Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter addressed local officials and members of the public today during the annual State of the Town address. Supervisor Carpenter used the speech, “Building a better Islip…for all,” to review progress that the Town has made in multiple areas of governance, while also laying-out a vision for the future of Islip Town. The supervisor stressed the importance of teamwork and inclusiveness, and a willingness to embrace challenges that will ultimately lead to prosperity for Islip residents.

“I invite all in the Islip community, our residents, businesses, community and civic leaders, to become active participants in planning and shaping the future of our town, as we work together to build a better, more efficient and effective government for all the people living

and working in the Town of Islip,” said Supervisor Carpenter.

Supervisor Carpenter touted the Town’s strong financial position, noting the Aaa rating from Moody’s, and stressed that now is the time to invest in critical infrastructure improvements in the Town.

Such projects would help residents and businesses alike, and save taxpayer

dollars in the long-term.

These improvements will also create economic opportunities for local businesses and provide additional streams of revenue for the Town.

Atop the list of improvements to Town facilities is the revitalization of Roberto Clemente Park in Brentwood.

Supervisor Carpenter’s administration

has overseen the removal of all contaminated material, and has started restoring the park so that it may once again be the cornerstone of the Brentwood community. The Town, with the assistance of a $2 million grant secured

by NYS Assemblyman Phil Ramos, plans to enhance the features of the park

While committed to improving our parks, Supervisor Carpenter’s administration has also been alleviating troubling developments in residential neighborhoods.

The Town’s Division of Code Enforcement has overseen the demolition of many blighted properties that not only de-value surrounding properties, but pose a direct threat to public safety. The Town plans to increase enforcement procedures against these derelict parcels, all at the expense of the neglectful property owners.

The final portion of the speech focused on harnessing the Town’s existing resources to create economic opportunity for Islip residents. To that end, Supervisor Carpenter’s administration will continue to promote and support Islip MacArthur Airport, which recently received the news that the Governor was putting $20 million in the budget to address connectivity between the LIRR and the airport terminal.

Supervisor Carpenter also highlighted the work of the Islip Industrial Development Agency, which has enabled companies to retain and create close to 5,000 thousand jobs locally. The number of active projects handled at Islip’s IDA over the past two years has surpassed any previous two-year period in its 42year history.

“We remain steadfast in our belief that Islip Town is one of the best places in the state to live, work, and raise a family,” said Supervisor Carpenter. “I promise our residents that with every hour, we will work to make Town government more

Thanks to the efforts of Connetquot High School Italian teacher Giuseppina Santi, the entire sophomore class learned about the Italian citizens’ involvement in saving the lives of 80 percent of the Jewish residents living in Italy under Benito Mussolini’s fascist regime during World War II. To begin the program, the students viewed the documentary “My Italian

Secret: The Forgotten Heroes,” a film that shares the stories of those who lived during that time period. To enhance their understanding of the film, the students spoke candidly with Vincent Marmorale, a retired social studies teacher of 33 years and a producer on the film. They also heard from Barbara Bernard, a veteran teacher and an associate of Mr. Marmorale, who is devoted

Forgotten Heroes to Holocaust education.

Both individuals spoke about their experiences in the production of the film and the people they met along the way.

The Connetquot High School Foreign Language Honor Society recognized the importance of keeping such stories alive by making a generous donation to Mr. Marmorale’s organization, Italians and the Holocaust Foundation.

GUEST READER - Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay attended Grundy Avenue Elementary School’s Readers are Leaders Day where he read Woodrow the White House Mouse to Mrs. Armstrong’s fifth grade class this past Thursday. Lindsay also spoke to the class about the many functions of government, specifics about his role as a Legislator and how his education has enabled him to get to where he is.

The CTA President went on to say that “… whatever and whenever the Cohalan Center is in need, you have our number. Give us a call and we will do what we can to make it happen.” Felicio also thanked the CTA board members who were able to attend the dinner, as well as the entire membership for its contributions for the youngsters at the Children’s Center.

The Cohalan Children’s Center provides a safe environment for youngsters while their families are involved

in court proceedings.

For the past 10 years, Connetquot teachers have supplied children’s books, clothing, toys, healthy snacks, bottled water and fruit juices, tissues and paper towels to be used by the youngsters at the Children’s Center. When the youngsters leave the Children’s Center they take with them coats, hats gloves and books to share at home with their siblings.

The Children’s Center is open five days per week, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Last year the center serviced over 1500 children. State Senator John J. Flanagan recently arranged for the center to receive a NYState financial grant to extend the current hours.

PET FOOD DRIVE - Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco and Long Island Cares, Inc. completed a one month long Pet Food drive on Friday, March 3rd. The drive will help support families who have difficulty feeding their pets and allow the pets to stay in loving homes rather than in shelters. Legislator Calarco’s Pet Food Drive was part of Long Island Cares, Inc.’s 6th annual Legislative Pet Food Drive, a Long Island wide effort with 24 other elected officials.

On March 2nd the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) was honored at the Cohalan Cares for Kids dinner, hosted by the Suffolk County Bar Association in Hauppauge.

CTA President Anthony Felicio, Jr. and members of the association’s executive board were on hand for this special recognition. Representing the membership of the CTA Felicio accepted the award for the association’s consistent support of the Suffolk County Children’s Center at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip.

Breaking Records The Connetquot High School girls track and field team continues to break school records, both as a team and on the individual level.

The team recently competed in the League SAYVILLE SCHOLARSHIPS - Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay with Championship against Bay scholarship recipients Alexander Carrauso, Mackenzie Fabiani, Brittney Elmen, Alyssa Shore – a team that hadn’t Karl and Abigail Creglia. lost the championships in 22 years – and emerged victorious, defeating the competition by a score of 106-99. The following week, the athletes competed in the Suffolk County Championships against more than 40 schools, finishing shy of first place by only eight points.

As part of the Connetquot Central School District’s ongoing work to enhance mathematical practices, Cherokee Street Elementary School math teachers recently attended a professional development workshop with Math Instructional Developer

Diana Kolhoff.

She discussed best pedagogical practices and mathematic content knowledge.

During the meeting, the group spoke about the math standards currently implemented in their respective grade levels and devised interactive

Senior Brittany Curtain threw a school record of 38 feet, 10 inches in the Shot Put; Senior Kelly Iocca won the 3000-meter by more than three seconds at 10 minutes, 20 seconds and just missed breaking the school record she currently holds; sophomore Emma McLoughlin ran past two veteran athletes to earn a spot in the 300-meter with a time of 41.8 seconds and senior Bryana Padula qualified for the state championships in three separate events – hurdles, with a time of 8.39 seconds, the triple jump,

with a length of 37 feet, 4.5 inches, and the 300 meter, with a time of 41.15 seconds. Bryana’s hurdle race time made her the fastest public high school hurdler in the state.

Additionally, freshman Katie Iocca recently performed in the Large School County Championships and finished in second place in the 3000-meter with a time of 10 minutes and 25 seconds, making her the 10th best freshman in the country.

“These girls work very hard, and both myself and the entire team are very proud of them,” said coach Michael Austin.

‘Tis the time of year when all become Irish for a day, in the honorary sense anyway, and partake in the various St. Patrick’s Day celebrations held across Long Island and New York City.

The funny thing is – well, perhaps more ironic than outright humorous – is that when my family and I traveled to Ireland several years ago, we were somewhat surprised to learn that those native to the Emerald Isle do not commemorate the occasion in even remotely the same manner as we do. In fact, the holiday takes on a far more religious tone, filled with pilgrimages to mountaintops to honor St. Patrick himself; a far cry from the drinking and parades which wind through most main streets on this side of the pond.

Speaking of Ireland, and travel, I certainly wish to do more of it, both here and abroad. Before our family trip, I had never been on a plane in my 30 years on this earth; nor, of course, had I bothered to apply for a passport. Old-fashioned road trips across the good old U.S. of A had never held much appeal due to my, shall we say, occasional tendency toward motion sickness during any car ride surpassing two or so hours. And so, at this point, my travels have extended ever so slightly north and south of New York, about halfway down the east coast – no further. And my passport, while it proudly sports that one stamp from Ireland, has remained packed away ever since. Unacceptable, I know.

And with that, a new season is on the horizon, although whether Mother Nature will

cooperate remains to be seen.

March has always been a notoriously fickle month, what with the remnants of winter storms to contend with, spring rains hovering overhead and blossoms waiting to burst forth from the trees. It is a time of beginnings, of growth, of shaking off the chill of the last several months to head out and feel the warmth of the sun as we explore the great outdoors. No need to pack a suitcase – just hop in the car and go, in any direction, and enjoy the beauty on this long island that we call home.

So, as you head out in your green attire this week, take a deep breath of fresh air and start planning some fun activities to see you through to summer. Spring may be a gateway to the season of sun and surf and sand, but it is pretty spectacular in its own right. Enjoy it.

USGA Championship Office to Open Recently, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was joined by local officials, the United States Golf Association (USGA) and representatives from the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club to announce the opening of the USGA Championship offices in the Village of Southampton in advance of the 2018 U.S. Open. The Championship will be held at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on June 14th-17th, 2018.

Suffolk County and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club previously hosted the U.S. Open in 1896, 1986, 1995 and 2004. The USGA also recently announced that the U.S. Open will return to Shinnecock Hills in 2026.

“I applaud the USGA for having boots on the ground well in advance of the 2018 USGA

Championship,” stated County Executive Steve Bellone. “Charlie Howe, USGA Championship Director, along with other USGA officials have already engaged in planning with the Town and Village of Southampton and the Suffolk County Departments of Economic Development and Planning and Public Works. The Shinnecock Hills Golf Course is one of the best in the world and we are happy to host the U.S. Open in Suffolk County.”

Shinnecock Hills is one of the oldest formal organized golf clubs in the United States (1891) and also holds the title of the oldest golf clubhouse in the U.S. (1892). But most importantly, it was the first golf club to admit women from the day it was opened.

“The USGA is thrilled

to return to Suffolk County and the Town of Southampton for the fifth time, to celebrate the 118th U.S. Open Championship next summer,” said Charlie Howe, USGA championship director.

“The spirit of partnership and volunteerism is especially high in this community, and the entire USGA Southampton team is excited to have a home base here as we prepare to bring the ultimate test in golf to this historic venue.”

“We on the East End are looking forward to welcoming the world’s top golfers to the beautiful and historic Shinnecock Golf Club, which has hosted a US open in three different centuries, stated Legislator Bridget Fleming. “Along with County Executive Bellone, Mayor Epley, Southampton Town

officials and local leaders, my office is ready to assist to reduce any inconveniences so that the community and local businesses can fully benefit from the enormous economic opportunities and prestige associated with the U.S. Open.”
