The Birthday Betta By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s here! It’s finally arrived!

The moment you all (well I and my Human) have been waiting for! My very first birthday in my bowl, celebrated this past weekend with my Human family. Who would’ve thought this day would come…

Of course, in Betta years, that probably makes me about 47. Not to mention the countless days… months… years… I spent languishing in that tiny Tupperware container they kept me in at the pet store. But, ever since February 16th, 2015, the day my Human adopted me, all has been well.

There was a party, with dinner, and even a few presents!

What does one buy a Betta, you ask? Well, there was the pre-Birthday/Christmas gift of a brand new tank – complete

with a filter and a light and everything – which my Human has yet to transfer me into… something about not wanting to “traumatize” me without consulting with the “pet experts” at the store first.

I haven’t received a scheduled moving date as of yet.

Speaking of, I’m still patiently waiting to be taken on that shopping spree I was promised back in August for my six-month birthday. All the sales that have come and gone… just think what fancy toys and plants I could have accumulated by now! I must have at least enough for a small castle saved away. And pretty gravel… and maybe a leafy hammock to sleep in… and a seashell to decorate…

Tiny brain, big dreams.

The one thing I didn’t get was a fishy friend to play with.

I don’t need anything fancy like me; perhaps just a small

shrimp or a snail to keep me company, and maybe vacuum my bowl now and then. Those long hours spent waiting for my Human to return home each day are awfully boring.

There are only so many laps a Betta can swim around his plant, only so much gravel to push from one corner to another.

Ah, but enough complaining. I’ve decided to turn over a new fin for my new year and focus on being positive and loving toward my Human, my Grammy and any other visitors who might like to visit and gaze upon my beauty. (Hey, I didn’t say I was going to take up modesty.)

‘Til next time, thanks to all the readers for their birthday greetings. And to my Human family, thank you for the best first birthday a Betta could hope to have.

Taking to the Stage Bayport-Blue Point High School student-actors showcased their theatrical talents during this year’s school musical – “The Pajama Game.”

The Tony Awardwinning show carried an energetic score that

provided the undertones for a comedic love story.

Students transported the audience back to a simpler time when a 7.5 cent pay increase sparked a union strike at a pajama factory. What followed was a comical clash of conflict

between management and labor, as well as unexpected relationship connections.

A predominately studentcomprised pit orchestra musically supported the performers throughout the production.

READING PEP RALLY - Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School students recently attended a reading-themed pep rally by Hip Pickles, a drumming entertainment group with engaging, high-energy songs about reading. Students had the opportunity to play drums, share why they enjoy reading and sing along with the Hip Pickles during a school-wide assembly. This program was part of a District initiative to promote reading as part of the district’s dedication to providing students with a high-quality education.

BEDTIME STORIES - Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School students recently invited their parents back to school to participate in an annual program called Parents As Reading Partners: Bedtime Stories, in which parents read classic children’s bedtime stories to the pajama-clad youngsters. In addition to parents, Edith L. Slocum Parent-Teacher Association members, teachers, librarians and administrators participated, joining students during the event for a bedtime snack and crafts. The purpose of this event was to encourage children to develop a lifelong love of reading and learning.

Saving the Planet Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School 5th grade “Proactive Recycling Rangers,” 9-10 years old, have been working on a project to learn more about their environment, and what they can do to protect it.

They recently shared

their new knowledge with 1st grade peers, demonstrating how to recycle plastic and papers and explaining how recycling helps protect the planet for the future.

The Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children (CFAC) recently awarded

a financial grant to help students and staff to recycle at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School.

“The Proactive Recycling Rangers” will help to collect materials from participating classrooms and sort them in the recycling center.

Wilderness Training Training for emergencies while hiking in the woods was offered by the Suffolk County Council (Boy Scouts of America)’s High Adventure Training team on Saturday, January 30th, at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. Seven local adult Scouting volunteers and one Boy Scout participated in the “Wilderness First

Aid Training” course.

“Wilderness and Remote First Aid” is supported by American Red Cross and the Boy Scouts of America.

Two trained Leaders are required for their Scout Troop or Venture Crew to participate in a high adventure camping and/or hiking trip.

This training is

mandatory for trips where normal support systems would cause delayed care of fractures, sprains, wounds and illnesses.

In addition, the more commonly experienced safety concerns, safety issues, and first aid were dealt with during the training session.

The “Wilderness First

Aid Training” course was instructed by High Adventure Committee member John Nicolellis and members of the course were Assistant Scoutmaster Richard Conzo, Assistant Scoutmaster Kevin Michaels, Assistant Scoutmaster Kevin Lawn and Scouting Dad Tom Bucci all of Troop 205 (Great

River), Life Scout Kieran Monaghan, Assistant Scoutmaster Michael Monaghan, Scoutmaster Brian Heinrichs all of Troop 433 (Middle Island), and Assistant Scoutmaster Anne Nakamoto Troop 427 (Setauket). They each received a certificate of qualification and a trained patch along with a an

instruction book.

“However,” Mr. Cross continued, “there was so much excitement from Ohana Surfboard Company that they placed Third for most enthusiastic firm.”

While the team was not one of the top six “businesses” to advance to the finals, Mr. Cross and his students recognized the invaluable lessons from their experiences developing, writing, and presenting a business plan.

“Although it is important to be competitive, it is not always about placing,” Mr. Cross added. “Placing for best something, like best brochure or logo, is winning on talent which is great, but placing for enthusiasm is a character trait and that made me proud as their facilitator. I watched the students walk out of the presentation with smiles, and that made

me delighted. I am proud of my students and their accomplishment as a first year firm.”

In the Fifth Annual Long Island Virtual Enterprises Business Plan Competition and Trade Fair held recently at Farmingdale State College, five Sayville High school students made a presentation for their virtual business, Ohana Surfboard Company, and four students ran the trade booth selling over $85,000 of merchandise.

There were more than 700 Long Island high school students, representing more than thirty schools showcasing their “virtual businesses” at the competition, but what distinguished the Sayville group of students who were representing a fledgling firm in its firstyear was their irrepressible energy and enthusiasm.

“Although, they did not place to move onto the next round,” explained Sayville Business teacher and firm’s facilitator, Mr. Chad Cross, who accompanied the nine students on the competition, “they received much praise by the judges for their presentation skills and

Woodhull Elementary School students in Phil Tamberino’s music classes are now able to individually browse school-owned music using their laptops while on the school’s private network.

The innovation was developed with the help of school information technology specialist Christopher Forget in order to provide a controlled environment

for students to explore high quality music while in school. Intermediate students have already used the library during lessons about specific genres or artists in music.

“It’s common for students to be able to choose what they read, in library or even in the classroom. Why shouldn’t they have the same opportunity in music?”

Mr. Tamberino asked. “It

makes them more excited about the activity, and they can interact with so much more music than if we had to listen to everything together as a class.”

Woodhull’s music library includes a variety of music spanning different time periods and world cultures, though Mr. Tamberino is able to restrict student access to specific selections depending on the lesson at hand.

Poetic Presentation Academy Street Elementary School fourthgraders had the chance to study poetry on a deeper level during a recent visit with English professor Daniel Linker.

Mr. Linker, the brother of fourth-grade teacher Carrie Almskog, spoke to students about a poem

they had read as part of their poetry unit. He began by doing a close reading of William Carlos Williams’ poem, “The Red Wheelbarrow.” He, along with the students, examined each line of the poem and discussed its significance and meaning.

as the students began to draw a more symbolic understanding of what originally appeared to be a very short and straightforward poem.

The students and teachers learned a great deal about analyzing poetry and enjoyed Mr. Linker’s presentation.

Scientists Compete perform heart transplants by finding the missing vowels for words in the patients charts. Work tables were set up with stainless steel surgical trays that contained cardboard squares of the vowels needed during surgery.Also, as a centerpiece on each work table was a specific ‘patient’ complete with red-colored blood packs marked as positive and negative types A, B, O. Projected on the SmartBoard at the front of the classroom were the common vowels, A,E, I, O, U for the ‘surgeons’ to use as a reference.

To make things more exciting, the surgeons used tweezers to pick up the vowel and place it in the c-v-c word on the patient’s chart. “We didn’t want to get any vowel blood on us,” Mrs. Georges explained. “Each kinder-doctor matched the vowel by using their tapping out strategies and picture clues to help identify the missing

vowels and fixed the word. Later, they wrote their findings on their Patient Chart!”

Like many operating rooms, the surgeons conferred with their colleagues amid a buzz of ‘professional’ chatter, while the Head of Surgery, Dr. Georges offered encouragement and reminders. During the procedures, invited guests Principal Dr. Lisa Ihne and Mrs. Geraldine Batterberry observed.

While the good news is that all the patients survived the day in surgery, the best news is that all the kinderdocs were tremendously entertained by the activity, thanks to the energizing enthusiasm and creativity of their teacher Mrs. Georges, as assisted by SRP Mrs. Roseann Delaney.

Most importantly, it was a lesson these Kindergarteners will not soon forget. Who knows?

It may have inspired future surgeons too!

To be successfully literate requires the skills for forming words from alphabetic symbols.

Those who study the English language know that, generally speaking, vowels are the heart of words. Without a vowel, it is not considered a word.

Studying about the importance of vowels, Mrs. Jeannette Georges’ Cherry Avenue Kindergarten students in Sayville had been learning the basic anatomy of English words, practicing on consonant-vowelconsonant words as they prepared for a special activity - the Vowel Hospital.

On the day of the Vowel Hospital activity, Room 102 was transformed into an Operating Theatre.

The eager students were dressed as surgeons with masks, hats, lab coats, and gloves, and ready to

Commander to be Honored Ann Peltier, SN, of Patchogue became commander of the United States Power Squadrons, District 3 (Long Island) at the Melville Marriott on Saturday, March 14th.

Ann calls her watch and the 16 local squadron commanders within D3 “The Pearls.” Ann has achieved the grade of Senior Navigator, the highest squadron grade

possible, indicating that she has successfully passed all available advanced grade and elective courses covering every aspect of navigation and seamanship.

Ann was born in Queens, New York and has been a first and fourth grade teacher in Nassau County, New York. She has been a member of the Oyster Bay Sail and Power Squadron,

Burnside, the Owner and Executive Director of Terry’s Angel Learning Academy and Daycare Services.

These four individuals were nominated to receive a Black History Month award for having gone above and beyond to better the Town of Islip community.
