When Life Gives You Lemons Strange as it may seem, I still hope for the best, even though the best, like an interesting piece of mail, so rarely arrives, and even when it does it can be lost so easily. ~ Lemony Snicket ~ The above is one of my favorite quotes, penned by American author Lemony Snicket, creator of the famed “Series of Unfortunate Events” books and several other works. A bit tongue in cheek, with a dash of sarcasm, his words have always resonated with me on many levels. Mostly concerning the irony of life as a whole, they offer an undeniable degree of wisdom in between the cynical undertones.

I have often been categorized as an unapologetic idealist; which is to say, optimism mixed with a touch of unrealism. Having taken to heart the expression that you can - quite literally - do anything you put your mind to, I see no valid reason why the seemingly

impossible be not, in fact, very possible with the proper balance of dedication and drive.

Of course, this concept often involves multiple parties working as one, which is generally where problems come into play.

Individually, we can each set our minds to particular goals and aspirations and see through the necessary steps to complete them. As a group, even a small one, it often requires a meeting of the minds, so to speak, a bit of give and take to find an acceptable middle ground. The problem with this is agreeing upon the “happy” medium.

As with most favorite quotations, this particular one seems to resonate year after year, albeit applied to different circumstances; but relevant, nonetheless. As much as time marches on, just as many aspects of life remain the same.

I will always feel optimism is a preferable quality to embody, farreaching as it may be. If you can’t hope for the best, then what is the

point of setting goals at all? Sure, the outcome will always be in question; but this is what makes taking calculated risks - and yes, even the occasional blind leap of faith - necessary. It may not pan out the way you desire; but, on the other end, it just might lead to something even more wonderful in the long run. Who’s to say?

If life has taught any of us a fairly universal lesson, it is that there are plenty of things beyond our control, just as many things within our grasp; and, as good or bad as a situation may seem at a particular moment, it is apt to change in the blink of an eye. This is why it’s so incredibly important to hold on to the moments of peace and prosperity, fleeting as they may be, while always driving forward to overcome the obstacles which present themselves.

If you run over a few lemons in the process; well, that’s what sometimes leads to the sweetest batches of lemonade.

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night.

Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies.

After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent notfor-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support.

Applications are now being accepted for the Sister Mary Grace Memorial Scholarship in Health Care sponsored by the Council of Leagues of Mercy Medical Center.

Sister Mary Grace was a Moderator of the Leagues of Mercy for many years and encouraged individuals to pursue service to the sick.

The scholarships in her memory, which in the past have ranged from $500 to $1,000, are awarded on a one-time basis to worthy students in financial need who are studying for a career in healthcare.

Nineteen studentvolunteers from BayportBlue Point High School recently took part in Stony Brook University’s Red Watch Band training course, a program that provides training on how to respond to alcohol-related emergencies alongside the completion of CPR/AED

training.

“This group was particularly passionate about helping those around them,” said Krista Klicpera, Bayport-Blue Point High School science teacher and Students Against Destructive Decisions adviser. “It was inspiring to see them wanting to take

action and be prepared to help if needed.”

All students involved were appreciative of the experience provided for them and were thankful to be afforded to opportunity to learn the proper techniques on how to save the lives of those in need of assistance.

Luncheon a Success A crowd of over 900 Long Islanders attended the 17th annual Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon on Wednesday, February 28th. The sea of red could be seen throughout all the rooms at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.

The Child Care Council of Suffolk (CCCS) was pleased to participate in “Governor Cuomo’s Council on Women and Girls Regional Empowerment Forum,” which was held at The Tilles Center in Brookville, New York. The Forum was designed to develop an empowerment action plan and to discuss the intersectionality of the Women’s Agenda for the Long Island Region.

Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul provided the keynote address in which she urged participants to get involved in the 2018 budget process and to support the effort to build on New York State’s proud legacy of leading the way to advance women’s rights by breaking down the barriers to equality.

Prior to midwinter recess Seneca Middle School in the Sachem Central School District transformed into a literacy pop culture convention center as established authors and illustrators came to share their specialties with students.

To begin the day, all seventh-grade students gathered in the auditorium for an assembly presentation by award-winning author Paul Volponi. During the assembly, students gained expert insight into the creative process and answered various trivia questions highlighting different aspects of world cultures.

visual arts, dance, music, film and video to celebrate the concept of unity from diversity.

An additional $5,000 was awarded to the Patchogue Arts Council to fund “2018 imPACtful Connections: Island-Wide Networking for Creatives.” The program will identify 20 - 25 visual artists living and working on Long Island giving them the opportunity to display their work in a new area in Suffolk County where their work has not been previously seen. Each artist receives five minutes to present images & discuss their work. There will then be five additional events around Suffolk County.

The Suffolk County Legislature voted to authorize IR 1118-18 which provides funding for cultural programs throughout Suffolk County at the March 6th General Meeting. Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco secured $30,000 in funding for two arts projects in Patchogue Village that will drive tourism to the area and further enhance Patchogue’s status as a cultural hub in Suffolk County. $25,000 will go to the Patchogue Arts Council for the “E Pluribus Unum” project. John Pearl Elementary School students in grades K-5 recently took part in the school’s annual science fair competition, spending weeks researching an important scientific topic and recording their findings to share with the school community.

Examples of projects submitted by the students included testing if variances in temperature affect the conductibility of magnets, acid rain and the effect on the environment, and the effect that different liquids have on the decomposition rates of the human tooth. Additionally, student representatives from Connetquot High School, along with

Science, Technology and FACS Chairperson Mary Loesing were on hand to judge the projects and determine who would be declared winners for each grade level.

Standing Up to Bullying Students of all grade levels at Bayport-Blue Point High School recently attended a highly important assembly about antibullying and mutual respect, as hosted by public speaker and Teen Truth President/CEO JC Pohl.

During his multi-layered presentation, Mr. Pohl suggested that students ask themselves what they can do on a daily basis in order to continue to cultivate a welcoming and prosperous learning environment.

He offered valuable advice on how to deal with the pressures of everyday life before conducting a visual exercise aimed at showing the students that bullying is a topic experienced by many.

In addition to being a talented public speaker, Mr. Pohl is also a gifted filmmaker, a talent he shared with the staff and students.

During the assembly, Mr. Pohl showed his short film consisting of footage shot entirely by students who decided it was time to make a change in the world. The footage showcased high school students throughout the nation who, like many students nowadays, are discouraged by bullying and disrespectful actions toward one another.

After viewing the film, the students were asked to reflect on how it made them feel as an individual and how they would become ambassadors for

change in the world.

Immediately following the assembly program, Mr. Pohl joined the Bayport-Blue Point High School Student Leaders for a summit workshop.

The program was hosted with the goal of achieving objectives such as developing a greater understanding of what it means to be a leader, and brainstorming student issues that are affecting school culture.

Mr. Pohl instilled in the students the phrase that a leader must act (A) with compassion (C) today (T), as the students confidently recited these words, which formulate Teen Truth’s mantra of A.C.T.

Celebrating Civics At the February 27th Connetquot Central School District Board of Education meeting, the Connetquot High School Civic Club showed their appreciation for district and community members who have provided opportunities to help the

club prosper.

“Both myself and my co-adviser Gina Senft pride ourselves in developing contributing members of society,” said Connetquot High School Civic Club coadviser Michelle Goodwin.

“It is my firm belief that this type of development

can only be fostered through service projects as well as character education programs.”

Representatives of the club presented the board with tokens of appreciation, including their very own Connetquot Civic T-shirts.

CULTURE OF KINDNESS - Cherokee Street Elementary School recently welcomed Girl Scout Cadet Troop 1241, who are current Ronkonkoma Middle School students and Cherokee Street alumnae, for a very special presentation. Bottles for the Brave Since September 2017, Law Enforcement students from the Academy at Milliken Technical Center collected and recycled 6,000 empty water bottles.

Proceeds from the recycled

bottles donated to the Bottles for the Brave organization cover the cost of postage for mailing packages to deployed troops.

Teacher Sandra Lochren said, “These students are definitely on a mission.

Last year they collected 4,000 bottles. It’s only February and they’ve already collected 6,000.”

In celebration of Theodor Seuss Geisel, fifth-grade students from BayportBlue Point Elementary School’s Sylvan Avenue Elementary School recently collaborated with the kindergartners for some activities paying tribute to the popular

children’s author, who is better known to most as “Dr. Seuss.”

The fifth-graders chose a book to read to their young friends in an effort to introduce them to the magical works of Dr. Seuss, including popular titles such as “Green Eggs and

Ham,” “Horton Hears a Who!” and “The Cat in the Hat.” At the conclusion of their readings, the students used their imagination during the artistic activity of creating their very own versions of green eggs and ham.

Students became better acquainted with popular tools of the trade, including shears,

multipurpose shears and texturizers, and explored the benefits of different scissor materials.

Throughout the hands-on workshop, Merritt emphasized the importance of not cutting hair on “autopilot” and actively advancing the application of their skills to become a better stylist.

Connetquot Celebrates In celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, Helen B. Duffield Elementary School recently welcomed 108 Connetquot High School students as part of the National Education Association’s Read Across America program.

The high schoolers visited each classroom, entertaining students ranging in grade level from kindergarten to fifth by

reading them Dr. Seuss’ popular works, such as “The Cat in the Hat” and “Green Eggs and Ham.” Duffield’s faculty and staff members joined in the day’s fun activities by dressing up for this very special birthday celebration. Principal Lisa Farrell was very pleased with the day’s festivities and remarked that when high school students began

celebrating with Duffield students several years ago, there were only 30 that took part. With each passing year, more and more high School students look forward to celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday with their new Duffield friends.

The NEA launched the Read Across America program in 1998 to promote the importance of reading to school children.

Getting Energized The third-grade students at Blue Point Elementary School are immersed in a new science unit focused on energy and have been spending time investigating the subject along with its many forms.

Working in small groups, the students performed

experiments designed to show that energy can change from potential to kinetic and back again. As visual demonstrations of the topic, the third-graders built their own roller coasters and measured the distance a toy car traveled after making its way down

a ramp.

They observed that an object moves slowest at the highest point, thus utilizing the least kinetic energy and most potential energy; and if a car’s stored energy increases, then the distance it travels will increase.

Visit from a Hero Connetquot Central School District’s John Pearl Elementary School recently welcomed U.S. Marine Corps Private firstclass Shaun Muller to the school as he visited with the first-grade students and celebrated the birthday of his younger sisters.

His twin sisters, Emily Muller and Payton Muller, enrolled in Kim Okula’s and Sarah Mannino’s classes, were excited to spend time with their older brother on their special

day. The first-graders took the time to sing “Happy Birthday” to the sisters as well.

Pfc. Muller was introduced by John Pearl Elementary School Principal Susan White before speaking about his experiences in boot camp, as well as his next posting. Both the students and teachers alike were impressed to hear that he could be stationed in Virginia, or even within the Hawaiian Islands.

After reading from the book “The Impossible Patriotism Project,” the students applauded the session and thanked Pfc. Muller for visiting.

“All of the students were proud to meet Shaun,” said Ms. White. “He is a real American hero.”

Following the reading presentation, Pfc. Muller was serenaded by the students to a rendition of “This Land is Your Land.”

Healthy Heart Clinic

At the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology at Milliken Technical Center, vital signs are excellent for Clinical Medical Assisting (CMA) students.

Employment opportunities for CMAs are expected to grow 29 percent between 2016 and 2026 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Each year the CMA Program holds a Healthy Heart Clinic, giving the students an opportunity to practice and hone the skills they are learning and provide staff and students in the building a chance

to have their vital signs checked. The examination includes checking Body Mass Index (BMI), height and weight, and cholesterol and glucose testing. BMI is a simple calculation using a person’s height and weight. A BMI of 25.0 or more is overweight, while the healthy range is 18.5 to 24.9.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women. If a client has an elevated blood pressure, a teacher is alerted and a suggestion is made for the client to follow up immediately with their personal physician. The

student or teacher never makes a diagnosis.

Brochures and healthy recipe cards designed by the students were distributed to educate and help attendees at the Healthy Heart Clinic make better decisions.

While enrolled at the Academy, CMA students participate in internships at Brookhaven Hospital.

After graduating, they have over 80 health profession opportunities to choose from including Practical Nursing and Registered Nurse offered by postsecondary colleges.

Birthday Fun Special Education Teacher Maryann Glass celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday and Read Across America Day (March 2nd) with her class by engaging them in several fun and educational activities.

Glass is a teacher at Brookhaven Learning Center, an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides services to students with special education needs. Students and staff dressed up as characters from The Cat in

the Hat and listened while Glass read, Green Eggs and Ham. After the story, Glass polled the class to see who thought they would enjoy the most famous breakfast items in children’s literature and who would not.

Next, students helped her to make the archetypal meal, which was accompanied by a Pink Yink Drink (mentioned in Hop on Pop and created with strawberry flavoring and milk).

Glass polled the class again after eating to determine who did and did not like green eggs and ham, and discussed why it’s important to give something a fair chance prior to making up your mind.

“This activity involved reading, following directions, and also changed the minds of a few students who are now fans of green eggs and ham,” explained Glass.
