Elementary And Middle School Art Exhibits At The BAFFA Art Gallery Parents, grandparents and the general public are invited to view art work by talented young students in area schools at the BAFFA Art Gallery in Sayville. On March 14th and 15th the exhibit will feature art work from students in elementary schools in Sayville, West Sayville, Bayport and Blue Point.
There will be an artists’ reception on Saturday, the 14th from 1 to 4 PM. On March 21st, middle school students from Sayville/West Sayville and Bayport/Blue Point school districts will be the featured artists. There will be an artists’ reception from 1 to 4 PM on that day. Exhibit hours on all

Exploring The Science Of Mixtures Sixth grade students at Seneca Middle School in Brian Bartalomy’s science class recently participated in a lab activity identifying parts of a mixture and accomplishing the separation of the mixture by physical means. To begin, students
reviewed the six ways to separate a mixture: filtering, evaporation, distillation, magnetism, picking the mixture apart or using a centrifuge. Students then worked collaboratively to observe and identify the characteristics of several mixtures, including iron
shavings, sugar, white rice and beans, and separated the mixtures. After completing the lab activity, students answered questions about the methods they used, further solidifying their newfound scientific knowledge on mixtures.
PAWS OF WAR - Being deployed to Afghanistan can be dangerous and stressful for our service members. Some of these service members rescue stray dogs and befriend them. When it’s time to head back to the United States, the last thing they can think of is leaving the dog behind to fend for itself. One soldier, Sgt. Dominick, is desperate to bring his dog, Jonsey, back home with him. In order for Paws of War to be successful at bringing a dog back to America from Afghanistan, they work with Nowzad, the only official animal shelter in Afghanistan, and get financial support from public donations. This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole. This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program. The upcoming spring season

Sachem BOE Celebrates Flaming Arrows State Champs It was a packed house during the Sachem Central School District’s Jan. 15 board of education meeting, as members of the board honored the Sachem Flaming Arrows marching band for conquering the New York State Field Band Conference Large School
Division 3 championship title. The Flaming Arrows were led by band director Thomas Carroll, as they took the field at Syracuse University in October 2019 for the competition. The group of nearly 100 students claimed the state
title with their flawlessly executed “RemiX” performance, which is an adaptation of Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 5.” The district congratulates the band on this incredible and memorable accomplishment.

Artist Appreciation Event United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Long Island is proud to announce a partnership with The Patchogue Theatre highlighting the Inaugural Art Appreciation Event to be held the month of February at the theatre located at 71 East Main Street, Patchogue, NY. “I am extremely excited to be teaming up with The Patchogue Theatre and the Patchogue community to promote UCP of Long Island’s amazing and inspirational artistry, hand-crafted and painted by our incredible individuals,” said Judith McCowan, President and CEO of UCP of Long Island. For the entire month of February, paintings created by UCP-LI’s Individuals in the Adult Day Art Program will be available for viewing to the public at the historic Patchogue
Theatre, right in the heart of The Patchogue Village. The Patchogue Theatre, a non-profit organization that enriches, educates, and entertains a diverse audience by cultivating and showcasing a broad variety of performing artists has been open for business since December of 1998. “It is an honor to join UCP of Long Island as a community partner to showcase the outstanding artistry work from their talented individuals,” said Gary Hygom, Executive Director of The Patchogue Theatre. The Patchogue Theatre will feature a total of 19 artists in the exhibit with 36 pieces of work to be viewed outside their famous auditorium. The Patchogue Theatre, in conjunction with UCP of Long Island, will host a special night highlighting the exhibit and our talented artists. Attendees will be shown the uniqueness of the paintings created by individuals with disabilities in UCP-LI’s Adult Art Program. This program was introduced to help them strengthen their fine motor-skills, relieve tightness caused by Cerebral Palsy, Arthritis & other conditions. With every stroke of the brush, UCP-LI’s artists demonstrate their skills. Each artist embraces his or her unique talent, using adaptive tools when needed & exploring unconventional techniques such as painting with bubble wrap, chopsticks, Brillo, chicken wire, among others.

Student Ingenuity Revs Up At Sagamore Speedway
For 20 years, Tom McGrath’s seventh grade technology classroom at Sagamore Middle School in the Sachem Central School District has transformed into the Sagamore Speedway to culminate a lesson on aerodynamics with a wooden racecar competition between classmates. The elaborate raceway serves as the test center for
the wooden cars students creatively design that incorporate engineering and design principals to reach a desired outcome. The detailed process requires students to brainstorm ideas, create a design, cut and customize their car before adding the finishing touches with elaborate paint schemes. The aerodynamically designed and pneumati-
cally powered racecar competition is the culminating event of the unit and draws great excitement from its competitors. Peers face off in head-to-head races on the two-lane track until a winner is determined from the bracketed format of the competition. Additionally, a separate competition is held to determine the most aesthetically pleasing car.
Hiawatha Takes Storybook Character To Court The multipurpose room at Hiawatha Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District transformed into a courtroom as fifth grade students participated in mock trial proceedings, where the famous storybook character Goldilocks was tried for her suspected crimes against the Three Bears. To prepare for the event,
the students worked with lawyer Glen Vogel to learn about the fundamentals of the American legal system and take part in activities to reinforce the concepts. The students then put their knowledge to the test by acting out a case based on the children’s book. Each student held different roles in the mock courtroom as they brought the scripted trial to life.
A jury composed of third grade students listened to testimony from the cast, which included the Big Bad Wolf, Chicken Little, Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The activity allowed students to strengthen their public-speaking skills and learn to identify characters’ points of view through analyzing questions and answers.

Clean Teeth, Healthier Bodies Brookhaven Elementary School students learned that keeping their teeth clean can improve the health of their bodies during a presentation by Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine student Joseph Sacco. Mr. Sacco was accompanied by toy dinosaur Dudley, who
provided the students with opportunities to test their knowledge of brushing and flossing. During the presentation, Mr. Sacco educated the students on brushing and flossing techniques, how to prevent cavities by eating healthy foods, and the importance of mouth
guards while playing sports. Select students used the large plastic toothbrush to brush Dudley’s teeth. At the end of the lesson, the students received a packet of information on how to maintain tooth health.

In 2015, a local grandmother suddenly had to take on full-time care of her young granddaughter and for this, she was not prepared. Debbie Loesch and her daughter Brittany turned to social media to simply ask random people if they had the items that were needed and if they be willing to donate them to this woman in her moment of need. Various people within certain Facebook groups did not take well to these requests and the motherdaughter duo caught some very negative backlash. Believing that there would be many people willing to help if they knew of the immediate need, they created a new Facebook Page: Angels of Long Island. With the purest of intention, neighbors helping neighbors, once again they asked friends and family “Can you help this woman, a neighbor, in need?” Quickly about 200 people connected to their page and within one week the woman’s needs were meet. And so it began, Neighbors Helping Neighbors. Knowing there were so many others in need, Debbie and Brittany started collecting whatever people were willing to donate. They stored it throughout their house and yard. As the
stockpile grew, they used a trailer, sheds, tents and tarps to not allow anything to go to waste knowing at some time, someone may need it. They were now consistently matching up many people to what they needed and knew they were on to something big. In 2017 Angels of LI opened a 3800 square foot thrift store located at 350-23 E. Main Street in Patchogue. Now they have all their donations displayed in a store setting. When someone is in crisis or moving from crisis to something more stable, they can come in and simply shop for what they need. Bed linens, furniture, pots and pans, clothes (within some guidelines of course) but all for free! The thrift store is open to the public to come purchase items as well. The money raised from sales directly supports the many other services their outreach program provides. With the help of their now over 60,000 followers, the Patchogue location hosts a few annual events all in line with their mission. The Angels, who are run solely by volunteers, turn their entire parking lot into an extension of the store. They set up a system for families during their “Back to School” event to go through and choose many items such as backpacks, school supplies, clothes, and shoes.

CHS Mental Health Professionals Volunteer in Puerto Rico Continued From 19 the island’s southern coast caused extensive property damage and aftershocks continue. Soacha, a resident of Ronkonkoma, is a clinical social worker for CHS’s Good Shepherd Hospice. Camargo, a Farmingdale resident, is a licensed master’s social worker at CHS’s Mercy Medical Center. They were in Puerto Rico from February 3 to February 10 as part of the GNYHA team.
During their time in Puerto Rico, Soacha and Camargo visited several communities including Guyanilla, Guanica and Ponce where they spoke with residents and provided information about available services. They listened to locals and provided mental health tips to help earthquake survivors cope with the difficult situation they face. “There are many people who are afraid to be in their homes,” said Soacha.
“They are unsure when the next earthquake will happen, how strong it will be and if their house will collapse with them inside.” As families work to repair the homes, the damage caused by the earthquakes is having a major impact on local children. Damaged schools have been closed for more than a month and many students are now with their families living in tents at recovery camps.
“With schools destroyed it has led to feelings of anxiety and depression among many students,” Camargo said. Soacha and Camargo felt compelled to volunteer after seeing the struggles Puerto Rico residents have had in recovering from natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes. “As someone who is Hispanic I felt obligated to help,” Soacha explained. “It was also a chance as a human being to step up
and provide assistance to those in need.” Camargo added, “As an educated Hispanic woman born and raised in the United States, I felt it was my duty to assist the communities in need in Puerto Rico. The people have been very receptive to the services provided, which drives my passion to continue helping even with our trip now over.” About Catholic Health Services CHS is an integrated system encompassing
