East Islip High School added a new wrinkle to its annual pep rally this year, interspersing amusing party games like musical chairs and eggand-spoon races to the traditional celebration of athletics and student pride. All of the school’s sports teams were introduced during the Sept. 27 event, which also featured exciting performances by the gymnastics and cheerleading teams, and rousing music from the high school pep band, directed by Christopher Neske.

Thomas, Team Mission United Runner When Thomas DeKenipp, of Bay Shore, enlisted in the U.S. Army he took to running and discovered he had a strong lung capacity. Within months, he became the leader of his troop’s group runs, setting the pace and keeping his fellow soldiers motivated.

Thomas served in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Combat Aviation Brigade as a helicopter crew chief and an in-flight mechanic for six years. Upon active duty retirement, he continued to serve as a civilian employee on the Army base in Afghanistan. When he returned to the States, this veteran struggled to make his military skills useful in the traditional workplace. Despite these obstacles, Thomas was self-driven and found a new career path as a mechanical engineer for Long Island-based CPI Aero where he works on a variety of military aircraft programs. Today

The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Every bit of money raised through their annual e v e n t (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity.

They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares.

This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The event will run on October 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event.

You can become involved with the Cemetery of Lost Souls in many ways. They are actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing (to help with social media marketing), Scare Team Members (actors to help put on the event), Security (watching over the event and making sure all guests are safe), and Bake Team Members (to donate baked

goods to sell at some of the events).

Volunteers must be 16 years of age and volunteer time can count towards community service hours!

Town Councilman, John C. Cochrane, Jr. recently joined in recognizing the many heroes in our community, at both the annual Bay Shore Fire Department “Thank You” BBQ, as well as the East Islip Fair. Meeting with Community Ambulance member Gene DeMott, and Robert Huse of the Bay Shore Fire Department, Councilman Cochrane gave his appreciation for all the emergency service men and women who continue to keep our residents safe year round.

The Councilman, a retired USN Captain, also shared support for the community at the East Islip Fair, meeting with American Legion 4S Post Commander, veteran Frank Frumento.

Northwell Health, in collaboration with Babylon and Islip towns, kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness Month and their inaugural “Pink by the Bay” program by lighting the town hall cupolas pink.

“Pink by the Bay” encourages communitybased organizations and businesses on Main Street from East Islip to Babylon to light and decorate their storefronts pink, as well as offer patrons educational literature about breast cancer prevention and detection. The program is a month-long effort that will promote breast cancer awareness while benefitting community breast cancer coalitions organized by Northwell Health’s Imbert Cancer Center and Southside Hospital – both in Bay Shore – and Northwell Imaging at Great South Bay in Islip.

Participating businesses and community-based organizations received a starter kit, which included breast cancer literature,

pink lights, window decorations and clings as well as chalk to help them decorate storefronts.

Breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women.

“It is the Town of Babylon’s privilege to partner with Northwell Health and the Town of Islip to raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer with the ‘Pink by the Bay’ campaign. Please honor those we have already lost from this disease by getting checked annually,” said Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer.

“We’re proud to partner with the Town of Babylon and Northwell Health for ‘Pink by the Bay.’ This community-wide effort is a reminder to women and men alike to schedule their mammography.

Early detection is the best prevention,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

region, noted, “We hope that this visual pink reminder will cause more people to think about whether they or their loved ones should be screened for breast cancer. When caught early, breast cancer patients can anticipate good treatment outcomes.”

During the Town of Islip event, Southside Hospital Executive Director Donna Moravick, NP, said, “When my mother had breast cancer, she received her care at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset.

Through Northwell Health’s vision and dedication to the residents of Suffolk County, women and men with breast cancer can now get their treatments close to home.”

Volunteers Renovate Facility For Abused Children

The United Construction Industry of America (UCIAM), pulled together contractors and affiliated members with the help of BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse) to renovate the Children’s Facility at VIBS Family violence and Rape Crisis Center in Islandia this past weekend, where children who are victims of sexual abuse and who are witnesses to domestic violence receive counseling and support.

One in ten boys and girls will be victims of sexual abuse before they turn 18.

Often, these children suffer depression, confusion, have trouble in school and problems socializing.

VIBS’ dedicated counselors and art therapists are there to ensure that their healing moves forward in a compassionate and supportive way.

The refurbishment was spearheaded by the United Construction Industry of America (UCIAM), a Long Island-based industry coalition that brings together the 22,000 construction contractors in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

“The renovation of our children’s facility

will go a long way in making sure that VIBS can continue to provide compassionate support for the many child victims of abuse and neglect that we help each year.” said Reina Schiffrin, executive director at VIBS. “We are so grateful to UCIAM and all the volunteers for their generosity and commitment to helping the children who receive services at VIBS”.

The volunteers were excited to be a part of the renovation and to be able to donate all labor and materials so there was no cost to the rape crisis center.

“I can’t think of a better organization to support.” said Greg Sforza of Done Right Remodeling of Hauppauge, one of the construction firms affiliated with UCIAM. “Kids are our foundation and we want to try to help them as much as we can. It didn’t take much effort to get people in the industry to pledge their time and labor to put this together.”

The renovation took place Saturday and Sunday September 21st and 22nd at VIBS’ offices in Islandia.

tion Bureau of Suffolk (VIBS) Established in 1976, VIBS Family Violence and Rape Crisis Center provides free and confidential services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence, child abuse, elder abuse and human trafficking, as well as education on these issues.

The first rape crisis center established on Long Island, VIBS provides specialized trauma informed counseling, advocacy, 24/7 confidential hotline, community education and legal representation to over thousands of individuals in Suffolk County and beyond each year. Free Breast Cancer Education Event To recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Northwell Health Cancer Institute and Katz Institute for Women’s Health will hold a free education event about prevention, screening and treatment from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 24 at the Imbert Cancer Center, 440 East Main Street, Bay Shore.

About one in eight women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime.

Breast cancer is a disease all women should monitor their risk for.

Paws Of War On September 7, 2019, Suffolk County Legislator Sam Gonzalez partnered with Paws of War to host a free mobile veterinary clinic.

This innovative program brings veterinary care free of charge to veterans who may otherwise not be able to provide the necessary care for their animals.

Paws of War is a nonprofit organization that trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional effects of war. The Vets2Vets program was created when Paws of War saw that the pets of veterans and first responders living with disabilities were in serious need of veterinary care. This exclusive mobile unit provides basic veterinary care such as a wellness check, grooming, dental cleaning, flea & tick protection, micro-chipping, and vaccinations. During the clinic the veterinarians treated 25 animals helping 18 veterans and distributed an assortment of pet supplies to veterans in need.

“It is an honor to be able to give back to those who have sacrificed for this country,” said Legislator Gonzalez.

I want to thank Paws of War for everything they do to support our veterans, they are truly an asset to our County.”

Fabulous 40 Named AP Scholars

Recognizing their hard work and academic diligence, a total of 40 current East Islip High School students were named AP Scholars for 2019 by the College Board.

The Advanced Placement Program recognizes several different award levels for college-level student academic achievement on AP courses and exams.
