Fishy Friends By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I recently adopted two pet goldfish. And by adopted, I mean spent $5 on 30 chances to win one at a carnival, and spent 17¢ on the other at a local pet store.

Add to that the expense of a fishbowl, pretty neon-colored gravel, a fun plant for the two of them to dart behind whenever I’m within a 5 mile radius, the all-important goldfish food which they don’t appear to even notice floating overhead, and a scrubbing brush and net for the weekly cleaning process and maintenance.

All that, with the hope that these two finned friends

will make it through the week, maybe even a month or two. My record so far is one whole year, upon which milestone my beta fish promptly croaked. I suppose the birthday celebration was too much for him. So far, as of this writing, five days and going strong. Not bad.

Of course, I realize goldfish aren’t the most sociable of pets to have, but these two – whom I named Harvey and Harry – are beyond standoffish. I turn the light on, they swim away; I sprinkle a few food flakes in their bowl, they’re nowhere to be found. I walk away, turn the light out and – viola – there they are, faces pressed against the glass.

I have visions of the conversation that must go on between them when I’m not in the room: When is the human coming back? Why does she bother us? Did you eat today?

I wish we had more trees to hide behind. Yes, I know – it’s silly. But they are home alone together all day; there must be some form of socialization between them, no?

At any rate, I can feel satisfied that I rescued two goldfish, one from the madness of the carnival setting, the other from the schools of fellow fish in the aquarium.

Even if they do prefer to cram themselves into a corner by themselves.

The free opportunities included a health assessment, body fat analysis, blood pressure checks, hearing screenings, and a fiveminute hand or foot massage. Attendees also enjoyed no-charge valet parking.

Cynthia Shaw of Helpful Care said, “This was our first year of exhibiting at Barbara’s Over 50 Fair. Each exhibitor felt a personal connection with Barbara and each of us knew that she truly wanted us to be successful. We will certainly participate in ‘Barbara sponsored’ events in the future.”

The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network), a local non-profit, asked people to bring nonperishable food and cash donations to exchange for raffle tickets for valuable prizes. The INN was pleased to raise almost $300 and 88 pounds of food.

GAMER GATE The malpractice of “journalists” on prominent gaming journalism websites such as Kotaku and RockPaperShotgun was first examined under a critical lens when an independent developer named Zoe Quinn was exposed. She had cheated on her boyfriend, now her ex-boyfriend, and he had written a blog about what had transpired, intriguingly titled: “The Zoe Post.”

In this blog, Eron, Zoe’s ex, documented a list of reasons and events leading to the break up, which spurred reaction from the community when it was revealed that she was having intimate relationships with people who wrote articles for gaming news websites, namely, those who wrote positive reviews and articles for Zoe’s game, “Depression Quest,” a text-based adventure game which was not well-received by the community.

As the corruption began to come to light, leading to public outcry, it was quickly censored and oppressed all across the internet. As people became more enraged, due to the fact that their right to freedom of speech was being taken away by anonymous hands, members of the community invested in the industry who felt as though it was wrong to condone corruption, started digging. More tidbits of corruption were unearthed, exposing financial and intimate relationships between writers and their sources, the developers.

However, this was not before journalists responded to the community’s irritation over the lack of ethics among these journalists. These journalists defended Zoe, taking cover behind unrelated societal issues, such as misogyny and hostility towards feminists. Each week, the

journalists became more smug, making more outlandish claims while laying back, believing that everyone was powerless and that there would be no reprimand for the extremely unethical things they had done. These outlandish claims stated things such as, “The gaming industry is dying,” as well as a comparison of gamers to the terrorist organization, ISIS. These protests have gone on for weeks, indicating hope for the cause - and that cause is justice. Professional journalists know that the things they have carried out and the way they have handled public response is extremely wrong. These writers have betrayed our trust; but more importantly, their duty. People must know of the injustice that befalls the fifth estate so that it may be corrected. Awareness is crucial to fighting relentless corruption.

Approximately 1,500 walkers helped raise money at Jones Beach State Park last weekend during Long Island’s Sixth Annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Walk, hosted by the Brain Aneurysm Center of the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Cushing Neuroscience Institute (CNI), along with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF).

The money will benefit North Shore-LIJ’s Brain Aneurysm Center and the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF), supporting essential research that may directly benefit those affected and help to reduce the incidence of ruptured aneurysms.

Brain aneurysm survivors, their families and friends attended the fun-

filled event on September 27th. David Chalif, MD, and Avi Setton, MD, codirectors of the Brain Aneurysm Center, were among the many doctors, nurses and staff members from North Shore-LIJ’s Brain Aneurysm Center in attendance to show their support of the many patients they have treated over the years.

Junior Commissioners Inducted Members of the Islip Town Board swore in 34 high school students as Keep Islip Clean (KIC) Junior Commissioners.

KIC is a not-for-profit affiliate of the nationwide organization Keep America Beautiful, Inc., that is

dedicated to keeping Islip clean, safe, and beautiful.

Junior Commissioners are high school students recommended by their school principals as having demonstrated environmental concern as well as social,

civil and academic responsibility. These junior commissioners play an active role, volunteering their time and efforts, to beautify Islip, making it a clean, safer, and more enjoyable place to live, work and visit.

PRIDE IN COMMUNITY - On September 17th, the Historical Society of Islip Hamlet presented Ray Lembo with its Pride In Community Award. Mr. Lembo was acknowledged for his volunteer efforts to organize and maintain the Town of Islip’s historical collection.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY PROGRAM - On September 17th, the Historical Society of Islip Hamlet hosted J.K. Hodge who presented a program on music from the silent film era and showed a short Buster Keaton silent film. PAYING TRIBUTE - Members of the Town Board and local veterans groups recently were on hand at a ceremonial street renaming ceremony that honors the AMVETS organization. East Islip senior Nicole Levy, a two-sport star in both lacrosse and field hockey, has been ranked as the No. 4 recruit in the nation by Inside Lacrosse magazine, for athletes in the Class of 2015.

“I was pretty excited when I found out,” Levy said. “It was one of the first times that I’ve been recognized nationwide.”

A two-year lacrosse captain and four-time AllCounty player, she was also named to the 2014 Under Armour Underclass AllAmericans, the US Lacrosse Schoolgirls’ Division Team and Newsday’s Top 100 Players and Players to Watch lists. The attacker’s 229 career goals and 154 assists are a formidable

legacy, the result of an early immersion in the sport, thanks to her father Steven Levy, East Islip’s boys lacrosse coach.

“It came naturally,” she said of her early start in lacrosse. “My dad threw me in camp at age 4.

I played with the guys every summer, every July weekend. It was fun.”

Her athletic skills are not limited to lacrosse, however, as she has shined just as brightly as a field hockey player. In her fall sport, she likewise was named team captain, an All-County athlete as well as to Newsday’s 2014 AllLong Island First Team and Player to Watch list, and led Long Island in points scored through the regular season. Her 19 goals in one season were the most in East Islip history. She also holds school field hockey records for most career points and assists, most points and assists in a season and most points and assists in a game.

“She is definitely a special athlete,” said Christopher Veit, her field

hockey coach of the last four years.

Serving as a captain in two different sports speaks volumes about her leadership skills on the field, an attribute that also comes into play in her extracurricular activities with East Islip’s Girls Leaders Club and Best Buddies program. “I like to think of myself as a role model,” she said.

She attributes her athletic success to hard work, practice and staying focused, as well as a deep competitive streak.

“I’m the type of person that runs a mile in gym,” she admitted. “Everything is competitive for me.”

Levy has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Syracuse University and looks forward to signing a letter of intent. She plans on studying communications in college – while pursuing the athletic record books, of course.

Visitors can explore nature trails that lead to places such as “Bambiland,” “The Nursery” and “Old McDonald’s Farmyard.”

Nine members of East Islip’s 2014 varsity softball team were recently named All-America Scholar Athletes by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, a prestigious honor which required each student to earn a combined three-semester average of 90 or higher.

Recognized as NFCA AllAmerica Scholar Athletes were current freshmen Alise Colandro and Cierra Colon; sophomores Jackie

Carty, Courtney Greene and Megan Palmer; junior Heather Zenk; seniors Alexa Martone and Megan Munn; and 2014 graduate Danielle Drywa.

As a team, East Islip softball placed seventh on the list of NFCA Top 10 All-Academic Teams with a score of 3.79, the highest among all Long Island teams in their division.

“I am very proud of my girls and their accomplishment,” said

“They not only put the work in on the field, but they get it done in the classroom, and that is wonderful to see. What makes it more impressive is that most of these athletes played more than one sport, and they were still able to maintain these high grades. Local Teen Wins Honor Action For Nature today announced the winners of its 2014 International Young Eco-Hero Awards competition, inspirational young people from around the globe who have stepped forward to create a better future for our planet by taking actions to address tough environmental problems.

Christian Muller, age 13, received an Honorable Mention Award for his efforts to organize community environmental activities.

Since he was very young, Christian has been an environmentalist.

The USA’s Gulf Coast oil spill was his catalyst. He learned how the spill was affecting marine life and waterways far beyond the Gulf. It was truly a widespread disaster, and he decided then that he could make a difference by taking care of our environmental resources today and on an ongoing basis.

After collaborations

with existing local organizations, he formed a local 4-H club. To recruit members, he rode his scooter around the neighborhood handing out flyers, and sent out e-mails.

He was frustrated because so many of the teenagers he contacted wanted to be indoors playing video games.

However, he persevered and now has a group of approximately twenty-five members from seven to eight local schools who meet one to two times a month to do clean-ups and participate in local group projects.

The group is dedicated to local marine and wetland environmental work and is one of the largest 4-H groups on Long Island.

They pick up such things as cigarette butts, fast food trash, and even discarded bottles of hair spray that had been dumped.

“It’s better to get outside in nature and do something rather than sit around

inside talking about it,” says Christian. He is an inspiration to others, and a shining example of the fact that even the very young can find ways to help the environment.

“Our mission at Action For Nature is to support young environmental leaders who are making a difference in the world through their leadership qualities and commitment to the environment,” said Beryl Kay, president of Action For Nature. “The work Christian has done to organize community environmental activities is exemplary, and we are pleased to include him among our International Young Eco-Hero winners.”
