season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event.

This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole.

This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade.

Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness.

These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program.

Health & Wellness 3 Tips When Reading Nutrition Facts Labels Much about trips to the grocery store has changed since many adults were children. Many grocery stores are considerably larger than they were as recently as 20 years ago and now sell everything from traditional grocery store fare to clothing to items one might expect to find in a hardware store.

Another aspect of grocery shopping that has changed over the years is the groceries themselves.

Nutrition labels have been around for decades, though today’s labels contain considerably more information than they did in years past. As a result, many shoppers, even those who make sure to read product labels before placing items in their shopping carts, may not know exactly what they’re buying.

Nutrition labels can be complicated, and ingredients that are beneficial for some consumers may be harmful to others. Seniors and people with existing medical conditions should always discuss their diets with their physicians, asking if there are specific foods they should avoid or seek out. In addition, the following three tips, courtesy of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, can help consumers understand nutrition labels and make sound choices.

1. Read the serving size information Serving size information on nutrition labels indicates both the recommended serving size and the number of servings contained in t he package.

The AND recommends that consumers compare the portion size they actually eat to the serving size listed on the label. Some people may consume more than one serving size per meal, and that can affect just how much of each ingredient,

For those advised to heed the daily values recommendations, ingredients that are listed at 5 percent DV or less are considered low, while those that are 20 percent DV or higher are considered high.

The AND recommends aiming low for ingredients like sodium, saturated fat and cholesterol, while high in vitamins, minerals and fiber can be beneficial.

Benefit Performance Raises $7,000

Innovative Fitness Programs For Seniors

Dance Connection of Islip presented their 4th Annual Making Wishes Grow, a performance benefit to assist Make-AWish of Suffolk County, NY in granting the wishes of local children.

The performance at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School in Hicksville on Sunday, January 19th raised money that will help to grant the wish of Katherine, a 16-year-old Islip Town resident whose wish is to go to Disney World with her family.

The performance featured Create Dance Center, the Dance Connection

Performance Team, JAM Dance & Fitness, Trinity Dance Company, and comedy by Kyle Kratzke.

All net proceeds will be donated to Make-A-Wish of Suffolk County.

“This performance never fails to leave both our audience and our performers with a smile, and our dancers are able to get a sense of how their love of dance can help to enrich the lives of others and to give back to the community that they live in. It’s a fantastic experience for everyone involved and we are so grateful for all the

Daylight Saving Time March 8 Most parts of North America will begin Daylight Saving Time on March 8, 2020, at 2:00 a.m., respective to their time zones. In the European Union, “Summer Time” begins at 1:00 a.m. on the last Sunday in March, which this year will be March 29. The change is made at the same absolute time across all time zones respective to Greenwich Mean Time, which also is known as Universal Time.

One reason DST is still practiced in many areas of the world is to push an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening

and make better use of this daylight. There are various origin stories linked to DST, including one that involves Benjamin Franklin. DST also has been touted as a way to save resources during times of war or as a means to helping farmers be more prosperous.

However, despite the many proclaimed benefits of DST, there are many detractors who insist that there are no perceived benefits. Some of these DST naysayers say switching the clocks twice a year can negatively affect the body’s natural circadian rhythm. Various efforts both domestically

and abroad have been instituted to abolish DST, but as of 2020, it remains on the calendar.

The Long Island Music Hall of Fame is proud to announce that it is accepting applications for the 2020 School Recognition Program.

The Long Island Music Hall of Fame High School Recognition Program is designed to identify Long Island High School music programs that are creating valuable music experiences for their students and that are incorporating the National and New York State’s Standards for the arts in creative and meaningful ways.

“We are very excited to offer Long Island schools an opportunity to have their music programs objectively evaluated,” said LIMHOF Vice Education Committee Chairman Tom Needham.

“We will not only honor programs but will also share feedback and learn more about the challenges each school faces as we continue to support and promote music education on Long Island.”

On Feb. 7, Connetquot’s John Pearl Elementary School welcomed students, teachers, friends and family to the school’s annual “O-Town Circus” assembly. Prior to the performance, fifth graders worked hard in their

physical education classes to learn the skills necessary to perform as clowns, jugglers, plate spinners, stilt walkers and masters of the diablo stick and Chinese yo-yo.

The circus program, supported by the PTA,

is designed to motivate students to participate more fully in physical education and cultural arts activities. The broad smiles on the faces of the performers and audience members confirmed that everyone enjoyed the show.

Preparing For Lent And Easter The Christian tradition of Lent is celebrated across the globe by many different denominations of the faith.

Lent is a 40-day period of sacrifice that begins on Ash Wednesday and culminates with the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday.

Lent is designed to help Christians prepare for Easter through prayer, repentance of sins, almsgiving, denying the ego, and putting and end to sinful practices.

Fasting is a component of Lent, as is abstinence from certain behaviors.

In fact, in some Western countries, Catholics have been encouraged to adopt forms of abstinence that do not involve food and

drink during Lent. All actions serve as forms of self-denial to mirror the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for his people.

Abstaining from alcohol is not mandatory during Lent. That might be traced to ancient times, when wine and other forms of alcohol were safer to drink than pathogen-filled water sources. But many people now choose to give up alcohol for Lent.

Today, fasting is primarily reserved for Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent, including Good Friday. Adherents may opt to fully fast, but most only eschew meat and poultry as a nod to selfdenial, opting for seafood and vegetarian fare instead.

While much focus is placed on what is denied during Lent, it can be an ideal time to reflect on what is gained by living a life in which God is first and foremost. Spending more time in prayer and away from trivial distractions can be a way to live a more faithful life during Lent and beyond. In addition, aspiring to be more Christlike during Lent can make this special season even more powerful. During Lent, Christians can make a concerted effort to help the poor, work with a charity or volunteer at their church.

Lent is a solemn time, but one that can bolster one’s faith.

Too Much Sleep Can Be Harmful Lack of sufficient sleep is a problem for millions of people across the globe. But what about too much sleep? Though busy men and women might think it’s impossible to get too much sleep, excessive sleep is nothing to joke about.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep per night (the NSF notes that a small percentage of people may need 10 hours of sleep per night).

People who routinely sleep more than seven to nine hours may have an underlying health concern. For example, the NSF notes that a recent study found that routinely sleeping more than 10 hours per night can be linked to metabolic syndrome. The Mayo Clinic says metabolic syndrome refers to a cluster of conditions that occur together and increase a person’s risk for serious health issues, including heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

Obesity, headache and back pain are some

additional potential side effects of excessive sleep.

The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School notes that genetics and age are significant factors in determining the amount of sleep healthy individuals need.

However, young adults should resist the notion that they need less than seven hours of sleep per night because they’re young, while older adults should similarly avoid thinking that they need more sleep simply because they’re aging. As the NSF guidelines suggest, the sweet spot for healthy adults is typically between seven and nine hours of sleep per night.

A good night’s rest is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. But adults must recognize that excessive amounts of sleep can be just as detrimental as inadequate sleep. Individuals can speak with their physicians to determine their specific sleep needs.

DENTAL CONTEST WINNERS - In Sayville school district, Sunrise Drive students in Jeannette Ainsle’s art classes were given a creative assignment.

In preparation for Dental Health Awareness month in February, the students created emojis that had dental–health themes. These creations were entered into a school-wide contest and the winners were announced by Senator Monica Martinez during a visit from Suffolk Pediatric Dentistry. This contest was part of a school-initiative promoted by Senator Monica Martinez to bring awareness to dental health.

At the February assembly the Sunrise Drive students from Kindergarten to Fourth grade were introduced to Dentist Dr. Philip Coniglio and assistants Elaine and Marnie by Senator Martinez who made a special trip back from Albany for

the occasion. After the dental professionals demonstrated proper dental-care practices, Senator Martinez announced the winners of the emoji contest.

Each winner was awarded a proclamation.

Immediately after the Dentist’s visit, Senator Martinez met with all the Sunrise Drive fifth graders in the multipurpose room to participate in the Readers as Leaders Site-Based Team PARP initiative and to discuss her journey from teacher to State Senator.

She fielded questions from the students who were eager to share their insights and opinions based upon both what they had learned in their government-studies classes as well as heard on the news. Foster care, child protection services, gang violence, and animal rights were among the topics and Senator Martinez was quite impressed with level of curiosity and understanding the

students demonstrated. · “This was another great day for Sunrise Drive,” Principal Dr. James Foy said. “Students in our younger grades learned from professionals in the field about dental hygiene. The puppets and warm demeanor displayed by Dr. Coniglio will also go a long way in taking away any stigma that the dentist is scary.”

Dr. Foy added, “Senator Martinez was wonderful!

Our fifth graders asked her specific questions about topics that are important to them. The senator was able to give real answers that helped students to understand government procedures and what she and her like-minded colleagues are working on.

My favorite part was her asking her assistant to take specific notes on some amazing ideas that our own Sunrise Drive students had on making our community and state a better place.”

Sharing The Truth About Anxiety Disorders At the recent well-attended Parent-and-Community Evening, Sayville School District screened Angst, a 56-minute documentary that brought educators and families together for a united purpose—to clear the air about anxiety disorders. Angst “includes interviews with kids, teens, educators, experts and parents. The goal is to start a global conversation about anxiety and mental health.

Most importantly, the film is designed to help people identify and understand the symptoms of anxiety disorders and encourage them to reach out for help.”

“No goal is more important,” Sayville Schools Superintendent Dr. John E. Stimmel said during his welcoming remarks, “than the social emotional well-being of our children.”

This initiative “reflects the priority of the school board to address the needs of the whole child.” After, Dr. Stimmel introduced Mrs. Jillian Makris—familiar to many Sayville residents as the former assistant principal at the High School, but through restructuring of administrative roles has begun this year as the Director of Student Services—who orchestrated the evening event.

Mrs. Makris welcomed all the Sayville and Bayport-Bluepoint residents in attendance and acknowledged Jessica Olsen Hoek from The Great South Bay Coalition. “We are really honored and privileged to have a partnership with the Great South Bay Coalition and their organization.

Our partnership is one of the reasons we were able to bring this documentary Angst to our community.”

Mrs. Makris reiterated the main objective of the documentary Angst, adding that it was created “to rid our community and our world of the stigma associated with mental health.” She explained, “…we thought that it was important for the parents to see the film first, so that when your children (students in grades 8 through 12) view it tomorrow, you can have a conversation as a family.” Mrs. Makris also introduced Sayville staff from Pupil Personnel Services and Guidance as the “integral members of our PPS team here today.” Robin McKinnon (CA); Catherine Pennello (CA), Lynn Hill (LA), Lauri Carluccio (LA), Toni Fabian (SD), Dawn Lloyd-Matthews (MS), Noemi Barczak (MS), Lisa Scannell (MS), Jennifer Doddato (HS), Elizabeth

Quinlan (HS), Beth Cooperman (HS), Jennifer Pearson (DW), Guidance: Colleen Backer (HS), Tim Dillon (HS), Kelly Raycroft (MS) In addition, Mrs. Makris introduced David Hymowitz, a licensed social worker for thirty years who specializes in mental health and substance abuse. “He has been working as a staff trainer within the district this year.”

After the screening, the audiences were moved by the honest and poignant struggles of the children with anxieties in Angst. And the takeaway message— “let’s talk about it!”—was loud and clear. As the Angst information materials state: “Spread the word. Believe Change is possible.”

“As a district, we are really proud of how the evening turned out,” Mrs. Makris reflected the following day.

“It was awesome to see the community and staff come together for a common goal. And it was exciting to hear the feedback from our students after watching the film. This is what it is about—the students, first and foremost. That is the message—we are here for them to support them in every way possible.”

Musical Marauders Take To The Stage Talented student actors, musicians and stage crew members in BayportBlue Point High School’s music department recently brought to life “Pirates of Penzance,” an 1879 comedic opera that tells the love story of a pirate and the daughter of a majorgeneral. was welcomed for three separate performances of the show, all of which wowed them and kept them laughing.

According to Paul Weber, chairperson for the art and music department, “The production team congratulates the cast, pit orchestra and crew

on another tremendous musical.

The solo and ensemble vocal performances in this year’s production were some of the most difficult and impressive displays of musicianship to grace the stage of Bayport-Blue High School’s auditorium.”

Waverly Showcases Coding Skills Cronin, students worked independently using laptops to explore the vast coding capabilities of the website. Students coded motion, sound, appearance and setting for a scene that incorporated a character of their choosing. The activity allowed students in fourth and fifth grade to improve upon the skills they have

learned participating in similar activities in the past.

In addition, first grade students were introduced to the coding program Kodable to establish introductory coding skills before participating in more advanced lessons in the future.

Partnership Will Provide Complimentary Rooms For Cancer Patients Treated Away from Home Cancer patients traveling far from home for treatment across Long Island and in Queens need not worry where to stay during their care due to a new partnership agreement between the American Cancer Society, Courtyard Marriott and Springhill Suites.

If you’re a cancer patient and your doctor says, “Your best hope for a cure is in another town,” your first thought may be, “Where am I going to stay and how am I going to pay for it?” The American Cancer Society can help.

The Society works together with hotels through its Hotel Partners Program to provide complimentary and/or reduced rate rooms to cancer patients who need to travel out of town to receive treatment.

One hotel in Jamaica, NY and another in Ronkonkoma, NY, have joined the Society’s Hotel Partners Program, providing complimentary

rooms to cancer patients who must travel across Long Island for treatment.

The American Cancer Society recognizes the following hotels that have joined the program: Courtyard by Marriot Long Island MacArthur Airport, Ronkonkoma Springhill Suites New York/JFK Airport, Jamaica These two hotels have generously agreed to offer lodging, when available, to patients traveling to their treatments.

“These partnerships illustrate our united front against cancer,” said Barbara Messeder, Mission Delivery Manager for the American Cancer Society in Hauppauge, NY. “Our hotel partners show a commitment to community and to patients struggling with cancer.
