Moriches Field Brewing Company received $18,750 to revitalize an empty downtown space.
(Cheers to that.)
Revitalization grants are just one of the ways we help businesses on Long Island and in the Rockaways. For Moriches Field Brewing Company, a grant from our economic development program was a perfect fit to help them renovate a previously vacant property. A discount through our Vacant Space Revival Program saved them more than $4,000 on their electric bills, and rebates for upgrading to LED lighting are keeping them saving month after month.
Helping revitalize our Island, one business at a time, is something we’re proud to be part of and something definitely worth celebrating.

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, has kicked off its virtual fundraising hay drive. The threemonth campaign is intended to help Pal-OMine raise funds to pay for the hay needed to feed its herd and help offset the rising costs of hay.
To grow hay, hundred of acres of land is required in addition to extensive physical labor and expensive equipment to deliver hay from the farmer to PalO-Mine’s herd. Here are some details associated with the cost factors:
-One bale of hay weighs 50-70 lbs.
-One bale of excellent quality hay costs approximately $14; an increase of 40% from last year.
-Pal-O-Mines herd eats 18 bales (1,000 lbs.) of hay daily
-Pal-O-Mine receives a delivery of 810 bales of hay every six weeks at a
cost of $6,600 at a cost of approximately $57,200 annually.
Through the virtual fundraising hay drive, Pal-O-Mine’s goal is to raise $12,000.

Sachem BOE Establishes Harrison Frisenda Memorial Scholarship
The Sachem Board of Education established the creation of the Harrison Frisenda Memorial Scholarship at its Feb. 8 meeting. Harrison Frisenda started at Waverly Elementary School as a kindergartener in 2019. He passed away in 2021
and left a lasting impact on the Waverly and Sachem community.
“Those who worked closely with Harrison described him as a student with a kind personality, a caring personality and a wonderful smile that lit up a room,” Waverly Principal
Kevin Tougher said.
In addition to memorials at Waverly Elementary School, the scholarship honors Harrison’s legacy and will support current and future Sachem students.

Highlighting Local Businesses
By Natalie Almeida
The man behind this business is owner, Mike Cutino. He is the Publisher/CEO of Nightlife Magazine and NY Sports Scene, an alumnus of the State University of New York at Farmingdale, where he’s currently an active member of the Board of Directors and he was also a First Responder during 9/11 with the Nesconset Fire Department. His business venture with Big Italy Pizzeria began four years ago as an investment and it has blossomed, heading in the right direction ever since.
They have been reviewed by seven of the best food critics in New York, getting notoriety in publications such as Nightlife Magazine, NY Sports Scene, Practical Gourmet Magazine, Dan’s Papers, Times Magazine and Long Island Press. Big Italy Pizzeria is a member of the Medford Chamber of Commerce and proudly sponsors different events within the community. They donate to Shriners Hospitals for Children, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Stony Brook Hospital and local fire departments. They also offer giveaways through a couple of different radio stations, one of them being 98.1 WKZE Radio.
From the moment you enter Big Italy Pizzeria, you immediately take note that the establishment is just as inviting as it is cozy. You will find vintage toys and antiques displayed that have been passed down from generations, as well as punny vintage signs and shots taken of years past. There are also personal photos scattered on the walls of different celebrities that Mike has gotten to know personally over the years through his publications.
This pizzeria is one that definitely stands out against the crowds. Although the month of love has passed, they’re still continuing their heart shaped pizzas all year long for you and that special someone to enjoy! Their slices alone are huge; one slice is equivalent to two anywhere else and the cooks are all from Italy themselves. One popular menu item is their Grandma Pie, and it’s safe to say they have
mastered it with an Italian sauce recipe that’s nearly 200 years old from Palermo, Sicily!
Aside from the pleasant aesthetic and delicious pizzas, one of the things that Big Italy Pizzeria emphasizes is allowing their customers to feel at home. Manager, Dale Vigorito is nothing short of attentive, keeping the business flowing through all of the day-to-day operations. With customers coming and going all day long, it is a priority to make sure each customer is treated like family and welcomed with open arms. The same is true when it
comes to the employees as well. Mike Cutino said, “It’s not about me, it’s about the people who work here who make it all come together. My employees are important to me.” He makes it a point to treat all of his employees with respect and generosity, acknowledging that it is ultimately them that allow the business to succeed.
Big Italy Pizzeria offers indoor and outdoor seating options. They are open Monday through Sunday from 11AM to 9PM. For more information visit their website or stop on by!

Local Small Business Owner Opens A Refuge For Veterans
Scanlon’s Traveling Salon, a local small business serves vulnerable communities, such as seniors and homeless individuals across Long Island. Owner Eileen Scanlon has a heart for helping others and is actively involved in doing so. When she became aware of the fast growing rate of displaced/homeless veterans, she decided to embark on an effort to create an “intentional home share” for these individuals.
“In New York, rents and home prices are skyrocketing, which is forcing many to leave the state,” said Scanlon. “Even for those who stay here, owning a home is becoming quite unattainable. I wanted to embark on a mission that allowed me to offer a home for veterans in need, where they can live under one roof. They would share expenses and all upkeep the residence, allowing for camaraderie to blossom, but we would keep prices low.”
With a head full of dreams and a heart full of passion, Eileen purchased Ruby’s Whisper, an old 1700’s Tavern turned home in Hyde Park, NY, which she is now converting to a home share
for four to five low income veterans. The property is just a stones throw away from Marist College and the Vanderbilt/Roosevelt Estates, with public transportation nearby.
“The home will offer comfort, solace, space and a feeling of yesteryear,” said Eileen. “There are five lovely sized bedrooms, a spacious living room and cozy kitchen. The home will be furnished with the help of selfless individuals/ organizations that kindly donated items. The backyard offers veterans the ability to grow their own food and the veterans that stay with us can also utilize two large sheds for storage and there are two separate driveways in which will accommodate four vehicles. A family style home share like this for vets might mean the difference between paying rent and being able to pay their monthly food bill; a home share allows them to keep their monthly expenses much lower compared to if they were renting a place on their own.”
The home is undergoing renovations that will hopefully be finalized by the end of this summer. “I have titled this whole project
Heye’s Haven for Heroes, and I’m looking to have it fully incorporated as a 501C3 Non-Profit Organization as soon as possible. I’m so grateful to have this opportunity at this stage in my life, where I can pay forward in a way that I feel would make my father and grandfather, both veterans, rather proud.”
A GoFundMe Page has been created, where donations are being accepted to help assist with the price of renovations. Goosechase Digital Scavenger Hunt
Cherokee Street Elementary School third grade students participated in a digital scavenger hunt, called a Goosechase, to strengthen their technology skills using the iPad and Goosechase application.
Organized by Valerie O’Connell, Susan Meade and Karen Giugliano, students were instructed to access and complete missions through the
Goosechase application, including finishing lyrics with Principal Jill Lahey, participating in a play on word puzzles with Assistant Principal Thomas Sheehan, working with winter idioms with teachers Cindy Campenella and Tara Dunkin and a snowball toss with Danielle Giove. The scavenger hunt activity ended with the students finding Santa and his helper with teachers
Kevin Keane and Christine Chanowsky. Each of the missions were completed by submitting text-based, photo or video-based responses through the iPad application. Not only did the students have fun completing missions, they honed their technology skills in using a new application and through use of the iPad.
Students Gather Valuable Materials For Research Topics
Bayport-Blue Point High School Advance Placement Seminar students enrolled in the district’s AP Capstone Program recently visited Stony Brook University to gather valuable materials for their research topics. During finals, SBU allowed the students to access their computer labs and databases to collect valuable information on topics, which included
access to mental health, global warming, fracking, human trafficking, medical animal testing and more.
The students are now prepared for the first component of the AP Seminar College Board Exam, the research paper and group presentation. The students first choose a vital topic significant to themselves and society and will later argue for
a solution to the team’s research topic. The SBU databases enhance the students’ available resources.
The AP Seminar students also visited the Staller Center and the Stony Brook University art installation “Revisiting 5 + 1,” held at the Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery and received an informal lecture from one of the curators.

Student’s Flag To Fly With Pole To Pole Electric Vehicle Expedition
Edward J. Bosti Elementary School student Grace Cortright was announced the worldwide flag design contest winner for the upcoming Pole to Pole electric vehicle exhibition. News-O-Matic digital platform host Russell Kahn, who will be covering and writing about the expedition, sponsored the flag design contest and was on hand on Feb. 10 to announce Grace as the winner. The students regularly watch News-O-Matic in their classroom and were exited and thrilled to meet Mr. Kahn. The flag designs of students Anastasia Schretzmayer and Gracyn Ebner will also accompany the expedition in poster form.
This spring, global electric vehicle adventurers Chris Ramsey and Julie Ramsey will drive an electric vehicle from the North Pole to the South Pole through the Americas. The 10-month excursion will occur over a distance of 17,000 miles to bring awareness of the capability and power of electric vehicles. A video message from the Ramseys was shown to students at an assembly where Grace’s flag was unveiled.
During their video message, the Ramseys said Grace’s design captured the essence of what the Pole to Pole exhibition is about. “It reminded us that there is hope and there’s inspiration in this world,” the Ramseys said. “There are true solutions out there to tackle the climate change situation we have. All we need is to do our bit to protect this fragile planet.”
