Greeting cards are popular ways to express love and affection on Valentine’s Day. However, those looking to say “I love you” and much more in a creative way may want to harken back to a tradition that is several centuries old.

Purse puzzles were once an innovative way to send notes and illustrations and express other sentiments.

Purse puzzles became popular around 1720 and remained so until roughly 1840. The puzzles consisted of a sheet of paper folded into smaller parts. When unfolded, the purse puzzle would reveal several messages and hand-drawn art.

In the 19th century, purse puzzles were a clever way for lovers to send love notes on Valentine’s Day or other times of the year. Purse puzzles were a form of paper art, similar to origami.

Valentine’s celebrants can rekindle the magic of purse puzzles to add creative flair to this year’s celebrations.

They can be made easily with tutorials found on websites such as Snapguide. com (https://snapguide. com/guides/make-puzzlepurses/). The finished puzzle will take a square shape and open up like a pinwheel until the full sheet of paper is revealed.

The works of six Sayville photography students—Emma Clark, Olivia Colon, Justin Doucet, Victoria Earvolino, Sarah Lettieri, and Matthew Zender—were recently accepted into the 13th Annual High School Art Competition Virtual Showcase, sponsored by Suffolk County Community College. Art Department Chairperson Deb Urso, who teaches the High School’s Studio In Photography class, also a Farmingdale University accredited course, expressed her excitement for these students. The virtual exhibition will run through February 25th.

Dr. Hardoon is a graduate of Stony Brook University where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Arts with a Minor in

Isaac Hardoon, DO Biology. He obtained his Doctor of Osteopathy from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his internship and residency in the Department of Medicine at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. Dr. Hardoon completed his fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, and for the past 3.5 years was a Palliative Care Attending Physician and serves as Assistant Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein School of Medicine.

Select Openings Remain In Connetquot UPK Program For 2020-2021 A select number of openings remain in the Connetquot Central School District’s free Universal Pre-K program for the 2020-2021 school year. The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon.

Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon.

From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers.

In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you.

The BBCC’s premier program is titled Lend a Helping Hand (LAHH). Since its inception in 1996, this unique patient service program provides much needed stress relief for breast cancer patients currently in treatment, as well as their families confronting diagnosis and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Later on, the BBCC expanded the LAHH program to include Babylon Township women undergoing treatment for all types of gynecological cancers.

Some of the services this program offers include house cleaning, transportation to/from medical appointments, financial

assistance, child care, massage therapy, meal preparation and more. If you or someone you know can benefit from the LAHH program, please visit the BBCC’s website for more information and to fill out the LAHH Application.

The BBCC has multiple upcoming events that they would like everyone to know about, anyone can join!

The Care Behind Your Care: This is a virtual webinar that will take place on February 11th at 6pm. Physicians from The Cancer Institute at Good Samaritan Hospital will host a “mock tumor board”, exhibiting the interdisciplinary approach to patient care. $20 per person includes a sherpa lined throw and tote bag!

Online Psychic Night: Join others for a gallery style reading as Georgia Rose channels messages from the other side! This will be a virtual event on February 19th at 7pm. Registration is $20 and those who will attend have the opportunity to partake in a raffle with great prizes!

Scavenger Hunt Bingo: Play 5 rounds of Bingo from home! This virtual event is only $10 per person, which includes your first Bingo card (extra cards are $5 each).

There is lots of fun to be had in this unique experinece on February 25th at 7:15pm.

Kings Park Artist Tracy Tekverk Featured at Apple Bank Exhibition through April 9, 2021 Smithtown Township Arts Council is pleased to announce that the works of artist Tracy Tekverk will be on view through April 9, 2021 at Apple Bank, 91 Route 111, Smithtown.

element of peacefulness to her work. Tracy credits her Native American ancestors for being deeply inspired by nature.

Tracy expresses herself through many different mediums, having studied fine art and commercial photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology. She has also

taken up sculpture, and now runs an artisanal soap company, Cedar and Bennet, from her home.

“It is important for me to constantly learn in creating my artwork, while still giving myself the creative license necessary to form a compelling piece.
