This morning, I was hoping to see the sunrise. Not because I have never had the privilege of experiencing one, but because I thought it would be a fitting way to mark what would have been my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, an occasion we, as a family, are forced to bittersweetly celebrate in his absence. Somehow, I thought the golden rays welcoming a brand new day might make the sadness simply melt away.

Unfortunately, when I awoke, it was not to the promising haze of dawn, but to an overcast sky brimming with rain clouds, seemingly ready to shower the land at any given moment.

I suppose that was fitting in its own way.

Realistically, the prospect

of “celebrating” any occasion following the passing of someone special is a fairly impossible task. Absent is the guest of honor, replaced by memories of days gone by and happier times. They say these things grow easier with time, but I’m not sure that is truly the case. Perhaps we just learn to adapt and deal with them differently... but the pain remains all the same.

First holidays, especially, seem to take the biggest emotional toll on those loved ones left behind, as they attempt to pick up the pieces and carry on as usual. The problem is, there is no “norm,” so to speak. Traditions seem empty, and those things that once brought us joy are tinged with melancholy.

Life goes on, of course, and happiness is found in

other outlets as new customs are established and flourish over time. The memories we treasure become the backbone, the foundation, of our existence, as we build upon them and incorporate new generations and settings.

It can be a painful process, to be sure, but those memories, and the prospect of making new ones, provide the motivation to forge ahead.

And so, on this, my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, I remember the loving man at the center of so many of my happiest memories. I find solace in knowing that he is always with me, in one form or another, along with all of my loved ones who have passed on through the years.

And I take comfort in the fact that so many special people have touched my life.

Bullet Aid Provided New York State Sen. Tom Croci recently provided $20,000 in unrestricted state education aid, known as Bullet Aid, for the East Islip School District, which was used to enroll seven students in East Islip’s prekindergarten program offered by the South

Shore Preschool for Early Childhood Education in Islip Terrace. The chosen students were selected from the district’s UPK lottery waiting list.

“The senator realizes the importance of getting students into a positive learning environment

at an early age,” said Superintendent John V. Dolan, who toured the preschool with Sen. Croci.

“We truly appreciate all his help in supporting and promoting education in East Islip and across the state.”

Arts Alive East Islip High School freshmen Alexa Fusco, Caroline Meehan and Alexis Barber finished first, second and third, respectively, in the Arts Alive LI 2016 Poster Contest, which they participated in while

students in East Islip Middle School teacher Frances Weller’s art classes last year.

The trio were recognized at an October 13th Board of Education meeting, where they received certificates and congratulations from

Rivalry Features Redmen Superintendent John V. Dolan. Their artwork is on display during the month of October at the Long Island Children’s Museum in Garden City as part of National Arts and Humanities Month.

East Islip High School’s vaunted varsity football team were featured on October 15th, as a home contest against rival Sayville was featured in a Great American Rivalry game, supported by the U.S. Marine Corps.

The 4-2 Redmen played hard in a 34-12 loss, but the undefeated Golden Flashes, in the midst of a 17-game winning streak, proved a tough opponent.

Sharpening Skills Business-minded Islip High School students sharpened their entrepreneurial and retail skills on the third weekend of October at the Islip Fire Department’s Main Street Autumn Festival. Student interns from the IBuc Shop, along with members of the school’s Junior Chamber of Commerce Club and Bucs

“These students volunteered their day to obtain real-world business ownership experience by setting up the booth and merchandise, making transactions with the customers, then breaking it all down to go back

to the school,” said business teacher Renee Clock, who admired the students’ dedication to promoting pride within the community. “I have an ambitious group of future entrepreneurs that seek opportunities like this to develop their skills. The students did a fantastic job today.”

PLAYOFF BOUND - The Bay Shore Girls Varsity Soccer team ended the regular season second place in League 2, which is a school record! Their season record was 8 wins, 4 losses, and 2 ties. The team clinched a playoff spot on September 30th against Riverhead. The Lady Marauders are currently waiting to see who they will face the first round of playoffs, which will be on Monday, October 24th. Congratulations to all of the members of their team for their hard work and dedication!

Legislator Tom Cilmi presented a check for $2,000 to the Rett Syndrome Center at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore.

On hand to accept the donation was Great River resident Anthony Dattero and his family. Anthony won a charity wing-eating contest sponsored by Legislator Cilmi. The proceeds of the contest go to the charity of the winner’s choice.

Mr. Dattero’s daughter Jayme (center) suffers from Rett Syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder in girls, which affects the way the brain develops, causing a progressive inability to use muscles for eye and body movement and speech.

Golf Classic a Success Bright sunshine matched the spirit and generosity of golf enthusiasts and sponsors, enabling the Friends of Mercy Medical Center to raise $125,000 at their 35th annual Golf Classic.

The September 15th event included a morning and afternoon shotgun, with 250 golfers coming together at the Garden City Country Club and Hempstead Golf and Country Club to support the Rockville Centre hospital. Due to the initial successful response, the

first course was completely reserved within just nine days, and so the second course was added.

The post-outing dinner honored William Armstrong, CPA, senior vice president of finance for Catholic Health Services, and the presenting sponsors were Sentosa Care LLC and Medtronic.

(NAPSI)—Many people may not realize that it only takes two minutes for a house to be engulfed in flames. The American Red Cross and its Home Fire Campaign partners are asking everyone across the country to take the following two simple steps to help decrease the risk of home fires and save lives: 1. Create and practice your 2-minute drill.

Have at least two ways to escape from every room.

Select an outside meeting spot at a safe distance where family members can meet. Discuss the plan with everyone in the household and practice it until everyone can escape in less than two minutes.

Conduct practice drills at least twice a year.

2. Install and maintain smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms halve your risk of dying in a home fire.

Put them on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms. Test the alarms monthly and change the batteries when needed.

Never disable a smoke alarm. Teach children what an alarm sounds like and what to do if they hear one.

Shining a Light

Members of the public and the Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC) walked the Sunken Meadow State Park boardwalk on Thursday, October 6th to raise awareness about the importance of physical activity in maintaining physical and mental health.

The walk coincided with Mental Health Awareness Week. With the regional

theme of being able to “Shine a Light” on mental health/substance abuse treatment and prevention, the LIHC called the event the Light the Path Walk.

There is compelling research that physical activity improves mood and it has been shown to decrease symptoms of depression and anxiety.

“We know that one

in every five individuals will experience a mental health issue during their lifetimes,” said Janine Logan, Director of the Long Island Health Collaborative. “The simple act of walking is one way to manage stress, while losing weight and getting in shape at the same time.”

The Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo celebrated its final days of the 2016 season with its second annual Pirates and Princesses Treasure Hunt on Monday, October 10th.

Hundreds of children of all ages donned their best ball gowns and swashbuckling attire to participate in an expedition around the zoo.

Prizes were awarded to all participants, who also had a chance to take pictures with a real-life pirate and princess.

guests can get up-close and personal with their favorite animals. New to the Game Farm this year was the Camel Encounter, where guests hand-fed the camels and learned fun facts from the staff.
