Since COVID-19 is so easily spread, health officials have long touted the need for social distancing. And while masks in public have long since become the norm, Halloween masks may not be sufficient.

The coronavirus already has scared off some Halloween attractions.

Universal Orlando, Disney World and Disneyland have canceled mainstream Halloween events for this year. Plus, a recent Harris poll on Halloween found that, of the 1,970 adults polled, nearly three out of four people have no plans to take their children trick-ortreating.

So what is the public to do in the wake of the risks of going out for Halloween?

• Maintain social

distancing if trick-ortreating is allowed. This could mean staggering times to go on the search for candy and avoiding homes where trick-or-treaters have already lined up.

• Consider small gatherings that enable youngsters to exchange candy with a limited group of friends or neighbors.

• Head to the mall or nearby stores in costume and get candy from retailers where it may be easier to maintain distance.

• Wear your mask or special face coverings when trick-or-treating. Consider building a costume around the masks so it fits with the Halloween theme.

• Wash hands frequently or use hand sanitizer when water and soap is unavailable.

Limit the number of houses you visit to reduce your risk of infection.

• Ask family or friends to send digital treats, such as gift cards or certificates.

Many restaurants may offer voucher programs for coupons for free ice creams at their locations, and while these may not be traditional Halloween goodies, ice cream is still sure to please youngsters.

• Consider car parades instead of traditional trickor-treating.

Halloween is a unique day each year when people gather together for parties, parades and of course, trick-ortreating. October 31 is a day that most children eagerly await each year because it means an opportunity to don a costume and come home with bags full of sweet treats.

This year Halloween figures to look different than it has in years past.

According to Moongiant.com, a full moon on Halloween happens an average of just once every 18 or 19 years. That means Halloween celebrants will likely only witness a full moon on Halloween five times every century.

In fact, the last time trick-or-treaters went on the prowl for Halloween candy beneath a full moon was October 31, 2001, but as Moongiant notes the next time a full moon is slated to appear is this October 31, 2020.

How To Prepare And Cook Pumpkin Seeds Nutrition and Halloween do not necessarily go hand in hand. While many parents may go to great lengths to ensure their youngsters’ Halloween treats offer at least a little nutritional value, the bulk of costumed kids’ hauls still tends to be candy.

Pumpkin seeds are one delicious yet often overlooked Halloween treat.

According to Healthline, an online medical resource that aims to educate readers as they pursue their health and overall wellbeing, pumpkin seeds provide a host of health benefits. In addition, pumpkin seeds are loaded with vitamin K, which plays a role in blood clotting and bone metabolisms and

helps to regulate blood calcium levels.

Pumpkin seeds tend to be easily accessible come Halloween, as they’re right inside the pumpkins many who celebrate this ghoulish holiday turn into jacko’-lanterns.

Whole Foods notes researchers found that roasting pumpkin seeds for more than 20 minutes can lead to unwanted changes in the fat structure of the seeds. To avoid such changes, make sure the seeds are not roasted for more than 20 minutes.

Once they have been roasted, pumpkin seeds can be served as-is as a delicious snack. Whole Foods notes that seeds also can be sprinkled into mixed green salads.

Pumpkin seeds can even be ground with fresh garlic, parsley and cilantro leaves and then mixed with olive oil and lemon juice to create a delicious salad dressing.

Chopped pumpkin seeds also can be added to cereals.

This Halloween, don’t forget to add a little nutrition to celebrations by roasting some pumpkin seeds.

Legislator Sam Gonzalez recently congratulated local Suffolk County Police Athletic League (SCPD PAL) members and awarded them with certificates for their incredible work in the program. The SCPD PAL has helped change the lives of local youth and strengthened community bonds -- leaving a lasting and profound impact on our communities.

The PAL has been a recipient of the National Association of Counties Award for innovative programs and has been recently assisting Legislator Gonzalez in distributing food and other items to local senior citizens.

working alongside Legislator Gonzalez to feed senior citizens,” Officer Groce said.

“In addition to making a difference, the teens had the opportunity to learn about Legislator Gonzalez’s duties in government and were even rewarded for their hard work with a certificate.”

“I am proud to congratulate the SCPD PAL members for all of their hard work and a job well done,” said Legislator Gonzalez.

“I am confident that these young men and women will continue to make our community very proud, both inside and outside of the classroom.”

Back to School in Brentwood With excitement and anticipation, the Brentwood Union Free School District (BUFSD) recently welcomed its students back for its official first day of school on Wednesday, September 16. As part of the district’s reopening plans, kindergarten students participate in 5-day per week in-person instruction while grades 1-12 are divided into two groups, Green and Gold, and follow a hybrid schedule.

On days that students are home, they participate in a balance of synchronous and asynchronous learning to ensure continuity while not in-person.

“There has been no better feeling than witnessing our students and staff reunite after all the hardships our community has faced over the last several

months,” said Mr. Richard Loeschner, superintendent of Brentwood Union Free School District.

“It’s remarkable to witness the innovation and creativity between our teachers and support staff who work hand-in-hand with district families to ensure our students remain engaged, learning and safe. Whether it’s virtually, or in-person, Brentwood faculty always have our students’ best interest at heart, and I am forever humbled to work with such a distinguished team of individuals. This year will be unique, but I have confidence that we will persevere because in Brentwood we are building a better world one student at a time.”

Eager to see new and familiar faces for the year ahead, building faculty, principals and central

administration greeted students as they arrived at school throughout the week. In adherence to the district’s new protocols, district employees utilized non-contact infrared forehead thermometers to check students’ temperatures prior to entering the building. Each building has implemented additional entry and exit points for arrival and dismissal to assist in avoiding congestion.

When students are cleared to enter their respective buildings, they are guided to their classrooms by signage, in English and Spanish, that identify traffic flow direction as well as social distancing precautions, like wearing a mask and remaining six feet from others.

Halloween Tradition According to Smithsonian.com, the Halloween tradition of trick-or-treating traces its origins to the Celtic tradition of dressing up as evil spirits at the end of the year, but unlike the trick-or-treaters of today, the Celts did not dress up for fun or in search of candy. According to Celtic belief, the dead and the living would overlap

during the transition from one year to the next. Celts also believed that demons would roam the earth during this transition period. So Celts dressed up as evil spirts so the demons they believed were walking the earth would mistake them as one of their own.

It was not just the Celts who contributed to what Halloween has become today. Historians believe

that trick-or-treating may also be rooted in the medieval practice of “souling,” in which poor children would go from door-to-door on All Souls’ Day and ask for food in exchange for prayers for the dead, both Celtic traditions and the practice of souling no doubt contributed to modern Halloween traditions.
