Conversations with Masters This week I’m turning my column over to some of the Masters I have been priviledged enough to interview. Below are a few eye-opening quotes gleaned from my past interviews. I cherish these conversations, and hope you find the below insights as valuable as I did: Dr. Deepak Chopra on the illusion of time “If you are in love, time does not exist. If you are having a good time, it flies. If you are on a deadline, you feel that you are running out of time. If you are bored or anxious, time takes forever. Time is how we measure our experience. In addition, Mrs. Edwards serves as the Long Island regional director of the NAACP and has previously served as vice president of the Elwood Board of Education and chairwoman of the Town of Huntington’s Planning Board.

Kyle Richards’ Hollywood Upbringing and Booming TV Career

Real Housewife of Beverly Hills, Paris Hilton and Nicky Hilton Rothschild’s aunt; Kyle Richards has emerged as a Hollywood force.

She is the breakout star of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, now in its ninth season, and Executive Producer of the new hit television series, American Woman, loosely based on the colorful life of her late mother, Kathleen Richards.

Allison Kugel: Your new television show, American Woman, is inspired by your mom’s life. What is the greatest lesson your mom taught you?

Kyle Richards: She would always tell me, “If you want something, put it out there and you’ll make it happen.”

She would tell me that you have to plant the seeds. When you’re a kid you don’t really understand what that means. Now I realize that everything I was doing my whole life was planting the seeds for what I’m doing now.

She told me I could do anything I wanted to if I set my mind to it, and to never take my eye off the ball.

Allison Kugel: If she were still here, what do you think she would say about your new show, American Woman, and how she’s portrayed?

Kyle Richards: I think she would be very excited and proud, because she knew this was something I wanted to do, and I made it happen. She would be so proud to see her daughter doing well and fulfilling her dreams.

Allison Kugel: If you could go back in time, would you choose to be a child actor again?

Kyle Richards: Absolutely. I had a

very positive experience as a child actor. I worked with incredible people.

A lot of the things I did were in a very family-friendly environment. I got to travel and do exciting things I never would have been able to do if I were a regular child (laughs) living a normal life. I grew up in Bel Air, but obviously my friends weren’t actors. They went to school every day, they went to camp, and did all of those normal things. I didn’t get to do those things, but I was doing other interesting things and traveling. When we filmed Little House on the Prairie, we were filming out in Simi Valley and riding horses and playing in the streams and catching ducks. It was just like going to camp sometimes.

Allison Kugel: You had an unconventional upbringing, as is reflected on this show. What kind of impact did your childhood experience have on what you looked for in a husband and family as an adult?

Kyle Richards: I grew up in a house filled with women. My mom, my grandmother, my sisters, my mom’s friends… and my sister Kathy had these two best friends that basically lived at our house. It was like a big sorority house. There was a lot of fun in our house, but then I would go to my friends’ houses and I would see the dad coming home from work and the mom making dinner in the kitchen. I thought, “Oh, those are like the people on TV. Those are fake people.” But I always really admired that, and it was something that I always wanted to have.

Allison Kugel: Did you have input into the casting of Alicia Silverstone, who plays the character inspired by your mom?

Kyle Richards: Absolutely. I was involved with every aspect of the show. When I originally met with Alicia, my thought was that the actress we cast had to be a natural redhead. My mom was a redhead and it was a big part of her personality.

Alicia loved the script and I thought, “Okay, we’ll have a meeting,” because I love Alicia Silverstone! Who doesn’t love Alicia Silverstone? The second I met her, and I saw how inspired she was to dive into this role, or as Alicia describes it, “this juicy part,” I really felt she was the person to take on the challenge of portraying my mom.

Allison Kugel: What was your motivation for signing onto The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills in 2010? What did you hope would come from it?

Kyle Richards: [American Woman] was not the goal (laughs). I didn’t realize what the Housewives [franchise] really was when I started doing it. I didn’t understand the opportunities that would come my way. I was acting my whole life, and then I had pretty much stepped aside from that to raise my children. When The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills came up, I looked at it as just another gig. I didn’t know what it was like to do a reality television show, other than seeing my niece Paris [Hilton] do it. I thought, “This is great because it’s reality and my kids can be with me.” I had no game plan at all.

Kyle Richards: In American Woman, they show her working at The May Company, and with that part the writers took creative license.

My mom was our manager growing up, because we were all acting in television. She was a single mom raising us. All of a sudden, she found herself in this big house with no husband. Even though we had this nice house in Bel Air, my mom was very strict. We had to make our own beds. When we got cars we were not allowed to go to the car wash, we each had to wash our own car. My kids now go and get their nails done.

I wasn’t allowed to get my nails done.

I did my own nails.

Allison Kugel: You’d been working in television since childhood, so it made sense to go back to what you knew.

Allison Kugel: I think that part is a generational thing, because I didn’t get my first manicure and pedicure until I was in college.

Kyle Richards: I’ve been doing television since before I could even read. American Woman happened through a fan. My friend came to me and said, “I have these fans of yours who would love to meet you.

Would you mind doing lunch?” I agreed because he’s a very close friend of mine. They happened to be the producers of Shameless (on Showtime). At lunch they started asking me what my plans were for after Housewives. I told them I like to write, particularly about having an unconventional upbringing, and I began sharing some stories with them. Then I got a phone call that John Wells (American Woman’s Executive Producer) wanted to make my mom’s story into a television show.

Kyle Richards: Me either. A massage?

Are you kidding me? I never had a massage until I was married.

Allison Kugel: What parts of Alicia Silverstone’s portrayal of your mom

Allison Kugel: Do you find it a challenge to keep your kids grounded in Beverly Hills?

Kyle Richards: It is a challenge, and the way I deal with that is through having open conversations. I don’t want to be a broken record with my kids because then they’ll stop listening, but I kind of am sometimes.

My husband and I always talk about this. When we were first married we were in a very different position.

My oldest would say, “When are we going to get a house?,” because we were in a condo. I would explain that we have to make money and save up, and we have to have an extra cushion in the bank. So she would say, “How many cushions do we need?”

Allison Kugel: American Woman takes place in the 1970s, just as the seeds of feminism were starting to take root. It seems that your mom was ahead of her time, in terms of being a feminist more than forty years ago.

Kyle Richards: It’s funny you should say that, because my mom did not like the word “feminist.” It had such a negative connotation at the time.

Back then, women weren’t supposed to be strong and outspoken.

Nowadays it’s somewhat celebrated as empowering for women to be strong. I hope younger women, including my daughters, will see how far we have come and appreciate who they are and the power they have.

In my mother’s generation, that was lost. More importantly, it’s okay to be strong, but it’s also okay to be vulnerable.

Historical Society of Islip Hamlet On Monday, November 19th, the Historical Society of Islip Hamlet will host Jeff Richman, Green-Wood Cemetery’s historian and tour guide, who will give a presentation on his book, The Gallant Sims: A Civil War Hero Rediscovered.

As the Civil War began in 1861, Samuel Harris Sims, of Brooklyn, enlisted to fight to preserve the Union. For the next three years, he led his men into TEAMWORK SPEECH - Bay Shore Board of Education President Guy Leggio spoke many of the major battles to the Varsity Football team at its team dinner. He shared lessons about teamwork and of the war. Captain Sims was killed at the Battle of hard work that he learned as a Bay Shore athlete and as a coach. the Crater; he was interred

at Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery. His story was far from over. The soldiers who had served with him took up a collection to pay for his orphaned daughter’s college education; the Confederate who had captured Captain Sims’s sword returned it to his family.

In 1888, his comrades unveiled a monument in his memory. Two families lovingly preserved many of the objects and documents that now are owned by The Green-Wood Historic Fund, and make it possible

for this book to tell his dramatic story. They tell a fascinating story of love, patriotism, art, war, camaraderie, and more.

Two Islip Town Councilwomen placed in the Northwell Health Great South Bay Run recently. Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen took Third Place overall in the 13.1 Half Marathon and Councilwoman Trish Bergin took Sixth Place in her age category.

The 34th Annual Northwell Health Great South Bay Run features three USA Track and Field certified run courses; 13.1

Half Marathon, a 10K Run and a 5K Family Fun Run. Each race begins and ends at the Bay Shore Marina Park with a course that continues through historic Bay Shore downtown, along Brightwaters Lakes, Cascades and Canals.

The race finishes with an unobstructed view of Fire Island and the Great South Bay. A portion of the proceeds and 100 percent of all donations for this event

go to Southside Hospital’s Community Outreach and Health and Education Council (COHEC). The COHEC group’s mission is to strengthen partnerships to promote access to the highest quality health care, health literacy and wellness, improving the quality of life in all the communities Southside Hospital serves.

Bay Shore Pre-Schoolers Learned to How to “Be Ready” how to be prepared in case of an emergency. This interactive curriculum on emergency preparedness, filled with engaging videos, activities and take home packets, has reached more than 20,000 students across Long Island since its inception.

With hurricane season underway, the workshop was especially timely, as BeReady educators recently visited the Bay Shore YMCA, helping 120 preschool students be prepared in the event of an emergency.

At the end of assembly, the students recited a safety slogan that implements an acronym to help remind

the kids what they should do in an emergency: “Be Prepared, Be Safe, in an Emergency, and Get ready.” Children left with goodie bags to bring home, containing a coloring booklet, a certificate of “Emergency Readiness.” a safety hard hat, and pages containing information from 2-1-1 Long Island and PSEG Long Island on how parents can prepare for emergencies with their kids.

Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and Town Councilman James P. O’Connor recently joined with Nancy Cochran, KIC Executive Director, and the KIC Executive Board at an induction ceremony welcoming new junior commissioners to Keep Islip Clean. The inductees, all students from local high schools, were sworn in under oath

by Supervisor Carpenter, and presented Town Certificates of Recognition from both the Supervisor and the Councilman. More than forty students in total were inducted into the program, representing Bay Sore, Bayport ­– Bluepoint, Brentwood, Central Islip, Connetquot, East Islip, Hauppauge, Islip, Sayville, and West Islip high schools.

“For years our Town has

been a leading voice and proponent in recycling and green initiatives whose success rely, in no small part, on the dedicated volunteers of Keep Islip Clean. These young leaders will help power those initiatives, and be a driving force for change in the years to come,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

Two basic options exist for homeowners: portable generators and home standby generator systems.

Both solutions can keep the house lights on, appliances working and, in the event of a weather-related power outage or other emergency, will keep the home the safest place to ride out the storm. Huntington Youth Bureau Suffolk County Legislators Susan A. Berland (D-Dix Hills), Tom Donnelly (D-South Huntington) and William R. Spencer (D-Centerport) presented a proclamation to the Huntington Youth Bureau in recognition of their 50th Anniversary.

The Huntington Youth Bureau’s primary goals are the creation, promotion and implementation of programs and services, which stress youth development and meet the expressed and demonstrated needs of youth and their families in the Town of Huntington.

“I want to congratulate

the Huntington Youth Bureau for 50 years of service to the Town of Huntington,” said Legislator Berland. “As the ‘MC’ for the Huntington Youth Writes competition for 16 years, I saw firsthand the benefits that the program has had on Huntington’s youth, and this is only one of many excellent programs provided by the Huntington Youth Bureau.”

“I want to commend the Huntington Youth Bureau for its 50 years of service to the residents of Huntington,” Legislator Tom Donnelly said. “The bureau has taken on and

mastered a wide range of tasks, from drug and alcohol education, to youth development, GED and college preparation, Youth Court and more, benefiting those most in need of assistance.”

“Congratulations to the Huntington’s Youth Bureau for 50 years of devotion to the needs of our young people. Their wide range of programs and services have helped develop and improve countless lives and has brought tremendous value to the community,” stated Legislator William R. Spencer.

Suffolk Land Acquisition On Tuesday, October 2nd, the Suffolk County Legislature voted to approve Procedural Motion 13, which authorizes the County Division of Real Property to make an offer to purchase four parcels of land off of Whiskey Road in Middle Island owned by Stone Point Group, LLC, for open space acquisition.

Legislator Anker moved forward the acquisition process in an effort to preserve this environmentally sensitive property. The preservation efforts are supported by local community members, environmental groups, and the Middle Island Civic Association. The parcels will be purchased in partnership with the Town of Brookhaven with

the County contributing 70% of the purchase price and the Town contributing 30%.

“I am proud to be part of the Suffolk County Legislature which has taken a strong lead in acquiring and protecting environmentally sensitive properties to protect our natural ecosystems and our vulnerable groundwater aquifer,” stated Legislator Sarah Anker.

The County will now send an offer letter to the owners of the property, who will have 60 days to respond.

If the owner accepts the offer, the County will go into contract and prepare an Environmental Site Assessment to determine if site remediation must occur before the County

can close on the sale. The purchase will undergo a review by the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) and an acquisition resolution must then be approved by the Legislature before the County can close on the sale of the property.
