Simple Ways To Be Good To Yourself Years ago, I was roaming the aisles of Costco and picked up a book, titled, 101 Simple Ways to Be Good To Yourself by Donna Watson Ph.D. I’ve been re-reading it ever since. As we grow older and our responsibilities mount, we lose touch with our own needs. Children, spouses, jobs (second jobs), mortgages, car payments, friends in need…the list is endless. The weekdays bleed into each other in a frenetic blur, and on weekends we can barely catch up on sleep, catch our breath and take the kids to their weekend activities. Sometimes “adulting” can make you want to cry “Uncle.” Most likely, you’re running on fumes. If your battle cry of the moment is, “Stop the ride, I wanna get off!” a few small adjustments can recharge a burnt out battery.

There are plenty of simple ways to be good to you, which will, in turn, help you be good to others.

BREATHE. Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, stop right there and breathe. Breathe out all of the air in your body through your mouth. Count to four and

then breathe in through your nose, filling up your abdomen (not your chest). Hold for four seconds. Then, slowly let the air leak out through your mouth as your belly deflates. Repeat.

LAUGH. Make YouTube your friend. I personally love the television show, All In The Family. When I need a good laugh, I cue up a full episode on YouTube and laugh myself silly.

Laughing is good for the soul.

LISTEN. Nothing soothes me like Jazz music. Did you know that brain surgeons play their favorite music in the operating room to take the pressure off? Sometimes, in order to do your best, you have to actually place your attention elsewhere to remain centered and focused.

WALK. Take a walk in nature.

Walk briskly, look at the grass, the trees and the sky. Breathe in the crisp air, feel your body move and your heart rate slightly increase.

Feel your muscles working to move your body.

SPEND TIME WITH ANIMALS. If you have a dog or a cat, spend time cuddling and petting your

animal companion. Really take in their energy. If you don’t live with any animals, consider spending time at a dog park to be around animals, or at a local horse stable.

Spending time around animals is healing.

TAKE A LESSON. You don’t have to make a commitment, time-wise or financially. You can simply take a lesson or two for fun. It will bring a sense of play and adventure to your life. Do it by yourself, or bring a friend or family member along.

TAKE A MINI-BREAK. Look for Groupons or off-season deals for short weekend getaways that are within driving distance, and change your environment for 48 hours...or 24 hours if you must.

MASSAGE. Everywhere you go now, there are massage and nail spas. Carve out 30 minutes and go for a shoulder rub or a relaxing foot rub... just because.

These are just a few of the simple things you can do to be good to yourself. Being good to yourself is like saving money in the bank. You can then spread the wealth to the ones you love.

Easy Vegan Pasta Bolognese

What You Will Need

1/2 cup diced portobello mushrooms 1/2 cup sweet green peas 1 24 oz. jar of Ragu Traditional Pasta Sauce (no sugar added variety) 2 tablespoons red wine 1 pinch of salt 1 pinch of black pepper 1 sprinkle of turmeric 1/4 package of Smart Ground meatless soy crumbles 2 heaping tablespoons dairy-free butter substitute 1 box of your favorite pasta

How To Make It Melt butter substitute in a large or medium sized skillet and add in Smart Ground soy crumbles. Mash up and turn crumbles as they brown (about 4 minutes). Turn off heat and set aside.

Pour jar of pasta sauce into a medium or large saucepan, turn on medium heat and stir in diced mushrooms and cooked soy crumbles. Let sauce simmer and then add in tumeric, salt, pepper and red wine; stire altogether, turn heat to low and cover tightly to re-simmer.

Boil water and cook pasta for approximately 10 minutes until al dente. (soft, but slightly firm). Rinse and drain pasta and set aside.

Steam peas in the microwave or 2-3 minutes and stir peas into sauce.

Remove covered sauce from heat.

Plate pasta, pour sauce over pasta and enjoy!

Mastic/Shirley Conservation Legislation Passed In January, a local law to preserve open space in the Mastic/Shirley conservation area was signed into law. This resolution will protect flood prone areas against future flooding and storm damage by creating more open space within the designated conservation zone. “This is a great step forward for the Tri-Hamlet community.” stated Legislator Sunderman “Superstorm Sandy devastated our area and this resolution will help to alleviate these problems in the future.”

This resolution specifically addressed instances where Suffolk County acquires property because of failure to pay taxes. If these acquired properties are within the Mastic/Shirley Conservation area as identified by the Suffolk County Master Plan, these properties will not be sold at auctions but rather preserved. If there are structures on these properties, they will be demolished and the property will be

rehabilitated, returning it to open space in an effort to restore the coastal marshes.

Since the recession of 2009 and then later the devastation that was caused

by Superstorm Sandy, there is a proliferation of zombie properties throughout all of Suffolk County. This resolution is one way in which Legislator Sunderman is addressing the issue of vacant derelict houses, while also preserving open space within a designated Mastic/ Shirley conservation zone.

Legislator Sunderman worked diligently alongside the Town of Brookhaven to develop an Inter-Municipal Agreement (IMA) to deal with the demolition of structures on improved parcels. Through this IMA, if the acquired property has a structure, the Town of Brookhaven has agreed to work with Suffolk County to perform the demolition.

“This is another great example of multiple levels of Government coming together to work in the best interests of our constituents,” said

Sunderman.

There are many areas within the Mastic Beach and Shirley communities in low lying wetlands with high water tables that have been built upon in the past. During times of severe weather, such as Superstorm Sandy or more recent nor’easters, serious flooding has occurred within these areas of the community.

Past development in the wetlands prevents the tidal marshes from acting as a natural sponge and soaking up the excess water causing flooding to many properties. This resolution seeks to protect the low lying areas to help restore the wetlands to open space so they can once again act as functional marshes.

“I would like to thank my fellow Legislators, the County Executive, and the Town of Brookhaven for their support of this important legislation.

This is a step in the right direction to protect my community from future flooding.” said Legislator Sunderman.

Creative Expressions CLEANING LOCAL MARINA - Bellport High School students braced the cold weather to clean up the Bellport Village Marina, also known as “The Dock,” after a winter storm partially flooded the location. The activity was sponsored by the Key Club under the direction of co-advisers Lori Dougherty and Meredith McCarthy. The student-volunteers collected four large trash bags of paper and plastic debris to assist in preserving the local bay area, and to prevent a negative impact on the ecosystem.

The Sayville Garden Club recently gave Beautification Awards to three area homes for their lovely gardens. Winners included are the Stallones on Benson Avenue in Sayville, Christine Cannon on Brook Street in West Sayville, and the Batterberry garden on Candee Avenue in Sayville.

These awards are some of the many service projects that the Club does each year. Others include creating holiday decorations for the Connetquot, Sayville and Bayport-Blue Point

libraries, and helping decorate the Manor House for the Annual Christmas Tour at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum in Great River and the Roosevelt Estate for their Holiday Open House.

The Club maintains a vegetable garden at the Roosevelt Estate and donates the produce to area organizations. It takes care of the 9-11 Memorial Garden near Brown’s River and the Herb Garden at the Sayville Historical Society.

Members plant and weed gardens at Sparrow Park and the Gillette House.

The Club hosts flower shows, an Annual Luncheon, and a Garden Tour which are all open to the public. High school seniors with interests in ecology and related topics are recognized each year with college scholarships.

These are just some of the Club’s activities.

The Club welcomes new members who would be interested in learning more about flowers, gardening, and Long Island ecology, as well as people who might like to help with these neighborhood projects.

February’s Charity of the Month is: Paws of War

“Helping Both Ends of The Leash” Paws of War is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military Veterans who suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each Veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love that only a companion animal can bring! Since 2014, Paws of War has supported over 100 Veterans with service dogs rescued from kill shelters.

The Paws of War Service Dog Program relies heavily on the support of their community and volunteers. Through this program they are able to provide service dogs and their training to Veterans in need at no cost, truly providing them with a miracle! A service dog can help combat the daily symptoms of PTSD. They are trained to pick up stress signals and intervene with their owner to direct their focus back to a positive environment. They can also greatly increase the quality of life for someone suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury. Paws of War trains service dogs to combat the daily issues that someone suffering from TBI has.

Each service dog given out is intensely trained before handed off to the Veteran.

The lives of many American Heroes have been changed forever because of what this organization has done for them!

Below is a list of more services that Paws of War offers to Veterans in addition to their Service Dog Program: •

Therapy Dog Program - This is a volunteer based program in which certified Therapy Dogs are brought to visit individuals that would benefit from a dog, but unfortunately cannot have one at the time being.

War Torn Pups Program - This program has brought back dogs from Afghanistan, Syria and Jordan that Service Members have found while out on tour.

Community Education Program - This program allows Paws of War to work with members of their local community.

Through this program, they are able to provide a direct connection between Veterans and the younger population.

Vets to Vets Medical RV - This mobile RV provides certain medical services for service animals at no cost to Veterans!

Paws of War is growing and has been recognized by national leaders, national press and some of the larger sporting franchises have even partnered with them to sponsor a dog. The men and women that this organization provides services for have dedicated their lives to serving our great country, and Paws of War strives to help them in every way possible!

Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: Patchogue Rotary Animal Assisted Therapy www.PRAATINC.org

PRAAT is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that was incorporated in 1993 as a community

service project of the Patchogue Rotary Club. Veterinarian Dr. David Roy Hensen founded this

organization with a belief in the therapeutic potential of dogs! PRAAT screens, trains and eval-

uates all dog-handler teams (the volunteer and their dog). Upon a successful completion of the

PRAAT dog-handler team training, teams become eligible to make visits at over 150 of their contracted and insured facilities across Long Island. PRAAT also runs a Doggie Reading Club. This

program is designed to encourage children to improve confidence with their reading skills, while

Sayville Players’ Winter Show transformative “star-stuff” of its enthusiastic company for its magic.

Here we first meet the inchoate characters of Captain Hook, the Lost Boys, and Tink before

their destinies give them legendary shape. With great expectation, we watch the orphan without a name become the eternal boy, known as Peter Pan. Although it is no easy

task to take the very cheeky British humor and deliver it to an American audience for laughs, the Sayville Players (in both casts) had enthusiasm in abundance; the slapstick comedy with

undertones of poignancy made for entertaining theater.

While the performances by the three unchanging leads: Hunter Caiazzo (Peter), Aidan Deverna

(Smee), and Alexander Pittari (Stache) were outstanding, there were no small parts in both praiseworthy supporting casts.

Super Readers To celebrate the completion of the second unit of their reader’s workshop, students enrolled in Kristyn Lineman’s kindergarten class at Idle Hour Elementary School shared their “super” reading abilities with the school’s faculty and staff members.

their favorite superheroes such as Captain America, The Flash, Batman and Wonder Woman, the young students were split up into groups to showcase their superior reading abilities with the invited guests.
