The Sayville Village Improvement Society, SVIS, is proud to announce a Call for Entries for the First Annual Sayville Art in the Park Outdoor Sculpture Competion. The competition seeks twelve outdoor sculptures made from metal wheelbarrows, which SVIS will provide.

They will be exhibited in the public parks throughout the town for a five month period, after which they

will be auctioned off at the Sayville Summerfest on August 9, 2020. SVIS will provide alike wheelbarrows to all selected artists. This competition is open to artists/teams 18 years of age and older. The deadline to apply is February 24, 2020, with finalists notified by March 10, 2020. All of the relevant information concerning this competition , including the application

There will be awards of $500 each, for the Best in Show and for a People’s Choice Award. The mission of SVIS is to enhance Sayville through the planting and maintaining of gardens and the beautification of our parks.

Growing A Garden Of Nutrition Duffield Elementary School students are learning the importance of proper nutrition and economic sustainability thanks to a tower garden initiative coordinated by Youth and Family Services Coordinator Joanne Pisani, M.S., L.M.H.C. Secured through a donation from CFAC and PPS, the tower garden is currently being utilized in the second grade classes on a rotational basis.

Students are working as

horticulturists, planting, cultivating and harvesting the bounty from the garden, which includes kale, lettuce and various other produce. Through lessons with Ms. Pisani, the students are learning that eating healthy foods can help to prevent and revers disease and that plant foods are the matrix for cells to grow healthy.

Following each harvest, the students are treated to a “salad party” in class where they get to taste

test the different items grown and even take some home to share with their families. Prior to this year, the tower garden was used in fifth and third grade.

“Our long-term goal would be to have in Tower in every classroom,” said Ms. Pisani. “In addition, we will make our courtyard a green grow space where we can grow additional vegetables in the warmer months and donate to the Duffield Community.”

Weddings have a tendency to be expensive endeavors.

According to The Knot’s 2018 Real Weddings Study, the national average cost of a wedding is $33,931. Nearly half of that ($15,439) is spent on the reception venue alone.

As expensive as wedding receptions can be, couples should know that there are many ways to reduce reception costs without sacrificing fun.

1. Choose Foods Wisely Pour over the details of catering costs. The Knot says the average price for catering will be $68 per person. If you opt for an appetizers and cocktails reception, you may be able to shave several dollars off the bill. Look closely at the pricing for buffet versus plated meals.

The Charity of the Month for January is: YMCA Long Island www.ymcali.org

The YMCA of Long Island is a leading non-profit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility.

Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit.

The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville.

This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need.

These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more.

The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened.

When someone becomes

a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! Volunteers can serve on their Board of Directors/Board of Managers/ committees, raise funds to ensure their organization is accessible to all members of the community, motivate and support youth, extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier, advocate for their efforts and participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors.

Make A Statement With Your Wedding Cake Brides and grooms may pour over every detail of their weddings, but few components of the festivities may be as fun, especially for foodies, as deciding what the wedding cake will look like. Couples who want to deliver show-stopping visuals often express some measure of their creativity and personalities through statement wedding cakes.

Many couples now eschew the classic three-tiered white cake in favor of a dessert that garners instant attention.

Whether the cake is brightly colored or hand-painted, a towering architectural marvel or shimmering in metallics, couples are opting to make a statement with their confections. Apart from clever cake-toppers, here are ways to stand apart when dessert is served.

• According to the Perfect Wedding Guide, a rising trend in cakes is to cover a white or naked cake with

translucent glaze tinted in the couple’s wedding colors.

This artistic expression can be especially stunning in boho-chic weddings.

• Statement tiers also are popular. The cake may be traditional in nearly every way, but couples then set the cake apart by featuring an elaborate design or a different hue in one tier.

• Martha Stewart Weddings advises that more than just color can be used to make a statement. Lifelike sugar flowers can really set cakes apart. Guests may not be sure if they can consume all aspects of some cakes, but delicate sugar flowers taste as good as they look.

• Hand-painted tiles on a cake are another way to add panache. A bride and groom may be inspired by a European vacation or the stained-glass effects of religious windows and want to add that feel to the tiers of the cake.

The Tuskegee Airmen were the first black military aviators in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. They flew more than 15,000 individual sorties in Europe and North Africa, earning more than 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses. Johnson spoke about racial segregation in the military and in civilian life, and answered questions from attendees. Wedding Flowers Becoming Larger Than Life

Student Government Welcomes NY State Senator Connetquot High School’s Student Government Association members recently met with New York State Sen. Phil Boyle to learn more about the work of the state government.

The senator’s session at Connetquot High School focused on getting the students’ feedback on

what they felt he could do to further support their educational experience. In addition, he discussed his role as a senator, what it’s like to work in government and how he is working with the community to address pertinent issues in the state.

“I thought the kids received him well and

asked some really good questions,” said Student Government adviser Jennifer Piscitelli. “I liked how, regardless of party lines, he encouraged the students to get involved in government service and to volunteer. I believe that students can learn so much about their community if they do so.”

Move over bouquets and centerpieces, flowers are taking over weddings in a big way. While wedding trends come and go, flowers will always have a place at the wedding table.

There’s no right or wrong way to watch the Super Bowl, but some might consider a Super Bowl soiree without chicken wings a major faux pas. For those who want to avoid such a misstep, this recipe for “Virgil’s Smoked Chicken Wings With Blue Cheese Dip” from Neal Corman’s “Virgil’s Barbecue Road Trip Cookbook” (St. Martin’s Press) is sure to please.

1. To make the dip, combine 1 cup of the blue cheese, mayonnaise, buttermilk, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and salt in the bowl of a food Virgil’s Smoked Chicken processor and blend on low until smooth.

8. While the wings are cooking, cut the butter for the sauce into 1-inch cubes and refrigerate. Whisk the cornstarch into the white vinegar, in a small bowl.

9. In a medium sauté pan over medium heat, bring the hot sauce to a simmer and whisk in the thickened vinegar. Return to a simmer, cook for 1 minute, and remove from the heat.

10. Add the cayenne and slowly whisk in the cold butter. Keep warm until serving.

11. Remove the wings from the smoker or grill and put half of them into a bowl, cover with the sauce, and toss. Repeat with the remaining wings and serve on a platter, with the blue cheese dip on the side.
