Connetquot Public Library invites you to Chill Out and Read this winter when you join the Adult Reading Club. Solve a mystery, experience time travel, reread a classic, or find the magic; the possibilities are endless.

Options for Community Living, Inc., a Long Island based not-for-profit organization, has received a 2020 Cigna Well-Being Award. This recognition demonstrates a strong commitment to improving the health and well-being of its employees through a workplace wellness program. Options was recognized in the NY/NJ market, receiving Cigna’s 2nd tier award level “Honorable Culture of Well-Being”.

The BAFFA Beat Goes On BAFFA Art Gallery The newest of The BAFFA Beat Goes On series of videos is an introduction to the BAFFA Art Gallery and the individual artists and arts groups who exhibit there. An introduction by Gallery manager, Ellen Stoll, is followed by slides highlighting past shows by various art groups (PALS, Women Sharing Art, Bell Street Artists, Pola Lanzaro and Students) and

External Diploma Program The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a

competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home.

Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time,

or students who fare better without the structure of tests.

The Charity of the Month for January is

Angels of Long Island

The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which has recently expanded, located at 350-23 East Main Street.

The store is proud to take many types of donations. They now accept bottle and can donations every MondaySaturday from 9AM-3PM, where you can simply pull up curbside, pop your trunk and a team member will take the donations for you. All bottles and cans must be marked New York state deposit and no broken glass bottles are able to be accepted. Please remember to separate glass items from plastic items before you donate them. Pickups at your residence are available for large quantities of recyclables.

Additionally, they accept other donations, such as new or gently used clothing, housewares, home decor and furniture. All proceeds from this store go directly to help Long Island residents in need.

Lastly, if you have some free time on your hands and are comfortable volunteering at the store, please contact Debbie at 631.205.3458. During this pandemic, Angels of Long Island is short staffed and looking for help. Their store is cleaned every morning and masks are required there. Please only consider volunteering if you are not showing any covid symptoms. Everyone’s safety is their first priority.

Angels of Long Island is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that somewhat formed itself back in 2015.

Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing nonprofit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Six years ago these two ladies knew of someone in need of clothing and simply wanted to see if they could be of help. They decided to start a Facebook group in hopes of spreading the word and receiving donations for this person in need. They posted a message and went on with their day, later checking in to find themselves overwhelmed with the response.

Whoever doubts that there aren’t people with good hearts that are willing to help a neighbor in need is wrong, fortunately! Debbie and Brittany named the Facebook group Angels of Long Island and members would post about ways they could help others in crisis on Long Island. The group continued to gain in momentum and members, so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island.

Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience. I did not expect to be running a thriving non-profit organization that has a storefront on Long Island and helps so many in need when I made that Facebook group years ago. What has come since that group was formed is truly a miracle.”

As we reflect upon what it means to be part of a community, we must look to our past to find its roots. In 2015 Connetquot Public Library celebrated its 40th Anniversary with a special program. The library unveiled a series of interviews chronicling district residents’ early lives, local history, and the places we call home.

Adult Librarians Diane Haberstroh and Janet Eagan created a community

Bourne.” In “Two StrongWilled Women,” George Munkenbeck introduces us to locals Alva Erksine Smith Vanderbilt Belmont and Isabella Premm, champions of women’s rights and two prominent Oakdale residents. They were affiliated with the Vanderbilt Idle Hour Estate.

Their contributions are not only etched in our local history, but in the legacy of

change, they left behind.

Explore the early Czech history of Bohemia from the Bohemia Union Cemetery established in 1873 to the Czechoslovak Society of America Hall.
