Adopt-A-Family Food Drive

On Saturday, November 19th, at 11 AM, scores of volunteers will drop off bags of food at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Office Building, located at 754 Montauk Highway in Islip. Each bag will go to a family and will contain non-perishable items for Thanksgiving and other holiday dinners.

“The Thanksgiving table may not look the same for everyone,” said Father Edwin Beckham, Priestin-Charge at St. Mark’s. “So, we’re also including items not only reflective of the traditional American holiday meal, but also of different cultures, such as flan mix; canned (pure) pumpkin; coconut milk, jerk seasoning, etc. The diversity of the world’s cultures is God’s gift to be celebrated.”

“This is a version of the LI Cares-Harry Chapin Food Bank Adopt-a-Family project,‘’ said Irene Ross, food drive organizer. “As always, all donations will go to God’s Provision, an affiliate of that organization.”

If possible, we’d like each bag to contain at least eight items. A typical bag might include (this is only an example-you’ll create your own): 1 can green beans; 1 can cream of mushroom soup; 1 box onion rings; stuffing mix; Jiffy cornbread; gravy; cranberry sauce; olives or nuts.

The following are some suggestions. We appreciate your recommendations for adding additional nonperishable items.

United Against Bullying

East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School celebrated Unity Day on Oct. 19 by wearing orange to show support for bullying prevention. Students also participated in signing pledges and had an opportunity to

create an orange paper leaf to add to the JFK Unity Tree, a powerful symbol reminding everyone that bullying can be prevented when everyone is united for kindness, acceptance and inclusion.

“Building the Unity

Tree was an interactive and hands-on activity,” Principal Deborah Smith said. “It created a visual reminder demonstrating that when we are united, we can create social change.”

Since Veterans Day occurs in November, our Charity of the Month is one of Suffolk County’s foremost advocates for the interests of our veterans, the Ronkonkoma-based Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW).

MHAW offers a wide range of support services to Suffolk County veterans by connecting them with affordable housing, medical and mental health assistance, case management, ﬁnancial and legal referrals, employment assistance programs, and food pantries to help combat food insecurity.

This article in particular focuses on one important component of MHAW’s veteran services, the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project. Named to honor the memory of an Iraq War hero and Army medic from Mt. Sinai who lost his battle with PTSD, the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project is a peer-to-peer initiative offered in collaboration with the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency.

The Dwyer Project serves veterans, service members, and their families with such post-service transitional issues as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury, although a formal diagnosis is not required for participation. They offer weekly peer groups both in person and virtual, and they also host monthly in-person community resource activities as well as a bi-monthly senior veteran group.

The Dwyer Project’s trained “Veteran Peer Mentors” have served in various branches of the Armed Forces and understand the reintegration needs of those who have been in the military, regardless of era or branch of service. This Project accepts all veterans, no matter their discharge status. All group sessions are conﬁdential and anonymous in a safe, and trusting environment, free of judgment.

“Peer specialists are critical allies for our veterans,” says Colleen Merlo, CEO of the Association for Mental Health and Wellness. “They understand what other veterans are going through and can offer

As described by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, peer support workers are “people who have been successful in the recovery process who help others experiencing similar situations. Through shared understanding, respect, and mutual empowerment, peer support workers help people become and stay engaged in the recovery process and reduce the likelihood of relapse.”

It is a true power to have this type of communication,” said one a local veteran that is involved with The Dwyer Project.

“My facilitators are fantastic in organizing programs and ideas for how to help each other. The group is fundamental to what we need. When you get veterans together and get them talking, they can work out their issues. This is one of the most important programs for veterans I have ever seen.”

The Dwyer Project’s free, conﬁdential, peer-to-peer approach has attracted support from both veterans and mental health professionals statewide. In fact, this year’s state budget includes funding for this Project in all 62 counties. Additionally, a national veteran peer initiative is pending in Congress, and it all started here in Suffolk County.

Islip Honors Board Of Education

The Islip School District celebrated School Board Recognition Week at the board of education’s Oct. 25 meeting, honoring the board members for their dedication to Islip’s students and school community.

Director of Fine and Performing Arts Michael Hershkowitz worked with the district’s art teachers to create letter templates for each Islip student to mark or sign in some way as a representation

of their gratitude to the board members for their service. Commack Road Elementary School, Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School and Wing Elementary School each “signed” one letter, while Islip High School and Islip Middle School both signed two. In total, the eight letters spelling out “thank you” contained the mark or signature of nearly every student and administrator in the district. After the signatures were gathered,

the letters were placed in frames and presented to the board trustees by students representing the building responsible for each.

“These students and their classmates are the reasons we volunteer,” board trustee Matthew Clareen said. “It was really exciting,” added board President Philip Dineen. “It really reinforces as a board collectively as a team, the common denominator is that we always want to see students succeed.”
