Eighth-graders in AnnMarie Mills’ life science class at Islip Middle School recently put on their waders and participated in a the annual “A Day in the Life of a River” field trip. With the help of natural resource experts and several other middle school teachers, the students engaged in hands-on citizen science exploration at Carlls River in Babylon.

The students were captivated by the natural wonders of the forest with the guidance of renowned Seatuck Environmental Association naturalist and conservationist John Turner, who transformed a leisurely stroll through the woods into an interactive learning experience.

Students identified birds, native plants and insects on their journey as well as experiencing firsthand the harmful effects of plastic pollution on Long Island’s freshwater ecosystems.

“Every step these young naturalists took that day brought them

closer to becoming future conservationists themselves,” said Mills.

“A Day in the Life,” coordinated by the Brookhaven National Laboratory, the Central Pine Barrens Commission, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Seatuck Environmental Association and the Suffolk County Water Authority, focuses on students exploring and collecting firsthand information to learn how their river fits into the larger ecosystem. At Carlls River, the students examined the physical and chemical aspects of each aquatic ecosystem, such as salinity, the amount of sediments, nitrates, phosphates, and oxygen levels in the water, as well as conducting biodiversity inventories of the flora and fauna in and around the rivers and estuary from the headwaters to the mouth of the river. Their work will help to determine

This year the students enjoyed using a variety of nets purchased by the district – including a seining net, dip nets and a cast net – to capture freshwater critters.

“The students were thrilled to put the nets to good use,” said Mills.

“The day was filled with discoveries including crayfish, bluegills, a largemouth bass and pumpkinseed fish.”

PSEG Long Island Is Prepared for First Winter Storm PSEG Long Island is closely monitoring and ready for the season’s first forecast of snow, sleet and rain expected to hit the service area Thursday. In preparation, PSEG Long Island has performed system checks on critical transmission & distribution equipment and ensured the availability of critical materials, fuel and other supplies.

“If the weather conditions cause interruptions to service, we are prepared and will respond and restore outages safely and quickly,” said John O’Connell, vice president of transmission & distribution at PSEG Long Island. “Whether it’s the first storm of the season or three consecutive storms at the end of the season, like we had last March, we are committed to providing safe, reliable service to our customers.”

Heavy snow and icing on lines and trees and windy conditions can increase the possibility of downed wires and power outages. Snowy roads and poor visibility make drivers more likely to lose control and strike utility poles, which can also cause wires to come down.

A full complement of personnel will be on hand to deal with any outages caused by the wintry weather.

Contractors, including tree crews, will also be available to assist the utility’s own skilled workforce if necessary.

PSEG Long Island works throughout the year to prepare for extreme weather and to make sure the energy grid is reliable.

That includes continually trimming tree limbs away from power lines, enhancing technology to detect and restore outages and advancing FEMA reliability projects across the service territory—all in order to provide greater reliability and to help prevent outages during storms.

Avoid Surprise, Winterize (NAPSI)—As the weather gets colder, winterizing your vehicle should be a top priority.

The nonprofit Car Care Council recommends that motorists perform a sixpoint winter maintenance check of areas that are particularly affected by driving in rough weather.

“Harsh weather can stress out a vehicle, as well as its driver,” explained Rich White, executive director of the nonprofit Car Care Council. “A vehicle that’s properly prepared for the elements can help you avoid an unplanned road emergency when the weather takes a sudden turn for the worse.”

Six-Point Vehicle Check 1. Battery—Cold weather is hard on batteries, so it’s wise to check the battery and charging system for optimum performance.

Because batteries don’t always give warning signs before they fail, it’s advisable to replace batteries that are more than three years old.

2.

Antifreeze— Antifreeze (coolant) should be flushed and refilled at least every two years in most vehicles. Don’t add 100 percent antifreeze, however.

Surprisingly, full-strength antifreeze

actually has a lower freeze point than when mixed with water.

3. Brakes—Have the brake system checked.

Brakes are critical to vehicle safety and particularly important on icy or snow-covered roads.

4. Tires—Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure, including the spare. If you’ll be driving where snow and ice are a problem, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads. Check tire pressure weekly, as tires lose pressure when temperatures drop.

5.

Oil—Be diligent about changing the oil at recommended intervals and check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time. Consider changing to low-viscosity oil in winter, as it will flow more easily between moving parts when cold. In subzero driving temperatures, drop oil weight from 10W-30 to 5W-30 as thickened oil can make it hard to start the car.

6. Lights and Wipers— Make sure all exterior and interior lights are working so you can see and be seen. Check the fluid level in the windshield washer reservoir and replace

wiper blades that are torn, cracked or don’t properly clean your windshield.

In addition, the council recommends a thorough vehicle inspection by a trusted professional service technician as winter magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling.

Drivers should keep their vehicle’s gas tank at least half-full to decrease the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing and stock an emergency kit with an ice scraper and snow brush, jumper cables, flashlight, blanket, extra clothes, bottled water, dry food snacks and needed medication.

The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers.

December’s Charity of the Month is:

Options for Community Living, Inc. is a local not for profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in need develop their fullest potential for independent living.

Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties!

Options services are person-centered, collaborative and recovery-oriented. Care coordinators help to improve individual health by arranging medical care, doctor visits, participation in mental health treatment and substance use disorder services, pediatric health and specialty services for children, linkage to community groups and resources and more. Additionally, the agency offers Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) to help individuals recovering from mental illness and/ or addiction.

Their agency operates a thrift shop located at 392 Hawkins Avenue in Lake Ronkonkoma.

This thrift shop is open Tuesday – Saturday and relies on donations and community volunteers.

The shop can be contacted at (631) 676-4579 and is in need of volunteers to help with sorting, tagging, working the register and additional duties. Volunteers must be 18 or older.

Additionally, this organization takes donations of personal hygiene items (shampoo, hand soap, lotion and toothbrushes) and household cleaning necessities (laundry detergent and cleaners.)

Lastly, this organization is available to conduct presentations at schools or in the community regarding their programs and/or on matters pertaining to HIV/AIDS and mental illness.

When to Abandon the “Thinking” Mind One cannot accomplish anything of great significance with the thinking mind in the way. As I sit down to write this week’s column, I notice that I am in my head, which will not do, so I turn my attention to Miles Davis’ Blue is Green song playing on my phone. The soothing rhythmic sound of jazz takes me out of my thinking mind and places my energy back to that intangible place where creativity is born.

It’s between the dream-state consciousness and waking consciousness, where anything seems possible, and we do not question the validity of our ideas.

While it’s true that our brain is the machine that powers and processes the application of practical knowledge, those magic “aha” moments that hit us seemingly out of nowhere and have the supernatural ability to transform our lives, make themselves known when we are doing just about anything other than “thinking.” If you’ve experienced this even once in your life, you surely know what I mean.

A 2016 article in The Atlantic, titled, “The Trippy State Between Wakefulness and Sleep” states, “There is a brief time, between waking and sleep, when reality begins to warp. Rigid conscious thought starts to dissolve into the gently lapping waves of early stage dreaming, and the world becomes a little more hallucinatory; your thoughts a little more untethered.”

It’s that untethered state, when we forget about time and space, and who we are supposed to be, that we do not judge our ideas or our creative impulses. It’s similar to a young child’s state of consciousness, before they learn to be self-conscious and selfcritical.

A January 2018 Wall Street Journal article titled, “For Babies, Life May Be A Trip,” states, “Fascinating new neuroscience research suggests that when adults dream or have psychedelic experiences, their brains are functioning more like children’s brains. It appears that the experience of babies and young children is more like dreaming

or tripping than like our usual grown-up consciousness.” She goes on to say, “Like most adults, I spend most of my waking hours thinking about getting things done. Scientists have discovered that when we experience the world in this way, the brain sends out signals along the established, stable, efficient networks that we develop as adults.”

The part of the brain where adults tend to spend most of their waking hours will help keep you safe, get to work on time, and remember to pick up the dry cleaning, but it’s not your friend when it comes to living outside the box or taking creative risks.

In order to experience life in a more dynamic, passionate and creative way, we need to develop strategies for breaking us out of the thinking, critical mind so that we are able to tap into the higher collective consciousness from where all creativity and inspired ideas flow forth.

How To Recognize Depression To help you tell if you or someone you care about is suffering from depression, the experts at the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) offer these warning signs: • Feeling sad and/or irritable • Changes in weight or appetite • Difficulty sleeping • Feelings of guilt, hopelessness or worthlessness • Inability to

concentrate, remember things or make decisions • Thoughts of death or suicide.

How To Handle Depression If these symptoms look familiar, here are some things to do right now: • Recognize depression early. Depression can happen to anyone. It’s not a character defect, a weakness or a shameful condition. It’s a serious disorder that no one is immune to.

• Engage in your life.

If you are depressed, you may feel like you don’t

have an ounce of energy or motivation to tackle depression.

Recovery, however, requires your active participation. Be willing to take the first step, even though it’s not easy.

• Build your skills. Learn why you’re vulnerable to depression and specific ways to become more resilient by breaking unhealthy patterns of thought and behavior.

Developing good coping and relationship skills can reduce both the frequency and severity of depression

episodes.

• Find the right therapist.

Talking through one’s stressors and understanding the underlying causes is a proven way to effectively treat depression. Look for therapists with training and experience in treating depression, as well as someone who is warm, supportive and goal oriented. Use short telephone interviews to find a good fit with potential therapists. Ask about how they approach problems like yours.
