aculty and Staff at Morrow Elementary in Central Islip School District gifted toys and clothing and in gift boxes to dozens of families and children in their school community. The gifts were placed under the school’s Giving Tree until they were set for distribution to families whose holiday was made happier and brighter. My First Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan ‘Twas the night of Christmas and all the humans have gone home, saddled with packages of presents and leftovers and happy memories of the past two days’ festivities. Me, I’m feverishly swimming laps around my bowl in a desperate attempt to work off the calories from my (multiple) meals and avoid this holiday weight gain I keep hearing so much about.

I have to admit, I didn’t understand what the fuss over “Christmas” was all about. All I can say is my human never stopped running to and fro in the weeks leading up to the occasion.

Every time she came home – late, I might add, resulting in my dinner being delayed yet again (insert impatient fin tapping here) – she would be carrying all sorts of bags, some filled with food, others with gifts, wrapping paper, greeting cards…

I decided I had better get something to show my appreciation for the great hospitality she has shown me over these last 10 and a half months. I had the human’s mommy pick out an oversized Snoopy stuffed animal, since I’ve noticed all sorts of plush toys around the apartment. The gift card read: To My Dearest Human, Jamie… Love, Your Buddy xoxo And people say I don’t show any gratitude!

Me, I made out on the deal pretty well too. I received another gift card in my own personalized mini-stocking, along with a front row seat to Christmas Eve dinner, brunch the following morning and the unwrapping of the presents on Christmas Day. They even decorated my bowl with some flashy red and green bows that I mistook for fellow fishy friends. How exciting!

My human has promised me

a proper shopping spree after the new year, and I can’t wait.

Although, I must say, I’m fairly low-maintenance as pets go.

No fancy castles and shrubbery needed for me – just me and my plant, a generous helping of flakes and maybe a weekly bath to freshen my bowl. Oh, and plenty of humanly love and attention, which I receive in spades.

All in all, I am one happy betta. This Christmas thing was pretty exciting, and I hear there are more festivities scheduled for later in the week when a large glittering ball drops from the top of a building. Hopefully I’ll get a front row seat on the coffee table to witness that spectacle!

Long Island Authors’ Circle A group of published Long Island writers has formed an organization to be known as the “Long Island Authors’ Circle.” The newly established ‘LIAC’ is currently composed of six charter members who have been published individually in virtually every fiction and non-fiction genre; from poetry and drama, to journalism and novels.

The core group consists of four women and two men who hail from St. James, Northport, Dix Hills, Massapequa Park, and Smithtown. Their varied backgrounds include:

Town Councilwoman, Newspaper Publisher, College Professor, Literary Critic, Businessman, and Television Personality.

Purpose of the Authors’ Circle is the exchange of information and ideas valuable to members in the execution and furtherance of their respective writing crafts. Communication is conducted primarily via email, though physical meetings are held when proposed and unanimously agreed to by the charter participants.

Each of the core members may sponsor new

Long Island candidates for membership if they have been published. When unanimously approved, nominees are invited to join the organization.

The “Long Island Authors’ Circle” has no mandatory meetings or dues; no officers, committees, or elections; no by-laws ... and participation in the group’s activities is at all times strictly voluntary.

Showing They CARE Islip Middle School’s conscientious CARE Club conducted its recent annual food drive, serving the community by collecting 49 boxes of food for a local food pantry. The food items helped to stock the pantry’s shelves as well as fill baskets provided to local families.

“The children really enjoyed helping the people of our community,” said CARE Club adviser Mary Carroll.

The Islip CARE Club currently has 28 participating students, ranging from sixth- to eighth-grade, and helps run community service

events throughout the year, from the Pennies for Patients campaign in March for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, an Islip Animal Shelter collection in April and a Salvation Army clothing drive in May.

Special Honorees The Islip Town Board recently honored two men who took it upon themselves to repair and refurbish Town Hall’s nativity scene.

Ted Gladkowski and John Brennan are two respected local artists who volunteered their time to help bring some holiday cheer to the Town.

They noticed the state of disrepair of the Town’s nativity scene, and pooled their resources to make it look better than ever.

Both men are no strangers to community service, each having served overseas in the military and spearheaded local charitable initiatives.

nativity scene is just the latest in their long list of accomplishments.

“These two men exemplify the ideals of service to country and community, and we are so thankful for their efforts during this holiday season,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

For East Islip High School exchange student Chiara Van Baarle, 17, her home away from home on Long Island has been a study in small contrasts to her native New Zealand, from the seasons to schooling.

Hailing from the suburb of Takapuna in the Auckland Region, the 12th-grader came to East Islip this past February, staying with a local host family. The school year in New Zealand, where the seasons are the reverse of the U.S., starts at the end of January and is split into four terms with a twoweek break between each term, and an eight-week summer holiday starting

in early December. Van Baarle’s excellent grades in her junior year qualified her for university in senior year, which she chose to spend abroad.

“I signed up for the program so that I could have a year traveling,” she said. “School in East Islip is very fun for me as I take mostly elective classes, because none of the grades count for me at home.”

Van Baarle will be returning home to New Zealand in January, but will take with her many exciting memories and a true sense of different cultures.

“Life in New Zealand is pretty similar to life here, but greener, and we’re less patriotic unless we’re going to a rugby game,” she said. “We definitely use more British slang than America. Another big cultural difference is that when people here suggest things for me to do, it usually involves a restaurant or diner. In New Zealand, people would probably suggest hiking trails or rugby games.”

Since arriving in America, she’s also been asked some questions that strike her as quite strange, including whether Kiwis – as New Zealanders are known – live on cliffs, keep penguins as pets and find mountain goats invading their homes.

Even the average school day was a source of cultural discovery.

“The lockers and the cafeteria are so typically American,” she said. “It feels like ‘High School Musical.’ The chairs being attached to the desks also seem very movie-like, and I had thought that yellow school buses only existed in movies!”

A fan of Broadway shows, she particularly enjoyed visiting New York City.

“Living here for 12 months meant that I got to see it in every season, when most tourists only see it in wintertime or summer,” she said.

Students in East Islip High School’s career development program recently learned transportation skills to attend a showing of “The Peanuts Movie.”

The trip provided the opportunity for the students to discuss and

model the use of a train schedule as well as a movie timetable. As part of the program’s travel training curriculum, students then used these skills to board the Long Island Rail Road at the Babylon train station, and completed their journey by walking

from the station to the movie theater.

In preparation for their “Peanuts” excursion, each class read a news article that discussed the history of the Charles M. Schulz comic strip and its development.

Santa in the House Santa was in the house for back-to-back events at East Islip High School, from a game-filled evening to a celebratory breakfast.

The festivities began on the night of December 4th, when teacher Kelly Schwender and 75 students in her child development classes as well as former students hosted their fourth annual Evening with Santa community event in the high school cafeteria.

All of the high schoolers involved put in more than 60 hours of preparation for the evening, which was open to all of the district’s prekindergartners through third-graders.

development students, Jillian Spanier and Serena Zagari, developed this year’s “Candy Land” theme as their National Honor Society leadership project.

The child development students created life-size props to replicate all the characters in the Candy Land board game, as well as huge lollipops, candy canes, cotton candy and gingerbread men, and designed over 15 new games. The attending children each received a laminated Candy Land “Game Trail” map to guide them through the various games and other activities that included candy tattoos, face painting, gingerbread crafts and a

visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus.

At Breakfast with Santa, the school’s annual holiday party for the Toddler High program, parents brought the program’s toddlers in to the school library on December 17th for photos with Santa and the chance to have breakfast with and thank the high school’s juniors and seniors who serve as their children’s “buddies.”

“The toddlers were so happy to see Santa, and it was wonderful to see the high school students take such good care of the little ones and join them in the Santa photos,” said Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer.

Spirit of Generosity As the holidays approached, a spirit of generosity and goodwill filled Islip High School, marking efforts big and small to give back to the community.

The Foreign Language Honor Society collected new, unwrapped toys and gifts for children in need who live in Suffolk County, with the school community once again coming together to donate numerous gifts. James Nelson, a representative of the Suffolk County Department of Social Services, is distributing the gifts directly to the children.

“We extend our sincere appreciation to all the participants in the Islip community for their generosity and support,” said FLHS adviser Karen Maisano. “Kindness is a language everyone understands.”

For the past 16 years, school nurse Janet Schlageter and social worker Donna Ruggiero team up each holiday season to hold their “Mitten Tree” initiative to collect items for those less fortunate.

Students whose families are in need are nominated by the guidance staff and teachers. Ruggiero and Schlageter then contact these families to obtain a “wish list” of presents for every

member. Each gift is written on a paper mitten and hung from a small tree in the school’s main office. Faculty and staff choose a mitten, buy the gift and return it unwrapped to the health office. The gifts are then distributed prior to the beginning of the holiday break.

“The response is always heartwarming and a positive experience for everyone involved,” said Schlageter.

“Although the process can seem daunting at the beginning of every season, as the gifts come in, I am continually reminded of the strong community bonds that make Islip such a special place to work and live.”

Students in the high school’s life skills class were also eager to do their part in giving back to the Islip community via the preparation of food baskets. Starting in October, the class began running a muffin sale before school, with the proceeds used to purchase items for the baskets.

“The budgeting and shopping for the baskets allows the students to work on their math, travel training and community skills while doing something nice for others,” said life skills teacher Linda Colucciello. “For Thanksgiving, the class was able to provide seven families in the community with a holiday basket.”

Additional nonperishable food items donated by the school’s Honor Society enabled the life skills class to create additional baskets for needy families through the winter season.

“The holiday season is an especially important time to realize that we’re all part of a larger family and we’re all going through tough times,” said Mr. Bellone. “There are things that happen in life that create difficult

circumstances and that’s when the community matters. We’re all in this together; we need to work together and support one another. I don’t know a better time to do this than during the holiday season.

That’s why it’s great to be here with this wonderful family. I’m proud to be a part of this.”

CHI also secured housing for the Harrises, a family of five – including children aged five, 16 and 17. The family signed the lease on the house in Bellport, New York during Thursday’s press conference with Mr. Bellone. The Harrises, who have been without a home for 14 months due

to no-fault job loss and a sudden rent increase more than 30 percent, will move into their new house today, just in time to enjoy the holidays.

“It’s always hard to deal with homelessness; this is my first time going through this,” added Nathaniel Harris, father of the family. “It’s really

embarrassing when you struggle even though you work so hard. I worked all of my life. So, to receive this opportunity, that somebody heard me, actually heard me, is amazing.

I appreciate everybody who participated in making this happen for me. Thank you so much.”

At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports.

The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million

Santa came to visit Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck on Sunday, December 13th, bringing with him the joy of the season – and pancakes!

Everyone had a smile on, thanks to the green and red decorations and the pretty Christmas tree.

While volunteers served breakfast, Santa and Mrs. Claus asked the kids what they wanted for Christmas and gave out candy canes.

The fundraiser benefited Camp Pa-QuaTuck, a summer camp and weekend respite for children and young adults with extra physical and mental needs.

Many families attended the breakfast, which was run by The Moriches Rotary Club and staffed by volunteer students from organizations like the Interact Club at the Center Moriches School.

One young student, Isabella Burke, shared her experience as a waitress for the fundraiser: “It

makes you feel bigger, like you’re doing something important,” she said. “It’s fun!”

Over 300 guests were served a pancake breakfast and enjoyed the festive atmosphere. Children and families were also invited to visit with Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, during which time they could have their pictures taken with the couple.

“This year’s breakfast went much smoother than in previous years,” noted event coordinator Maureen Klersy of the Moriches Rotary. “It was faster, more fluid and less congested because we reorganized the workflow. I think guests were a lot happier with the service.”

As the breakfast crowd began to thin out, the Moriches Rotary took the chance to share some happy news and announced the addition of two new members; Laura Traina and John

Gruber were applauded and congratulated on their acceptance into the rotary.

Moriches Rotary and other community organizations help make Camp Pa-QuaTuck possible with their event coordination and sponsorship. Thanks to the support and participation in fundraising events, the camp is able to send several campers to summer sessions free of charge, so that they may enjoy a week-long vacation in a safe, encouraging environment. The campers engage in activities such as swimming, music and movies, socialization, sports, and visiting the petting zoo on camp grounds. Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss—is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives.

Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35

percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not.

The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for

osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Many doctors are learning more about this testing device at www. hologic.com.
