The spirit of the Winter Olympics was alive and well at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Premm Learning Center on Tuesday, January 28th, when the staff transformed the gymnasium into a charming Olympic Village, complete with games for students. Premm Learning Center (PLC) serves developmentally delayed students from ages 5-21.

Is it spring yet? Are we done with the endless parade of winter storms, bringing their onslaught of rain and sleet and slush and snow and ice and all that fun stuff? I know there are those who absolutely LOVE this season and all its wondrous whiteness, but seriously… enough is enough, don’t you think?

Over the last several months, our lives have been literally consumed by national weather forecasts, a succession of storms with oh-so-cute names, a lifetime supply of rock salt

and sand, mad rushes to the store for milk and eggs and bread (you know, for all those “milk” sandwiches you make while snowed in!) and the fabulous process of shoveling, cleaning the car off, shoveling the new mound of icy boulders generously distributed by the plows… and on and on and on. Oh, and that’s before we attempt the treacherous process of actually driving anywhere.

Like I said, is it spring yet?

So many have said that, this year, after the winter we’ve had, they promise not to complain about the heat. 90º and humid?

Awesome, sign me up!

Torrential downpours and thunderstorms? At least we won’t have to shovel!

Stay tuned. Guaranteed, the first heat wave we experience, all that will go out the window. Too much of anything is irritating, especially when it disrupts our daily routine. A little here and there – sure, we can all deal with that. But this winter has been one of extremes.

Of course, as I write these words, the forecast is calling for 50º next week.

Time to break out the tank tops and shorts; but better keep that shovel handy!

On Tuesday, January 7th, Edward J. Bosti Elementary School students and staff welcomed Suffolk County Police Officer Elisa McVeigh for an important visit. Bosti Principal, Dr. Gail Cholden, and 5th grade teacher Ms. Whitson, had invited Officer McVeigh to talk to students about the dangers of substance abuse, and sound decision making.

As part of Suffolk’s Police Smart program

Officer McVeigh provides age-appropriate information to students, from kindergarten to 8th grade, on topics such as stranger safety, bullying, internet safety and making sound decisions. Using a video, and extensive Q&A, McVeigh gave advice to the students about how to avoid dangerous substances and the importance of making informed decisions.

Officer McVeigh assured the youngsters that their

Bosti Elementary School students and staff thanked Police Officer Elisa McVeigh for visiting, and providing such important advice.

Allison Lane of Greenlawn, both of whom have been received the honor of being selected to the NYSSMA All State Choir.

As the singers exited, the dancers took their place and performed, “Dare you to Move” by the Vitamin String Quartet. This was a contemporary piece choreographed by students Natalie and Samantha Affenita, both of Bayport.

The group’s directors, Mr. Jared Berry (Bel Canto Chorale) and Mrs. Renee Sussman (Dance Company) are very proud of their students and look forward to collaborating again for future events.

On Saturday, January 18th, Performing Arts students from St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School performed at Carnegie Hall, one of the world’s most famous performance venues. The World Voices In Motion was a dual choral and dance performance sponsored by the Performing Arts Educators, an organization that produces student performances in world class venues.

Both SJB’s Bel Canto Chorale and Dance Company performed at this stellar event. The show opened with the seniors from Bel Canto Chorale singing the Star Spangled Banner later followed by a performance by the entire Bel Canto Chorale and finally the SJB Dance Company. The Chorale performed three pieces including “Word Was God”

by Rosephanye Powell; “Bring Me Little Water, Silvy” arranged by Moira Smiley and “Ave Maria”

Many sacrifices have been made by young men and women serving our country at home and abroad. Our focus is to demonstrate these goals to our Eighthgrade students with the hope they will acknowledge and appreciate how

fortunate they are to live in this country, and that someday the responsibility could fall on them to serve others. Sacrifice is never easy and we don’t always see the rewards….We go to Frost Valley each year to provide students with the opportunity to grow and learn about themselves as well as their classmates.

This activity was developed and specifically designed to challenge students…”

In their social studies classes prior to their Frost Valley Trip, the Eighth-graders conducted research on the mission of WWP foundation and how it helps wounded warriors. During advisory,

students were encouraged to create poster designs on the theme, either individually or as a group, which would include the words: fun, integrity, loyalty, innovation, and service.

The students also completed entries for the Frost Valley T-Shirt contest as well as a contest for writing either a poem, song, or other literature piece that reflected the core values of the Wounded Warrior Project.

As part of the agenda once they arrived in Frost Valley, the students discussed all the concepts that factored into their themes and how these values have impact on their lives in positive ways. After all the posters, color centerpieces of the theme, were displayed, the students voted for their favorite poster design based upon how well the theme was conveyed visually. Receiving the greatest number of votes for his poster design was Brady LaMartina.

The written submissions were also evaluated and

the judges’ decisions recognized three students for their stellar written works: Gabriele Thornton (poetry), Kaitlin Weber (poetry), and Sam Zanchelli (music lyrics).

The Middle School students came home from Frost Valley with a greater appreciation of what service to one’s country actually means. They had one more opportunity to express their gratitude to actual Veterans during the Holiday Jazz Tour on the last day before the Christmas break. There is, however, no such thing as perfection when it comes to humanity. As demonstrated by these two stars, even professionals are mortal.

When we do succeed, it is essential to recognize that we may have gotten lucky. There will always be someone just a little bit faster or a few inches taller. Nothing is certain, and we must earn what comes our way. It is all part of the master plan, and sometimes things work out. There is no such thing as a guarantee. Even Gold Medalists don’t get perfect scores.

With this being said, it is perfectly understandable that we may fail in our

everyday lives. There is no guarantee that practice will lead to greatness. We can still fall short of our goals.

I try to implement this mindset into every facet of my persona. With college decisions steadily flowing in, I realize that I am not perfect. It would be irrational to think that I would be accepted to all of the colleges that I applied to. Rejection is an essential part of life, as losing is a key element of the Olympics.

Much like the Olympians, I know that every failure occurs for a reason.

Although on a much smaller scale, my futile pursuit of excellence is a model of their determination, perseverance and trial.

During the interactive assembly session, Magic Bob used illusions, captivating magic, audience participation, comedy, storytelling and music to illustrate that reading is fun.

Honoree Selected The Women for Brookhaven have named Maureen Mennella, a resident of Bay Shore, as the honoree for the 20th Anniversary event. The celebration will be held on Thursday, April 10th at 6:30 p.m. at the West Lake Inn, Patchogue.

Maureen Mennella, a 28 year veteran in the banking industry, is currently the Market Manager at People’s United Bank (PUB) in Bayport, managing six PUB branches in Suffolk County.

Maureen is the PresidentElect and Treasurer of the Patchogue Rotary Club. She was recently awarded Rotary’s highest honor, the Paul Harris Fellowship Award, for her outstanding contributions

to the community. She is on the Board of Directors for the Victim Information Bureau of Suffolk County.

As a volunteer for the Blue Point Salvation Army, she teaches financial literacy and advocates for their Angel Tree Program. She is also working with the Bayport Blue Point and Patchogue Medford School Districts, mentoring students in their Job Shadow and Career Day programs.

In 2007, Maureen joined the Advisory Council for the Medical Center. She has twice co-chaired the “Women for Brookhaven” event, and has served on the Hospital Ball committee for the past seven years. She has also been a member of the Black

Tie and Tournament of Tournaments committees.

Dignity On Stilts

For two weeks, beginning December 9th, fifth graders at Connetquot’s Cherokee Street Elementary School worked on their circus skills! Students, working with their physical education teachers and trainers from the Cirque du Jour organization, learn to work as clowns, jugglers, stilt walkers and masters of the Diablo Stick!

During this year’s circus week, Cherokee PE teacher Mr. Joseph Nelson experienced one of the most wonderful examples of dignity he had ever seen!

During one of the training sessions, one youngster expressed his frustration while

attempting to learn how to walk on stilts. The training sessions consisted of all 5th graders including those with special needs.

Three young ladies sensed this boy’s frustration, and went out of their way to lend their support, to make his ‘dream’ of stilt walking, a reality.

Payton, Ashley and Sierra worked together with Alex to give him the skills, and confidence, to walk on stilts for the December 20th performance! Mr. Nelson and Cherokee Principal Mrs. Bridgette Wilson recently recognized the three young ladies for their acts of love and compassion. These

youngsters went out of their way to be helpful to one of their classmates.

Their kindness, and consideration gave Alex the confidence he needed to take part in the annual Circus Show!

Their selfless acts of consideration earned them a special ‘Dignity’ Award from Mrs. Wilson, and a letter of commendation, a copy of which has been sent to compassionate entertainer Ellen DeGeneres!

Congratulations, and thank you, to Payton, Ashley and Sierra for your compassion and kindness towards one of your classmates.

SUPERVISOR OF THE YEAR - Connetquot Central School District’s Council of Administrators recently recognized and honored Dr. Mary Loesing, chairperson of the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) program as the 2014 Supervisor of the Year. Dr. Loesing, who also recently earned her Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Concordia University in Chicago, was congratulated by the council of Connetquot educators for her commitment and tireless efforts to improving and motivating CCSD students. The STEM program is designed to improve the technical learning development of students from K-College.

Blood Donations Needed

In the midst of an unprecedented string of winter storms, New York Blood Center is urgently asking donors to roll up their sleeves to replenish the community blood and platelet supply.

Dozens of blood drives have been canceled because of bad weather. Blood drives that are continuing have experienced greatly reduced attendance, while operations at NYBC’s many walk-in donor centers are similarly affected.

“I urge residents to donate to this vital cause,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said. “So many people depend on donations to survive serious illnesses or accidents. Giving blood is an easy way to help others in need.”

The supply of O-Negative blood – “universal donor” blood that can be transfused into anyone in a trauma situation – is now below the minimum emergency “safety level.”

Also, plateletsneeded for clotting- have only a 5-day shelf life and meeting the

needs of cancer patients and others who require this lifesaving blood component has been a challenge.

“While we’re confident in our ability to supply our partner hospitals, we’re still struggling with the effects of the snow and ice for the past two weeks, and worried about an even bigger hit this week,” said NYBC Vice President Rob Purvis. “It is critical that we all pitch in by donating blood to ensure that supplies aren’t further diminished in the days ahead.”

There is no substitute for human blood, with about one in seven hospital admissions requiring a blood transfusion. Blood is especially important for people with leukemia, other forms of cancer, and of course for trauma victims. With a limited shelf life, supplies must be continually replenished.

Three factors are combining together to prompt NYBC’s emergency declaration: 1. Many blood drives have been cancelled because of accumulated or predicted snowfall.

2. Many donors haven’t been able to make scheduled donation appointments due to the weather.

3. Hospital demand

for blood types – notably O-negative, the universal blood type because of its usefulness in trauma situations – remains high.

If you cannot donate but still wish to participate in bringing crucial blood products to patients in need, please ask someone to donate for you, or consider volunteering at a local blood drive. NYBC also offers special community service scholarships for students who organize community blood drives during summer months.

Literacy Lesson Academy Elementary School fourth-grade students in Carrie Almskog’s class collaborated with kindergarten students in Nancy Celentano’s class on a joint literacy project that culminated in a performance of The Wizard of Oz. As part of the unit, the students studied both the classic novel by L. Frank Baum and the play’s script, which had been adapted

by Ms. Celentano to meet state standards for English language arts and literacy.

The students compared and contrasted the two versions and documented their findings. As part of their reader’s theatre study, the students practiced reading with fluency and expression before auditioning for the roles they wished to embody during the performance.

They also learned about the

process of performing a play, as they studied choreography, scenery and stage directions.

At the end of the multiweek study, the two classes performed the play before audiences filled with proud family members and peers.

Honoring Black History

FIREMAN HONORED - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently joined several local officials at a ceremony honoring Nick Campson of the Sayville Fire Department. Mr. Campson has been a staple of the Sayville Fire Department for decades, and his years of experience have helped shape the careers of countless firefighters who have served under his tutelage.

Islip Town Board members continued the Town’s long-standing tradition of observing National Black History Month at a recent Black History celebration held in the Islip Town Board meeting room, where board members paid special tribute to five

individuals, who either live or work in Islip Town, who have made great strides in the advancement of African Americans.

The ceremony was led

by Councilman Anthony J. Senft, Jr., who was joined by fellow board members in acknowledging the many achievements of each

honoree. From professional musicians to dedicated educators to outstanding athletic leaders, this year’s honorees were all deserving of the prestigious award, and were presented with a customary crystal statue to celebrate their accomplishments.

Honored were: Reynard Burns for his contributions in the area of arts and education; Lisette Lors for Education; Mike Brown for Education; Judith JacksonFogah for Community Service; and Horace J. Mickle for Community Service.
