A Draft Design Report/ Environmental Assessment (DDR/EA) and all supporting documentation for the Operational Improvements: Long Island Expressway (I495) at Crooked Hill Road (CR 13) Project will be available for public review and comment beginning on December 9, 2019 and continuing through the public comment deadline on January 10, 2020.

The DDR/EA has been prepared to assess the project’s effect on the quality of the human environment in accordance with the requirements of the Council on Environmental Quality regulations for implementing the procedural provisions of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), as defined in Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Parts 1500-1508, and the Federal Highway Administration’s

Those traveling eastbound on the LIE, must take Exit 52, wait at a traffic signal at Commack Road (CR 4) and travel another half mile. Travelers continuing eastbound must get on the Sagtikos State Parkway and take Exit S2.

This project will modify the interchange of the Long Island Expressway (I-495) at Crooked Hill Road in the Towns of Islip and Smithtown, Suffolk County by adding two

In 1992, John Theissen held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities. However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. The Islip Town Board is proud to have recently approved a resolution to waive the Town fee for a marriage license, when either party applying is an active duty member of the US Armed Forces.

Marriage licenses are $40.

In August, 2019, New York State waived its portion of $22.50. The Islip Town Board followed suit, voting unanimously at the October Town Board meeting to waive the remaining $17.50.

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, along with members of the Town Board, unanimously approved the resolution at the meeting.

Recent changes to New York State’s Domestic Relations Law now allows for Townships to waive their portion of the fee.

“In the Town of Islip, active members of the military can now obtain a marriage license entirely for FREE,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

Students Build Homes For Birds High school students from Islip Academic Center walked into the cafeteria at Tecumseh Elementary School, bearing 20 birdhouses they made for the grade school students.

The two groups of students came together and painted the birdhouses so they could be brought home.

Islip Academic Center (IAC) and Tecumseh Elementary School (TES) are both Eastern Suffolk BOCES schools.

IAC provides support and services to high school aged students with special needs, and TES provides special education series to

students from kindergarten to sixth grade.

The students at IAC built and painted the birdhouses with white primer during their woodshop class. When they visited the students at TES, they brought colorful paint, stickers, glitter, glue, and other art supplies so the grade school students could decorate the birdhouses as they saw fit. During the visit, the older students from IAC helped the elementary school students in a variety of ways. Some students brainstormed ideas that could be painted on the birdhouses, while another

used his artistic ability to draw an outline that his younger partner could color in.

The opportunity to work with students from another school was beneficial to the high school students from IAC. “A lot of our students don’t have siblings at home,” said David Rosman, teacher of Carpentry at IAC. “This gives them an opportunity to provide mentorship to someone that they could see as a younger brother or sister.

It’s a way for them to give back, and see how much more there is outside of high school.”

SADD Club visited each fifth grade class at JFK and RCK to present information on drugs, alcohol, bullying and what to expect in the middle school. SADD members also ran the districtwide Red Ribbon contest, asking fifth graders to submit creative anti-drug slogans.

The younger students then wrote inspirational congratulatory letters to graduating seniors, reminding them of the lessons they had just learned from SADD, which will be presented at next

June’s commencement.

“Having the high school students connect with the fifth graders, helping them learn how to avoid destructive decisions, and then the fifth graders relaying that message back to the graduating seniors is so worthwhile,” said Bridget Lopiccolo, the SADD Club’s adviser.

“Hopefully every message is heard and practiced, and we can stop this scary epidemic and end drug addiction.”

Stanton Named New Director Of Careers And Student Services Jason Stanton has been named the new director of careers and student services for the East Islip School District, replacing the retired Israel Malinowitzer.

Stanton had served as an assistant principal at both East Islip Middle School and East Islip High School since 2013. He previously worked as a social studies teacher and director of evening high school for the Hicksville School District.

Photography Students Explore Arboretum Guided by teachers Joy Taylor and Heather Toomey, East Islip High School photography students recently enjoyed a field trip to Bayard Cutting Arboretum. While cold, it was a sunny day and proved conducive for taking photos. Some of the students were working on shooting film photography for their narrative project

while also completing a digital scavenger hunt.

“Bayard is such a beautiful and serene place,” said Taylor. “I’m glad we brought the photo students as many of them had never been there before.”

“It was a fun learning experience and a great environment to be able to practice using my camera

skills and have questions answered by my teacher,” said Katryna Mullen.

“It is extremely valuable to the learning experience to be able to go to a beautiful local spot and help students on location have a better understanding of their cameras and natural lighting,” said Toomey.

“We also had a lot of fun as a class.”

Catch-A-Career Breakfast

East Islip High School’s career exploration program recently held its annual Catch-A-Career Breakfast at the Irish Coffee Pub, allowing 50 business professionals in various career fields and 70 juniors and seniors to meet, network and discuss careers. Set up like a speed dating event, Catch-ACareer helps students understand and decide on their future jobs.

“This event was awesome because I got to speak with

businesspeople and ask them important questions about their fields,” said senior Eric Berke. “Most students are not usually given that opportunity, but through this program, we get to do that. Before the breakfast, we practiced and went over how to prepare for the event, which helped me think about the questions before the breakfast and make the most of it.”

“East Islip is a step above most schools in

this area because we have been holding this event for 16 years, recognizing that students need to be college and career ready, which is what this program provides,” said Bridget Lopiccolo, who developed and organizes Catch-ACareer with fellow teacher Paul McHugh.

In the program’s next step, students can participate in Mentor Me, spending a day shadowing a professional in their desired career field.

First Annual Health & Wellness 5K Walk/Run

Suffolk County Legislator Sam Gonzalez of the 9th District in collaboration with Pastor Steve Mangum of The House of Judah (THOJ) in Sayville, hosted the first Annual Health & Wellness 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, November 16, in Brentwood.

Legislator Gonzalez and Pastor Mangum created the Health & Wellness 5K Walk/Run (a USA Track & Field (USATF) certified course) and Expo to promote the benefits that come from eating a balanced diet, engaging in physical activity, and getting out in nature. In keeping with the Health

& Wellness theme, the 5K started on the tranquil Sisters of St. Joseph campus in Brentwood, proceeded through the neighborhood, and returned.

The windy, frigid weather could not chill the spirit of the attendees.

To stay warm, entrants did calisthenics, ran in place, and participated in an impromptu Step / Line Dance. Children 12-years and under ran with all their might to win the gold, silver, and bronze medals in the kids 1/2–mile event.

EMTs from Brentwood Legion Ambulance were on standby while the Heart and Health Mobile Medical

Unit performed free blood pressure screenings in their state-of-the-art van.

Pastor Mangum stated, “I have known for some time that a healthy lifestyle helps to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

The event was hosted by the Early Childhood Education program, which enlisted the help of the Culinary class to cater the event.

Milliken Technical Center (MTC) is part of the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, which is the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES. The Academy has campuses in Bellport, Oakdale, and Riverhead.

In preparation for the event, Early Childhood Education students incorporated

a Thanksgiving theme into their lessons. They read stories to their preschool students about Thanksgiving, and completed turkey-themed art projects. The students also coordinated with the Culinary class to ensure that a proper holiday feast would be the star of the event.

The Culinary students prepared and served turkey sandwiches with gravy and stuffing, garlic broccoli, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese. For dessert, they provided berry cobbler and vanilla ice cream.

“This is fun, but it’s also a nuanced lesson for the students,” said Gini Wagner, Teacher of Family and Consumer Sciences at MTC. “The students are expected to

observe the room – some of these parents might have more than one child with them and could be overwhelmed. It’s their job to recognize that situation and smoothly step in and be there in support of the parents. They should be meeting with parents, talking about their students, and socializing.

For the preschoolers, this is fun, but for my students, this is an important lesson in networking.”

Noticing a pair of preschool students shyly approaching the dessert station – two Early Childhood Education students went to their aid.

The older students helped the preschoolers to order a scoop of ice cream – capping off the day with a sweet treat.
