The Charity of the Month for December is: John Theissen Children’s Foundation www.jtcf.org John Theissen Children’s Foundation is Celebrating Their

28th

Holiday Season Helping Sick & Underprivileged Children! the beginning of what has become the year round organization, John Theissen Children’s Foundation.

Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities.

However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. They also provide hospitals and childcare facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfill patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age and younger) and they assist sick and underpriviledged children in other ways that are needed.

On December 5th at 6:30PM, John Theissen Children’s Foundation will be hosting A Night of Champions Holiday Gala!

This Gala will feature one of New York’s biggest and best live auctions, great raffles, door prizes, gourmet dishes provided by 2nd Street Gourmet, desserts provided

by Francesco’s Bakery and a VIP Lounge Meet & Greet with celebrity professional athletes. Admission is $50 and VIP admission is $350. To purchase a ticket, please visit

John Theissen Children’s Foundation began after their Executive Director & Founder, John Theissen, had stayed at Schneider’s Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park when he was 17 years old. John needed to have brain surgery for a brain tumor that he unfortunately developed.

The day he walked into the hospital he met a 7 year old girl named Tasha. She spent many hours with John for the next few days, always trying to make him happy.

Tasha received very little family support, however she expected her family to attend a holiday party that was sponsored by the hospital staff.

Unfortunately they did not attend. John was too ill to take her, so his family did. When Santa asked her what she had wanted she replied, “I would like a teddy bear for my friend upstairs.”

John felt fortunate to be that friend. Tasha’s positive attitude and generous spirit inspired John. Once he got out of the hospital he wanted to help children just like her.

In 1992, John held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

COLLEGE AND CAREER FAIR - Recently, the Bay Shore Guidance Department hosted its annual College and Career Fair. There were nearly 115 representatives from colleges all over the country, local labor unions and the military. Nearly 400 Bay Shore High School students attended the event. College and union representatives were very impressed with our students and families and stated multiple times how much they enjoy visiting the high school. Our students took advantage of making contacts with representatives from many various colleges, while engaging in conversations which will assist them in the college application process. Many thanks to the High School Guidance Department, the Guidance Secretarial Staff, Mike Smith, John Graziano and the custodial staff, as well as Mike Sutch and the security staff.

Girls Lacrosse Players Sign To Play In College Four terrific East Islip High School senior girls lacrosse players – Hannah Calarco, Alexa Fusco, Alyssa Levy and Rachel Schlesinger – signed national letters of intent on Nov. 13, committing to continue their athletic careers next fall in college.

Calarco, who plays midfield/attack, will attend Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina, where she plans to major in physical

education. An Honor Roll student, she has been on the varsity lacrosse team for four years, was named a Scholar-Athlete and earned 2019 All-County honorable mention. Calarco also played for the Legacy travel lacrosse team.

Fusco, a middle defender, will play for Long Island University team, where she will major in mathematics and secondary education.

A member of the varsity team since her freshman

year, Fusco earned AllDivision honors for the last two years and the Suffolk Zone award. A multisport athlete, she played on the varsity basketball team for three years as well as the varsity soccer team for all four years, earning All-Division and All-County honors in the latter sport. Fusco serves as president of the school’s Girls Leaders Club and vice president of the Foreign Language National Honor

She also played for three years on EI’s varsity field hockey team, earning AllCounty honors twice as well as All-Division and

All-Tournament honors; on the school’s basketball team for one year; and for the Legacy travel lacrosse team since seventh grade.

Levy is a member of the school’s National Honor Society, Foreign Language National Honor Society, Girls Leaders Club and Yearbook Club.

Schlesinger, a goalie, signed with Rollins University in Winter Park, Florida, where she plans to study pre-med and major in biology. A four-year varsity lacrosse starter, she earned All-Division honors. As an athlete, Schlesinger earned Scholar-Athlete and High

Minds in Motion awards and was also a member of both the East Islip varsity swim team and Legacy lacrosse travel team since seventh grade. She is a member of the school’s SADD club and Key Club.

“It has been an incredible experience watching this group develop as athletes,” said Steven Levy, East Islip’s varsity girls head coach. “I have had the pleasure of being in the front row throughout their careers. They are a special group of athletes, students and members of our community.”
