Beginning January 1st, 2017 in New York State, the sale of smokedetecting devices powered by removable, replaceable batteries will be prohibited.

Instead, retailers will be able to sell only smokedetecting devices with a power source that isn’t removable and lasts at least a decade. Increased availability of extended-life batteries and new tamperresistant smoke detectors is expected to help individuals and families better protect themselves and their loved ones.

Existing devices already in homes will be allowed to remain there until they stop functioning, and smoke detectors with replaceable batteries will continue to be on sale in the state throughout 2016.

In honor of Submariners who gave their lives for their country , the United States Submarine Veterans Inc. (USSVI) celebrates Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Week.

November 7th through 13th, Note: The (SS) is a military specialty designator, signifying a sailor is “Qualified in Submarines” Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Week is celebrated annually during the week that includes Veterans Day, and provides a special period where Submarine Veterans from USSVI Bases (chapters) bring comfort and joy to sick children.

The USSVI has over 13,000 members in 164 Bases in the US. Year round, US Submarine Veterans visit children in Children’s Hospitals, Cancer Hospitals, Hospices, Child

and businesses must have working smoke detectors.

The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is clanging the alarm with the message, “Don’t wait – check the date!” - the 2016 theme of the annual Fire Prevention Week, October 9th through 15th promoting the importance of replacing smoke alarms every 10 years.

“Functioning smoke alarms reduce by half the risk of dying in a home fire, so it is extremely important to make sure they’re working properly”, said FASNY President Kenneth Pienkowski.

President Pienkowski noted that families utilizing a 10-year-life smoke alarm in the home can remove a potentially high-danger component of human error from the reliability of alarms.

Star Island Yacht Club & Marina has rescheduled its 7th annual Striped Bass Tournament in anticipation of Hurricane Matthew, which yesterday made landfall in Haiti as a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 145 miles per hour. Determined to be the most powerful storm in the Atlantic since 2007, Matthew’s potential impact on the United States is still being evaluated.

In an effort to protect its anglers from any potential dangers at sea, Star Island Yacht Club & Marina has rescheduled the Seventh Annual Striped Bass Tournament. The Captain’s Meeting will now be held on Friday, October 14th and fishing will take place on Saturday, October 15th.

Museum to Be Built Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently joined Senator Tom Croci and other elected officials at a press conference where Senator Croci announced plans to construct a Navy SEAL Museum and United States Naval Sea Cadet Training Facility. The Museum will be named after Suffolk County’s iconic national war hero, LT. Michael P. Murphy.

Also during the press conference, Senator Croci announced a $400,000.00 State grant he secured for Suffolk County that has been earmarked specifically for the Museum.

Funding for the construction, maintenance and operation of the Museum will be the responsibility of the LT. Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum Foundation.

Senator Tom Croci said, “I am so very proud that this community will be the home of the first Navy Seal Museum in the northeast, paying tribute to a local hero and a true patriot, LT. Michael Murphy, as well the Naval Special Warfare Community and its significant role in our nation’s security.”

“We are grateful to Senator Croci for securing the grant that will make this museum possible”, commented Islip Town

Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “This museum will be a treasure in our Town, and will remind visitors of the sacrifices that have been made by the members of the Special Forces community. While we can never repay them, we can honor the heroism and legacy of Lt. Michael Murphy, and all those who serve our nation.”

The museum will honor the ongoing mission and legacy of the U.S. Navy SEALs. An additional focus will be to continue the commitment to support the Sea Cadets program by utilizing a portion of the museum as a training facility. This museum will be the first of its kind in the entire northeast and only the third such museum in the country.

“The Murphy family is thrilled with the first ever Navy SEAL Museum in the Northeast named after our son, Michael”, said Dan Murphy, Father of LT Michael Murphy.

This project, the LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum/Sea Cadet Training Facility is a reality because of the hard work and commitment of State Senator Tom Croci, County Executive Steve Bellone and County Legislator, Bill Lindsay Jr. State Senator Tom Croci, a Navy Commander who worked

closely with the SEAL teams in Afghanistan, looked on this project as a labor of love and is supporting this project in both name and monetary support. This Museum/ Sea Cadet Training facility will be a reality because of Senator Croci’s hard work, support and commitment to our men and women in the armed forces.”

“Our hometown hero, Lt. Michael Murphy, made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting our country and our freedom,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “His legacy continues to embody the American spirit, and I am extremely proud that his memory will live on through generations of Suffolk County residents through this Navy SEAL museum. This is not only a proud day for Lt. Murphy’s family and friends but for all of us in Suffolk County as we commemorate the accomplishments of this great American hero.”

The artist renderings and architectural elevations presented at the press conference show the 200’ by 185’ glassed walled building will be located at the north east side of the park, which also is the home of the Long Island Maritime Museum.

Event founder Buddy Fuoco and the firm’s founding partner, Vitro Rizzi, were close friends for several years. After Rizzi’s passing, his colleagues and surviving firm partners, Robert Schwarz, Janice Taraskas and Helen Butera, have continued his legacy of providing a steadfast commitment to community and volunteerism.

The Fuoco family’s longstanding connection with Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck

began with event cochairman Steve Fuoco’s sister, Beth Ann FuocoSantos, who attended the camp between the ages of 3 and 21. The Fuoco family established the Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival in 1969 to raise funds for the camp, to ensure that people like Beth Ann are provided the opportunity to have memorable and educational summer experiences.

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages six to 21 with special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity and independence in a safe and supportive educational environment. Throughout the program, campers participate in activities such as arts and crafts, music, cook-outs, swimming, and boating.

The Fuoco family, alongside The Rotary Club of Patchogue, hosted the 47th annual Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival at Bellport Country Club on Thursday, September 15th. Funds raised from the tournament and dinner will benefit Camp Pa-QuaTuck, a year-long respite for children and young adults with physical and mental disabilities. More than $1.4 million has been raised by the Golf Feastival to support the camp since its inaugural event in 1969.

This year’s Feastival featured 152 golfers at the golf tournament, many of whom golfed together in teams. The consequent cocktail hour, buffet-style Italian dinner, tournament awards, raffle and silent auction was attended by 180 guests.

Participants in the daylong golf outing partook in a variety of “Food Feastivals,” for which the event is named. Italian “Feastival Stands” lined the course with options such as meatballs and clams, pasta and wine, sausage

The Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum Committee announced today that due to financial constraints the Lighthouse Tower and Keepers dwelling will not be lit this year during the holiday season. This of course does not mean the mariners beacon atop the Lighthouse tower which has warned sailors since 1797.

Dick White, Chair of the Committee, stated, “When we took over the Lighthouse in 1986, we committed ourselves to the care and maintenance of the now 220 year-old Long Island icon. We have significant ongoing and future costs ahead of us in repair and maintenance of not only the Lighthouse Tower and Museum, but

the revetment holding up the bluff on which our beautiful beacon stands.

The Montauk Lighthouse is a self-funding notfor-profit entity, relying solely on our wonderful patrons to support our site, tours and operations.

The annual cost of just lighting the Lighthouse for the holiday season is about $50,000. Our first responsibility is to the care and upkeep of “The Light.”

Signs. They’re everywhere.

You need only to look, and take notice. A visit from a butterfly to commemorate a birthday… the timely appearance of a nest of robin’s eggs… a rainbow arching over the sky…

There are those who simply appreciate these occurrences as a token of nature at its finest and leave it at that. And then there are those who see it as representative of something far deeper, and more spiritual in nature.

Sure, anything can be made to “fit,” if you are so inclined; but there are certain phenomena, if you will, that simply cannot be denied and leave you shaking your head in wonderment.

Case in point: I recently found myself driving on Sunrise Highway, as I often

do, when I happened to focus in on the license plate of the vehicle in front of me. It read “RIP PAL.” For those who may not know, I recently lost my grandfather – my “Pal” – as I fondly called him, earlier this year. The odds of that particular combination of letters, traveling in front of me at that particular time, leading up to what would have been his 90th birthday this month… it was pretty mind blowing at the time.

As soon as I was stationary, I quickly texted my mom to tell her about my encounter, still incredulous at the coincidence. No sooner did I get out of the car to head in to pick up dinner, when I was met with another “sign.”

As I stood on line waiting to be helped, my eyes fell on the nametag of the girl behind the counter, one I had noticed there countless times

before. It read “Ventura” … my grandfather’s last name.

Whether it was her first name, last name, I wasn’t certain.

But it didn’t matter. What are the odds?

Maybe it was just a coincidence. Two, in fact.

Within the space of about five minutes. Both having to do with my grandpa. Perhaps just a stroke of luck. But, to me, it was a sign. Of what, exactly, I don’t know. But these subtle reminders of those who have passed on are around us always, if we only choose to pay attention to them. And I do, always.

They say signs come to those who believe in them, those who are open to accept them for what they are – whether it provides a moment of comfort or brings to mind a happy memory. We can certainly all use more of those. Anxiously awaiting the next one...

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent.

Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease.

Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease.

That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

She began her teaching career in 1991 with the New York City Department of Education, and was

named an assistant principal at Brooklyn’s P.S. 202 in 1998. After moving to Long Island with her family in 2003, O’Rourke served as an administrator at Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields School District before taking over at JFK in 2005.

“It was a privilege to serve as principal at JFK for so many years,” said O’Rourke. “My time there was truly rewarding and I was lucky to have worked with an amazing group of students, staff and parents.

My new position presents a wonderful opportunity to continue to advocate for and support the children of East Islip in a diverse capacity. I eagerly look forward to working with our dedicated team of educators to continue to make East Islip great.”

Night of Networking Islip High School students in Renee Clock’s business ownership and marketing course recently spent an evening attending a small business expo and networking event hosted

by Sen. Phil Boyle.

The students had the opportunity to meet with representatives from 20

chambers of commerce and several government agencies and organizations that provide services and resources to small business owners.

The young entrepreneurs were able to ask questions and gather information and business cards from various small businesses that were also in

attendance, as well as meet with prospective mentors in the career clusters they are interested in.

“My students enjoyed the experience of learning how to network, and about business ownership and different career opportunities that exist,” said Clock.

Islip has a familiar face in its new principal of Sherwood Elementary School with the return of Chad Walerstein. The educator was with the district earlier in his career as an assistant principal at Islip Middle School.

Prior to taking the position at Sherwood, replacing Maureen Martin, Walerstein served as an assistant principal at

Eastport-South Manor Junior-Senior High School.

He began his career as an ELA teacher and literacy coach in the William Floyd School District.

Walerstein, a Setauket resident, earned his bachelor’s degree in English and master’s degree in elementary education at Long Island University’s Southampton College. His post-graduate

FIRST RESPONDERS HONORED - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently attended the 2016 Suffolk Regional Emergency Medical Service Council Awards ceremony. Multiple departments and ambulance services that operate within Islip Town received awards. The highlight was the 2016 Agency of the Year Award, which was presented to the Bay Shore-Brightwaters Rescue Ambulance Company.
