Students in each class acted out familiar penguin-themed stories, including Mr. Popper’s Penguins, and showcased the dioramas they created to demonstrate a penguin’s natural habitat. Additionally, while dressed in black and white clothing, the students enjoyed monochromatic snacks while sharing their newfound knowledge.

Going For The Gold Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) student Jessica seeks to accomplish the highest achievement in the world of Girl Scouts, the Girl Scout Gold Award.

In order to attain this prestigious award she has to challenge herself to change the world. Jessica had to identify an issue, investigate it thoroughly, create a plan, present it, and educate and inspire others.

Jessica plans to change the world one presentation at a time. She presented to her peers at the Bellport Academic Center Program at Patchogue-Medford High School (PMHS), and to students in a psychology class at PMHS. Her topic autism.

Jessica is on the autism spectrum and has braved challenges in her life. “I want to share my personal journey,” said Jessica.

“Having autism used to be a negative stigma for me but I don’t think it is anymore. My reality used to be total isolation but with the help of the ESBOCES teachers, I think it can be advantageous.”

In her presentation, Jessica tells how each person with autism has their own unique puzzle.

She shared how she views things and reacts to things differently than other

people. She has struggled with socializing. “I have a zany sense of humor and I used to use weird and abstract words or expressions to describe things,” she said.

“I want to share my life’s puzzle with my peers and anyone who will give me the opportunity to speak.

I want them to learn about autism from someone who has it,” said Jessica.

Her presentation lasted

about 30 minutes but the information was interesting, creative, and visual.

Jessica began her presentation with a definition of autism and its language derivative.

“Autism comes from the Greek term “autos” meaning “self,” which ultimately translates to “an isolated self”, she said.

Facts and statistics wound through her presentation but Jessica always brought it back to herself and compared the information to her personal challenges and triumphs.

It takes courage to get up in front of people and talk. Several students asked Jessica how she was

able to do it. She said, “I’ve learned confidence and structure at ESBOCES. The teachers helped me to come out of my comfort zone.”

Jessica is also working on an art project for the Gold Award in her ESBOCES Art, Design, and Visual Communication Program. She is creating large puzzle pieces that will represent her struggle with autism.

Puzzle pieces are used to represent the diversity of the people and families living with autism and the mystery and complexity of the autism spectrum.

Grand Marshal Announced The Greater Patchogue Foundation and the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce’s Cultural Heritage Committee have named Patrick Moore of Patchogue as the 2014 Grand Marshal of the St. Patrick’s Parade and May The Road Rise To Meet Ye 5K on Sunday, March 30th, at 12:30 p.m.

Moore was born in Dublin, Ireland and is a long time Patchogue resident active in the Patchogue Amvets and Patchogue Elks Lodge.

“Our St. Patrick’s Irish heritage events are among Patchogue’s most popular annual happenings and they have grown to become the largest celebration presented by the Greater Patchogue Foundation’s Cultural Heritage Committee,” said Tom Keegan, chair of the Cultural Heritage Committee. “We welcome all to wear green and join us at these wonderful

festive occasions. Slainte!”

The St. Patrick’s Parade kicks off with the May The Road Rise To Meet Ye 5K at the corner of East Main Street and Rose Avenue. The Parade will travel west on Main Street from Route 112, ending at the intersection of West Avenue and West Main Street. The 5K Road Race will continue passed the parade route onto local streets and ending on the corner of Jennings Avenue and Thorn Street, just north of the Patchogue Fire Department. The Parade will feature floats, local officials and many Irish pipe bands.

Bayport-Blue Point School District invites the community to take part in the 2nd Annual BBPAthlon on Saturday, April 5th. Check-in for this year’s event will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Bayport-Blue Point High School, followed by

At its meeting on February 5th at That Meetball Place in Patchogue, the Patchogue Rotary Club presented Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck with a check in the amount of $110,000.

The money was raised from the 44th Annual Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival, which was held September 19th, 2013 at the Bellport Country Club. The event’s honorees were the members of the Gallipoli family and the memory of Nick Gallipoli.

Since its inception, the golf tournament has

raised over $1 million for the camp. The camp has special meaning to the Fuoco family as Beth Ann Fuoco, who has Spina Bifida, enjoyed the camp for many years. As a result, in 1969, Buddy Fuoco and the Brookhaven Italian American Club began donating all proceeds from the Fuoco Memorial exclusively to Camp PaQua-Tuck. Years later, the Rotary Club became the sponsor, and continues the tradition today, along with the Fuoco family.

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp

serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education.

Throughout the program, campers participate in many activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs, swimming and boating.

Honoree Selected The Women for Brookhaven have named Maureen Mennella, a resident of Bayport, as the honoree for the 20th Anniversary event. The celebration will be held on Thursday, April 10th at 6:30 p.m. at the West Lake Inn, Patchogue.

Maureen Mennella, a 28year veteran in the banking industry, is currently the Market Manager at People’s United Bank (PUB) in Bayport, managing six PUB branches in Suffolk County.

Maureen is the PresidentElect and Treasurer of the Patchogue Rotary Club. She was recently

awarded Rotary’s highest honor, the Paul Harris Fellowship Award, for her outstanding contributions to the community. She is on the Board of Directors for the Victim Information Bureau of Suffolk County.

As a volunteer for the Blue Point Salvation Army, she teaches financial literacy and advocates for their Angel Tree Program. She is also working with the Bayport Blue Point and Patchogue Medford School Districts, mentoring students in their Job Shadow and Career Day programs.

Oliver On Stage A young orphan boy’s struggle through life unfolded on the stage at Bayport-Blue Point High School this February when a cast of talented studentactors performed the hit musical Oliver!

The actors and student SHARING ART - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently attended the 4th pit orchestra entertained Annual Scholarship Fundraiser for the Women Sharing Art group, a locally-based audiences during their non-profit that fosters the local women’s artistic community. Every year the group awards two scholarships to deserving high school seniors. This year the winners were Elizabeth Galian of Bayport-Blue Point High School and Daniella Gallego of Brentwood High School.

The Lake Ronkonkoma Civic Association is pleased to announce they are offering a $500 scholarship to any January 2014 or June 2014 graduating senior who intends to go on to college and lives within the Lake Ronkonkoma Civic Organization boundaries (see webpage).

The application and activities verification packet can be picked up in the Sachem North High School Guidance Office or the Teen Desk at Sachem Public Library.

A minimum 500-word essay is required, with a maximum of 600 words.

The essay is entitled “How I Have Made A Contribution To My Community.”

The completed packet and essay must be mailed to the address on the application by April 24th, 2014.

Random Thoughts By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As if navigating the roads this winter wasn’t hazardous enough with the snow and ice and freezing rain, we now have a new obstacle to contend with – the vast wasteland of potholes cropping up on every corner and parkway ramp. Try attempting to slow down as your headlights catch a glimpse of the crater before you, just waiting to devour a tire or two. One more time – is it spring yet?

At least spring training has finally arrived, and with it the not entirely unexpected announcement

from Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter that this season will be his final year playing baseball. A class act until the end, Jeter took to his Facebook page to write a heartfelt message of thanks and appreciation to his fans, his teammates, his family and friends.

He will leave the Yankees at the top of his game, a surefire first-ballot Hall of Famer with a legacy the likes of which will not be seen again.

Speaking of, remember all those long lost friends you thought you would never see again? Well, thanks to social networking, virtual reunions have become fairly

common. Sure, there’s plenty of useless material to navigate through; but if you learn to utilize these sites properly, the odds of reconnecting with someone are pretty likely. Everything in moderation, right?

That’s the mentality you need to adopt for spring – moderation – with diet, exercise, everything. Those bathing suits that have been cropping up in every department store? They’re not going away anytime soon. Better crawl out of that winter state of hibernation and greet the brand new season right around the corner… it’s just over the horizon, past the potholes.

Protecting The Earth James Wilson Young Middle School’s Ecology Club has been learning various ways to reduce waste, protect the Earth and decrease their carbon footprint. To aid in this effort, this winter the club attended a workshop lecture with Town of Islip recycling educator Danielle Wynn and coordinated a recycling drive for used electronics.

During the workshop, Ms. Wynn discussed which

materials are eligible for recycling, several projects that can be done with recycled materials and showed the students how to make paper. During an upcoming meeting, the students will be putting the papermaking lessons Ms. Wynn shared into action.

As part of the monthlong drive, the club collected numerous used cell phones, cameras, iPods and other electronics.

Fundraiser A Success

All donations were sent to a California company that either refurbishes the items or recycles the materials they are made of. This reduces the amount of materials in the waste stream, protects the groundwater from toxic chemicals that are in the phones, and reduces energy and pollution from mining of metals needed in the construction of phones.

Over the last several weeks, new and used jeans were collected and dropped off at various donation sites throughout the Town, including the Islip Youth Bureau, Legislator Cilmi’s Office, the Keep Islip Clean office, and Islip, Sachem East, Hauppauge, Central Islip, Sayville, Bayport-

Blue Point and West Islip High Schools.

In total, more than 1,400 pairs of jeans were collected, and later sorted by a team of staff and volunteers. The Teens for Jeans program was established seven years ago and has been successful in collecting more than 3.5 million pairs of jeans that have benefitted those in need.

Through the Promise To Remember Me campaign,

which aims to bring the awareness of diabetes to lawmakers, active JDRF Youth Ambassadors like Miss Sullivan promote Type 1 Diabetes awareness in their communities across the country.

Miss Sullivan also encouraged Cherokee Elementary School faculty members and her classmates to wear blue outfits to help bring

further awareness for Type 1 Diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes in children, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes is a condition in which a child’s pancreas no longer produces the insulin the child needs to survive, making them dependent on constant insulin injections.

in attendance to “Speak Red” to help save lives and take charge of their cardiovascular health and share the life-altering and life-saving information of the day with women they know.
