Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco wants to remind residents that Yellow Dot medical information kits for vehicles and homes are available through his Office and may be obtained by calling the Sheriff’s Office’s Community Relations Unit at 631.852.3763. The kits are made available through the NYS Sheriff’s Association, in collaboration with local Sheriff’s Offices, and are distributed to the public free of charge.

The Yellow Dot kit contains a medical information card and a Yellow Dot program decal.

Participants complete the card, attach a recent photo, place it in the glove compartment of their vehicle, and place the Yellow Dot decal on the rear driver’s side window. First responders arriving at the scene of an emergency will be alerted

by the Yellow Dot decal to look for the medical information card in the glove compartment. It may also be used in a participant’s residence to alert first responders when they enter someone’s home.

The Sheriff’s Office has distributed than 10,000 Yellow Dot to County residents since the programs’ inception in 2013.

FIRST Tech Challenge season on Long Island.

Qualifying Tournaments will be held in Lynbrook on Sunday, January 8th, 2017; Center Moriches on Sunday, January 15th, 2017; and Syosset on Saturday, January 28th, 2017. The Long Island Championship will be held in Smithtown on Saturday, February 11th, 2017.

The FIRST Tech Challenge program is presented by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI).

The other three FIRST programs are already very active on Long Island and engage students from age six through 18 in the FIRST Robotics Competition, FIRST LEGO League and FIRST LEGO League Jr. SBPLI is proud to offer this fourth and final program in the FIRST progression

of programs.

“LuHi was the perfect site to host the inaugural event of the season,” says FIRST Long Island representative, Janet Anderson. “They were a wonderful partner and we look forward to continuing our relationship with them to benefit the students of Long Island.”

Creativity and science came together at last weekend’s FIRST® Tech Challenge Scrimmage at Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School (LuHi). Teams, comprised of students age 12 to 18, worked alongside adult mentors to design, build, program and operate robots to play a floor game in an alliance format on a 12-foot by 12-foot field.

FIRST Tech Challenge is an international program featuring hundreds of tournaments for more than 46,000 students in nearly 20 countries.

Students demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship and sense of community.

Sixth Grade Scientists The Long Island Geographic Information Systems User Group (LIGIS) held its annual fall conference on Wednesday, November 16th, at Stony Brook University’s Wang Center. Sayville High School’s Research in Science and Engineering teacher, Maria Brown, co-presented with Samantha Hmelovsky, a bright and talented sixth grader at Sayville Middle School. The title of their presentation was, “Using ARC GIS Online to Analyze Student-collected Environmental Data.”

Samantha presented the findings of her outstanding geospatial research on water quality related to biodiversity in the Carmans River, which she conducted as a fifth grader under the guidance of teacher Kathy Whitehurst.

Samantha, along with twenty four other prodigious fifth graders, was trained to use Arc GIS Online during the 2015 STEM Symposium held at Lincoln Avenue Elementary School. This training was done in collaboration with the New York State Central Pine Barrens Commission’s program, “Day in the Life of a River,” directed by local Sayville resident, Melissa Parrott. The training also combined efforts with Brookhaven National Laboratory’s “Open Space Stewardship” program, directed by Melvyn Morris. Samantha shared her geospatial analysis of potential pollutants and land uses that may be adversely impacting water quality and therefore, biodiversity in different sections of the river. She also shared her personal experience using ArcGIS Online and concluded,

“ ‘I wish I could use it every day!’” Her presentation was well-received by industry academics, non-governmental organizations, and students as well as staff members of Stony Brook University. Both Samantha and fellow student Adam Burgardt received awards for their posters

at the conference.

Additionally, Samantha and Adam’s exceptionally advanced posters were accepted into ESRI’s International GIS User Group Conference, Map Gallery, held in San Diego, California in June of 2016. The pair placed first and second, respectively, for the elementary poster category. Both were recognized for their superior work

by Sayville’s Board of Education in November of 2016.

Other highlights for Sayville’s geospatial scholars include Caitlin Gormley, Jared Bergen, Jahan Rahman, Thomas Faughnan and Sierra Boyce, all from Sayville High School. These insanely bright students have represented RISE well through their exceptional projects that were also accepted into ESRI’s Map Gallery. Caitlin Gormley received the 1st Place Award in the High School Category which is an amazing accomplishment!

She also received an honorable invitation to present her research at the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association Health Conference (URISA) held in Washington, DC from May 31st – June 3rd as a junior in RISE. She was the first high school student ever to be invited to present at this National Conference.

Unfortunately, as the numbers of homeless with special needs continues to grow on Long Island, there are no easy answers to the crisis. “The number of homeless households in Nassau and Suffolk Counties increased 25% in the last three years, from 548 households in 2013 to 682 households in 2016, according to the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless.” But the victories come one family at a time. And a formerly homeless family of four will be spending their first holiday season in their new home in Mattituck, thanks to their efforts and assistance from the nonprofit Community Housing Innovations (CHI).

Regina Nielsen and her three children moved in to their new home on December 1st, five and a half years after she and her family ended up in a CHI emergency shelter.

After six months in emergency housing, Ms. Nielsen was accepted into CHI’s supportive housing program, which provided her with the tools to gain independence.

Often, families with special needs become trapped in a cycle of dependency, as their benefits alone are insufficient to maintain stable housing and they succumb to the stress of an impossible situation, devoting all of their time to finding the rent.

In supportive housing, Ms. Nielsen not only gained affordable rental housing, her case managers and social workers helped with life skills, job training, health care, and linked her to a host of other community supports that contribute to stability and independence. Funding is provided under New York State’s Homeless Housing & Assistance Program,

“Six years ago, I couldn’t imagine being where I am today. I can never repay CHI for the help they gave me and my family,” said Ms. Nielsen.

When Ms. Nielsen got to CHI, she was homeless, nine months sober, and traveling almost daily by bus to Stony Brook Hospital to care for her premature baby girl, who remained in the NICU for three months. She also has a son who was one year old, at the time, and daughter, then 10.

From emergency housing in Middle Island, CHI accepted her into the agency’s transitional housing in a home in East Patchogue. Due to the lack of permanent housing, CHI extended her lease at that home for almost two years, enabling Ms. Nielsen to care for her children and get back on her feet. This month Ms. Nielsen and her family moved into a new home, independent of CHI. Due to the help she received at CHI, Ms. Nielsen was able to become the kind of parent she has always wanted to be. Her older daughter was being bullied at school. She was able to get her the help she

needed, sending her to a therapist and addressing it with the school. That same daughter will graduate early from high school this June and has already been accepted to Jamestown College in the fall. Her two younger children are enrolled in their new schools and doing well.

Her younger daughter, Rayna, has special needs and receives occupational and physical therapy, and schooling that meets her needs.

Now that both younger children are a little older and enrolled in school full-time, Ms. Nielsen is ready to start a full-time job. She is excited about the road ahead.

It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. So was the year 2016, at times.

And so we bid farewell, and look ahead to 2017 with the same mix of enthusiasm and anxiety, optimism and apprehension.

All years are a product of their individual months, weeks, days, hours even.

Highs and lows become woven into the fabric of our being and, somehow, intertwine into yet another chapter of life. As much as the collective opinion seems to hold that this past year was one of the

worst on record, for many reasons, I’m sure it held just as much hope and promise for others. It’s all a matter of perspective.

Ultimately, each moment needs to be taken on its own, able to stand up by itself and not be compared and contrasted to the big picture. Too much focus on the future, and on things beyond our control, leads to missing those opportunities right in front of us. This is not to say that we should forgo any life plans we may have; but there is a balance. As we analyze and overthink, life marches on around us.

And so the goal, this year, should be to live, to experience, to embrace those moments swirling around us. And to savor them. Good, bad or indifferent, everything happens for a reason. We may not understand the dynamics of why, or what it may lead to down the road; but eventually, the path becomes clearer. The important thing is not to stray too far off the road in the meantime.

The idealism in all of us suggests that the best is yet to come. Here’s hoping that 2017 is exactly that for everyone.

In an effort to make the holidays bright for those in the community, students from Sycamore and Idle Hour Elementary Schools in the Connetquot Central School District visited with residents at the Arbors Assisted Living Facility in Bohemia in late December.

Sycamore Avenue Elementary School second-graders met with their “Grandfriends” to showcase the spectacular songs they have been

learning within their music classes. Under the direction of Sycamore music teacher Rachel White the students took turns singing and playing instruments on seasonal themed songs. Additionally, the students presented their “Grandfriends” with special ornaments they crafted within their art classes as a token of appreciation for inviting them into their home.

Additionally, Idle Hour

Elementary School fourthgrade students within Patrick Brennan’s and Tracy McIntyre’s classes spread some holiday cheer by showcasing their newly attained ukulele skills, taught to them exclusively by Idle Hour Elementary School music teacher Kathy Daugherty.

The students also created projects for their seniors to put on display during the holiday season.

Digging Up History Eleventh- and 12thgrade students enrolled within Connetquot High School’s Introduction to Anthropology class, taught

by Terry Lafrance, recently used their knowledge of excavating to dig up “artifacts” from the school’s courtyard.

The course, which is the only one throughout all of Long Island to offer students college credit in partnership with Farmingdale State College,

includes archaeological elements as a significant portion of the coursework.

During the excavating project at the high school, the students were split into four separate zones, and designated their own spot to uncover “artifacts.” The groups used their newly attained skills to dig up artifacts, classify what they were, and properly mark down the proper numerical values.

In addition to their in-

class work, the students had the chance to view the work of professionals during a recent field trip to the Sackler Educational Lab, located within the American Museum of Natural History. During the trip, the students participated in a hands-on experiment and used their newly acquired knowledge to identify the gender and height statistics of an individual based on their “bones.”

Piano Competition Launched A pair of Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) piano students, Luke Gentil (Half Hollow Hills CSD) and Jeremy Kaplan (BellmoreMerrick CHSD), were featured performers at the Grace Music School’s official kickoff event for their Island-wide piano competition. The winner of the competition will earn $1,000 and will perform at Carnegie Hall.

At the event, Mr. Gentil performed two of his original compositions, “Billade No. 2” and

“Gentil Invention No. 1.”

Mr. Kaplan performed a medley of Billy Joel songs, beginning with “Waltz No. 2” from Fantasies & Delusions. He also performed the jazz standard “Blue Rondo a la Turk” by Dave Brubeck.

“What more fitting way to celebrate Long Island’s aspiring pianists then having a piano competition,” said Grace Heaphy, director of the Grace Music School. “It gives them a chance to perform at one of the greatest music venues

in the world.” The competition will be held in April of 2017 at the worldfamous Steinway and Sons piano showroom in New York City. The winner will perform at Carnegie Hall in June.

“We could not be more proud of these two flourishing musicians,” said LIHSA Principal Jack Lenson. “They are an excellent representation of the gifted youngsters that constitute our school.

They are the embodiment of Long Island’s up-andcoming artistic talent.”

Robotics Invitational Now in its fifth year, the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Long Island Half Hollow Hills Invitational has become a staple of the local FIRST Robotics Competition season. The event, which this year was held on Saturday, November 19 at Half Hollow Hills High School West in Dix Hills, New York, with support from School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), is a way for teams to face off using the previous season’s robots one final time before launching into the next build season.

This year’s event featured 24 teams, which competed using the robots they built for the 2016 Long Island Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition, held in March, the challenge for which was dubbed was FIRST StrongHold™. This past season, and at the Invitational, FIRST robots battled on a 27-by-54-foot playing field on which participants earned points

by accomplishing set tasks.

Some of the goals included traversing obstacles, throwing “boulders” into various openings of the castle and climbing the tower – which resulted in extra points.

The winning trio/alliance comprised of PatchogueMedford High School Team #329 “Mohawks,” West Islip High School Team #871 “Robotechs” and finally Team #2875 “CyberHawks” of Cold Spring Harbor. The finalists were PlainviewOld Bethpage High School Team #353 “POBots,” Plainedge High School Team #527 “Red Dragons” and finally Wheatley School Team #2872 “CyberCats.”

The Invitational is designed to showcase the benefits of robotics programs and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education to students, schools, communities and local businesses. As testing results and college entrances are now considered a measure

of a school’s success, the implementation of STEM-focused curricula has become increasingly important to developing the careers of students, who can relate the skills learned from FIRST robotics to positions in the medical, business and other professional industries.

FIRST is leading the way for diversification in STEM fields. The robotics competition, according to SBPLI FIRST Robotics Competition CoDirector Debra Winter, is a “launching pad for future professional mathematicians and engineers. Each NYSHFA/NYSCAL member was encouraged to hold their own art contest and was invited to submit up to two pieces of original artwork by their residents. The response was overwhelming, with more than 85 pieces submitted from across New York state. The judges included representatives from the New York State Museum and the Sorelle Gallery in Albany.

Ranging in age from 57 to 97, the different backgrounds of the artists who submitted work creates a unique blend of artistic styles. Some are professional artists who have been drawing and painting their entire lives, while others discovered their talents after moving

into a long term care facility where they began taking art classes.

“Our residents have shared such rich stories through their artwork,” said Richard S. Patterson, Jr., executive director of the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc. “The ‘Art from the Heart’ calendar provides a forum for these talented and interesting individuals to shine.”
