachem Student Presents Research At National Summit Sachem High School East science research sophomore Asweel Mehaboob has been selected to present his research at the American Medical Informatics Association’s 2020 Informatics Summit on March 24 in Houston.

Asweel’s research was selected from approximately 500 submissions spanning content areas including translational bioinformatics,

clinical research informatics, implementation informatics and data science. As part of his expansive research, Asweel has worked with a team of college students at Stony Brook University over five weeks to develop and created an application for people with neurodegenerative diseases that improves touch accuracy on touchscreen devices. Reptilian Fun Students in Connetquot Central School District’s English as a New Language department and their families recently enjoyed a night of reptilian fun. During its biannual ENL Family Night, the department welcomed animal science and wildlife education professional “Erik the

Reptile Guy,” who introduced the students and their families to his reptile counterparts and taught them about the unique qualities of each one. The students even had the opportunity to touch and hold some of them, including snakes, turtles and lizards.

In addition to Erik’s

presentation, the group also engaged in reptilethemed crafts and were served a pizza dinner.
