he varsity football team beat Sayville on November 17th at Stony Brook University’s LaValle Stadium to claim the Division III Suffolk County Championship.

The 42-35 upset victory for the Redmen over the previously unbeaten defending champion Golden Flashes featured a standout performance by quarterback Kyle Fleitman, who carried the ball 28 times for 248 yards and three touchdowns, while throwing for a fourth.

Saint Cyril and Methodius School’s Joseph Traverso was the 2016 graduation “Class Speaker” and is currently enjoying his freshman year at St. Anthony’s H.S. in Huntington. Reminiscing over his time at SSCM from when he stepped through the doors of the school for his first day of Pre-K ten years ago, Joseph reflected upon how SSCM had prepared him, since day one, for the exciting challenges ahead at St. Anthony’s. In Joseph’s own words, “SSCM’s teachers have taught me life skills I will never forget...even sacrificing their own after-school time to help us prepare for our high school entrance exams.”

Among an impressive list of accomplishments, Joseph was recognized during SSCM graduation, for excellence in science.

He received awards for Altar Service and participating in School Band. He was the recipient of the Monsignor Rooney scholarship, a Parents Association scholarship,

SSCM’s Senior Club scholarship and was the winner of the SSCM 2016 Cyrilian Award.

While exceeding academic expectations throughout his time at SSCM, Joseph simultaneously poured himself into a wide variety of extracurricular activities, including Honor Band, Children’s Choir, Altar Service, Breakfast

Journeying through History

Fifth Avenue School celebrated Native American History Month with a visit from the Journeys Through Native American Territory company.

A life-size teepee was erected in the gym, and students not only got the chance to have a mock

pow-wow inside the teepee, but they learned about the Native American culture and many of the traditions and observances acknowledged by Native Americans.

Students walked through the touch museum display to get an up close encounter

with artifacts, tools, and items of clothing native to the indigenous peoples.

The day helped to create a bridge of understanding between our students and the Native people of our great country.

Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School honored former principal Jeannette Feminella and breast cancer awareness with a Power of Pink Day on October 31st.

Staff and students wore jeans and pink tops as a sign of unity. Each staff

member wearing jeans donated $10 for a plaque in Feminella’s name to be placed in perpetuity at the school. Principal Brian McCarthy also set up a Pink Penny jar for any spare change that students wished to contribute.

Prepping for Winter Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter is pleased to announce that the Town has completed its winter storm preparations for the upcoming season. Sand and salt stockpiles are at maximum capacity, and all necessary equipment is being made ready for the first significant snowfall.

Outside contractors have been contacted and will

be on-call to supplement the Town’s own plowing efforts, if needed.

“Winter storms can result in dangerous and unsafe conditions for our residents, and the Town is doing everything possible to ensure that we are ready to meet the challenge of severe winter weather,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

Residents are encouraged to sign-up for the Town’s E-Alerts, which can be used in emergencies to get crucial information sent directly to residents.

In addition, if plowing operations become necessary, residents are asked to remove their vehicles from the roadways to make space for our plows.

CHICKEN WING CONTEST - As part of a fundraising initiative, Brentwood’s AFJROTC held their first ever chicken wing eating contest at Buffalo Wild Wings (BWW), South Shore Mall. In partnership with the restaurant chain, BWW has reserved 15% of sales receipts from the event to the JROTC. The event was built as a social for upperclassman to welcome and interact incoming Sophomores. Each class period was represented by a male and female in the chicken wing eating contest. The winning class period will have their named inscribed on the traveling championship belt for next year’s class to compete.

My Buddy Buddy the Betta first entered my life on February 16th, 2015 as a “half-birthday” present to myself, with fingers crossed that this particular foray into the world of pet ownership would fare better than, say, the two carnival goldfish I had adopted the year prior.

Little did I know that this little guy – my beautiful, turquoise, delta-finned Buddy – would become exactly that… a friend, a companion, an adopted member of the family, over the next 21 months. Through nearly two years of my life, from holiday gatherings to cozy weekends spent at home, just the two of us, Buddy was a constant.

I’m not sure at what point I began to view him as so much more than a pet; but that he was. They say all animals have distinct personalities and characteristics, and Buddy was certainly no exception. Day after day, our routine became such that I swore he recognized me, greeted me, anxiously awaited my arrival home from work. Meal times were met with exuberant fin-waving and flitting to and fro, and the

occasional “betta kisses” on the tip of my finger should I venture too close to the water. Bath times resulted in sulking in the corner, burrowing behind his favorite plant and being downright obstinate when it came time to transfer from his larger, luxurious suite of a tank to his tiny “starter” bowl.

Those I told about Buddy initially reacted with skepticism that a mere fish could actually possess almost humanlike qualities. That was, until they met him. It was impossible not to be charmed by this tiny fish with the big fins and the even bigger personality. And boy did he love the attention!

It was about six months in that I worked Buddy into my “In Step” column as a “guest columnist,” taking on the role of my spokesfish and taking over the masthead with his “In Swim” moniker. The tremendous feedback I received from readers, the majority of whom were complete strangers, was overwhelming, with some even suggesting the makings of a future children’s book series.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Milestones came and went, from his widely celebrated 1st Betta Birthday, to Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, summer barbeques and everything in between, with Buddy often joining my company in his tiny bowl on the dining room table or setting up shop on the coffee table in front of the television. A better life could not a betta have.

Sadly, my little Buddy passed on to fishy heaven just last week.

He was a fighter up until the very end, and it was truly devastating to see him go. All pets are irreplaceable, to be sure; but my Buddy holds an extremely special place in my heart, and always will. Thank you to everyone who frequently wrote in to inquire about his wellbeing and for all the support of his guest columns.

In this way, he has become somewhat immortalized in print.

Life won’t be the same without ya Buddy.

East Islip will play the Nassau County winner (either Wantagh or Roosevelt) for the Division III Long Island Championship. This game

will take place on Friday, November 25th at 4:30 p.m. at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium. There will be a $7 admission charge to attend.
