A Unique Boutique with a Selfless Cause Amanda Munz, founder of The Fashion Foundation, started a non-profit in 2014 to sell fashion apparel at a reasonable price and, more importantly, to help provide students with school supplies.

As someone who has always loved fashion, Amanda decided to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising, she went on to receive a Master’s degree in Public Administration.

While getting her feet wet in the fashion industry, she constantly took note of people throwing fashion apparel in the garbage, as well as samples building up that designers didn’t know what to do with. This inspired her to start The Fashion Foundation, where she utilizes those pieces by selling them at a reasonable price, and then pays it forward by using the profits earned to purchase school supplies for students to help them succeed.

Today, Munz runs a showroom in Farmingdale, as well as a pop-up showroom in Manhattan, where new apparel can be purchased for a fraction of its retail cost. Many items are also available for purchase on her website, www.TheFashionFoundation.org. To this day, she has received thousands of pieces from fashion companies and helped countless students succeed. The Fashion Foundation has purchased clean uniforms, notebooks, art

HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem.

In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic.

This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can!

There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance

to succeed. Below, you will see a photo of Ian Mugambi, a 12 year-old boy in need of a sponsor. Ian lost his mother and sister and currently resides at this orphanage in Meru. For further details on mentoring Ian or another child, please contact Aida Mann at AidaMann@optonline.com. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor.

You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and Aida often travel to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to come along so they can meet firsthand the child they sponsor.

Growing up on Long Island, I realize it is easy to be misled into thinking everyone lives as we do, but that is not the case.

Ian is much more than just someone in the photo on this page; he is one of many people across the world who is reaching out for help. Although there are plenty of ways we can spend $1 a day, using that money to mentor a child in need is truly a priceless experience!

Heck, some pre-schools now require a rigorous admissions process; certainly quite different than the days of nap time and snack time, broken up by a few hours of coloring and piecing together puzzles.

Not anymore. Now, it is all about results. Anything less is simply not good enough. No such thing as a participation trophy. Minimizing damage only goes so far. At a certain point, we all need to take the leap. We must choose to forge ahead, or fall behind. I don’t think anyone would prefer the latter. Close your eyes and jump.

Model UN Conference assigned to represent a sovereign nation, placed on a committee to discuss important current world topics and concerns, and asked to make recommendations.

The student-delegates tackled current world issues, created a peaceful world, and solved problems that are meant to protect and improve the lives of individuals around the

“This was one of the largest Model U.N. conferences to date,” said Connetquot High School Model United Nations Club adviser Jennifer Bay. “We had almost 300 people attended, which included delegates, conference staff, chaperones, volunteers and school advisers.”

STUDY NIGHT - Connetquot High School’s Future Teachers of America Club, along with adviser Lynn Parks, recently hosted the district’s first FTA Study Night in an effort to tutor younger students within the district. Throughout the course of the night, students in grades kindergarten through eight brought in their homework and worksheets from their classrooms and received assistance from the upperclassmen.

JANUARY STUDENTS OF THE MONTH - On February 7th, Councilman Neil Foley (right) visited Patchogue-Medford High School to honor the Students of the Month for January and February. Pictured with Councilman Foley are the January honorees Jaelyn Griffiths and Matthew Correa. Councilman Foley presents the award each month in recognition of the students’ academic achievements and their contributions to the Patchogue-Medford community.

Jane Austen’s beloved and timeless novel Pride and Prejudice was published on January 28th, 1813. Written during the Georgian Era, it is one of the most popular novels in English literature, with over 20 million copies sold. To mark the anniversary of this enduring literary legacy, the Connetquot Public Library hosted Pride and Prejudice: Tea, Craft and Celebration on Thursday, January 25th.

Incorporating the style and elegance of British society, Librarians Janet Eagan and Diane Haberstroh, attired in hand-made dresses, spent weeks preparing

for the special celebration.

From the retro tea pots and serving trays to the elegantly scripted place cards and British-style tea sandwiches and sweets, no detail was left to chance.

Imagining the lives of the Bennets and their circle of friends and acquaintances, the exchange of pleasantries and polite small talk over tea. The reality of Mrs. Bennet anxious to marry off her five daughters, especially, Elizabeth, the eldest, the societal expectations of class and the authenticity of life and love. It is with great irony and humor this story comes to life becoming a timeless classic.

Several adaptations of both novel and cinema have been endeavored. Librarian Janet Eagan showed film clips from three separate versions of the movie providing context and narration of each. Discussing not only the scene but the way in which each version offers its own interpretation. From Mr. Darcy’s proposal to Elizabeth “I love you. Most ardently. Please do me the honor of accepting my hand,” to her rejection of Darcy as “the

Pride & Prejudice last man in the world I could ever be prevailed upon to marry.” Character’s such as Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Darcy’s aunt whose ardent rejection of Elizabeth as a possible intended for her nephew, touch on class distinction and an exaggerated sense of self.

After the movie clips, participants decorated a Jane Austen inspired personal journal with decoupage, stamps, and embellishments. They were able to take pictures in a photo cut out board to save as a memento of the afternoon. When the journals were completed, everyone retreated to the table for high tea. While most people are familiar with the traditional high tea, there is also low tea consisting of light snacks and tea, usually lounging on a comfortable chair or couch. Participants reveled taking a trip back in time.

Librarians Janet Eagan and Diane Haberstroh recreated a captivating time period of grace and sophistication, paying homage to the treasured novel and creating an exceptional celebration. For those who gave their time and talent; Joan Diener Palmer, Josephine Barranca, Christine Aiello, Dawn DiAngelo, Nancy Seims, those extra special touches were most welcome.

In the end, Elizabeth accepts Mr. Darcy’s proposal.

Elizabeth, as well as her sister Jane, marries. “Think only of the past as its remembrance gives you pleasure.” We hope for all that attended, they remember the day with fondness and know that we welcome you each and every day, to celebrate the past, look forward to the future and make new memories.

A Love of Reading During the collaborative session, the fourth-graders read picture books to the younger students in an effort to get them excited about the many wonders of reading. In return, the first-graders read some of their pieces of writing aloud for all to hear.

According to their website, every year on World Read Aloud Day people around the globe take time to read aloud together, share stories and advocate for literacy as a human right that belongs to all people.

ISLAND TRAVEL - The Ronkonkoma Middle School drama club recently put on a dazzling performance of “Once On This Island Jr.,” for three consecutive evenings beginning on February 8th. Adapted from the popular Broadway show, the play tells the tale of a peasant girl on a tropical island who uses the power of love to bring together people of different social classes. During a collaborative event, the dental students used a variety of toys and worksheets to demonstrate ideal brushing and flossing techniques to the youngsters.

Toys included extra-large, inflatable molars; oversized toothbrushes; toy dental sets; and graphic worksheets. Next, preschoolers watched an animated video about healthy hygiene and then sat in the dental chairs for a free screening. Screenings

were performed by the dental assisting teacher and the former teacher (she now works in another capacity at the school), both of whom are registered dental hygienists. “This collaboration provided my students with handson interaction with pediatric patients and the opportunity to learn and assist in real-time as I performed screenings,” explained Dental Assisting Teacher Tierney Marzigliano.

Taking learning beyond the walls of the classroom, Karen Pitka’s fourth-grade class at Connetquot Central School District’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School recently embarked on a “virtual field trip” hosted by Lauren Tarshis, author of the “I Survived” historical fiction series.

The virtual field trip, “Beyond the Battlefield,” features a highly engaging video segment in which Tarshis takes both students

and teachers alike behind the scenes of the new American Revolution Museum in Philadelphia.

Students were able to see historical treasures such as canteens and muskets, meet historians and hear stories of the young people who were a part of America’s fight for independence.

“The goal of this virtual field trip was to help bring this highly important time in history to life for

students and open new doors of curiosity,” said Mrs. Pitka. “My fourthgrade historians highly enjoyed seeing one of their favorite authors and are eager to learn more about the American Revolution during social studies and English language arts.”

The Fashion Merchandising Students from the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology in Bellport recently put their creative expertise to use by designing the window displays at Ooh La La on Main Street in Sayville. The Eastern Long

Island Academy of Applied Technology is the Career and Technical Education Program at Eastern Suffolk BOCES. Students visited the boutique, developed their ideas back in the classroom, returned to the store to have the manager review their sketches, and went

to work after they received approval. They chose new clothing to spotlight in the window, in addition to accessories and props, and constructed approximately two dozen oversized paper flowers to hang at various lengths to create an overflowing cascade effect.

Intricate floral designs were also painted on the inside of the windows. Said Fashion Merchandising Teacher Joyce Sims, “This project provided my students with authentic firsthand experience. They used decor to showcase new items in the store, and inexpensive materials such as paint and tissue paper to make the window design pop and grab the attention of passersby.

They worked as a team to bring their ideas to fruition and we’re grateful to Ooh La La for giving them this opportunity.”

Animal Artwork Students used toilet paper rolls as armatures to create the body of their animals and then shaped the animal’s heads from pinch pots, a molding technique achieved by pinching the thumb and forefinger to form a bowl-shaped mold.

As part of the lesson in ceramics, students learned each step of the kiln firing process to produce finished ceramic sculptures.

Students began with the initial firing, called the bisque fire, before applying a glaze to their sculptures and placing them in the kiln for the final firing, known as the glaze fire.

Throughout the building, each grade level is participating in a ceramics activity to encourage manual dexterity and support the creative process.

In Great Form At the recent Long Island Forensic Association Debate Tournament hosted

by Schreiber High School in Port Washington, Sayville’s Eric Stenzel won second place Varsity LD, and qualified for States.

“We started the Debate team last year,” explains Debate Team Club Advisor Ms. Eileen Walsh-Ahrens, “so this is Sayville’s second year competing at LIFA. Eric Stenzel is the Captain and leader extraordinaire who has grown this team.

He began debating as a Novice in his sophomore year and jumped straight to Varsity level this year as a junior - skipping JV! After placing twice in LIFA tournaments at the Varsity level, he has qualified to compete at States for Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate. His story is very inspiring.”

Ms. Walsh-Ahrens had more good news to share about a recent competition at Schreiber: “Alex Petruzelli also won fourth

place Novice LD, earning half the qualification to compete in States. In the most recent tournament on February 10th at Jericho High School, three Sayville debaters competed. Jordan Ramsaywak and Ben Scapellati both competed at Junior Varsity level despite only beginning debate this year. Lindsey Yoder, a freshman, competed at the Novice level. Although Eric already qualified for States, he attended the tournament to support

the team’s efforts. Jordan went 2-2, Ben went 1-3 and Lindsey went 2-2.

The Sayville High School Debate club has made significant progress thanks to its hard working, criticalthinking, and dedicated students. The members research, write and practice public speaking with one another to acquire the necessary skills before the competitions.

Commander Named Ann E. Frenz, SN, Bayport, became commander of the United States Power Squadrons, District 3, covering Suffolk, Nassau, Brooklyn and Queens, New York, at the Melville Marriott on Saturday, March 25th, calling her watch and the 16 local squadron commanders within D3 “Seafaring Frenz’s.”

Ann has achieved the grade of Senior Navigator, indicating that she has earned the top educational achievement of Navigator, along with completion of six elective courses – covering every aspect of navigation and seamanship.

Ann joined Patchogue Bay Power Squadron holding a woman’s certificate, then a full member in 1989, and earned life membership in 2014. As Squadron Commander of Patchogue Bay in 2004, Ann won the Commander’s Challenge and placed 2nd nationally for the Member Involvement Retention Award. She was editor of the newsletter, Periscope, for 19 years and enjoys being a Vessel Examiner, teaching Instructor Development to members and Americas Boating

Course to the community.

Nationally, Ann worked for 20 years for the Ship’s Store, was elected Rear Commander from 20092011 and is Membership Committee representative for District 3. She also serves on the membership and social activities committees.

Ann and her Husband, Richard, reside in Bayport, have been married 48 years and are active members of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sayville. They enjoy boating on their 40’ Karma II and enjoy when their grandchildren, Brody, Brielle, Mallory and Kevin join them. Their son Matt, a Sea Tow Captain, is also a member of the Squadron.

Both Matt, a Physical Education teacher, his wife, Lauren and their daughter Kimberly – a music teacher, often join them on their boat. Richard and Ann enjoy traveling, both on land and sea.

Ann’s term of office as Commander of the United States Power Squadrons District 3 will be completed at the D3 Conference on Saturday, March 24th, at the Melville Marriott, 1350 Old Walt Whitman Road in Melville.

Special Fundraiser Waverly Avenue Elementary School fifth-grade student Casey Lynch took an idea to fruition as he organized a fundraiser to raise money for a cause that hits close to home. Casey’s father, John Lynch, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and after successful treatment beat the disease.

After approaching Waverly Principal John Ruggero with a written proposal, Casey put a plan into action to benefit the Lustgarten Foundation’s

research on pancreatic cancer.

He contacted the Lustgarten Foundation, which provided purple bracelets for Casey to sell for $1 each to raise donations. Casey vigorously promoted the fundraiser by making a morning announcement, creating flyers to display around the building and encouraged his peers to help spread the word of the cause.

Concluding the fundraiser, Casey and his classmates were visited by the Lustgarten

Foundation Vice President of Development Linda Gruskiewicz. Ms. Gruskiewicz spoke to the students about the significance of pancreatic cancer research and the difficulties associated with the diagnosis. Following the informational discussion, Casey presented the Lustgarten Foundation with a check for the funds he raised SPECIAL FUNDRAISER - Waverly Principal John Ruggero, Lustgarten Foundation in the amount of $700.
