At a recent holiday luncheon, held at Captain Bill’s Restaurant in Bay Shore, the Connetquot Retired Teachers Association (CRTA) held its annual business meeting and first fund-raising gettogether. The CRTA grants two $1,000 scholarships to the children, or grandchildren, of retired Connetquot teachers, at its scholarship dinner. Close to 75 retired Connetquot School District educators, spouses and friends, joined to catch up on the
news, enjoy a tasty lunch and continue the fundraising effort to present financial grants at the May, 2017 luncheon. CRTA President Peter Leis said that the organization meets “… three times per year, at which time we can share updates on legal, medical, financial matters, and trips that are arranged for our members.” CRTA Secretary, Pat Duda, distributed a directory of current members which included addresses
and email contacts. The organization has also supported such efforts as Make a Wish Foundation, Walk for Breast Cancer, ALS Society, and local food pantries. Joan Perrini, New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) Retiree Service Consultant reported on concerns the organization has for upcoming New York State legislation, and potential changes to the pension system.

Cherokee Elementary School fifth-grade students in the Connetquot Central School District showcased the circus skills they recently acquired before a cheering crowd of family and friends during the school’s annual Cirque du Jour travelling circus
troupe event. Prior to the show, the students worked with circus trainers in their physical education classes to learn special circus skills to entertain their fans, including juggling, Chinese Yo-Yo’s and the Diabolo Stick. The circus

Prestigious Honor Sayville High School Senior Caitlin Gormley was named a Semifinalist Scholar in The Regeneron Science Talent Search (Regeneron STS), formerly Intel, the nation’s most prestigious pre-college science competition. Caitlin earned this distinction as a Semifinalist Scholar for her research entitled Geospatial analysis of hydrofracturing activities related to human health outcomes and seismic activity. During the summer following her freshman year, Caitlin had enrolled in an Introductory GIS (geographic information systems) course taught by her research teacher Maria Brown at the high school, but offered under the auspices of the Accelerated College Education Program through Stony Brook University. (A GIS uses robust spatialstatistic tools to create maps that help researchers visualize, question, analyze, and interpret data. Ultimately it tells a story about relationships, patterns, and trends that render a clearer understanding of the data collected.) Using ARGIS, a GIS software produced by ESRI, Inc. (ArcMap Version 10.3) to conduct her research at the high school, Caitlin worked on multiple geospatial projects for the past two and a half years with the help of her Honors Earth Science
teacher Janet Kaczmarek and Maria Brown. The purpose of Caitlin’s study was to assess geospatially whether proximity to hydrofracturing activities may be associated with increases incidence rates of some cancers and other health outcomes in selected regions of the USA.
hydrofracturing activities occur (PA, OH, WV). Caitlyn’s results suggest that all health outcomes showed increases incidences in areas where hydrofracturing is occurring. The mean annual wind-trend over the disease hot-spot regions suggest that

She assessed the potential for impacts on human health outcomes in geographic locations where

Spreading Holiday Cheer Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School staff, students and administrators in the Connetquot Central School District recently visited Ockers Gardens on Montauk Highway in Oakdale, keeping up with the annual tradition where students and staff members sing and play holiday favorites for senior
residents and visitors. Coordinated by ELA teacher Pearl HaberZaiff and members of the OBMS Music Department, this annual holiday celebration generates a wonderful holiday spirit for the residents. More than 75 “senior friends” were served holiday treats while they enjoyed an
entertaining series of tunes and songs by the students. “This celebration was a huge success and helped make the holiday special for the seniors, as well as our OBMS students,” said Mrs. Haber-Zaiff. “I’d like to thank everyone who helped make this Ockers Gardens visit such a success.”

From this select pool, 40 finalists are then invited to Washington, D.C. in March to participate in final judging, display their work to the public, meet with notable scientists, and compete for the top award of $250,000. Each scholar receives a $2,000 award from Regeneron with an additional $2,000 going to his or her school, Finalists will be announced on January 14, 2017! Last year, Caitlin received First Place at the ESRI Map Gallery High School Competition held at the International GIS User Conference in San Diego, California and also was invited last June as the only high school student to present her research findings at URISA’s (Urban & Regional Information Systems Association) Health Symposium held in Washington DC, where her findings were well-received.

It was only after a recent conversation with a friend that I realized I don’t read nearly as often as I used to, or would like to … ever, really. I’m not sure when my love of books took a backseat to … what, exactly, I couldn’t even tell you. But it certainly has. Back in elementary school, I used to belong to whatever book-of-the-month club they were peddling in our reading class, subscribing to the various newsletters and lists of new releases. As I moved up to middle and high school, English class was one of my favorites, and I devoured whatever literary material the lesson plan called for. From short stories and plays to novels and poetry, I
delighted in broadening my horizons. College was much of the same, with special emphasis on those deeper philosophical texts, followed by detailed term papers analyzing each word and phrase and my interpretation of them. Leisurely, perhaps not; but the academic appreciation for such historical works was certainly not lost on me. Since then – in the last decade or so – I can probably count the number of books I have actually read cover to cover. That’s not to say I haven’t attempted a few series from time to time – namely, the five-part Game of Thrones collection – only to fall off track and wind up rereading those very same pages I pored over just a few
months back. As it is, I barely manage to skim through my Rolling Stone subscription, and that only after it is several months outdated. My hometown library card has long since expired, and I have yet to set foot in my new local one in the four years since I moved. Aside from the occasional Barnes & Noble purchase, my book collection has remained status quo. I wouldn’t call reading more a “resolution,” exactly, but it is something I would very much like to invest more time in. Even one book per month would be a vast improvement at this point. And, this time, there will be no term papers due upon completion.
