—John Riley, Grasshopper’s Comics, Williston Park John Riley loves comic books. For the last 30 years, he’s been sharing that love with readers young and old. And we’ve been with John every step of the way, helping plan improvements ranging from upgrading LED lighting to replacing a 50-year-old oil tank with a super-efficient heat pump. These upgrades save him money that he reinvests in—you guessed it—more comic books. As it should be.

As a strong believer in the importance of embracing culture through the arts, Oby was also an integral member of the nonprofit arts center, Teatro Yerbabruja, championing local artists, civic dialogue, and social revitalization. Oby was additionally a youth mentor; volunteer emergency medical technician; an earthquake relief volunteer in Peru; a Guardian Angel, and a cherished hometown hero, but chief among the many roles he served, Oby was a beloved friend and husband,

ISLIP TOWN RECOGNIZES HISPANIC HERITAGE - Throughout the year, the Town of Islip has the distinct honor of recognizing extraordinary members of the community who live their lives with determination and drive, leading by positive example to be a force for good. Sergeant, and in 2008, he deployed to Afghanistan to support Operation Enduring Freedom. Upon his retirement from active military service, Alfredo joined the ranks of the NYPD, dedicating over three years to the City of New York. He has continued his career in law enforcement, currently serving as a police officer in the Suffolk County Police Department’s Third Precinct. Within the SCPD, Alfredo serves as a community officer in the 3rd Precinct C.O.P.E Unit and assists in running the Police Explorer Post 389, organizing “Cooking with a Cop” to teach kids how to make simple meals at home, as well as providing

gang prevention and mentoring services to atrisk youth throughout our community. His devotion to keeping communities and the people whom call them home safe, is truly noteworthy. Miguel Turell was born and raised in Brentwood, graduating from Brentwood High School in 1999. For over 20 years, he has been dedicated to giving back to his community, serving as a Brentwood Youth Athletics Basketball coach; Youth Mentor with the Gentleman’s Society; and a Parent Connector with Brentwood’s My Brother’s Keeper Family Component. Miguel has also been a dedicated volunteer of Youth Enrichment Services,

where he has served as a Community Credible Messenger, working with youth returning home from placement upstate. In 2016, Miguel founded Uplift Brentwood, later named Uplift Our Towns, a non-profit dedicated to promoting positive community engagement and participation in Brentwood and Central Islip. Along with founding Uplift Our Towns, Miguel is the current leader of the Clean Streets Project, an annual event focused on cleaning up the neighborhoods of Brentwood, Central Islip and Bay Shore. Throughout his career he has demonstrated true care for the positive direction of today’s youth, and the continued beauty

of the Town of Islip. Carlos Cabrera of Sayville is first and foremost, a dedicated and compassionate community advocate and volunteer. He is the owner of the historic Sayville Inn, whose rich history boasts having once served President Teddy Roosevelt. As an active member of the Sayville Chamber of Commerce where he serves as the chairman of the Golf Committee, Carlos plays a crucial role in fostering a vibrant and inclusive community atmosphere, also hosting the annual “Sangria Salute” fundraiser to benefit the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Navy Seal Museum. Additionally, as

the Treasurer of the Neighborhood House of Long Island, a non-profit founded in 2013 to help combat the epidemic and tragic aftereffects caused by deaths of despair, Carlos has made it his mission to create a sanctuary where people can find the hope necessary to repair their lives. His genuine compassion for giving back showcases a true spirit of charity and generosity. “Congratulations to all the honorees of this year’s Hispanic Heritage awards, and a sincere thank you for all you have done and continue to do for our community,” said Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter.

Throughout the year, the Town of Islip has the distinct honor of recognizing extraordinary members of the community who live their lives with determination and drive, leading by positive example to be a force for good. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and members of the Town Board proudly recognized those members of the community of Hispanic Heritage, whose presence in the Town has improved the quality of life for their fellow neighbors and communities. The town was honored to have four such members of the community recognized at the September Town Board meeting. Born in Columbia, Diego Isaza came to the United States at just 11 years old, joining his mother and her dream of one day owning a bakery. That dream would come to fruition, and the now thriving Sabor Latino Bakery has been serving the Brentwood community for many years. Diego’s commitment to the Bakery and his employees was recently demonstrated during the Pandemic. Sabor Latino Bakery never closed its doors, both providing comfort to the community, while offering a secure place of work for his employees during uncertain times. In addition, Diego happily and regularly donates surplus baked goods to the local community. Alfredo Alvarado has dedicated himself to a life predicated on the notions to “protect and serve.” Born in El Salvador, Alfredo immigrated to the United States at 7 years old, and graduated from Central Islip High School in 2007. After high school, Alfredo joined the United States Army, serving as an infantryman and rising to the rank of Staff

Half A Century Of Service Honored

The Town of Islip is fortunate to have many dedicated and civic minded individuals who devote their time to improve, serve, and safekeep the Town. The Town recently paid tribute to the volunteer firefighters who have devoted an extraordinary 50+ years of service. Many

of these men have served in their departments as Commissioners, Chiefs, Captains, and all of them have been an inspiration to the younger members who share in their wisdom. “They have witnessed the growth of our community over the course of half a century, have adapted to

changing circumstances and growing needs, and have not failed to rise to meet the unique challenges of their departments in order to best serve in their communities. Please join me in recognizing their profound dedication and excellence,” said Islip Supervisor, Angie Carpenter. From Bayport:

The food bank received rebates of $29,313 for installing a workplace electric vehicle charger with two ports, which will help it save money so it can support more families in need. The charger will power the organization’s growing EV fleet of vans and trucks, and allow employees and visitors to charge their EVs for free. “PSEG Long Island applauds Long Island Cares for installing an EV charging station and purchasing EVs to replace some of its gas-powered vehicles,” said Michael Voltz, director of Energy Efficiency and Renewables, PSEG Long Island. “These measures will help support

the environment and also save the organization money. Hopefully it can also serve as a model for other organizations. We’re happy to support this wonderful philanthropic organization in more ways that help them provide food for our neighbors in need.” “We’re extremely grateful to PSEG Long Island for its continued support of our work at the regional food bank,” said Paule Pachter, president and CEO of Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank. “They have been important partners in our efforts to address food insecurity on Long Island by sponsoring several farmers market programs, generously donating energy efficient light bulbs to share with the many families and individuals that we assist, and by making it possible for us to install EV charging stations at our headquarters in Hauppauge. TO PLACE YOUR AD IN THE CLASSIFIEDS CALL 631-226-2636 October Fundraising Event Helps Pay For Funerals Of Loved Ones Who Died From Drug Overdose & Provides Grief And Loss Services For Families After her grandson Gabriel died of an overdose in 2010, Grandmother Paulette Phillippe remembers how her family had the additional struggle to pay for funeral expenses. That’s why in 2020, to mark Gabriel’s 10th anniversary in heaven, she formed Gabriel’s Giving Tree (GGT) to help families in need on Long Island pay for funeral and burial services after a loved one dies from an opioid poisoning or substance use disorder. In 2021, GGT joined forces with the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), together they have raised more than $100,000, assisting nearly 30 families to provide their loved ones one final gift. Says Phillippe, “I know from experience that many families may not have these funds, especially

after using much of their resources to help their loved one with treatment costs, in hopes of helping them become healthy and free from addiction. The grants provided by GGT only cover a portion of the expenses. Fortunately, several Long Island funeral homes, including Fives Funeral Homes in Smithtown and Patchogue work with the organization to help families struggling to pay for funeral costs stay within a budget.” On October 29, 2023, GGT and LICADD will be hosting its annual fundraiser, “The Peter Sweisgood and Gabriel’s Giving Tree Healing and Recovery Breakfast” in memory of former LICADD Executive Director, Peter Sweisgood. The breakfast will honor Richard Buckman, Founder of the Long Island Recovery Association and Ed Olsen

(posthumously) for their contributions to the field of recovery. The Breakfast is an opportunity for families to share their experience in grief and healing during a casual, come as you are event. To be as inclusive as possible, tickets are priced at $55. The Breakfast will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Heritage Club at Bethpage. For tickets and information about sponsorship opportunities, contact Nadege Jeanty at LICADD at 516-747-2606 or visit: https://licadd.org In addition to assisting with funeral costs, Gabriel’s Giving Tree has created a Tree Memorial and Serenity Garden at the Suffolk County Environmental Center at the Scully Estate, located at 550 South Bay Avenue in Islip. Called “Gabriel’s Giving Tree Memorial & Recovery Park,” the serene space gives visitors

the opportunity to heal and reflect. Together with LICADD they connect families to grief and loss services. For more information on a

scholarship after losing a loved one: gabriel. givingtree@gmail.com . All donations to LICADD, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, are tax

deductible as allowable by law. Donations may be directed to the Gabriel’s Giving Tree Program in support of scholarships for funeral services.

LAST YEAR’S FUNDRAISER FOR GABRIEL’S GIVING TREE - Last year’s fundraiser for Gabriel’s Giving Tree enabled the nonprofit to help many families with funeral expenses. Here, attendees stand in front of the Angel Tree, which has ornaments with the faces and names of those lost to the opioid epidemic. Photo courtesy of Gabriel’s Giving Tree
