Food for Fines at the Library

W

hen a Brentwood Public Library patron donates a non-perishable food item for each overdue library book, DVD, CD or video game during the holiday Food for Fines drive, the library waives patron late fees. Food for Fines is an annual event that raises awareness and provides relief from fines for library patrons. This year, more than 1,100 pounds of food was collected and donated to Pronto of Long Island, 128 Pine Aire Drive in Bay Shore.

to families in need, especially at this time of year, when everyone wants to be able to celebrate the holidays as best they can, during a time when gratitude is so crucial to finding everyday happiness.

The food items contributed by classrooms throughout the school will go to SSCM’s Parish

Outreach Program in Deer Park. Local parishes and their volunteers are the lifeblood of parish social ministry on Long Island, where across the county, combined parish ministries include thousands of volunteers and serve as many as 75,000 people in need each year.

Southside Hospital employees from various departments addressed the students at Central Islip school district’s Mulligan Middle School on October 21st.

Harold Fernandez, MD, chief of cardiovascular surgery at Southside Hospital and system director of surgical heart failure at Northwell Health, was the event’s keynote speaker. He told the young audience about how he overcame adversity – being an undocumented immigrant – to become a top New York physician.

“It has been important for me throughout my career to work very hard to ensure my success,” Dr. Fernandez said. “I would encourage all young people to put in the appropriate amount of effort into their school work and studies.”

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was joined by local community groups and Town employees at Casamento Park today, where almost 600 Thanksgiving baskets were distributed to groups that will aid the less fortunate in our town. In addition, the Town purchased more than 584 turkeys through funding provided by Islip Food for Hope.

“Every year our employees donate their time and supplies to help provide an authentic holiday experience for families in our community who are facing hardship,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “I want to also thank the Islip Food for Hope Organization, led

by MaryAnn Pfeiffer, for their tireless efforts to end hunger in our town.”

Fifty of the donated turkeys came from Rechler Equity Partners, in conjunction with the Town’s Foreign Trade Zone.

“We are proud to support the Food for Hope Program and its efforts to provide those in need with a delicious meal this Thanksgiving,” said Mitchell Rechler, Managing Partner of Rechler Equity Partners.

Food for Fines

When a Brentwood Public Library patron donates a non- perishable food item for each overdue library book, DVD, CD, or video game during the holiday Food for Fines drive, the library waives patron late fees.

Food for Fines is an annual event that raises awareness and provides relief from fines for library patrons. This year, more than 1,100 pounds of food was collected and donated to Pronto of Long Island, 128 Pine Aire Drive, Bay

Shore, NY. This year’s holiday Food for Fines drive, November 6th through 12th, has helped provide relief and much needed holiday spirit for individuals and families this holiday season.

Class of 2016’s Peter Liegey has likely run out of space on his walls for all the honors, awards and scholarships he received as he exited the hallowed halls of Saints Cyril and Methodius upon graduating.

Always an active student, Peter participated in

School Band, Long Island Honor Band, SSCM Cross Country and Basketball teams, was a member of the Distinguished Scholars program, Gifted and Talented program, and the Shakespeare Festival performances each year.

Within the parish, Peter has been an Altar Server, was active in the CYO Travel and Intramural basketball teams.

He coached and refereed in the CYO Intramural Basketball program, volunteered at SSCM’s Family Festival, Breakfast with Santa and even worked in the kitchen during SSCM Bingo nights.

the dorms are nice,” Shea said about choosing Post, located in Waterbury, Connecticut. “It appealed to me because it was also a small school and that made it very personable. Even when I visited, everyone said hello because everyone knew everyone.”

Shea, who plays defense, was a member of East Islip’s junior varsity team from eighth grade through sophomore year, and on the varsity in her junior and senior years. Shea also played travel lacrosse for the Suffolk County All Stars.

Toys for Tots began in 1947 when the wife of Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR handcrafted a Raggedy Ann doll and asked her husband to deliver the doll to an organization which would give it to a needy child at Christmas.

When they realized that no such organization existed, they decided to start one.

That Christmas a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. That pilot

program was so successful that the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign and since then has distributed over 370 million toys to more than 173 million children.

Paws of War

In honor of Veterans Day, the Islip School District teaching community came together for a Jeans Day fundraiser on November 10th, joining an Islip Middle School initiative that raised more than $1,000 for Paws of War. Serving as special guests for the day were Lionel Bauman, a Vietnam veteran from Baldwin and Paws of War recipient, and his service dog Mr. Wrinkles.

Paws of War is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping military veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury, pairing them

with rescued dogs that are trained to serve them.

“There are many outstanding veteran organizations out there that perform great services, but we were looking for a local organization that would help out veterans in our community,” said Principal Timothy Martin. “Our effort was coordinated to raise funds for an organization that helps returning veterans adjust to civilian life.”

Throughout the day, Bauman and his canine companion visited other schools in the district, including the high school and Sherwood Elementary School.

“Our students and staff were very excited to meet Lionel and Mr. Wrinkles,” said Sherwood Principal Chad Walerstein. “They were lined up awaiting their arrival, and really appreciated that they visited each classroom.”

“Coming together as a community to support our veterans is a worthwhile cause, and something that we should all take part in regularly,” said Islip Middle School assistant principal James Cameron.

“Paws of War reaches far beyond Long Island, and we are happy to support its efforts to assist American veterans.”

My Little Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

Christmas has always been one of my favorite holidays.

From when I was a child, there was something about the twinkling lights, the anticipation of a first snowfall, and of course the presents under the tree that evoked just a bit of… magic, really.

All these years later, some of the mystery may be gone, but the sentiment remains the same.

As this particular holiday season approached, it was difficult not to let some of the melancholy feelings seep in. This has been a year of multiple losses and sadness for my family, and somehow the thought of “celebrating” seemed wrong and, well, downright impossible. How to carry on traditions when so

much has changed…

For me, even the prospect of decorating, a task I had always looked forward to with great enthusiasm, had lost some of its luster. Was it appropriate?

Was it worth going through all the trouble of digging out boxes, climbing stepladders and assembling a tree when my heart wasn’t truly in it? I didn’t know.

As the weeks passed and Thanksgiving came and went, I needed to make a decision; and so, I reached a compromise of sorts. Having recently had the privilege to inherit some of my grandparents’ more prized Christmas decorations – including several gorgeous, hand-painted ceramic figurines made by my grandmother – I decided it would only be right to display them.

And so, I set out to find that happy medium, of honoring all the wonderful memories I had compiled from years past – but not going overboard.

I chose to keep it simple… white lights in the windows, greenery outside, and special emphasis on all those holiday tokens I had acquired from Grandma and Grandpa’s house.

There will be plenty of years to go all out, to deck the halls from top to bottom with flashy colored lights and six-foot trees and tinsel and holly galore. But not this year.

This year, I choose to focus on family – on those who are no longer with us, and on those we are still so lucky to be celebrating with.

Here’s to remembering what’s most important at this time of year, and always.

Saluting Veterans

East Islip’s John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools held their annual Veterans Day celebrations on November 10th, with students inviting family and friends who have served their country to attend and be honored.

At RCK, a gallery walk of heroes was displayed on the cafeteria walls, which students proudly showed the attending veterans.

The entire school said the Pledge of Allegiance, led by members of the local Cub Scouts Troop 38, and remained standing for “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Patriotic music filled the halls while every class lined up ready to cheer as students led their guests

and paraded through the school.

“This has been a longstanding tradition that is heartwarming and cherished,” said RCK Principal Hillary Bromberg. “Smiles and tears of happiness were seen on our veterans’ faces.”

At JFK’s parade, fifth-graders lined the hallways, holding up patriotic drawings as the veterans and the students who invited them made their way to the school’s cafeteria. There, several orchestra and band students, the fifth-grade chorus and selected fourthgrade students performed a selection of patriotic songs, while other students

delivered a presentation of accolades for the veterans.

“Our young musicians demonstrated selfconfidence and tremendous talent as they entertained the veterans who attended, and our presenters reminded all of us to acknowledge and thank those brave men and women who have served in the military,” said JFK Principal Deborah Smith.

“It brought such a profound sense of community to all who attended, both the students who had invited veterans as guests, and the veterans themselves. This meaningful, authentic experience will surely be an important memory for the children.”

HALLOWEEN SPIRIT - The students in Mrs. Bergendorff’s fifth grade class at Gardiner Manor School helped to make Halloween a little more fun for a deployed service member. The students created cards containing drawings and jokes to send to the service member, currently deployed to Afghanistan. She sent a photo back to the students to thank them for their cards.

Seasonal Success East Islip High School’s STARS club held its annual food drive on November 17th, aided by students from the school’s National Honor Society.

The communitywide charitable event, organized

and coordinated by seniors Brian Hartmann and Justin Jacobowitz, continued in its ongoing and successful mission of providing food for the needy.

“Thanks to the efforts of all students and parents

involved, we were able to make donations to the food pantries of our local churches and help many families during this holiday season,” said club adviser Nicole Vincenti.
