Bayport-Blue Point School District students at Academy Street, Bayport Elementary and Sylvan Avenue schools are making an effort to be inclusive, despite other students’ differences. On Jan. 28, the students celebrated Rock Your Socks Day and wore

mismatched and colorful socks to mark the event before jumping feet first into February.

Students each decorated a paper cutout of a sock, which were hung as garlands across the hallways.

The Connetquot High School varsity cheer team has had an extremely successful season thus far, under the direction of coaches Kelly Unterweiser and Kaitlyn Pfaltz.

In addition to being named one of Newsday’s Top 10 Cheerleading Teams on Long Island, as published in the newspaper’s Jan. 9 edition, the team placed second at the Universal Cheerleaders Association Empire Regional Championship, receiving the highest score out of all Suffolk County teams in their combined division, including Division 1 and Division 2 schools. Most recently,

the team placed first and third in the Large Varsity Division, combined with D1 and D2 schools, at the Section XI varsity competition.

“This is a particularly impressive year in that 11 of 19 of the team’s athletes are competing for the first time at the varsity level and at in-person events for Section XI and UCA,” Ms. Unterweiser said.

The Connetquot cheer team has proved to be one of the county’s top teams for the last couple of years. The team qualified for the Suffolk County Championship each year since 2017 and were UCA Regionals Divisional

Champions in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Ms. Unterweiser also acknowledges that the team’s success is largely due to very talented athletes who lead the team, including the following: -Abigail Molter (senior) – 5-year member, back spot, Section XI AllDivision recipient -Kayla Unterweiser (junior) – 5-year member, flyer, two-time Section XI All-Division recipient, Section XI All-County recipient and All-Long Island 2nd Team recipient -Payton Rhodes (junior) – 4-year member, back spot, fall season MVP

Connetquot Boys’ Varsity Basketball Falls Connetquot School District To Playoff Bound Newfield HS Celebrates 52 Years Of Dedication

On February 2nd Connetquot School District Superintendent Dr. Lynda G. Adams, members of the district Board of Education and athletic director Peter Melore welcomed two hundred teachers, parents, students, athletes, coaches, family and friends to celebrate the career of Joseph Maniaci.

Dr. Adams, Pete Melore and Philip Maniaci took turns addressing Maniaci’s accomplishments which began as a student in 1966, the beginning of his teaching career in 1970, retirement and the beginning of a new passion as district photographer in 2007. For the last 15 years Maniaci could be seen on the sidelines carrying his Nikon camera covering all Connetquot sports, and classroom activities.

February 2nd was an opportunity for the community to thank him for his continued loyalty and dedication to the children of the Connetquot school district. Maniaci has often said that he “… was born to make other people look good,” and Connetquot parents and coaches can attest to his dedication to show the positive side of Connetquot life.

A Proclamation from the Connetquot Board of Education, along with a Citation from Islip Town Supervisor Angie M. Carpenter were presented to Maniaci by Dr. Adams.

A portrait of Maniaci and his trusty Nikon was on display during Wednesday’s celebration. The portrait will hang in the corridor leading to the entrance of Connetquot’s ‘new’

gymnasium.

Congratulations and thank you to Mr. Maniaci for his efforts on behalf of the children of Connetquot.

At the conclusion of the ceremony Maniaci thanked everyone who helped organize this ‘special night’.

He said, “… but now I’d like to say thank you to all the wonderful students, athletes, teachers and coaches who have brought such joy to my life.” He ended his remarks by saying, “Finally and most importantly, thank you to the parents who gave me the opportunity to work with their children, and the chance to tell the community about the positive side of Connetquot life.” Photos courtesy of

The Connetquot HS boys’ varsity basketball team fell to playoff-bound Newfield HS at home, on February 2nd.

Connetquot kept the score close early, but Newfield’s 23-9 burst in the third quarter put the game out of reach for the T-birds.

Connetquot’s roster numbers 8 healthy players due to illness and injuries at this point in the season.

Connetquot’s scorers against Newfield were Catalano (9), Pinero (8), Youmans (8), Maniaci (6) and Moore (6). Newfield improved to 10-8 while the T-birds are 2-11 in Suffolk league II. Pinero scored two 3-point baskets, while Catalano scored one.

The team’s only senior, Connetquot Central School Ryan Waring, was injured District/Joseph Maniaci recently and is also out for the season.

Determined to counter the high prices of cell culture, Gene “developed a Low-Cost CO2 Vessel (LCCV) for less than $20 to carry out cell culture. Rather than using a CO2 tank, the LCCV uses a chemical reaction to produce CO2 for growing cells within the vessel.” In addition, the Low-Cost CO2 Vessel (LCCV) Gene developed “can be made of readily available materials. The inexpensive nature of the LCCV would allow more people to carry out cell culture, especially high schoolers. Exposing high school students to handson science experiments will likely engage students and promote them to pursue science.”

As important and ingenious his work might be, the scientific research was only the first part of process. To earn a semifinalist standing in the Regeneron Science Talent Search, Gene had to communicate his findings by completing and submitting an application detailing his research project. The set of specific criteria included Tweeting about the project.

The ability to grow organs in tissue culture and having them available on-demand would be a boon to society, giving patients access to organ transplants through regenerative medicine.”

But for now, having been named semifinalist, is sure to create more research opportunities for this outstanding young man.

On January 6th, when the semifinalists were named, Gene Weng was listed among the elite group. Nationwide, there were 300 students selected.
