A new round of scholarships to encourage high school students to pursue high tech careers in New York State is available. The New York State Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Incentive Program provides a full SUNY tuition scholarship to the top ten percent of students in New York high schools if they major in a STEM field and work in a STEM job in New York State for five years after graduation.

To qualify for a STEM award, a student must be attending a New York State high school and be ranked in the top ten percent of his/her graduating class and enroll in full-time study at a SUNY in the fall term following high school graduation.

Eligibility An applicant must: • be a legal resident of NYS and have resided in NYS for 12 continuous months; • be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen; • be a high school senior/recent high school graduate who will be enrolled full time at a SUNY or CUNY college, including community colleges and the statutory colleges at Cornell University and Alfred University, beginning in the fall term following his or her high school graduation; • be ranked in the top 10 percent of his/ her high school graduating class of a NYS high school; • be matriculated in an undergraduate program leading

to a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics at a SUNY or CUNY college; • earn a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher each term after the first semester; • execute a service contract agreeing to reside and work in NYS for five years in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics; • not be in default on a student loan made under any NYS or federal education loan program or repayment of any state award; and • be in compliance with the terms of any service condition imposed by a state award.

Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk is hosting the second annual Builder’s Breakfast on Thursday, April 21st, at the Stonebridge Golf and Country Club in Smithtown.

Partner families will be in attendance to inspire the audience with their challenges and success stories, and Habitat will premiere its new “Partnership” video.

Habitat Suffolk recently raised the walls of the 181st home for lowmoderate income working families on Long Island in need of quality, affordable housing and looks towards the New Year to help more families across Suffolk County – from Wyandanch to Orient Point.

The goal of the Builder’s Breakfast is to raise awareness in support of Habitat Suffolk’s affordable housing program. The Breakfast will be one of

Long Ago & Far Away By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time continues to march on, and those moments we so casually took for granted along the way become nothing more than a distant memory, relegated to the nostalgia pile, to be savored in the imagination only.

The difference, though, is that these flashbacks are increasingly from not so long ago, mere years, rather than decades… yet they seem a lifetime away, just out of reach.

It’s the little things, too, the laughs shared, the stories told, the impromptu gatherings, the gifts exchanged, the memories made. Whether with family members, friends, co-workers, even the occasional stranger, every moment is part of something

larger, a curve in the path – your path – of life. Every decision made, or not made; each chance encounter or outlined goal – all leads to the point we are currently at, for better or worse.

How amazing to be able to foresee the consequences of our actions; but then, our choices would be far simpler, wouldn’t they? Gone would be the mystery, the spontaneity, the happy accidents that tend to occur along the way when you simply close your eyes and just let life take you by the hand.

There are those who believe in destiny; and there are those who refuse to think we don’t have as much input in our affairs as any otherworldly force. Which is right? Who’s to say. The only indisputable fact is that everything does

happen for a reason. People come into our lives, or go, as the case may be; and we are better for it. Every chance meeting is a lesson in disguise, to be determined at a later date.

In the meantime, we go on, as does time. Our world grows smaller as circumstances change our daily dynamics, and we are forced to adjust, whether we care to or not.

The memories fade, and their significance wanes in the face of more urgent, pressing matters. But we should never forget… the people, the places, the roads taken – all have led to here and now.

And one day, not so very far away, this, too, will be but a snapshot in the giant album of life.

We had best preserve it from now.

Cancro also set up a whale table with a variety of objects for the students to touch. She said, “It’s very hands on and it’s a cool way to learn about whales.”

After the presentation, the students engaged in culminating activities in their classrooms such as coloring pictures of whales and other sea creatures, and reading books about marine life.

Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron and Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen recently attended the Town’s 30th Annual Sharpshooter Basketball Contest.

This annual tradition brings together children in fourth and fifth grade from across Islip Town for some friendly competition and to help promote drug and alcohol awareness. The event was made possible through the efforts of the Islip Parks and Recreation Department, Northwell Health, the Islip Elks and the Islip Housing Authority.

“Over 8,000 children participated this year in qualifying events at their schools and in the finals,” said Councilman Steve Flotteron. “For decades, the Sharpshooter Contest has been one of our proudest traditions and has helped inform our kids about the dangers of substance abuse.”

“It’s incredible to watch kids from all across our Town come together

and celebrate the antidrug message,” said Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen. “I’m sure this event will be just as successful over the next thirty years.”
