Join volunteer host families in and around Suffolk County for our 140th summer, and open your heart and home to a Fresh Air child! Each summer, thousands of New York City children visit suburban, rural and small town communities along the East Coast from North Carolina to Maine and Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program.

Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from seven to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips.

It was well before Christmas and all through the season, students were busy, some with good reason. While visions of “sugarplums” may have danced in many heads, a special group of Sayville Middle School students prepared for the holidays with the less fortunate on their minds.

In addition to other school community-service programs, Sayville eightgrade student Brock Murtha speared-headed a pajama-and-book drive with the Long Island Chapter of the Pajama Program* to help children in local shelters and foster care across Long Island.

Working with other Sayville Middle School students, along with his mother, Lisa Murtha, and sixth-grade brother, Macklin, Brock and fellow students gathered one evening at the end of the drive in December to sort and pack the books and pajamas they had collected and also to decorate the boxes.

“This is our second year doing this project,” Brock explained. “It really feels good to be able to help the lives of poor kids, especially around the holidays. We have fun shopping for the items and putting together boxes of pajamas and books. I can’t imagine

there are kids out there that don’t have pajamas, but there are, right on Long Island.”

Trevor Hotis agreed.

“This is a very meaningful project because I’m helping kids my own age who don’t have a lot; it feels good to do a good deed.”

“We are not affiliated with any church, just a group of Middle School kids wanting to do something for less fortunate local kids,” Lisa Murtha added. “This year our pajama-and-book drive collected 126 pairs of cozy PJs and 66 books. Our donations went to Healthy Families Suffolk, a division of Family Service League, and were distributed to those in need before the holidays. I think seeing young teens give back to the community is a great thing - especially around the holidays!”

It was a win-win situation for all involved. Not only did those young recipients truly enjoy a good night for the holidays, but the Middle School “givers” felt the warmth of this ‘Pay-ItForward’ activity in their hearts.

Honoring Character For consistently demonstrating exemplary character with positive conduct, twenty-three Sayville High School students, nominated by High School teachers and staff, received recognition at the Fall 2015 Breakfast of Champions.

Within Sayville High School, “these students can be identified by their smiles, by their respectfulness, by their humility, and most importantly, their empathy for others,” said Assistant Principal Jillian Makris in her opening remarks to welcome the honorees, their families, and staff who nominated them.

Sharing a brief anecdote, Mrs. Makris explained that she had wanted all the

students gathered in her office before she notified them of the honor. As the students began to arrive, they remained very quiet.

“You could hear a pin drop.

I said, ‘Guys, relax! Don’t worry. Talk. Everybody will be here soon.’ No one said a word. And then when I finally said, ‘You’ve all been nominated to be a Breakfast of Champion,’ there was a collected sigh of relief. So, it just goes to show how unassuming they are, and that’s humility.”

During the ceremony, District faculty and staff members called upon each recipient one-by-one and shared their appreciation with personalized messages,* at which time each student shook hands with Principal Ron Hoffer

and received a Breakfast of Champions certificate and plaque created with their portrait on a Wheaties Box background.

After, everyone enjoyed a satisfying breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, home fries, bagels, and pancakes along with assorted beverages, donated by Lovin’Oven, which perfectly completed the heartwarming ceremony.

Special thanks go to Assistant Principal Jillian Makris who organized and hosted the morning ceremony, the technology department for making the plaques, and Mr. Ari Kramer and his chamber students who provided the soothing musical ambiance.

For twenty-eight years, the Sayville Senior Class Breakfast has given the graduating class a break in their hectic schedules and time to share memories.

What better day to reflect and give thanks than the day before Thanksgiving?

Originally launched by Senior Class Advisor Mrs. Marie Joost-Cox and former High School Principal Joseph Buderman, Senior Breakfast has been both a tradition and a privilege enjoyed by generations of Sayville students ever

since.

This year was no different.

The Class of 2016 enjoyed a nourishing morning meal on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, provided by Parkville Deli. Steaming trays of everyone’s favorites: bacon, eggs, omelets, French toast, home fries, along with bagels, fresh fruit with yogurt, juice, coffee, and all the trimmings were served by volunteer Senior Class parents.

Under the guidance of Senior Class of 2016

Advisors Evan Hammer and Mike Pace, the Breakfast Committee decorated the cafeteria with streamers, golden table clothes, balloons, and (plastic) champagne-glass centerpieces filled with Hersey kisses.

Once “Class Superlatives” were announced during which each student named received a cap with the description, the breakfast ended with a traditional slide show.

The guests have gone. The last of the leftovers have been eaten. Presents have been tried on, shown off, returned; in some cases, re-gifted. The decorations have been packed away for another year. The holiday season, which we look forward to each year with such eager anticipation… gone in a matter of days.

I’m experiencing a little holiday withdrawal myself.

There is something about taking down the Christmas tree, unplugging the lights one last time and surveying a now barren-looking home that just feels… well, depressing is what it feels.

Downright melancholy, in fact. Gone is the sparkle of the season.

Apologies to those with birthdays and other similarly cheery milestones in the month of January, but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, it seems that nothing particularly exciting occurs until the groundhog makes his scheduled appearance on February 2nd – and that, only in the case of his shadow being absent, signaling the coming of spring.

Not that we should be complaining about the winter weather we’ve been having up to this point. A light dusting of snow once, temperatures hovering above normal for much of the last several months – we have been quite fortunate compared to the last several winters. Unless you favor the four-hour commute home

on Long Island’s slippery roadways with hundreds of your fellow drivers, the backbreaking shoveling and the bone chilling frost, we are holding up quite well thus far.

Sure January is the month of new beginnings and attempts to overhaul our lives. What better time to get those finances in order, shred old documents, do some deep cleaning around the house? Of course, none of these things evokes quite the same sense of excitement as celebrations with family and friends, productive though they may be.

Such is January. Such is winter. Such is life. As Billy Joel sang, “It’s either sadness or euphoria.” Rarely anything in between.

Afternoon of Beauty

Cosmetology students from Eastern Suffolk BOCES and the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology in Riverhead and Oakdale held An Afternoon of Beauty offering special salon services for a $5 donation and a non-perishable food item. Proceeds benefitted St. John’s Nepomucene in Oakdale, the Long Island Council of Churches, and New Beginnings Brendan House in Riverhead.

Over 300 members of the community came for manicures, paraffin wax hand treatments, haircuts, blow-outs, and styling. The event raised over $1,500 and over 450 lbs. of food was donated.

Constance Borny of Riverhead said she saw the event listed in her local newspaper and decided to come down for a haircut.

“The students were very nice. They showed off the skills they are learning.

I enjoyed the experience especially knowing that my donation was going to a good cause.”

Cosmetology Teacher Carolyn McKillop said, “It’s a win-win situation for the students and the community. The students have the opportunity to display their talents, practice their skills and customer relations, and it is good will to the community.”

Campaign Volunteers

Last year, Eric Stenzel and Michaela Medeck, two eighth-grade students in Ms. Eileen Walsh-Ahrens’ class were inspired to be proactive for a modern cause. After studying the unit on the Progressive Era (the 1890s to 1920s during which widespread social activism and political reform took root in the United States), they began to think how they might help bring about social reform in their own times.

Observing their parents and educators rallying for the repeal of the Gap Elimination Adjustment that withholds millions of dollars in promised aid from New York school districts each year, Eric and Michaela found their cause, and as Sayville student leaders, assisted with the political action

for the Sayville Advocacy Group.

The Sayville Advocacy Group, a coalition of residents, teachers, and administrators working together to advance common sense and effective education policies and led by resident Dina Protus, spearheaded the local movement to get fair funding for Sayville Schools. The students joined and supported that action and helped collect over a thousand signatures from residents petitioning for the repeal of the GEA.* In the process, they also learned how to be responsible citizens even though they are still well below the voting age.

This year, as ninth graders, Eric and Michaela recruited Ned Malik and Rob Cascio to help; all four

are looking forward to the next political action issue.

“The students helped raise awareness of the issue (GEA) on social media and attended multiple school events to get residents to sign our petitions,” Ms. Walsh-Ahrens said.

“I couldn’t be more proud of them!”

Recently, the students hand delivered their petitions to Senators Tom Croci and Phil Boyle, who were not only receptive and impressed by their youthful resourcefulness, but was able to assure them that progress has been made toward restoring some of the GEA aid to school districts. “Thank you very much for all your hard work,” the Senators told the students.

Cultural Exchange

For educators, creating a climate of constructive collaboration can go a long way at addressing diversity.

As part of a Cultural Exchange program to bridge diversity on Long Island, forty Leadership Club students at Sayville High School welcomed forty Amityville students who were invited to spend a portion of their school day participating in classroom lessons and school-related activities at Sayville High School.

After the Sayville Leadership Club greeted members of The Warrior Awareness Club (aka as

the WAC PAC) at the main entrance, everyone enjoyed a breakfast reception, followed by successful “icebreaker” activities. Once the Sayville and Amityville students paired up, the Sayville students took their counterparts to classes.

Later, they all reconvened for a large Thanksgivingstyle feast prepared by the Leadership Club organizers that commingled students from different geographic, cultural, and socioeconomic perspectives and allowed them to unwind and share stories and experiences.

Both the WAC PAC and

Leadership Club members expressed positive feedback about their day and look forward to the club’s visit to Amityville in Spring.

The success of last year’s exchange and this year’s visit have encouraged Leadership Club advisors Jennifer Wittman-Cahill and Angela O’Hoppe along with The Warrior Awareness Club advisor Jason McGowan to continue on their mission of closing the cultural gaps and all it has to offer in the future between the two districts!

As an incentive to get “sweets off the streets,” the Halloween Candy Buyback program was founded by Wisconsin Dentist Chris Kammer ten years ago.

Since its national launch in 2007 with dentists nationwide joining the campaign, the momentum is still building today.

HCBB offers $1 a pound to buy back candy collected by the young trick-or-treaters and ships the donations, along with toothbrushes,

to troops abroad in the Operation Gratitude care packages.

For this year’s Operation Halloween Candy BuyBack, Sayville Middle School Health Teacher Jodi Maurici encouraged the Middle School community to bring in their leftover Halloween Candy for several worthy causes. Students collected 177 pounds of candy that was delivered to Blue Star moms - a military

mom organization to ship overseas for the holidays, while the buyback money was donated to the Ride for Life in honor of Ethan Deutch’s father, who recently succumbed to ALS. When the Ride for Life visited the Middle School last month, Ethan personally presented the $177 that would benefit ALS research towards finding a cure to Chris Pendergast.

Career Internship Special Career Education students in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Health Related Occupations (HRO) Program at Islip Career Center in Oakdale are involved in an internship at the Hilton Garden Inn in Ronkonkoma. They were invited by General Manager Ross Harrison.

The internship opportunity at the Hilton Garden Inn is a crosstraining experience for the students.

HRO Teacher Deirdre Kroupa said, “In the first year of the HRO program, the students are learning how to become professionals and learning

the specific skills to work in various areas of a hospital; they are not necessarily working with patients.”

The internship at the Hilton Garden Inn mirrors the learning experience in a hospital environment, except there are no patients; rather there are guests who need attention and service.

Each student does a six-week rotation which includes working in the laundry, housekeeping, kitchen, dietary, bussing tables, waitressing, front desk, and environmental services.

Kroupa said, “The hotel has allowed the students to decorate the front lobby

which is part of recreation activities, much like the students would do in a hospital environment.”

Amanda, a student from Central Islip UFSD, likes working in the kitchen.

She said, “I especially like the part of doing the dishes. It’s fast paced and it keeps me busy.”

This year, ESBOCES is partnering with students from the Brentwood UFSD. Kroupa said, “The ESBOCES students will be mentoring the Brentwood students in the areas of time management, how to get their job done, how to be respectful, and how to be a good employee.”

HOLIDAY SHOP FUN - Connetquot School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School recently welcomed Santa to campus to meet more than 50 students, 5-10 years old, and do some holiday shopping. Cherokee Street Elementary School ParentTeacher Association (PTA) representatives Elaine Beisel and Jessica Giel welcomed more than 100 parents, students and teachers to browse through the holiday shop while enjoying holiday music and complimentary hot chocolate. Students were invited to take pictures with Santa and ask him about life on the North Pole.

Warming Up the Winter Bayport-Blue Point High School recently organized a pajama and book drive to benefit area children in need this winter.

The initiative, sponsored

by the school’s student council, benefited children supported by the Head Start Program in Patchogue, an outreach program at a local church,

St. Christopher Ottilie, which is affiliated with a foster care program, and the Toys for Tots program.
