Legislator Esteban Honors Brentwood Chamber Of Commerce At 60th Anniversary Gala
The Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, a nonprofit organization serving the residents of Brentwood, held its 60 Year Anniversary Gala. Suffolk County Legislator Manuel Esteban Sr, Esq., along with many of his colleagues, attended this wonderful event.
“The Brentwood Chamber of Commerce and its members are truly an inspiration and deserve to be recognized for their service to the community,”
said Esteban. “Local businesses Grant Funeral Homes, the Brentwood Public Library, Roslyn Savings Bank, and the Brentwood Pharmacy lead this diverse Brentwood Community by example, and we thank them for their dedication and hard work.”
Esteban also highlighted some of Brentwood’s future leaders including Raquel Acosta, Jennifer Alvarado Garcia, and David Ramirez.
“As the first HispanicRepublican to be elected to represent the 16th Legislative District, I could not be prouder to see the wonderful strides that this community and its young leaders are making,” said Esteban. “The Brentwood community and Suffolk County are lucky to have these young inspiring individuals, and I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for them.”
Art League Of Long Island To Host Event In Celebration Of Latinx Heritage Month
In celebration of Latinx Heritage Month, the Art League of Long Island and Colored Colors present a day of fun family-friendly activities on Saturday, October 15, from 12pm to 6pm at the Art League of Long Island’s art center in Dix Hills. The event, sponsored by Suffolk County Legislators Manuel Esteban and Steven J. Flotteron, is open to the public and admission is free.
Children will enjoy an art activity called Amate, a form of traditional Mexican folk art. Amate evolved from the ancient form of paper produced from the bark of fig trees to its current form in the 21st century. Children will create colorful paintings on the amate paper led by professional artist/ art educator Robin Rosen O’Leary from 1:30-2:30pm. Adults and children alike can learn salsa dancing at 2:30pm, led by dance instructor Dominic Sparano.
Enjoy artwork in the Strolling Gallery by self-taught artist and Brentwood HS alum Diego Garcia. Garcia’s style includes vivid use of color, fragments of lyrics and poems, graffiti and abstract expressionist techniques. Since 2015, the now 29-yearold painter has had six successful gallery solo exhibitions alongside many group and highlighted artist showcases from Long Island to Chelsea, NY.
A panel discussion led by Jose Tutiven, Founder of Colored Colors, will begin at 4:00pm. The panel includes Diego Garcia, Legislator Esteban, Angelica Melo (visual designer, illustrator, author and principal of Marvelous Whale), and Adriana Devers (author, educator, speaker, and founder of Cuentos de Triadas).
Visitors can purchase original art and yummy treats at the pop-up artisan and food market.
Colored Colors has grown exponentially since its founding four years ago, filling an overwhelming need for community driven events that provide minorities and millennials living on Long Island the opportunity to showcase their music and their art. Learn more about Colored Colors at www.coloredcolors.com .

Douglas Elliman Long Island Makes A Large Impact

LUCY
9 years young female. Sweet girl who is very playful and outgoing.
The Long Island division of Douglas Elliman Realty, one of the largest residential brokerage companies in the nation, has partnered with The American Cancer Society to help in the fight against breast cancer.
As part of the organization’s annual, year-long initiative Real Men Wear Pink, agents from Elliman branch offices across Long Island have volunteered as Campaign Ambassadors to raise awareness and money in the fight to end breast cancer. Since its inception in 2013, Real Men Wear Pink has raised more than $40 million.
The brokerage’s involvement began in 2021, when Carlos Salinas, an agent in the Smithtown office, became the first Douglas Elliman Real Men Wear Pink Campaign Ambassador. Salinas found great joy in helping to make a difference and shared his experience with Ann Conroy, CEO of Douglas Elliman’s Long Island division. Inspired by Salinas, Conroy encouraged each Long Island branch office to establish a Campaign Ambassador for 2022. With more and more agents signing on, the Elliman team has raised more than $131,000 toward its $200,000 goal—and with plenty of fundraising
events yet to happen before year’s end.
“When I came to Douglas Elliman last year, my goal was to be one of the very best agents in the company while also giving back philanthropically,” said Salinas. “What better cause is there than to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. The support of both Ann Conroy and Katy Cardinale, Branch Manager of Douglas Elliman’s Smithtown office, has been monumental in my efforts of raising awareness through Real Men Wear Pink and The American Cancer Society.”
Salinas, who has raised almost $10,000 to date, is set to participate in a large fundraising and networking event on Tuesday, October 18th at Prato 850 in Commack, with all revenue benefiting the Real Men Wear Pink Campaign.
Michael Furino, another philanthropic agent with Douglas Elliman’s Franklin Square office, has dedicated himself to serving as a Campaign Ambassador.
“I started my own charity about 10 years ago, through which I have raised over $1,000,000,” said Furino.
“When I was presented with the opportunity to become involved with Real Men Wear Pink, I was immediately excited,
since I was confident in my ability to organize great events and raise significant funds. It’s been a great experience for me to be a Campaign Ambassador for many reasons, including getting to know other agents in my office on a deeper level—some of them have even had personal experiences battling breast cancer.”
Furino, who has raised almost $20,000 to date, will host a Vegas Night fundraiser on Thursday, October 20, at Chateau Briand in Carle Place.
Douglas Elliman Realty has long been deeply committed to giving back to the local communities it serves and supporting important causes nationwide through its philanthropic initiative, Elliman Cares.

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services
Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.
The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.
Every summer, HKS hosts Camp Helen Keller, a program for children who are blind, have low vision are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss. The camp seeks to improve participants’ self-esteem, selfconfidence and socialization skills. It’s held at the LIU Post campus in Brookville and admits campers from Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, who attend free of charge and receive door-to-door transportation, also free of charge.
“Everyone here is the same,” says Ellie Gallagher, a 10-year-old camper from Freeport, NY. “Here we all have some kind of visual disability, so no one feels different. And it’s a lot of fun.” Campers participate in traditional activities, such as swimming, arts and crafts, music and dance classes, as well as field trips and technology
Every year, the camp organizes a show on the last day of the one-month program to celebrate the campers’ achievements, show parents and friends what campers have been doing and to say goodbye to old and new friends. This year, show-stopping performances included dance routines to favorite songs including “Rainbow Connection” “The Theme From Cheers” and singing performances by select campers.
“It’s such a confidence boost for her,” says Ellie’s mom, Jennifer. “She looks forward to seeing the same friends every year. The activities she experiences lets her know she’s just like every other kid and can do just about anything.”
Additionally, October is month that celebrates the blind community in a variety of ways, including World Sight Day on October 14, White Cane Day on October 15 and the entire month designated as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices. It’s important to accept people of all abilities, from all walks of life, and this nonprofit does just that.

American Cancer Society Announces The 29th Year Of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer On Long Island A Celebration Of Courage And Supportive Communities Returns In Person In 2022
Islip High School Students Achieve High Music Honors
Nine superb studentmusicians from Islip High School were recently selected to perform in honors music ensembles across New York State.
Madelynn Lange was chosen as a member of the New York State School Music Association’s AllState Mixed Chorus, while Lucas Bohr and Skylar Greene were chosen as alternates for the All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble and Mixed Chorus, respectively.
This year’s All-State ensembles are scheduled to perform on Dec. 3 and 4 at the Eastman Theater in Rochester.
In addition, Ella Beiser, Lucas Bohr, Madelynn Lang, Lianna Rivera and Ma’Raya Stewart were chosen for the SCMEA All-County Vocal Jazz
Ensemble. They will perform on Nov. 5 at East Islip High School.
Ella Beiser, Maggie Frazer, Skylar Greene, Madelynn Lang, Daniel Rubinson, Ma’Raya Stewart and Daniel Turk were also chosen for the NYSCAME All-County Mixed Chorus. They will perform at Half Hollow Hills High School East on Nov. 18. Student-musicians in the All-State Festival are selected based on their performance in the NYSSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival, while All-County participants went through an audition and recommendation process last spring. These students were selected to participate from thousands of applicants throughout Suffolk County and across
New York State.
Students prepare for the festivals with the assistance of their school music teachers and then participate in a series of rehearsals that conclude with a public concert. The students will have the opportunity to work and perform under the leadership of highly skilled guest conductors from higher education and the professional music communities alongside other high school students of equally high caliber.
“This is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the hard work of our students and teachers in Islip,” Director of Fine and Performing Arts Michael Hershkowitz said.
The American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer movement, will unite residents across Long Island on October 16th, at Jones Beach State Park, Field 5.
In its 29th year, the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer movement embraces a bittersweet mix of purpose – celebrating survivorship and paying meaningful tributes to loved ones lost, while raising awareness and funds for a world without breast cancer. “Thanks in large part to the decades of work and the dollars raised, a breast cancer diagnosis does not come without hope, and the breast cancer journey is not one that has to be traveled alone,” says Brittany Lawton, Associate Director, Development.
This year, female breast cancer has surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, with more than 287,000 women
diagnosed. Men are also impacted by breast cancer, with an estimated 2,710 men expected to receive a diagnosis in 2022.
Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society fund innovative breast cancer research; provide education and guidance to help people reduce their risk; and offer comprehensive patient support to those who need it most.

East Islip’s Young Musicians Perform At FTK Carnival Opening Ceremony
In a lovely opening ceremony, East Islip’s young musicians kicked off the annual FTK Carnival on Sept. 23. A proud chorus sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” while string
musicians performed “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” under the direction of music teachers Jaime DeMaria and Angela Stewart.

Christian Seifert Appointed As East Islip’s World Languages Coordinator
Christian Seifert has been appointed as the East Islip School District’s world languages coordinator. He also remains an assistant principal at East Islip Middle School. Seifert replaces Dr. Robert J. Wottawa II in this position; Wottawa remains East Islip’s director of art and music.
Seifert has served as an assistant principal for East Islip for the past 14 years, both at the middle school and at East Islip High School. Prior to coming to East Islip, he worked as a New York City high school assistant principal and a New York City middle school teacher. In 2013, Seifert was honored as an Administrator of the Year
CHRISTIAN SEIFERT
by the Western Suffolk Counselors’ Association.
A Melville resident, Seifert earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in government and politics from St. John’s University, his school
building administration certification from Queens College and his school district administration certification from St. Joseph’s College.
“The study of world languages deepens your connections to people around the globe and expands your perspective,” Seifert said. “Opportunities in all facets of life and business present themselves daily that otherwise never would when you are able to speak another language. You become another person when you achieve fluency. In addition, more than being able to speak another language you are able to think in other ways.”

Fall boating season has arrived, and with it come different types of risks that cold water and air temperatures bring. Here are three boating safety tips from the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water just right for leaf peeping

season.
A float plan is needed: A float plan is as simple as telling a responsible person where you will be going and when you’ll be back. With fewer other boats on the water (potential Good samaritans) after Labor Day, a float plan ensures rescuers
will be notified if you ever fail to check back in after your outing. Additionally, leaving a note under your vehicle’s windshield wiper at the launch ramp can help trigger an alarm.

boat doesn’t have a built in-ladder, a compact emergency ladder or even a looped line attached to a cleat, pre-rigged with foothold loops every few inches and hung over the transom, can substitute.
For life jackets, camo styling hides a danger: Dark green, tan and black camo patterns are remarkable at doing exactly as designed, blending you into your surroundings. However, that’s not a benefit if you happen to be floating in the water and rescuers are searching. If possible, make their job easier and
wear a life jacket with high visibility. For smaller vessels and paddlers, leaf peeping season is also a really good time to secure the life jacket to your body – that includes using buckle snaps.
