T

he 6th grade Islip Football Buccaneers have won two County Championships and have finished their season 10-0 for the second straight year. This team was the little engine that could.

Each player gave 100% all the time during practices, scrimmages and, more importantly, when games were on the line. Both teams waited for approximately 30 minutes for the game to resume, and when it did, the Buccaneers were rejuvenated!

the life cycles of apple trees and pumpkin seeds as well as fall colors and weather.

While carving the gourds, the students practiced sequencing by learning new vocabulary, sequencing pictures and working as a team to make

Past Peak Well there it is. I hope you enjoyed autumn. Did you savor the glorious foliage on your drive to work? Did you pick enough apples and pumpkins to last you through your winter hibernation? Did you take in the requisite corn mazes and haunted houses and eat far too much Halloween candy in the process?

Like it or not, once those leaves begin to brown and flutter to the ground en masse, autumn is officially past its peak. Forecasters are already beginning

to utter that dreaded four-letter word as the temperatures drop each evening. Heck, even some retailers seem to have hit fast forward, starting their “Black Friday” sales the day after Halloween this year. Um… did we miss something?

As far as I’m concerned, “winter” is still a few weeks out. There’s still plenty of turkey and trimmings to be enjoyed, leaf piles to jump into and mum plants to admire. The shopping and decorating and wrapping and cooking can wait a bit.

There will be plenty of time for all that over the next

month or so. And then… well, then it’s just plain old winter.

Slow down.

Savor.

Repeat for next season.

It’s not that difficult.

Perhaps if everyone wasn’t in such a great rush, there would be more time to accomplish things.

Mindset is everything. In the meantime, enjoy the cool, crisp autumn air as you rake your leaves and plan the Thanksgiving menu for next week.

Sherwood Celebrates In recognition of Veterans Day, Islip’s Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School hosted a daylong, school-wide veterans celebration.

To kickoff the celebration, the students enjoyed David Jack’s Spirit of America cultural arts program. The PTA-sponsored program

featured a journey through the history of America’s music and introduced the students to songwriters of America’s most famous patriotic songs, including Yankee Doodle.

Throughout the rest of day, the staff focused lessons to truly teach the students what Veteran’s

Day is and honored veterans, including writing letters of thanks.

To prepare for the day, students used the library to research the different branches of military service, colored photos and presented what they learned to their classmates.

The East Islip Athletic Booster Club recently presented a check for $5,140 to the East Islip Youth Organization in support of the ongoing turf fields project at the high school’s football stadium.

The funds included $5,000 donated by the

Booster Club and $140 donated by one of its members, the McGoldrickBurke family.

“We recognizes the huge task that the East Islip Youth Organization is taking on in their efforts to raise funds to install turf fields here at Sal

Ciampi Field at Boomer Esiason Stadium, as well as a new track,” said EIABC President Bob Sendel. “The Booster Club supports them, and in presenting this check, we hope the community will come together and support this effort as well.”

KanJamming For Red Ribbons East Islip High School’s Student Against Destructive Decisions Club sponsored a KanJam tournament on October 15th to raise funds for the district’s Red Ribbon program.

Students and teachers enjoyed playing KanJam, a popular game using a Frisbee disc and two

scoring containers that serve as goals. Among the participants were East Islip teachers Daniel Faulkman, Mike Festa, Linda Leach, Carene Mahoney, Mike Petre and Derk Reinking.

Teams were charged $10 to play, competing for a $50 grand prize. The winners of the SADD Club KanJam Tournament were

“Everyone had fun and the students loved it,” said SADD Adviser Bridget Lopiccolo.

Finishing At The Top

The 6th grade Islip Football Buccaneers have won two County Championships and have finished their season 10-0 for the second straight year.

This team was the little engine that could. Each player gave 100% all the time during practices, scrimmages and, more importantly, when games were on the line.

This past Saturday, November 8th, at the Suffolk County PAL complex in Holbrook,

they played the only other undefeated team, the Wyandanch Warriors. The Islip Bucs were losing 19-14 at the beginning of the 4th quarter when the entire PAL stadium went dark - lights out!

Both teams waited for approximately 30 minutes for the game to resume, and when it did, the Buccaneers were rejuvenated!

They came back to win 26-19 in a nail bitter. The Wyandanch Warriors were amazing competitors

and showed true sportsmanship. After the handshake and during the postgame celebration, the Wyandanch coach spoke to the Islip Bucs, telling them that this was his hardest game ever played in 36 years of coaching. It was a true complement to the team!

The Islip Buccaneers have been coached for the past six years by Jason Vitale and his staff.

Congratulations to the boys for their determination and hard work!

TALENTED GIRLS - The East Islip girls of Gravity Cheer were recently invited to audition for America’s Got Talent on Sunday, November 9th, at Pier 92/94 in Manhattan! It was a great experience for everyone and something for them to be proud of - they were amazing, hitting all their stunts and doing what tumbling they could on a cement floor! Congratulations! Undefeated Season East Islip Middle School’s girls soccer team carried on its winning tradition this fall, adding another outstanding undefeated season to their accomplishments.

The young athletes’ skills improved dramatically throughout the season, powering them past all opponents.

“The girls played some tough games but the

players were always able to work together as a team in order to defeat their opponents,” said Barbara Huether, who has coached the team for the past 15 years.

Vets Recognized With a great sense of pride and admiration, students at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools once again honored outstanding veterans from the East Islip community at the two schools’ Veterans Day celebrations on November 7th.

At RCK, the halls were

filled with patriotic cheers as the school held its annual veterans parade, while at JFK, students honored their guest veterans with songs and poems at a PTA-sponsored breakfast.

“It was an honor to celebrate the many men and women who have served our country,” said

RCK Principal Danielle Naccarato. “Thanks to them, we are free.”

“It was a fitting tribute to our heroic veterans, these brave men and women who have protected our country and way of life and have distinguished themselves both in military and civilian life,” said JFK Principal Aileen O’Rourke.

CENTRAL ISLIP CIVIC LUNCHEON - Town of Islip Councilman Steve Flotteron recently celebrated with the members of the Central Islip Civic Council at their 48th Anniversary Luncheon at Timber Point Country Club. Among this year’s honorees was Philip K. Voigt, Central Islip School District’s Director of Music and Technology Education.

LOCAL LIONS DONATE - Islip Town Councilman John Cochrane, Jr., recently attended a luncheon at the Nutty Irishman in Bay Shore, where members of the Bay Shore Lions Club presented representatives from local food pantries a check for $30,000, to be used over the next three years, to assist pantries in continuing the mission of feeding those in need.

In recognition of Veterans Day, Islip’s Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School hosted a daylong, school-wide veterans celebration.

To kickoff the celebration, the students enjoyed David Jack’s Spirit of America cultural arts program. The PTA-sponsored program

featured a journey through the history of America’s music and introduced the students to songwriters of America’s most famous patriotic songs, including Yankee Doodle.

Throughout the rest of day, the staff focused lessons to truly teach the students what Veteran’s

Day is and honored veterans, including writing letters of thanks.

To prepare for the day, students used the library to research the different branches of military service, colored photos and presented what they learned to their classmates.

More than 600 East Islip High School students and family members attended the school’s annual October college fair in search of information on their future colleges and universities.

The fair also provided a crucial chance for students to network faceto-face with more than 100 college representatives in attendance, so that when they are ready to make their choice for postsecondary education, they will have already taken the

first step in introducing themselves.

“Parents and students were delighted to have this opportunity to meet so many college reps right in their own high school,” said Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer.

He credits the event’s growing success over the last dozen years to collaboration with a consortium of colleges.

“I am able to work with the consortium and bring more colleges each year to our students,”

Malinowitzer said. “We started 13 years ago with only 50 colleges attending this event, and now we have over 130 colleges and growing.”

East Islip’s college fair evening also included two useful seminars for parents and students – a college financial aid workshop presented by Gordon Rowe from St. Joseph’s College and an NCAA requirements workshop presented by guidance counselor Jessica Pignataro.

Their presentation, titled “Creating a T.V.

Studio On A Shoestring Budget” explained to a packed room how school districts could set up and maintain various forms of inside media.

Since presenting at the summit, they’ve had interest from several other districts on Long Island to visit Islip and learn more about the district’s weekly media productions.

According to the Nassau BOCES website, which co-sponsored the event along with the Western and Eastern Suffolk BOCES, this year’s agenda focused on “solutions to help you improve student achievement and inspire creativity and innovation in the digital age.”

One scholarship winner will also receive an additional $2,500 scholarship provided by the LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation which Suffolk Federal will match for a total of $5,000.

To be eligible, students must be high-school seniors attending two-

New Website Launches CAPS announced today the launch of its SUSS (Students United for Safe Schools) website http:// suss.capsli.org to promote and expand its bullying prevention team building program for middle and high school students.

This innovative program was designed and created through the CAPS Bullying Prevention Center and is the first of its kind in the region.

SUSS teams are

Teaching Tolerance. The goal of these campaigns is to create school communities where all students feel safe, valued, and respected. We have had SUSS teams appear on News 12 and receive a national Character Education Partnership Award.

Funding from the Long Island Community Foundation through its Youth Violence Prevention initiative has enabled CAPS

to develop the website, expand the SUSS program, and share and publicize the work that school teams are doing towards creating safe school climates.

“Now all Long Island students will be able to benefit from CAPS’ SUSS initiative, fostering positive school climates where all children can feel safe. All L.I. middle and high schools will have the opportunity to create a SUSS team and receive

guidance from CAPS,” said Alane Fagin, Executive Director. “New schools can now sign up online, receive training through the website and access invaluable information on creating safe school communities.”
