Five Accomplished East Islip Student-Artists Chosen For NYSSBA Exhibition

Five accomplished student-artists from East Islip High School – sophomore Ashley McAdam, senior Naomy Mukai, sophomore Marlana Rebholz, senior Sarah Strick and senior Allan Trinidad – were recently selected for the New

York State Art Teachers Association’s 2022 New York State School Boards Association Student Art Exhibition.

“It is early in the school year, and Ashley, Marlana and Allan have already shown so much skill and talent using their

photographic talents,” teacher Heather Toomey said. “It is such a wonderful opportunity that the NYSATA and NYSSBA offer student artists.”

“Naomy and Sarah are incredibly talented students,” teacher Amarilis Singh said. “Sarah has a

fantastic eye to capture the landscape with her photography, and Naomy has an incredible ability to express her ideas through her work. It was a pleasure to be their photography teacher last year and I am lucky to be able to continue to see their growth as

artists this year in the art department.”

“I am honored to be chosen for the NYSSBA Student Art Exhibition,” Rebholz said. “I really enjoy photography, and it was very exciting to be a part of this show.”

“This exhibition was a

great opportunity to have my artwork displayed alongside other students’ work from schools around Long Island,” Mukai said. “It was a great way to open my eyes to other beautiful artwork. I am grateful for the opportunity to be included.”

Kinney Elementary School was a huge success, filling over a dozen boxes with nonperishable food items for donation to a local food pantry. “The large turnout demonstrates how the RCK community cares for those in need,” Principal Janet Jones said. “The students who participated had fun ‘trotting’ around the back field before the start of school. It was wonderful to see so many participants on a brisk Tuesday morning. The kids were all smiles.” Photo courtesy of East Islip School District

Brentwood School District Celebrates Tree-Lighting Extravaganza

On Dec. 9, the Brentwood Union Free School District celebrated its ninth annual TreeLighting Extravaganza in front of the Brentwood High School’s Sonderling and Ross Centers. The event is a yearly tradition to bring together the community to usher in the holiday season.

A bevy of activities and costumed characters awaited the youngest members of the community, including a station dedicated to writing and mailing letters to Santa; a petting zoo featuring Ralphie the Pig; photo opportunities with characters from the Disney movie “Frozen” as well as

other costumed characters throughout the night. Performances during the evening included holiday songs from the Brentwood High School Chamber Choir, as well as alumna Jennifer Ortiz from the Class of 1991.

The evening concluded with the throwing of the switch by the Brentwood Board of Education and the lighting of the tree to the wonder and awe of the hundreds who enjoyed all the sights and sounds of the event.

Legislator Manuel Esteban Sr, Esq. Host Law Students

Suffolk County Legislator Manuel Esteban Sr, Esq. had the pleasure of hosting a tour and informative discussion at the Suffolk County Legislature for members of Touro Law’s Catholic Law Society, which he was President of when he attended Touro Law Center.

After touring the Legislature and learning about the functions of the Presiding Officer’s Office,

Clerk’s Office, and the Counsel to the Legislature, they had the opportunity to watch the full Legislature in session. Christopher Spinosa, Vice President of the Catholic Law Society had the opportunity to speak during the Public Portion, and thanked Legislator Esteban, Presiding Officer McCaffrey and staff of the Legislature for their hospitality.

“I was given the same

opportunity a few years back to tour the Legislature, and it left a positive impression that planted the seed that I wanted to run for office and help the residents of Suffolk County,” said Legislator Esteban. “You just never know what path your career may go down, and I hope we have inspired these bright students too.”

Suffolk County “Hog” Motorcycle Club

Mounts 4th Annual Ride To Bring Holiday Cheer To Families At Ronald McDonald House NY Metro

Approximately 200 members of the Suffolk County “HOG” (Harley Owners Group) made the 40 mile ride from Oakdale, NY to New Hyde Park, NY on their 4th Annual Holiday Motorcycle Ride to bring toys and cheer to families staying at the Ronald McDonald House.

The ride delivered dozens

of toys that were given out by Santa Claus and raised more than $6,000 for the construction of a new Ronald McDonald House to be located in Suffolk County to serve families there.

The event is the biggest of the year for the Suffolk County HOG group.

“These kids in the

hospital are very sick and their families are under a lot of stress,” said Nicholas Nigro, Organizer of the Annual HOG ride. “They should be able to celebrate for a day. If it brings a smile to their face for one day, that’s all we want to do.”

The event started with a gathering of the riders at the Suffolk County Harley

Davidson, located at 4020 Sunrise Hwy, Oakdale, NY 11769. Members packed the toys on a three-wheeled motorcycle “sleigh” and in a group of Jeeps and the convoy of riders departed at approximately 11 a.m.

The group traveled along Sunrise Highway and Ocean Parkway, with a scenic view of the

beach, before turning north toward the Ronald McDonald House, located at 267-07 76th Ave, Queens, NY 11040, arriving at approximately noon.

Riders disembarked and distributed toys to the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House.

“Events like today put smiles on the faces of the

families that stay here and its just so special,” said Matt Campo, CEO of RMHC NYM. “We will collect enough toys in the last 30 days of the year to last us all of next year. Every time a child comes back to their room there’s something waiting for them.”

Superintendent’s Conference Day Brings Learning, Energy And Affirmation

The Islip School District’s administrators and teachers recently enjoyed a productive day of learning during Superintendent’s Conference Day, participating in numerous activities that provided opportunity for professional development and growth.

The morning kicked off in the high school auditorium with a welcome from Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Michael Giacchetto, accompanied by student Parker Jackson. The assembled staff were entertained by exciting performances by the Islip Middle School cheerleading team and –memorably joined by an acrobatic Superintendent Dr. Dennis P. O’Hara –Islip High School’s varsity kickline, while Director of Fine and Performing Arts Michael Hershkowitz led

the audience in a “cats and boots” vocal exercise demonstrating the value of trust and teamwork.

Training sessions held at both the high school and middle school included topics ranging from an introduction to the physical and mental benefits of yoga, led by Dr. O’Hara with the assistance of Angela Polchinski; a session focused on running and athletic recovery, led by teacher David Claps; and workshops geared toward enhancing teachers’ use of instructional technology such as Fundations, Nearpod, Google and iPads, led by teachers Ashley Bloch, Tim Brush, Thomas Johnston, Michel Herzog, Joe Sabbatino, Maria Scammell, Fred Stroh, Frank Vaughn and Blaine Weisman.

After lunch, guest inspirational speaker John Perricone addressed the

teachers and staff in the high school auditorium. Perricone, a teacher and author of “Zen and the Art of Public School Teaching,” provided insights, guidance and philosophy meant to help educators reconnect with their passion for teaching.

“Superintendent’s Conference Day was a special one for our district,” Dr. O’Hara said. “Teachers, students, administrators and some individuals from outside the district pooled their knowledge, expertise and passion to create a day filled with positive energy, learning and an affirmation of our work that was sorely needed. We are capable of accomplishing great things if we work together, support one another, feel safe leaving our comfort zones, attend to our mental and emotional health, remain grateful,

Helping You Help Others

The Charity of the Month for December is EAC Network

EAC Network is a non-profit organization that empowers, assists and cares for individuals in need. Their objective is to reach individuals within our community through innovative programs that improve quality of life. They have five service areas:

It’s the holiday season; a time to be jolly. A time particularly for children to be happy. On Wednesday, December 14th, EAC Network stepped up to support children in need on Long Island who otherwise would not have the possibility to celebrate this Holiday season like every child deserves to by hosting a Holiday Shopping Spree at Walmart in Farmingdale.

More than a hundred children and young adults, from 4 to 19 years old, were able to get a $100 gift card to spend on gifts of their choice. The event was organized in collaboration with Bethpage Federal Credit Union (BFCU) who donated $10,000 and Summit Health-CityMD, who donated $5,000.

Malik and Adrian, both 14 years old, were so grateful to be part of the shopping spree. With sparkles in their eyes as they explored the isles at Walmart and admired the different items on the shelves, their first stop was at the electronic game area, where they eagerly looked at different options available. The feeling of gratitude for the possibility to acquire a game or two, along with other items, was palpable.

Volunteers from Bethpage Federal Credit Union and Summit HealthCityMD spent the afternoon with each child to assist them as they purchased gifts.

After picking up a game, with excitement and humility Malik said, “I now have only one item in my cart, but I have what I was looking for and it feels good. It feels great.”

number of

States. These children are at a much higher risk of incarceration, teenage

pregnancy, substance abuse, lack of self-esteem and of ending up on public assistance. However, EAC Network’s Chance to Advance program works to bring meaningful change to the lives of at-risk children and youth in foster care by providing positive outlooks and enrichment opportunities through oneon-one mentoring as well as life skills workshops and activities, with the goal of assisting, caring and empowering children to take control of their lives.

If you are in need and believe you can benefit from any of EAC Network’s offerings, please contact Robert Stricoff, Chief Development Officer at EAC Network at Robert.Stricoff@eacnetwork.org or 631.433.1662.

Local Artist Finds New Success

Kristen Hadjoglou, a local artist from Eastport, New York, truly offers something different to the marketplace. Her signature personalized hand-made coloring books are what really launched her career as an artist, but she has expanded to offer various other products as well.

“I was born an artist,” said Kristen. “I always knew that growing up. I attended Rhode Island School of Design, where I earned a Bachelors of Fine Art in Painting. From there, I worked in multiple industries where I was able to express myself creatively. Life surprisingly led me into obtaining a career as a Financial Advisor, which has been very fulfilling since helping others is something I’ve always been passionate about.” However, Hadjoglou never lost her passion for the arts.

As a long-time Eastport resident, she grew attached to many of the local businesses and what made the town so unique. “One day I drew a few pictures on a couple of pages as a gift for our local general store, and it quickly turned into an entire hand-drawn coloring book, which spotlighted the main destinations in the town. What started as a fun project

I worked on in my downtime turned into something that ended up being sold in local businesses and even on Amazon. People love to open up a physical book and see visuals that bring back special memories, and I love being a part of that.”

Since then, Kristen started her own company, Underdog Nation, where she sells her coloring books, stickers, clothing items, journals, puzzles and other fun gifts (such as crayons in the shape of people and stars)! With recent success, she is starting to focus more and more on her career as an artist. The best part is that Kristen can make something for any age group to enjoy.

“I recently finished a project with the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, which was a custom coloring book that’s filled with drawings of local businesses. It brought the Chamber Members together in a special way and is being sold around

Patchogue.” Another special project Kristen recently produced is a personalized coloring book that was used by a local fireman’s foundation for fundraising efforts.

“If you dream it, I can probably find a way to make something fun with it,” said Kristen.

“Whether it’s a single page or a full book, everything I draw is by hand in my personal style and reflects how much I care about the project. I’ve been inspired by all things local and historic, and it’s been fun to find a new way to teach kids in our community about local history. Some other projects I’ve worked on came from my love of my Gen X childhood, whether that be vintage toys, movie quotes, thrift shopping or collecting. Each project differs, but I absolutely love what I do, and that means I usually get things done pretty fast! I’m living that dream phrase, ‘If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.’ Looks like I’m almost there.”

If you, your business, Chamber of Commerce, town or the like are interested in more information, please contact Kristen today at 631.245.8090 or kkhudn@ gmail.com.

In October, eight team members competed in the Empire Eclipse tournament, an international online competition that comprised teams from seven different countries. The case was a criminal matter in which the federal government charged the defendant with computer hacking and creating a danger to the public by sending a false incoming missile alert. East Islip competed against schools

from South Korea, California, Oregon and Tennessee, and went 2-2 over four rounds of intense competition. Senior Jacob Franchi was recognized with an Honorable Mention for Outstanding Attorney. In November, 17 of East Islip’s mock trial students traveled to Harvard University for the annual Harvard Mock Trial Association Angela R Mathew High School Seminars. The students attended lectures and worked one-on-one with reigning national champion Harvard Mock Trial members to improve their trial advocacy skills.

The fact pattern was a negligence tort in which the plaintiff was suing a small plane company for the crash that killed her husband. East Islip’s students worked on both the plaintiff and defense sides of the case and competed in trial rounds against schools from Florida and Pennsylvania. Two students were recognized with awards for their performances: junior Julia Fink earned an Outstanding Attorney designation and freshman Nicholas Cusumano was named an Outstanding Witness.

The Girl Scouts Of Suffolk County’s Annual Holiday Lightshow Expands Its Annual Celebrations

The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County and County Executive Steve Bellone are excited to announce the Girl Scout Holiday Light Show will be returning to Smith Point County Park in Shirley for the 19th consecutive year. This year, the drive-thru event which features more than a mile of illuminated holidaythemed displays, will take place through December 30th . In addition to the annual drive-thru holiday attraction, new to this year’s event, GSSC will also create an incredible walk-through Enchanted Forest and Holiday Village featuring 200ft light displays, photos with Santa, a picnic area for s’mores, music, and games at Southaven County Park in Yaphank. Along with being a favorite holiday attraction among families from throughout Long

Island, the seasonal event serves as an important fundraiser for Girl Scouts of Suffolk County to help expand the access girls throughout Suffolk County have to the empowering Girl Scout experience.

“The Girl Scout Holiday Light Show is an event we look forward to every year, and we are delighted to bring it back for families across Long Island to enjoy this holiday season,” said Tammy Severino, CEO and President of Girl Scouts of Suffolk County. “We are thrilled to be able to expand our annual traditions by introducing our new Enchanted Forest at Southaven County Park, which will host even more fun family activities. We hope everyone will come to join us in this amazing holiday tradition and are looking forward to creating new memories

with all of you!”

Girl Scouts of Suffolk County’s annual holiday light show is a drivethrough show along a 1.5-mile trail at Smith Point County Park Campgrounds filled with dazzling holiday light displays, created by our Girl Scouts, Staff, and members of our communities throughout Suffolk County. The holiday event features more than 100 fun artistic, holiday-themed displays. This year, the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County have added 5 exhibits that were conceptualized by local, award-winning Girl Scouts.

“I am so excited to welcome back the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County Holiday Light Show for the 19th year in a row,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “This year’s show is

expected to be even bigger and better with multiple exciting new holiday attractions. Not only is this a fun family tradition, it also serves as a critical fundraising event to ensure girls throughout the county are able to reach their full potential.”

The Girl Scout Holiday Light Show will be open daily through December 30th, excluding December 24th and 25th, from 5 pm to 9 pm. The Enchanted Forest will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 5 pm to 9 pm through December 18th and will run from December 26th to December 30th.

Since outgrowing its space at Camp Edey in Bayport, in 2016, the fundraising event has been held at Smith Point County Park. The light displays are assembled and built-in part, by GSSC staff and dedicated

volunteers from PSEG Long Island, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1049 and Local 25, and the Long Island Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association. Proceeds from the Holiday Light Show and Enchanted Forest benefit girl leadership programs as well as provide financial assistance for girls to join Girl Scouts and attend our summer camp program.

Online pricing will be available, or tickets can be purchased at the gates with a credit card. For more information, visit: https://www. gssclightshow.com/
