Be Mindful of Microaggressions

I was heartbroken to read that Empire star Jussie Smollett had been viciously attacked in Chicago in what was allegedly a racist and homophobic hate crime. The assailants allegedly shouted, “This is MAGA Country!” during the attack. I will opt not to go into politics, instead sticking to the human side of the issue at hand.

I have never understood unprovoked anger and hatred toward another. I can only conclude that it comes from within the perpetrator. As the late Dr. Wayne Dyer said, “When you squeeze an orange, orange juice is what comes out because that’s what’s inside. When someone squeezes you, that is, puts pressure on you, whatever comes out of you is what’s inside. And if you don’t like what’s inside, you

oversimplification of the complexity of human behavioral impulses, but one thing we can all do is be cognizant of daily microaggressions that add negative energy to the collective consciousness. Together, we can raise the vibration of this earth.

Discriminatory jokes and offhand sarcastic quips about people’s gender, race, religion, ethnicity or sexual orientation are not harmless. They add to a collective hostility towards specific groups of people. Harmful language can also embolden people who are living in a state of fear and ignorance to commit egregious acts of hate against others. In addition, our children hear it, our grandchildren hear it, our friends and co-workers hear it. With each word we speak, we possess the power to either poison or heal a new generation of human beings.

Going forward, when someone in your company talks about another group of people with discriminatory and mean spirited

the choice to remove yourself from the conversation, gently re-direct the subject, or say, “I’m sorry, but I don’t think it’s funny to dehumanize people who are different from you. Please refrain from using that language in my presence.” Or, do as Joel Osteen would do. Point to your ears and say, “Sorry, but these are not garbage cans.”

I understand that we are not always in a position to create a teachable moment, but you can certainly, gracefully, remove yourself from the conversation. As we have all witnessed, words can cause harm, and unfortunately, negative words can translate into negative actions if spoken to the wrong people.

I pray for Jussie Smollett’s healing, and I pray that this incident serves as a landmark.

When my son was about four years old, one of his favorite books was a children’s book titled, Words Are Not For Hurting. The concept is so simple, and as adults we often forget. Let’s try to remember.

Deepak Chopra: a Journey Into Consciousness

Dr. Deepak Chopra is a traditionally trained physician who emerged onto the American medical scene in the eighties, preaching and practicing medicine based on the eastern principals of healing the whole person. One of the first public figures to speak about Quantum Physics, the mind/body connection and the health benefits of meditation, it seems times have finally caught up with the renowned health and wellness guru.

In this conversation, we discuss everything from how meditation effects your overall physiology, to how the human spirit and brain converage and the essence of God.

It’s a field where there is creativity, and it’s a field where there is something called observer effect. The means intention orchestrated fulfillment. It’s a state of consciousness. When consciousness is without thought content, then everything is unified.

Allison Kugel: Let’s talk about meditation. You explain meditation as achieving the space that exists between our thoughts. Can you explain this?

Deepak Chopra: Well, if you’re in love then time doesn’t exist. If you’re having a good time, it flies. If you’re having deadlines then you start to think, “I’m running out of time.” If you’re bored you say, “Time is dragging.” If you’re in a very anxious situation, then time takes forever. Time is the way we measure our experience. In the deeper domains where there is unity

Allison Kugel: What can be achieved while in this state of discontinuity?

Deepak Chopra: Complete silence in the mind and therefore complete silence in the body as well; a state of unity consciousness. What separates you from others is your individual mind that manifests as your personal ego. So if you take that out of the way, there is nothing that separates you from anything else in existence. Now we know from even fundamental particle physics that the space between subatomic particles, or what you call the discontinuity, is a

consciousness, time doesn’t exist.

Time is the movement of thought.

It separates the observer from the observed when in the deepest reality, the observer and the observed, the seer and the scenery, the lover and the beloved… they’re all the same consciousness.

Allison Kugel: How do you determine, according to your understanding, what you would refer to as the soul or spirit, and the brain? In other words, when that inner voice speaks to us or when we are having certain thoughts or feelings, what is coming from our soul and what is coming from our brain?

Deepak Chopra: Everything comes from the soul. The brain is an instrument. All your fears, all your anxieties, all your phobias, all your imagination, all your fantasies, all your desires, your creativity, your insight, your intuition, your inspiration, your conflicts… the soul is a place of extreme opposites. It’s a place of ambiguity, a place of uncertainty, and a place of contradiction and paradox.

The brain is just the instrument which orchestrates what your soul is. Your soul is evolving. It starts from a place

Allison Kugel: If you take somebody like a mental health practitioner, and you were to bring up the topics of bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression and phobias; they would argue that it comes from chemical reactions taking place in the brain.

Do you disagree?

Deepak Chopra: Well, if I am listening to Beethoven on my radio and my radio is damaged, I won’t be able to hear Beethoven until I fix the radio. They’re right. You have to fix the instrument. But the fault of the instrument is not a reflection of the user of the instrument.

Allison Kugel: Is it fair to say that you are more of a spiritual student as opposed to someone who adheres to any one particular religion?

Deepak Chopra: It’s fair to say that I try to see spirituality in the teachings of great wisdom traditions. I try to find the spirituality and the universal insights in the teachings of great prophets… of those people that we call “enlightened.” So, for me there is no difference between the consciousness of, say, Jesus Christ and the consciousness of Buddha.

That’s why I think spirituality is the biggest threat to religion.

Allison Kugel: How do you define G-d?

Deepak Chopra: I think the best definition of God is that God is a mystery. [It’s] the mystery of existence, the mystery of life, the mystery of the universe. As we get closer to this mystery, then we experience love, we experience compassion, we experience creativity, we experience intelligence, we experience joy, we experience loss of fear and loss of fear of even death.

We experience inspiration, insight, intuition, imagination. Those are the things that bespeak of the mystery of our own existence. I would say that as soon as you try to conceptualize this mystery, say like a dead white man in the sky, then you lose the essence of the mystery. The moment you conceptualize it, then you limit it to your concept. If God is infinite then God cannot be conceptualized, just like infinity cannot be conceptualized.

I would say God is also the source of space, time, energy, information and everything else that exists in the universe. The only definition that’s valid is that God is infinite possibilities.

Allison Kugel: Talk about reversing the aging process and what you’ve mentioned in the past about reversing it to the point where you can make yourself, biologically speaking, fifteen years younger or fifteen years older than your chronological age.

Deepak Chopra: Your biology is an expression of what’s happening in consciousness. The fastest growing segment of the American population right now is over the age of ninety, and in many parts of the world, over the age of one hundred. A lot of that has to do with better nutrition, better lifestyle and better living conditions.

That we’re not dying of smallpox or heatstroke or frostbite, and also because our nutritional status is such that our immune systems are healthy.

But knowing that, we also know that if somebody is really abusing their body physically and emotionally; they are burned out and they smoke two packs of cigarettes a day and take drugs and alcohol and their relationships are really messed up, they could be biologically forty-five even though they’re chronologically twenty-five.

The biological markers reflect a much older biology than their chronological years would suggest. Similarly, if you have somebody who is sixtyfive or older but they are physically and emotionally fit, then their biological markers could be much younger. Things like blood pressure, bone density, body temperature regulation, metabolic rate, fat content, cardiovascular conditioning, cholesterol, muscle mass, the strength of muscles, sugar tolerance, sex hormones, hearing, vision, skin thickness, immune function… they could be all reflective of a much

younger age. The human body is a function of, literally, all the forces of nature. If you understand that these forces of nature are an expression of your own consciousness, then you can reverse these forces of nature.

Allison Kugel: Are any mainstream medical institutions asking for your your input?

Deepak Chopra: Not advice, but definitely for education. We have programs that we offer to medical institutions and also people who take our courses (at The Chopra Center).

Deepak Chopra: The space between our conscious thoughts is referred to as a discontinuity. This is the ground of our existence, and more and more it’s being recognized by a few scientists, that the essential nature of everything is a discontinuity.

When you look at a table or a tree or a plant or a piece of rock, they too are made up of atoms. The atoms are subatomic particles. The subatomic particles emerge out of something and then disappear into the same place. A few scientists are beginning to recognize that even though everything appears physical to us and our senses, at the most fundamental level of creation it’s a vibration. It’s something that is going on and off.

The space between the two “ons” of every vibration is a discontinuity.

That might be the ultimate ground of everything in the universe. That means that the discontinuity that exists between your thoughts is the ground of, not only your existence, but the ground of all existence. In other words, the consciousness that is at the background of your thoughts is the same consciousness which is at the background of all the intelligent activity of the whole universe.

Combine: 1 cup of barley (whole grain or egg) 1 can of mushrooms 1 can of chicken broth 1 stick of butter 1 package of onion soup mix Mix the barley, soup mix, chicken broth and mushrooms in an oven safe dish.

Quarter the stick of butter and add to each corner of the dish. Cover and bake in the oven at 375 degrees for 45 minutes. Remove from oven, stir, and add 1 cup of cold water. Stir again.

Re-cover and place back in the oven for 30 minutes at 375 degrees. Let cool and enjoy!

February’s Charity of the Month is: Paws of War

“Helping Both Ends of The Leash” our Veterans from all who were there. This organization is “the real deal” and truly are there to help others.

In an effort to help bring dogs back home from overseas, Paws of War runs a program called Worn Torn Pups. This program provides financial support to reunite military personnel with the stray animals they found and bonded with while at war. Donations to this program helps with costs that include vaccines, medial treatment, transportation and more. This organization feels that “while the financial investment is high...the relief, comfort and joy this program provides soldiers is immeasurable.”

Paws of War relies heavily on donations and devoted volunteers to continue providing the services they offer. Paws of War is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military Veterans who suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each Veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love that only a companion animal can bring! Since 2014, Paws of War has supported over 100 Veterans with service dogs rescued from kill shelters.

In addition, this organization runs a variety of other programs to help Veterans in need.

The work of their Service Dog Program relies heavily on the support of their community and volunteers. They provide service dogs and their training to Veterans in need at no cost, truly providing them with a miracle! A service dog can help combat the daily symptoms of PTSD. They are trained to pick up stress signals and intervene with their owner to direct their focus back to a positive environment. Each service dog given out is intensely trained before handed off to the Veteran.

The lives of many American Heros have been changed forever because of what this organization has done for them. Co-Founder Robert Misseri delighted me with a success story of a local Long Island Veteran who had been on 9 medicines and secluded himself from his wife and children...he was suffering.

After receiving a service dog, he was able to get off of all of his medicines, he took his family on a camping trip and he now attends all family functions! If you want to inquire about recieving help from Paws of War, don’t hesitate to reach out to them!

In addition to providing Veterans with a service dog, Paws of War opened their Vets to Vets Mobile Animal Clinic after they realized the crucial need for veterinary care for the pets of Veterans and first responders living with disabilities! This is the first of its kind and is manned by volunteers, veterinarians, vet techs, as well as some staff. This mobile RV provides free services, such as wellness checks, grooming, vaccinations, dental procedures and more to our hero’s companions.

After visiting the Paws of War’s main office and training facility, located at 127 Smithtown Blvd in Nesconset, I couldn’t help but feel a sincere love for and desire to help

Sachem Public Library has been voted the best library on Long Island by Best of Long Island for the 5th year in a row. Best of Long Island is sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union, with the goal of determining favorite businesses, schools, hospitals and people of residents of Long Island.

The Library is home to not only an extensive and comprehensive book collection, children’s area, and technology center but it also provides an array of different events that engage community members of all ages. With events such as meditation, quilting, card games, book clubs and various foreign language events anyone is sure to find something that interests them. In addition to an extensive events calendar the Library is home to Tend Coffee Café where visitors can enjoy specialty coffees by a fire while they read, browse or stop in for an event. Sachem Library aims to provide immeasurable

support to their community, with the slogan “Inspire, Engage, Educate” they surely hit the mark. There is also a service for people that are unable to get to the Library on a regular basis, this service allows members of the community to have books, magazines, CDs and DVDs delivered right to their door.

Legislator Lindsay is honored to have the best library on Long Island in his district and believes that having a good library is paramount in the growth and prosperity of a community.

Library resources such as computers, fax machines, and job postings help those in search of employment, which is a cause that is important to Legislator Lindsay. “The enormous effort that is put in by the staff and volunteers at Sachem Public Library has exceeded all expectations of their community and I am extremely proud of their tremendous accomplishment,” said Legislator Lindsay. “Sachem

Accolades for Sachem Library

MAKING WISHES GROW - Dance Connection of Islip, as well as other local performers and dance companies, performed at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School in Hicksville, on Sunday, January 20th. The performance raised money which granted the wish of a child named Matthew from Huntington Station, NY through Make-AWish of Suffolk County. Matthew was referred to the Make-A-Wish Foundation® in 2015 when he was diagnosed with Langerhans Cell Histiocystosis, a rare cancer that causes LCH cells to build up in certain parts of the body, where they can damage tissue or form lesions.

To help keep his mind off of the treatments and procedures he goes through, Matthew enjoys learning about cars. His favorite movie is Disney Pixar’s Cars which is why when he was medically eligible for a wish come true, Matthew wished to visit the magical Walt Disney World Resorts and be one of the first guests to explore Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy. With the help of Making Wishes Grow, Matthew and his family plans to boarded their plane on January 26th. The performance featured Create Dance Center, the Dance Connection Performance Team, JAM Dance & Fitness, Trinity Dance Company, Milan Bailey, Sara Benjamin, Emily Chamberlain, Joel Feliciano, Students across each the Peer Education class familiar with their fellow Emily Hart-Lopez and many more. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced 30 Suffolk County Police Officers participated in a specialized weeklong training program designed to help officers address the needs of individuals suffering from mental illness. The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training program, conducted by the Institute for Police, Mental Health & Community Collaboration and paid for by a New York State Office of Mental Health grant, works to improve the way law enforcement and the community respond to people experiencing mental health crises.

“This specialized training program brings together all stakeholders to guarantee that our police officers have the tools necessary to effectively do their job,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “The skills that are developed will better assist those dealing with a mental health emergency and enhance public safety.”

“The Suffolk County Police Department is committed to continuing to ensure that our officers in the field are well-versed and highly trained in as many scenarios as possible, including those pertaining to mental health and crisis management situations,” said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart. “With the continuing goal of enhancing our community relations platform, this training ensures that our participating officers have the ability to efficiently act and communicate with our residents when needed most.”

Harnessing Imagination Fueled by creativity and collaborative inspiration, first-grade students in Kendra Bernagozzi’s class at Hiawatha Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District visited the building’s STEAM room to participate in several challenging hands-on activities with their classmates.

As an introduction to the STEAM room, student groups visited six stations that allowed their creativity to flourish.

Incorporating several basic design concepts, students built cup towers and structures with Legos, arranged pattern blocks, crafted three-dimensional paper sculptures and

worked with plastic gears.

As students rotated through each station, they were continuously encouraged to try their best, explore, ask questions and learn from the mistakes they made while working on each activity

Collaborative Reading Effort As a supplement to their literary studies, second- and fourth-grade students from Edward J. Bosti Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District recently worked on a collaborative reading activity in the school’s library.

After reading engaging stories in their classroom, fourth-grade students

from Linda Tabatchnick & Elizabeth Whitson’s classes met with second-graders from Diana Boyle’s class on to teach them about all of the important facts they learned.

“The students learned about authors Eric Carle, Steven Kellogg, Kevin Henkes, Mo Willems, Cynthia Rylant and Helen Lester,” said library media

specialist Annamarie Tongue. “Each student read several books by their author, and researched background information about each writer.”

Touchdown on Cancer Research Elementary-level students enrolled within the C-Quest program in the Connetquot Central School District were recently visited by local author and Connetquot High School graduate, Patrice Domozych, to hear about her children’s book, her love for writing and some tips on how to strengthen their own writing.

Mrs. Domozych’s book, “Hope is Here to Stay,” tells the story of her niece Lauren Loose’s battle with cancer, and her efforts to help others fighting the same illness. Using illustrations, a slide show presentation and her book, Mrs. Domozych talked about Lauren, now 21 years old, and the other children who face serious challenges in their lives.

As a special treat, the students were granted the opportunity to meet both Lauren and her mother Marianne Loose, when they visited the C-Quest class at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School on Jan. 9. Despite her illness, Lauren maintains a highly spirited attitude at all times, complete with a big smile on her face, and a radiating love for her Hollywood crush, Orlando Bloom, who she met a few years ago and remains close friends with to this day.

“We find inspiration from family, friends and the people we’ve met during this journey,” said Mrs. Loose. “When you’re put into a situation like ours, it’s important to focus on the steps which lay ahead, along with the

overwhelming support from the other parents and children who help lead us along the way.”

All proceeds from the book sales benefit the Lauren’s First and Goal Football Camp, which was founded in Lauren’s name and provides financial and emotional support for families whose children are affected by pediatric cancer.

Every first Sunday in June, hundreds of high schoollevel football players from around the country take part in the annual fundraiser in Pennsylvania, learning not only about football, but how to make a change for the better in the lives of others. To this day, more than a whopping $2 million has been raised toward the goal of finding a cure for Lauren’s disease.

At the Tuesday, December 18 General Meeting of the Suffolk

County Legislature, Legislator Sarah Anker presented Rohan with a proclamation.

“I congratulate Rohan on a job well done and thank him for teaching his peers the dangers of nicotine,” said Legislator Anker.

“The use of e-cigarettes has become rampant among teens and preteens,

causing them to become addicted to nicotine at an early age.”

The educational campaign invited elementary school students to create a Public Service Announcement (PSA) poster about the dangers and adverse effects of liquid nicotine on children and adults.

In an effort to preview some of the wonderful computer science and engineering and literacy initiatives taking place throughout the district, members of the Connetquot Central School Board of Education were recently invited to step into the learning taking place at Sycamore Elementary School.

While attending, the distinguished guests were joined by district administrators as they sat

down with kindergarten and third-grade students to learn about their journeys to become impressive writers and readers. The students are currently taking part in the Writers Workshop of the Units of Study in Writing Program, and the visitors saw firsthand how the students have strengthened their reading and writing skills so far this school year.

Additionally, with assistance from computer science and engineering

specialist Patrick Brennan, students showcased the skills they have amassed this school year while in the Innovation Labs.

The district’s recently implemented Innovation Labs serve as multipurpose spaces where students can practice engineering and programming activities at a young age, developing critical thinking, problem-solving and key communication skills.

“Crisis Intervention Training will give our police officers the tools and skill set that will enable them to do their job safely and effectively,” said Dr. James Tomarken, Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Services. “Research shows that CIT is associated with improved officer attitude and knowledge about mental illness.”

The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training program has become a nationally recognized model for safely and effectively assisting people with mental and substance use disorders.

CIT training consists of law enforcement, mental health providers and advocates, and emergency services personnel, who provide officers with the knowledge, skills and support necessary to de-

escalate situations and divert individuals suffering from mental illness from the criminal justice system when appropriate.

The program is built on robust partnerships between law enforcement, mental health providers and individuals and families affected by mental illness. The goals of the CIT program is to reduce the number of arrests of individuals with mental illnesses, to help divert these individuals to treatment programs or support services, and to eliminate hostile incidents between police officers and individuals suffering from mental illness.

The week long training program provided to the Suffolk County Police Department covered a variety of topics including communication and deescalation, indicators of

emotional distress, mental illness and recovery, psychiatric, trauma posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), personality and mood disorders. Other topics included substance abuse, suicide assessment and intervention, officer wellness, anxiety issues, developmental disabilities, dementia, veterans, juveniles & transitionage youth, community resources, and a consumer and family interaction panel.

In February, key staff from the Suffolk County Police Department, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, the Suffolk County Office of Mental Hygiene and local advocates will participate in a kickoff event sponsored by the New York State Senate CIT training program initiative to further expand the CIT response model.
